I AM IN YOUR SITUATION! Just got on this board three days ago. Spent $200 over the past three days and I've drastically improved my wardrobe.
1. Go through the right hand guides of knowing what fits you and what not. If you're an athletic type, go to /r/malefashionadvice there is a post on athletic builds if you fit that description. The most important thing is understanding what fits. I bought a medium out of shame of rather not buying a small convincing myself that the somewhat baggy look was better. I went back to smalls and I realized how much better I looked.
2. Shoes! Get yourself a pair of from what a newbie understands as "classy" shoes. You're in college so you're surrounded by meat heads, swag vags, and sweatpants wearing ants, and the occassional look at me I wear crazy shit. Most of the time, they're wearing Nikes, Addidas, Underarmor, and other shit that you probably have. You'll get the occassional mocassin and boots, but what'll make you really stand out in terms of fashion is your shoes. This is good. MFA is (in my opinion off a brief 3 day lurking): classy, mature, timeless, and just overall attractive male attire.
So! The investment I made were Brown Suede Clarks for $70 @ Journeys in NYC Best investment so far. I've never owned anything so nice yet casual as these shoes. They're extremely comfortable.
For $21 you can get Seude Oxfords at JC Penny. Another cheap and truly great shoe. Just looks plain good with anything. I got mine for $15 because I was very patient and nice to the saleswoman (mid 50s); she gave me a wink and said I'll take some off for ya.
3. Pants I would go again with the suggestion of jeans. 511 - Skinny, 514 - Slim Straight. These are Levi's obviously. I've owned Arizona, Lee, and Wrangler; Levi's are just unbeatable. For $40 and sometimes $30 you can get a pair. I would get one pair of Levi's. Make sure it's a pair you definitely would love.
One pair of Khakis. If you're in New York City, get over to Uniqlo and get yourself a pair of $30 really good quality chinos (khakis). They can be tailored in the store so don't be afraid if you see 33x36 pants or 30x34 pants. They can be cut for free. Otherwise stop by Amazon to get D1 Slims or Alphas.
GAP has a sale going on for 40% off or 30% without a coupon. They have a limited selection of pretty good quality khakis that are fitting and are decent when it comes to price ($40-$50).
4. Tops Old Navy. It was up there that their premium t-shirts are on sale for Buy One Get One Free. They're pretty good quality for $6 bucks a pop ($12 for one, so you get 2 for essentailly $6). I grabbed some myself. Theres a coupon for 10% online somewhere. I used it. However, Old Navy fits may not be so kind on you as they are with me. As their sizes scale, it scales wider; it does not scale with benevolence longer.
Graphic Tees are alright in college. Again plain simple colors/patterns will distinguish you from the highschool attire that even these 2nd semester freshies will be wearing.
For your budget, I would take your time shopping the clearance racks of most department stores. I went to JCPenny the other day and found a slim fitting GREAT purple J. Ferrar shirt for $7. For the way it fits and the decent quality, this button down shirt was an absolute steal. I also bought 2 $12 dollar button downs from Macys that happened to fit me perfectly. Again it's on where you're looking.
Polos Polos are easy to come by. Old Navy has em as do most stores. Whether you like them with a logo or plain, even Ralph Lauren Polos can be spotted on the cheap. Do you barging.
5. Outerwear Cardingans are on clearance in the Old Navy rack for $6-12. I picked up one. I picked up a great fitting hoodie from there as well for $7. Fits me perfect and shows off my muscles /flex.
If you've heard of a store called Against All Odds, they have a good selection of outwear (more swagster area and ghetto-fab), but it's better especially for the athletic fit. They have some sales and the quality isn't atrocious. You can check that out.
Thrifting Theres a thread on the side; hopefully you don't need a link.
Lets Review
What I did in the past 3 days:
Total: $193
Hopefully that'll set you up. If you're not iffy on spending that much on Clarks, then there is more in your budget for other things like pants or underwear.
Anyways, go here if you want $100 starter kits.
Good Luck and let me know of your great finds.
The only link you provided that I approve of are the Sperry Top-Siders. I found the Ice to be very versatile and the solid black have recieved compliments as they aren't very common. Both versatile. Good with shorts and could even be formal enough for a summer wedding. Oatmeal, Sahara/Brown Buc Brown for a basic, well, brown.
For a watch I'll make a few personal suggestions. Of course, the Timex Easy Reader, Brown & Black. Bonus: Black face. This Seiko for a silver watch and I like this black Citizen Eco Drive as well.
Get some basic chino's in a good slim fit like the Dockers Alpha Khaki and some basic flat front shorts from Patagonia.
American Apparel for some staples. Cut down on your graphic tee's and get some plain stuff! I really like the Tri-Blend 50/25/25 Track Shirt for tee's, so comfortable. The black is actually a really dark grey, because of the nature of 'the blend', I really like it and it matches these dark grey twill plimsolls I have perfectly. They have great thin sweaters and cardigans too, browse what's available on Amazon, go on their website to see better images and what else they offer.
I don't mean to totally disregard your choices, I'm just showing you some items that I like, some good basics, and that's all I can muster before I head to bed.
Also, are you sure you're really a 32 inch waist at 6ft 150lbs?
We are almost exactly the same size -- I am 5'7" and a shade under 160. 30" inseam is also too long for me, and I prefer absolutely no break.
I really love the Dockers Alpha Khaki in Slim Tapered, and the great thing is that you can get them with a 29" inseam, which is perfect for me.
You'll see they're normally $50 on Amazon. I know that seems like a lot, but consider the fact that you're getting a well-fitting pair of pants that will be fairly durable and meet multiple needs.
You can also set up a price alert on a site like camelcamelcamel.com and wait for your preferred colors and sizes to go on sale. Starting with tan and grey is a great idea, as those colors will go with most anything.
For jeans, I'd start with Levis 511s, again with a 29" inseam. The Rinsed Playa is a popular and versatile color. After that you can go for black or grey.
As for shoes, I would keep an eye out for inexpensive ones in the B/S/T thread. I'm assuming you're on your feet most of the time at your retail gig, and most cheap shoes are not going to be comfortable for that. Better to find something used and higher-quality that won't kill your feet. I think best of all would be to assemble a set of shoes, three or so pairs.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
I looked through previous MFA posts for weekend bags/duffels but loved the Montague as soon as I saw it..
Picked these up for casual weekend wear. They fit pretty slim on the thighs but they feel alright! I usually wear J.Crew's urban slim fit which fits me perfectly but I wanted to branch out and try the Alphas from MFA advice.
These feel even slimmer than the Dockers Alpha Chinos. I'm using these for more casual work days at the office during the summer months. Kinda hoping for something a tad roomier but don't want to wear parachute pants either.
*****
What's Next? Saving up for some OSB Navy Suede Red Brick Trail Oxfords, looking around for some lightweight slim-fit (not as slim as the BB's Milano-Fit or Dockers Alpha fit) wool trousers for the office (ePaulet?), etc. I've looked around MFA but was wondering if ePaulet is where I should look?
I think part of this will depend on where you're living (you don't have to be too specific, but a region and climate at the least would help). Your body build will also help (don't need a pic, just a generalization). As far as pants go though, I always recommend Docker's Alpha Khakis (1, 2) because they're so sturdy and versatile -- I wear mine in the office and casually. I frequent boots pretty heavily, but dependent upon your budget this might my be feasible. Clark's Desert Boots are a great starter chukka, and are also very versatile for a wide range of wardrobes (I don't personally own a pair, but my friends do and they're quite fantastic). I'm not too big on sneakers, but I do own a pair of maroon(ish) Onitsuka Tigers (1, 2) as well as some J. Crew x Nike Killshots, but solid colored Vans (1, 2, 3) and Hi-Top Converse (1, 2) are some mainstays as well (you might also want to look into the Jack Purcell Converse as well (1, 2, 3, 4). I'll post a little more later, as well as links, but just hit up Amazon for most of these things (hope this helps).
Edit: Links.
Khakis are pretty loose and stacking up at the bottom. Pretty par for traditional business casual, but I think something closer to your actual figure would be more flattering.
Shirt fit is fine.
Both the khakis and shirt (in addition to being a perfect execution of the Jeff Bezos uniform) are both super light-pastel colors. The boots are not - so it's a big transition going from pants to boots.
Easy way to make it less bland would be:
I've been on a four work trips with my Rucker 25L and one with my GR2 40L. Each trip was flying in Monday and flying out Friday afternoon.
For the Rucker trips, I didn't take my laptop (I took a different bag the first week and left it up there), but I imagine the experience would have been the same with a laptop in a GR1.
For every trip I packed my clothes inside Eagle Creek compression packing cubes. I love these things because you can either compress them if you're not carrying much, or leave them open for big cubes.
I wore one set of clothes and packed one extra pair of pants and two more of everything else. Everything was synthetic or merino wool. I washed clothes with Dr. Bronners in the hotel sink twice (except pants, which I just alternated). The key to fitting everything is lightweight travel pants. I live by these UBTech Travel Chinos. The are super comfortable, fold down to nothing and are decent enough looking to pass for business casual. I got them at Costco for $20/pair.
For the GR2 trip, the weather was much colder, so I also packed long johns and workout clothes, and didn't use the compression zippers on the packing cubes. I also brought some extra outerwear that went into the outer section of the bag.
If you can fit everything in a Rucker/GR1, it is a great travel experience. I got to sit in a front row seat on a Southwest flight that everyone kept passing up because my Rucker squeezed into a tiny sliver of overhead bin up front. Plus your stuff never touches the gross floor of the men's room.
The advantage that a GR2 has is that you can separate "flight" items from "non-flight" items. What I mean is, I don't need access to my cubes or toiletries or most of my electronic cables at the airport (get TSA Pre-Check btw). All of that stuff goes in the main section of the GR2. Anything I might want at the airport or on the plane goes in the outer section. That stuff includes a jacket, snacks, books, battery, etc. I don't have to repack the whole bag every time I pull one of those things out.
I'm 6 foot and 165ish pounds, but I'm also 22. Here are some quick staples of my wardrobe that I'd recommend that are safe enough that you won't be made fun of and that you can still find cheaply.
LEC button ups - I sized small but you may be able to get away with mediums since you're a bit bigger than I am. These are cheap as hell on sale so they're great to get a lot of, in case you're worried about wearing the same shirt too often.
Levi's 508 - I have an above average thigh/ass to waist proportion, so these achieve a skinnier look while not strangling my dick. My pair is rigid envy and I use a cuff. Stock photos are bad btw.
Dockers Alpha Khakis - Same deal as the jeans. These might be a little more tight in the thigh/dick region, but I still like mine a lot.
Sperries / Keds - Boat shoes are great for casual wear, although obviously a ton of people are going to be wearing them. A cheap pair of keds (plimsolls) are also good, and fewer people tend to wear them.
[American Optical Aviators] (http://www.pilotshop.nl/contents/media/helmet.jpg) - These bad boys used to be standard issue for pilots and I'm pretty sure that they were worn by astronauts during the apollo missions, so you know they're a good value at only $40.
Belt - I got a custom belt made at Narangasset Leathers that's pretty decent for $45, if I remember correctly. Any belt will do, but don't lay down money on a cheap one if you can get some decent leather. You'll end up throwing it out after a year or two of frequent use, and that's just a waste of money.
Harrington jacket - I really like this style of jacket and I have a wool version of the one pictured here, although mine is a much slimmer fit (I just couldn't find a good photo in under a minute). It's very simple and functional. If you can snag a cheap baracuta on ebay (usually around 100-150), you'll be getting a nice made-in-england jacket that comes with two zippers, meaning you can slightly unzip the bottom one while sitting, which gets rid of that weird poof that you get from being in that position.
I find that all of these go well together and I'm sure MFA agrees too. Keep in mind that these won't guarantee your drowning in pussy, but if you make sure to get clothes like these that are properly fitted, you might just find yourself waist deep.
It may be a bit unorthodox, but my "suit" is comprised of Dockers D1s (matching the color of your coat, of course) and any well fitting suit coat. You can get the pants for ~$45, coat for ~$150-200. You could shell out more to get that coat well tailored. It looks much better than what any of my friends are wearing.
Yes, I know that the pants are technically khakis and not suit pants. They're all dress pants. No one will notice unless they grab your pants and feel them. You will look fashionable for a fraction of the price. Trust me on this. I've gotten a lot of compliments on my "suit." It is MUCH harder (and expensive) to find slim fit pants in a matching suit set. Just make sure that the inseam is the right length and you're fine.
Edit: These are Dockers D1's.. I'd go with the gray (fog) pair and find a matching coat. Get it tailored to look slim cut. You seem to have a very similar build to me so it should look good. Gray also might not look best with your shoes, so you could spend the ~$250 you have left on a new pair of shoes.
Pants:
[2-3 pairs of Dockers Alpha Khakis (slim/skinny fit) in a variety of colors, be sure to check back there if the color you want is out of stock.] (http://www.amazon.com/Dockers-Alpha-Khaki-Tapered-Pebble/dp/B004VQ9C80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377038536&sr=8-1&keywords=dockers+alpha+khaki)
2-3 pairs of Levis 511s (slim/skinny fit) also in a variety of colors; or any pair of pants of your amazon WL, as long as you have jeans cause they were very versatile and go with pretty much anything
Shirts:
Demin shirt from H&M; you can wear it as is or layer it and put a tshirt under it and leave it unbuttoned
Simple Long Sleeved Tshirt any color your prefer
Cotton button up also very good for layering or wearing alone; any color you prefer
Maroon Cotton Tshirt
Cotton Graphic Tshirt
I would also recommend pretty much any shirt from here: http://shop.cottonon.com/shop/men/t-shirts/ (note: sometimes cheap material though). Also their button ups: http://shop.cottonon.com/shop/men/shirts/ (choose darker colors cause of the fall season; great for layering over graphic tshirts if you need something) REMEMBER TO CHANGE THE REGION TO US
Accessories:
Raybans (only if you can afford them at the moment; they are pretty awesome)
Brown Leather Belt; also recommend you get a black one
Watch #1
Watch #2
Shoes:
Vans Slip Ons
Ralph Lauren Sneak (similar to vans; choose a neutral color preferably)
Canvas sneakers
Canvas Slip Ons
Nike Running Shoes; can be worn as a casual sneaker
Dress Shirt:
Van Heusen Dress Shirt
I hope I helped in any way possible :)
Dress me up
Thanks! Fortunately I was able to just buy the boots, pants, sweater, gloves, facemask, and goggles. I couldn't find a vest or helmet that was right, so I sewed them myself.
I bought upholstery vinyl because it was a lot cheaper than leather and it looked closest to the comic/video game costume.
There wasn't a pattern that was close to what I needed, so I had to just cut out the pieces myself, assemble it, then cut it down to fit.
For the vest there was a middle piece and two side pieces on the back, two pieces for the front to create the double breast, and the collar. I found some cool buttons at a fabric store and sewed them on and cut corresponding holes for them. On the back, I hand embroidered a Spider-Man logo, picture here. It's filled in with black and I outlined it with red and blue.
The helmet was the hardest part. It still didn't come out quite right. I started with the band going around the bottom from ear to ear, then cut out the strips for the top. I sewed the strap for the goggles to the band of the helmet to make it stay, but in a way that also allowed it to move.
As a bonus, I crocheted a pouch to hold my wallet and keys that resembled webbing. It was my first time crocheting so it didn't look very pretty, but that worked out in my favor because it looked more like webbing.
Here are links to the piece I bought:
Boots
Goggles
Pants
Balaclava
It probably took me about a month to complete it, but I wasn't working on it every day. The most time consuming part was the embroidery. With the vest and helmet took a decent amount of time after cutting the pieces and pinning them together, then recutting them to fit better. But actually sewing it all together didn't take much time. As long as you use a sewing machine.
They may not be available at Costco currently, but I love the UBtech pants they sell. Super light weight with zippered rear and a single leg pocket (in addition to the 2 normal ones). Best part? $20 USD.
UnionBay Mens Rainier Travel Chino Pants (36x32, Charcoal) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HE17P8W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_j50mzbP46SH0Q
Shop around. Amazon and other retailers jack the price up when Costco stops carrying them for the year. They always come back though.
The Signature Khaki is probably too formal to replace jeans. It's fairly shiny, and has a permanent crease. The Alpha or Modern Khaki are probably what you're looking for. Note that, in many sizes and colors, the Alpha is $40 on Amazon, so unless you're looking for a particular size/color combination, the Alpha isn't a spectacular deal even with the 30% off.
The Modern Khaki often (usually, even) runs $40 at Kohl's and JCPenney, and you can add a % off coupon there. This is a great way to bring the less formal chinos down to ~$28. Most people feel that the Modern Khaki and Alphas fit similarly, with a similar taper. The Alphas may have a slightly slimmer fit.
This is what I did. JCP will give you a 20% off coupon for creating an online account. Kohl's is similarly easy to find coupons for. The Modern Khaki line was $40 online at JCP until yesterday. It goes on sale often, and the in-store price is usually $40 too.
Additionally, you can get 7% cash back with a Chase Rewards card at JCP, and $10 back on $100 (in a given month) if you link that card to your JCP credit account.
Your in luck, I'm 5'8 176lb 19yrs old, and I have pretty thick calves and Levi's 521 look perfect on me along with dockers alpha slim khakis, and for Levi's go one size down, I'm a 33 and A 32 fits me good, I also suggest you try them on in stores if you can first before purchasing. And I recently got the Baywater peacoat from J.crew which fits me good in medium but it is a tiny bit large in the waist area but you can get it tailored if you wish and yes Peacoats usually look good in any build frame due to it normally looking a bit large.
Yeah, free returns are great! Often when I'm ordering stuff like pants or shoes that require precise sizing, I'll order multiple brands and sizes and then return the ones that don't fit. It's super convenient, too. You can just print out the UPS label on Amazon, tape it on the box, and drop at your local UPS store.
As for brands, I don't have too many suggestions for you. If I were getting a pair of slim black pants, I'd go with Dockers Alphas. They have a nice cut and also hold up pretty well.
The problem with Dockers is that they're more on the casual side. If you're looking for something dressier, maybe check out the Dockers D1. If you're looking for actual dress pants in wool, I'm afraid I don't know of any good brands off the top of my head.
When I did the OML last year in December, I wore Patagucci Capilene Lightweight Leggings. I regretted that choice maybe twice. It was definitely not something I was worried about. Most of the trail follows a decent path, or at least a path that is clear of bush.
PMags recommends these pants as an alternative to the classic Prana Zion Pants.
I've tried on the Patagonia Terrebonne pants on at the Patagucci store in Austin. I REALLY liked them. But it's hard to justify the premium price. They're really comfortable though. If feels like you're wearing Nike Dri-Fit material all up and down your legs. I'll probably end up buying these to be honest and trying them out this winter.
This seems like a good place for this question. Clearly it wouldn't require an entire post...
These Dockers Alpha fit me perfectly, but most colors are discontinued in my size. What would be a comparable fit?
Perhaps I'm over complicating things. Would these be comparable? or would these D1s be more similar?
Thanks in advance.
Dockers Alpha Khakis have a pretty good selection of colors, they're in your price range, and they fit really well. There's other fits and fabrics to choose from as well.
Busy week ordering a few things:
Levis Trucker I have one already in Bleacher light but this is for fall
Slim cotton-cashmere grey sweater from J.Crew
Donegal Shawl sweater from J.Crew
Gap rich ginger 1969 pants
Dockers Alpha in Dark Pebble
Dockers modern in Grey and New British Khaki
I get the J.Crew stuff in tonight. :)
Great writeup, and a new way to smuggle a cocktail thru security!
ExOfficio Dylan Jeans are thinner, lighter and dry faster than regular denim. They look classy for jeans too...
Unionbay Rainer come in up to 42W.
Haggar Cool 18 are 100% polyester and wear well without looking too formal.

Buying slim fit dockers d1s in cloud white will make you look 10-15x better.
Also, look into buying some boat shoes.
Good luck.
Docker's Alpha Khakis in frontier brown. I've got a pair, love them, although they're best in the fall.
Dockers Alphas are a pretty good casual pair. Sign up for their email and get 20% off. I'd get them from Amazon for cheaper - select the gravel color. If you sign up for Amazon's clothing email list you can get 20% off too.
H&M always has cheap, well fitting chinos for around $30. Sign up for their email list and get 20% off 1 item there as well. The quality isn't the best.
Probably too late for today but does anyone know what these Chukka boots might be or can anyone recommend similar Chukkas in the same style (3 eyelets, flat sole, light brown color)? I asked over in /r/MFA and was directed over here. I saw them on Amazon's page for Dockers Alphas. Thanks!
What Levi's fit would these Dockers D1 chinos most resemble? 501, 514 (ideally), 511? And which two shades would look best with brown leather Clark's Bushacres?
Try the docker's alpha khaki, they're pretty cheap and come in a pretty wide array of colors and sizes on amazon.

Also on the black, the docker's logo is also black, unlike in the picture. The other colors it does appear to be orange though.
Feel no need to buy all of these, nor need to buy the highest quality. The following break are "Must haves"
9” Lineman Pliers - Klein is the standard
Knife – Utility - something comfortable to hold.
25 foot Tape Measure - Don't get bottom of the barrel. DeWalt and Milwaukee have 2 packs, one 16' and one 25' for decent prices. I'd store the 16' because you WILL lose the 25' one at some point.
Material Pouch eventuallyget a Tool Pouch, so you have ready access to your tools and materials in their own spots.
Six Screwdrivers (3 Phillips/3 Straight)
OR One 11-in-1 plus a beater flathead, I use a 1/4"(head) x4" (shaft) for my beater, because if it breaks, bends or chips, I can just go to Sears and get a brand new one. Happens about once per year, and it is faster than sending it into Klein.
Torpedo Level
Tool Box/bag
Claw Hammer
Hacksaw
Flashlight
Below is optional, but very good to have. Work up to these ones. You can chip away like $20 per week and in no time you will have a decent set.
Allen Wrenches to 3/8”
8” Diagonal Pliers
Two Pair of Adjustable Pliers (Channel Locks)
Needle Nose Pliers
Awl
Square
Small File
Keyhole Saw
Nut Drivers to ½”
10” Crescent Wrench
3/8” – 9/16” Open End Wrenches

Should I buy Dockers D1 slim fit as dress pants? or are they too casual? I don't know if the material is like a hard cotton or smooth silky dressy
Amazon carries both Docker's Modern Fit and the Alpha Khakis, so I got a pair of each to check the differences in fit as they often have different prices.
[I own a pair of these and like them.] (http://www.amazon.com/Dockers-Alpha-Khaki-Flat-Front-British/dp/B005CJNXDU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453088466&sr=8-1&keywords=alpha+dockers) There's a bunch of branding on the inside of the pants, which is kind of funny. (Edit: Should probably mention I got "Safari Beige")
Someone help me choose
chino 1 - dockers alpha
chino 2 - unbranded 201 chino
chino 3 - epaulet rivet
I like this Carhartt tool apron. Carhartt Men's 100 Percent Cotton Adjustable Duck Nail Apron,Black,Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NHDAPEI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ArA2Db8ABJSAT
Chinos are trousers like these:

The only one here that is olive is the Camo one:
http://www.amazon.com/Dockers-Alpha-Khaki-Tapered-Front/dp/B004VQ9APK
They all have silly names too, like Gravel, and Dark pebble, and Firebrush.
They are a lot cheaper and more colors on amazon:
Here
Does Amazon's picture their british khaki chinos accurately represent the actual color of the pants? I saw in another thread yesterday, can't find it again, that shows it being a lot darker and then I found another saying it's just as light as the picture. I'm trying to find a more saturated color to wear this fall/winter.

Dockers Men's Alpha Khaki Slim Tapered Flat Front Pant
What shoes is that model wearing for the gravel chinos?
Here you go
Dockers Alpha comes in a bunch of colors and 30 inseams.
I was able to get the Docker's Alpha at Amazon for 46.99 and cheaper shipping, but they're low on stock.
