I loved these giant bricks so much at that age! Superfun for basic stacking as well as advance building.

Should probably wait a bit on this one, but Cootie is the best game ever for the preK & K crowd. Another classic game is Memory.

Have some construction paper, brown paper bags (I cut the bottoms off, then down one seam and use the backside as kraft paper), markers, and crayons. Even the 2 year old can rip paper up and stick it to contact paper to make fun collages! Bonus, no need for scissors!

And please don't forget books! Board might be best for the little girl, but if she's not an eater/tearer, then go ahead and get paper or hard backs. Rikki Tikki Tembo, a Seuss collection, Where's Spot, some Eric Carle, Carl, Richard Scarry, Jamberry, and some Little Golden Books ought to be a good start! Protip: Thrift shops have tons of books for kids in great condition.

The tube of watercolors works like this. Remember those little watercolor sets back in elementary school where the paint was in the plastic try, in little dried circles? Like this That is pretty much the same thing as what is in the tube but just dried out.

"B-b-b-but doesn't that mean that the paint is ruined?!"

Not at all! Watercolor can always be re-activated by just adding water to it again. That's the beauty of it. Put paint in a spot you don't like? Just put water on it again and brush it off. (note: It wont come of perfectly because of the fiber of the paper, but it actually is pretty forgiving). You can always pick up a watercolor tray like this and squeeze the paint out of the tubes and into the compartments of the tray. The paint can be mixed together while still in its wet form (at least I believe it can) and put in its own separate compartments. When it dries in the compartments just hit it with a wet brush to keep using it, just like you did with those little crayola sets. You won't be able to completely re-activate the whole blob, but you don't need to.

Watercolor pencils can be used like regular color pencils, but much like the dried out watercolors in the plastic tray, you can go into the drawing with a wet brush and activate the pencils like regular watercolors. This is useful for mixing wet and dry techniques.

Acrylics are mean as shit! They dry hella fast (especially on paper) and are always like, "Oh, you wanted to mix that? Why don't you mix my balls with your mouth! Go fuck yourself!" At least, that's my relationship with them. It is important to use a medium like matte medium and possibly some retarder (helps them dry slower) to make them more manageable. They tend to work best in opaque layers, as their washes aren't too malleable and the plasticity of the paint tends to not make the nicest glazes. Here is an acrylic piece on paper I finished about 15 minutes ago for RGD, and like always, it took way longer than it should have.

I don't know where you live, but it's really hot here, and my nephews and neice are out of school right now too. this is what we've been using for sanity. Ages here are 11, 14, and 10, though. But, they seem to get pooped out pretty quick. Fallow up with a movie and popcorn!

Also, drawing. I think every kid likes to color. these are quite awesome. No mess, don't have to worry about them drawing on walls ect.

If all else fails, zoo's are REALLY fun! Baking together with grandma was also my favorite as a kid. If you do any baking that'd be an idea for you. Peanut butter cookies are pretty quick and easy.

Is anyone willing to share their kids' absolute favorite toys/games/crafting supplies? (We have two girls ages 4 & 7.) I'm trying to be a lot more selective to avoid the toymaggedon that invariably happens every year when we end up with a lot of crap they don't care about or play with. And I refuse to get on the LOL doll/Pikmi Pops bandwagon because they are fun for the 3 minutes they spend opening them and then zero interest afterwards.

I'll share a few of our favorites in case anyone else is in the same boat:

7 y.o. loves: Uno (card game), Math Slam game,

4 y.o. loves: Melissa & Doug housekeeping set, M&D play kitchen

Both girls are obsessed with drawing/coloring with oil pastels

Family games we all love playing together: HeadBanz, Zingo, Monopoly Junior,

u/littlebugs · 3 pointsr/Mommit

From cheapest to most expensive...

Art supplies are always appreciated because they're used up so quickly. They're a great default if you don't know what to get.

My favorite children's CD by Rachel Buchman.

Dapper Snappers are really nifty little things that most people don't know about.

Head to the bookstore and get the staff to recommend some fantastic children's books.

Get a family membership to the local zoo, aquarium, children's museum, nature center, etc. (although check first - many places let children 2 and under in for free, so a couple's membership might be a better value).

u/justarandomcommenter · 3 pointsr/raisedbyborderlines

Just remind yourself that being angry is a totally valid and perfectly healthy way of handling something that upsets you - the line is drawn at acting on the anger.

For example: Don't get angry and daydream about killing your mom, then snap at your kids for being kids, or kick your dog, or tear your husband's head off for not putting the dishes away. But if you "embrace the angry" you're feeling, and enjoy "treating yourself" to some fantasy about her empty funeral and pigs disposing of her body - then laugh and play and enjoy your life like she never did, and hug your kids, and passionately embrace your husband/wife - that's perfectly healthy and acceptable, because you're not harming anyone by doing it.

You don't have to be perfectly in control of everything at every minute. You need to be aware of your surroundings, and not harm anyone if you choose to do something to handle your emotions in a certain way. For another example, I used to love oil pastels. I would beg mom constantly to buy them for me, she'd always lecture me about how ungrateful I was, and if I posted the issue then I'd end up beaten whenever I got home. That's a prime example of not handling your emotions properly, but more than that, it never taught me what to do when I'm upset about something because all I know is "don't be like her", so like you I'd try bottling it up and just not being angry. I exploded on someone one day because it was just too much and I still didn't have any "tools" to deal with anger, because as far as I was concerned it was a bad emotion and I needed to try harder to be a good person and just never feel it, ever. So last week, I explained to my therapist what's going on and what happened when I blew up last year and we were talking about how to handle it (I love this new therapist!), but he asked why I'd never bought myself a box of oil pastels. I didn't have an answer of course because it was essentially due to believing I didn't deserve them, which is totally bullshit, but I've been dealing with much bigger issues and the oil pastel thing was buried deep (I only had told the therapist by accident even).

So instead of snapping at people and trying to avoid being angry (which just isn't possible BTW, don't be hard on yourself for feeling angry) - but instead of dealing with any of that, I bought a box of Crayola oil pastels off Amazon, and a couple of first drawing pads (if you or anyone else reading this is an artist of any kind, do not look at those links in the context of "art supplies"). I got them yesterday (cause I've got no memory and forgot to order them for a week), and ripped them out of the box - which is also a phenomenal release (if you don't often o order from Amazon you'll see what I mean, it's like the Christmas you never had, sitting right at your front door!)... But the first thing I did was break the end off of the brown one because I scrawled out "Fuck You Mom!!!" in huge letters that took up the whole page.

It's not about being perfect, or acting your agree, or "keeping up appearances". Being angry is part of being human, and suppressing or avoiding that anger won't end well for anyone around you (trust me on that one, I still feel bad about my blow up and it was nearly 18mos ago! Thankfully everyone around me now is very good at forgiving and being kind and understanding, but I still feel guilty about having snapped in the first place).

Good luck, and please remember to be kind to yourself, be understanding and empathetic - to you as well as others. I'd like to offer huge, warm, sincere hugs if you'd like some.

Sorry again for babbling, I'm apparently incapable of not being verbose :)

I hope you get to do something unplanned and unexpected this weekend, that you want to do for once, and you surprise yourself with how much you enjoy it! (I "sucked up" my fatigue and pain from my MS a couple of weeks ago and went to the "dinosaur museum" with the kids and husband, it was so much fun - even though I spent thirty mins scrubbing their hands/arms/faces with Wet Ones cause I'm also paranoid everyone's walking Petri dishes...

Cheers :)

  • The cheapest item I have isn't going to qualify :( It's $1.92! It used to be $1.18 though...darn amazon prices. It's on my wishlist because I love coloring, and Crayola is vastly superior to Roseart :)
  • I'd like a gift card if I win the $20 item--I'm saving up for this beautiful, incredibly expensive Kindle! I love reading, and the thought of taking TONS of books with me EVERYWHERE I GO just is amazing to me! I want the superdy-duper fancy one, because I might as well go all-out if I'm going to be saving up! It's going to take a long time to get enough for the Kindle, but it's worth it to me :) I've never had a fancy tech gadget before, and I can't imagine a better one than a giant fancy book to pop my techno-cherry :)

My favorite birthday memory is from two years ago. My future boyfriend (we weren't "officially" dating... You know dudes) threw me a surprise birthday dinner at my favorite pizza place. I thought it was going to be just the two of us, but when we got to the restaurant my friends were there to celebrate. It was very sweet of him.

Happy Birthday! Here are some markers I need for my classroom!

u/MydoglookslikeanEwok · 3 pointsr/christmas

If you can find an advent calendar with pockets which are about one inch wide and tall, these tiny eraser toys were a hit last year with my kids (the links take you to amazon.com)

tiny animals

tiny food

And here is an amazon link to advent calendars with pockets

I have used the same cloth advent calendar with velcro figures for at least ten years or more with my kids, and over the years I have put Legos in the pockets and various chocolates, but I think they liked the little erasers the best. They are EXCELLENT quality. You can take them apart and put them back together. If you search on "tiny toys" on amazon, you will probably find other ideas as well.

For the first Mother's Day, I hand-made a picture with my 7 month old daughter's help.

Materials Needed: A few sheets of different colored size A3 paper. Crayola Washable Kid's Paint, a small paint brush, scissors, and some crayons. A picture frame is optional(Ikea Frame).

Directions: There are 2 steps in creating it. Step one is doing the whole left side by yourself and making sure it is dry in time. Then on Mother's Day present the unfinished artwork to the mother. Step 2 involves working with the mother to create the whole right side. Biggest hand goes first, and then smaller and smaller. Add some extra flair to it and win Father of the Year!

I hope this art inspires you Dads to make something great for Mother's Day.

u/SaraSmile416 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

When I was about 6, I loved to draw but I was always bummed to use the "kid supplies" to draw with like crayons and markers. My mom went out and got me "real" art supplies because she said I was a "real artist" and needed the "big people" supplies. It meant the world to me, not only because the stuff she bought me was good but that she also believed in me... so, I would recommend for Adela:

I have this and a great multitude of coloured pencils (I'm not good with markers). I also have some excellent colouring books (mostly dinosaurs).

This is the best party ever.

u/piratesgoyarr · 6 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

And that's definitely not chocolate

If I win this coloring book and pencils would be awesome if I win! Thanks for the contest.

Before anyone freaks out, I'm an Air Force vet, and this is meant only as banter. His daughter probably would have roasted me too.

u/quick_quip_whip · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Anything colorful will work, and plushies tend to last a while this Alice and Wonderland set is a good example of long lasting plushies that will take some wear and tear.

Artwork for her room in bright colors would also be really cool.

Crayons, paints, art supplies. Crayola makes a lot of colorful art supplies for kids, like these washable paints. Then just get some giant paper to go with it and you've got some entertaining supplies!

u/Legasia · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Alright, so if I understood right than here we go!

$0-5: Panda Decal because everyone loves pandas!

$5-10: Colored pencils, for grown-ups who love to color (or those with kids)!

$10-20: Puppy chow

$20-50: Bad-Ass Grill

Sidewalk chalk for my girl

Fantastic summer item for my daughter
It will keep her fabously entertained
She can draw furry animals with it
Fast sidewalk drawings made by Ellie
They may be frail if left outside when a fierce storm hits
Family fun all packed into a case
Father ( and mother) approved!

u/diversionmary · 1 pointr/doodles

Haha, thanks! My daughter was scribbling in a page then I'd interpret the scribbles into a drawing.

She can actually draw things that look like things but I think some of these scribbles were from when she was younger and I just found them. From there, I'd have her fill this or that area with scribbles.

I used her Crayola twistable color pencils and they were surprisingly vibrant and smooth to color with. Less

u/Seret · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Great suggestion!

I have a question for you. What is preferable: More paint sets with less color variety or less paint sets with more color variety? Because I can probably buy a lot more packs of paint sets if they come in less than 24 colors. Here is an example, what do you think?

Also, among the three supplies you listed, is there one that is needed more than another or does it not matter?

The link you posted is the most cost-effective pack of construction paper I could find on Amazon, so that's good.

These are cheaper packs of large crayons, so I can get a bunch of those if everyone thinks this is the best idea.

u/SereneWisdom · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

These Crayola Oil Pastel Sticks for me and the boys to be more artsy. It's summertime which means the boys have lots of free time and drawing is something they like. And I like to doodle as well from time to time.

Thank you for this contest.

u/frecklesandmimosas · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Cleaned it up all nice! I got rid of a notebook that I didn't need because I already had one- I just needed another color!

I separated my kids toys from mine. =]

Tagging /u/quitelike !

I would love [this] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004UBH2/?coliid=I1M4E7MG13JS3R&colid=1EITSLPJPBRC5&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it) because I just got kid paintbrushes from /u/quitelike and now I need paints!

u/NotSuzyHomemaker · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

When my youngest was 2-5, her favorite activity in the universe was finger painting.

So you start with some art smocks, add a plastic tablecloth, and finally, washable finger paints.

This can be done inside or outside and really is fairly easy to clean up. I would swear kids love it because it's like being given permission to be dirty and messy.

u/wine-inacan · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I haveeeeeeee a giraffe, a panda bear, a cow, a unicorn, a lion, a polar bear, a elephant, a kangaroo, a rhino and a piggy. they all have names. they are so cute haha you can see some of them here I'm obsessed. haha. and thanks for the luck :) <3

u/piggychuu · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

Oh man, THIS! You can get so much art supplies for cheap off Amazon....and I'm sure you can get kids arts stuff for even cheaper.

If you want to be a realllly awesome gifter, and if you're going this route, you definitely need to get the GIANT pack of crayons. Who didn't want one of those when they were smaller?

u/thirdjane · 5 pointsr/beyondthebump

What about small, baby safe toys?

Finger puppets- a decent deal because one set would fill multiple eggs if you put one in each.

Sensory balls

Toy animals- as long as they're big enough to not pose a choking hazard

Crayons- toddler crayons come in all shapes these days!

Or if she's not big on putting stuff in her mouth, Fridge magnets if you don't already have them

I like the idea of cereal/puffs though! Can she have teddy grahams or goldfish? I know there are some dairy-free recipes for both on pinterest (Not sure if they're egg-free though)

u/unicorn_factory · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Yo! Happy early gift day! How old are you going to be?

As for the contest, this is what I'd like. I'm in desperate need of some new colored pencils.

u/tragopanic · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Washable fingerpaints! Let 'em be artsy! I recommend doing this in your kitchen or somewhere with tile, though, just to be on the safe side. Plus you can give their finished artwork to their parents, who will see that you entertained them without just plopping 'em in front of a TV.

u/homeallday · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I think, aside from gift cards, this is cheapest thing on my lists. School supplies! WOO!

My kid goes through sidewalk chalk like lightning, even when we catch it before its gets left out in the rain. I've found that either this or this are the best prices.

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is probably the hardest thing someone can go through. Even though you were there, I know she thought of you and didn't blame you. Dogs are awesome like that =) Here are some of those smelly markers that are pretty much notorious for kids getting high off anything they can.

u/digisake · 3 pointsr/teachinginjapan

I teach at the elementary level, so for student souvenirs I ordered some scratch and sniff stickers and also scented markers to grade their worksheets. The novelty of smelly stickers and markers is something they really don't have much of or even know about here in Japan, so the kids are always mystified that these stickers smell like mint chocolate chip, cherry, nacho cheese, etc. It's kind of a culture point too since I tell the kids that I received these stickers all the time from my homeroom teachers growing up :)

u/AJPowers17123 · 2 pointsr/rarepuppers

Creepy. At least when I sneakily leave weird gifts for other people, I make sure I bought enough for everyone! Dispersed weirdness seems less weird... and who doesn't love a bit of non sequitur adorableness?

And it states it on the front in your link. OP's package clearly does not say "short" on the front.

And even if it does say that on the back, you can't deny that it's an shitty move by the company to use a larger box like this. It's clearly designed to make it look like they're full-length.

[edit: I found the listing for OP's product on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00125NZWC . I can't find it on crayola.com though. And yes, it clearly states "Mini" in the product listing, but again, the packaging is obviously designed to make you think they're full-length.]

I forgot to add that I love using [Chalk Pastels] (http://www.amazon.com/Pastels-Drawing-Scrapbooking-Assorted-Colours/dp/B000BKYB2M) for this. This is the same exact thing as hair chalk, only 100x cheaper.

I would love this as my Pesky AddOns

Try this: https://www.amazon.com/Crayola-Washable-Finger-Paints-4-Count/dp/B002VBXL52

It's non-toxic, since it's meant to be used by kids, so it should be safe for what you're planning.

The huge pack of sharpies or felt tip pens or the big smelly markers! These are teacher tools that we use all day every day!

Used something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Pastels-Drawing-Scrapbooking-Assorted-Colors/dp/B000BKYB2M

I did one coat of Flat then applied the black soft pastel then sealed it with Flat topcoat again.

[srs] They're not colors I would think of when someone says pastel. The swatches, however, look like pastel chalks used for art so there's that. :p

I don't wanna grow up. I need this to give my sister in law a heart attack when I show up to finger paint with her girls!

u/salvagestuff · 2 pointsr/Teachers

I would give a portion as just cash so that she can make decisions on what to get throughout the school year. Situations do change and require a corresponding expense.

Amazon has lots of classroom packs of stuff. A classroom box of markers perhaps. https://www.amazon.com/Crayola-Classpack-Assortment-Educational-All-Purpose/dp/B0002T3WLS

I can tell you that teacher needs will always vary from person to person. Classroom setups are different, what the school provides will be different, the socioeconomic situations of the students will be different. Maybe a shopping spree type of thing where you agree to buy a certain amount of stuff but leave the selection up to her.

u/SpiritDragon · 1 pointr/coolguides

And you haven't gotten it for her why...?

I'll help you out, why go for 64 when you can make up for lost time with THIS mega box of 152 + sharpener + holder: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00CI6J3HA/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_0qVDDb8XE5PVA

Less than $5 is expensive?

I can't stand getting date coupons made with highlighter. I'm a Mr. Sketch kind of guy.

u/WhiteHeather · 8 pointsr/mylittlepony

Where does one procure a telescoping crayon tower?! I had the 96 crayon set back in the day, but I've never even seen anything larger than that.

Found it! though I've never seen it in an actual store.
