Your best bet is a DVD Recorder with VHS. I had one from Panasonic that output HDMI at 720p or 1080i. If you can find something with similar specs (VHS and HDMI) from another brand, I would say go for it. This is a link to the model I had: (Amazon). Don’t let that price fool you. I got mine at Goodwill for $15. And I still see comparable units for under $30 pretty often. YMMV.

Why VHS and HDMI matters: better analog video processors. Some DVD recorders are only designed for high quality MPEG2 reproduction. And they scale to 1080p really well, but only do a basic pass through on composite video sources. DVD Recorders with VHS are much more likely to have a video signal process with features like advanced comb filtering, deinterlacing, chroma and luma noise reduction, and the option to scale at a native 4:3 screen ratio, or stretched 16:9.

Good luck.

It looks good, but you seem to do a rapid jump from "buy an antenna and watch TV, done., to a iPTV solution such as Tablo. There are other options available ranging from running a Kodi install on an HTPC or Rasberry PI3, to using a TiVo Romio + antenna + TV for OTA DVR.

Then you also have the option of even cheaper DVR solutions such as the iView 3500STBII ($35)+2TB USB 3.0 HDD ($100) if all you want to do is record broadcast TV like you would have used a VCR 15 years ago. If you really want to, you can even go old-school, and buy a VCR with an ATSC tuner in it, and use a VCR to record TV shows just like you always have been able to.

Another thing, there is no such thing as an HD Antenna. If you live close enough to the broadcast towers, and have a clear LOS, you could use a paperclip to watch TV. I have an RCA ANT-111, a ClearStream 1 + VHF Bipoles, and a 23 year old Phillips-Magnavox amplified VHF/UHF antenna with a built in AB switch. They all work to pick up ATSC signals. "HD Antenna" is just a marketing term.

It's indirect, but there are DVD recorders out there with VHS tape slots. You put the tape in and a blank DVD-R and it will record the VHS to the DVD. Then you can deal with the DVD as simple mpeg2 (or potentially divx) video and rip it as you would any home-made DVD.
Here is an example of such a unit. I own a different model but this one seems like it would do the trick. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-DVD-VR357-Tunerless-Recorder-Combo/dp/B000N7X9AI/qid=1376248031&sr=8-8&keywords=samsung+dvd+vhs# notice that it's only available used, however. These kind of things aren't terribly common. You could run to nearby thrift stores (such as Goodwill) to see if they have any.

While buying one of these isn't ideal, and they're not terribly cheap, it is simpler than buying a TV tuner card for your computer and recording the output manually. With one of these, it's as simple as pushing a button. So it's up to you which way you go. If you only have 2 or 3 tapes you want to copy, maybe you could find someone on craigslist who would be willing to do it for you for a small fee. If you have a dozen+ tapes though, I'd highly recommend a recorder box, since it means fewer headaches.

Couldn't agree more.

The best street riders IMHO are cops. All their training and techniques are available to us civilians too, e.g.

There’s only one that has earned enough respect to vouch for and it’s this one right here

You could buy something like this if you have a lot of VHS tapes to transfer. Put in a tape, put in a dvd-r and press one button, the machine does the rest.

I used to have a vcr/dvd recorder to do the conversion a long time ago. It involves recording the VHS to a blank DVD-R, then you take the DVD-R and use some kind of DVD-R rip software. Something like this, but not the same, but it looks similar.

Alright here's as detailed as I can explain my set up right now.

  • My SNES is using an RF Coax Adaptor cable to connect to an Emerson EWD2204 DVD/VCR Combo
  • I then have a coax cable going from the Player to a Coaxial A/V Selector Switch: 2 In 1 Out in the A slot.
  • I then have a coax cable on the out slot of the A/B switch going into my VISEO tv Model M320SL

This somehow in the past has been able to play SNES on my TV but I'm missing some component that's escaping me right now.
