Hi there. Just want to say that you're not alone; there are many who totally understand what you're going through, myself included. My hair loss began at the age of 15, when I could not understand for the life of me why it was happening. As a young, impressionable teenager, I had deep struggles with self-image, confidence, young womanhood, etc. and seeing/feeling so much hair falling out every time I took a shower multiplied all of those issues. I remember spending hours crying in the shower over the course of my teenage years. Then in my early twenties, it gradually became an afterthought; I found myself preoccupied with school, new friends, and jump-starting my career. Today, I am 32 years old, and I'm still losing hair. I still hate my genes and I'm still really scared because I don't know how I'm going to tackle this problem; every day it's on my mind. But my mental state is so much better. I realized that I don't want my feelings about hair loss taking away the joys in my life, everything that I've worked so hard for or was blessed with. So I decided to treat hair loss as a more commonly known health issue (because I honestly think that there are more of us out there, we just HATE to talk about it). I would lightheartedly mention (when it makes sense in a conversation) that I've personally experienced hair loss, starting with my closest friends and family whom I felt I could truly understand my struggles. Then it branched out to being able to joke about it here and there with friends, where I actually found some others who have had similar struggles that I could share feelings/thoughts with more confidentiality and at deeper levels.

All this is to say that you are definitely not alone in this, and that it is so important to find someone close to you to share your feelings with regularly. Having support from loved ones is crucial when going through something like this. I haven't invested in a therapist yet, but I plan to as soon as I have the means, and I hope you can, too. Remember that you are more than your hair loss. You are valuable. You are needed. You are loved.

Also, there are a few very effective methods to minimize the appearance of hair loss, to help you while you are nurturing your heart and mental health. I've found certain hairstyles that conceal affected areas (depending on the pattern of loss) and have found ways NOT to style my hair, by trial and error. And now that there are affordable colored dry shampoos (like this one by Batiste), sometimes I can mask it completely. This has worked for me while I get used to the idea of wearing toppers soon (I may try them this year!) and eventually, wear wigs like everyone else. Because, really, no one can escape hair loss to at least some degree in their lifetime, except for a verrry small percentage of people who were just that lucky. It's a byproduct of aging. I kind of see it like hitting puberty earlier than everyone else in your class - ride out the awkwardness until the rest catch up, holding your emotional resilience in one hand and colored dry shampoo in the other :)

Curtain bangs are easier to style with a large round brush, flat bangs drove me nuts. So nice of your salon to offer maintenance trims!

On the day off, I set pin curls 50s housewife style - on 80-90% air dry freshly washed hair. Simple pattern of sectioning hair from ear to ear in 4-6 zones, alternating direction of a curl in every row. Working from the nape up, finger curled and secured with metal clips. It works if you're home all day and want perfect hair for a night out. I love Suavecita hair pomade, it's brushable, light and smells amazing. In heatless method it can be used before curling and to shape curls after brushing them.

Express method would be to prep hair with a heat protectant hair spray like Schwarzkopf Styliste Ultime Crystal Protection, then use a wand curler, set as mentioned above and wait for a full hour to cool. Brush out with a boar bristle brush, set with a pomade and you're good to go.

My favourite heatless overnight curls of all time involves socks or paper towels and it's also an express two strand method, you'll be done in 5 minutes and ready to sleep.

A good dry shampoo to keep texture interesting would be L'Oreal Texture Expert Fresh Dust it's superfine, actually cleans hair without snapping it and smells amazing. I measure all dry shampoos against it and no contenders so far.

Hope this Obnoxiously long read saves you some time in the future!

For a dry shampoo, I recommend two products: the first is the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo, it is a good all-purpose dry shampoo for about fifteen dollars. It has a neutral, unisex scent that is far less offensive than the Batiste® one that's found in pharmacies everywhere. If you have an oily scalp and hair, I suggest the Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle - Oily Hair as its a little more heavy-duty.

About the leave-in conditioner, there are a few great ones under twenty dollars - and the great thing is that a bottle will last you at least six months (at least, if you use an appropriate amount and avoid overdoing it). A classic product is It's A Ten Leave-In Plus Keratin, an all-purpose leave-in spray that moisturizers, smooths and prevents breakage. If you're seeking something to add a bit more shine, Biosilk Silk Therapy and CHI Keratin Silk Infusion both strengthen and condition hair while leaving an appealing sheen. If you're looking for something that moisturizes and softens hair but leaves more of a matte finish, then Alterna Caviar Complete Correction Hair Cream is one of my favorite haircare products - bar none. Finally, if you're looking for something that isn't a serum or cream-texture like the four leave-in conditioners I listed, then I recommend the SACHAJUAN Leave In Conditioner which is a spray-on liquid leave-in conditioner that is very hydrating but still rather light; and it has a pleasant fragrance to boot.

All of the products I mentioned are around $15 - $25 dollars. Sorry about the essay, but I buy and experiment with a lot of haircare products so I like to give people options when it comes to which products to use. Hope this helps with what you're looking for!

YES to dry Shampoo. I LOVE love love Osis+ Refresh Dust (not an affiliate link). Dry Shampoo is a personal thing based on your hair, but this is the one that I have found is the best for me. The white powder goes away with a finger comb-through, and there is no sign of oil and no gross product feeling at your roots. It just feels like I have clean hair. That one is pricey, but worth it for me. I like Bautiste as well, and when I get that I use the dark tinted one. But that feels like there is something in my hair and Im not a huge fan of that feeling. Again, personal preference.

As for the wet clothes, maybe a drying rack in the bathroom? I usually throw them straight into the washer (2 kids, ALWAYS laundry to do) or hang them on the drying rack until we have a load to do

I received it as a gift, but here's a link to amazon! It's a really great product.

And I'm so glad you are a Friends fan as well :)

Better quality products!! TIGI makes a really good dry shampoo, minimal smell. My absolutely favorite though is eva nyc it smells like a nice perfume (definitely not like old lady perfume!!) BUT the smell definitely fades after about an hour.

Using a good quality conditioner will help keep your scalp from over-producing oils as well. I swear by pureology, and they make many different products for different types of hair. Look into which one sounds right for your hair, and buy a travel sized bottle at Ulta!

Coal tar definitely isn't the most effective descaler. The best descaling agent by far is urea. You can massage a urea cream in your scalp and leave for a few hours or overnight, or use a urea shampoo such as SebaMed's Extreme Dry skin Relief Shampoo, which is 5% urea.

Another interesting urea shampoo I've not tried is Eucerin's Dermo Capillaire. Eucerin is a very good German brand. This shampoo combines urea with lactic acid (which is yet another keratolytic) and polidocanol (a mild anaesthetic that helps reducing itching). The combination of urea, lactic acid and polidocanol was described in this paper (where they use it together with Chinese licorice, which has antibacterial properties) with very good results. This product also comes as a leave-in scalp treatment

Your description of your scalp sounds quite a bit like seborrhoeic dermatitis, which is fungal in nature. Experiencing seborrhoeic dermatitis together with psoriasis is so common it has a name: sebopsoriasis. We have a wiki page on how to distinguish the two, but ideally a doctror should examine you. It can look very similar.

The combination of urea and lactic acid has been studied to help seborrhoeic dermatitis, too, by the way.

Get Tresemme's dry shampoo! I love the smell of Herbal Essence's dry shampoo, but it does leave a film, and makes it feel greasier. Tresemme's gives off a way cleaner feel. I got like a 2 for one on amazon or something. Or maybe they just come in packs of 2.

Link to the 2 pack on Amazon. I feel like a commercial, but I honestly give it the Ron Swanson guarantee.

Ok, I've tried a few dry shampoos and here's what I came up with.

  • Got2b Rockin' It - This stuff works the best, though one can of it does not seem to last very long.
  • Suave - This dry shampoo works very well. It's almost as good as Got2b's. One weird thing is that the directions say to spray the powder in, then press it with your hand so your heat can help it work. I haven't seen ones like this before, but it does work better if you do it like that. It's definitely great for the price.
  • Tresemme - I don't know why I've tried this multiple times, because each time it was just terrible. I think I had two cans that just stopped spraying, and simply oozed after using it once. It's a crappy product, and it doesn't last long before it starts sputtering.

You say you have fine hair and are afraid of weighing it down. My hair also weighs down easily with product, and I love how dry shampoo seems to give it more body and oomph. I usually use it when I straighten my hair so I don't have to wash it and re-straighten it the next day. I don't use it multiple times in a row without washing my hair though since it will start to build up at that point and make your hair gross.

EDIT: Also, although I haven't tried it, I've heard a lot of good things about Batiste. Unfortunately it's just not sold in stores in my area and I don't really feel like buying it online.

EDIT 2: Something else I just thought of -- dry shampoo can sometimes make my scalp a bit itchy, so I don't know if it will affect your eczema at all.

I use Aussie Miracle Moist Conditioner to clean and moisturize and Suave Men Medium Hold Styling Paste to style. When I'm doing a bun or ponytail I'll do 3 or 4 sprays of [Ogx Argan Oil of Morocco] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CQ7S4B2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Sz7QCbQEZNPMN) for a little extra shine and to tame the flyaways. I'm still on the fence about that one though. I might switch to a different spray after this runs out but I LOVE the Aussie conditioner. Highly recommend. My wife started stealing my conditioner and finally confessed lol now we buy double when we're at the store.

I use the conditioner every day, and only use shampoo about once or twice a week to wash off the build up from the styling paste. The styling paste is nice because it holds my curls together without feeling oily or heavy and it dries to a soft matte finish and doesn't look wet. Both products are under $5 at Target.

Do you use the "Real Botanicals" version like this or the regular bottle like this + this

Thanks! Hair looks great!

u/princessyrachie · 1 pointr/FancyFollicles

I use this great dry shampoo every week on my hair you just tap a light amount out (it's like baby powder) on your part, rub it the pads of your fingers and take 1 1/2 inch sections vertical across the top of your head doing the same thing. It absorbs the oil in your hair and makes your roots look fresh and clean.

u/ashhole613 · 2 pointsr/TrollXChromosomes

Dry shampoo works wonders, mainly for taking care of greasiness as well as providing volume and better control. I'm so glad it's become so easy to find in the last 5 or 6 years. This is a staple in my hair product collection. I always keep at least two cans on hand. Thankfully the new ones no longer leave hair looking powdery or tacky.

u/lets-go-to-the-zoo · 2 pointsr/beauty

It's a bit spendy, but Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray is PHENOMENAL. It's like dry shampoo on steroids. It does exactly what it says - gives your hair that dry, textured, roughed-up, lived-in look. A little goes a long way - start with a few small spritzes throughout your hair as you lift and separate, then rough it up with your hands (really work it in). You can then smooth out the top layer if there's too much magic happening. This is used on dry hair.

On the other end of the spectrum, my go-to dry shampoo is a really cheap one (and I've tried a TON). Tresemme Volumizing Dry Shampoo. I've had no issues with white residue and I use it day after day with great results.

u/melorga · 1 pointr/HaircareScience

I too have fine hair which gets greasy within a day, and I know firsthand that not everyone's hair eventually adjusts to be less greasy. I'd recommend a powder dry shampoo (I like Blow Pro, or Giovanni Powder Power), and a leave in conditioner on the ends.

I put a little powder dry shampoo on before bed, to let it soak in through the night, and then re-do it in the morning for volume. To be honest, I still get powder under my fingernails if I scratch my head. I'm sure I could spend a longer time combing it out, but I think it's the build-up that helps the hair "stand up" a bit and appear perky.

u/OppositeFeature · 2 pointsr/loseit

With dry shampoo your hair will always feel a bit gross but you kind of get used to the texture.

I prefer the Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo to Batiste as it is a little more lightweight, and definitely worth the price. I use it at least 3x a week and I've got loads left after 5 months. Also non-amazon sites tend to have discount codes and stuff so it's a bit less painful to buy it haha.

I also apply it liberally in my roots at the night before I go to bed and massage it in a little bit with my fingers, but not much so it's still chalky looking and then it gets absorbed/sets in overnight. Definitely still passes for a second day after. But as I have longer hair, if it really isn't looking too fresh, I wear my hair in a sleek ponytail or bun the next day, then work out again in the evening and then wash my hair.

u/Samphati · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

I've used Batiste and Psssssst extensively, and I tried Not Your Mother's a few times. Of the three I'd say Psssssst works the best for me, and the other two seem about the same.

Batiste is definitely the most powdery, so that may be a problem depending on your hair color. I also agree with the other poster about Batiste making my hair look less greasy versus others making it look freshly washed.
