I can relate to the situation you've described, it's this odd combination of feeling old while being told you're young in life. Its a strange place to be because you know you're a practiced in matters of importance, but given your social status in the culture you live, you have very little clout to work with. Its very difficult situation to be in. This situation is heavily dependent on your culture. Try to study, research, and understand more about the culture that you live in and how it defines life's milestones. It will save you a TON of grief in finding the right milestones to match your internal practiced status. Maybe the culture that surrounds you isnt the right fit? Maybe you'd be happier moving to another culture that values your practice more? One thing that is important is to remember to keep an open mind about life, things will be much easier.
How to help connect the gap for now? If you live in the United States(as I presume you do) your milestones are in large part defined by 2 measurements(not 3), 1. traditional christian values and 2.financial wealth. A huge percentage of American society default to measuring a persons stage of maturity by the milestones set out by traditional christian values. If you have kids, in general the culture will automatically view you as mature by default. If you're single and dont have kids, you can still be considered mature, but more often than not only if you're wealthy. If you don't have kids and aren't wealthy, you shift into a space that is best described as a social limbo. Its kind of a place where the culture perceives that you haven't "made a decision" yet. What is lacking here is a third the measurement, which is knowledge/wisdom. Its not accounted for because it is so often grouped with wealth. This means that if you have one, you automatically have the other. If you have knowledge/wisdom wealth will come automatically. However in a capitalist nation this is not always the case. in fact, it is very common to see wealth and wisdom being mutually exclusive.

Returning to my previous suggestion and my answer to your question, where to go from here is get to a place of a better understanding of the culture that you live in. Do a quick amazon search of textbooks on culture, textbooks on American culture, etc and go to town. Here is one Don't be afraid that these books are 6 years old now, it doesn't really matter the ideas are the same. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck.

I've taught adult students while living in China. If she wants to pay you separately for your work, I'd take it. When teaching adults, I found structure to be VERY important. Most of them "just want to talk" but don't really want you to just talk with them. They often have expectations that they are not fully aware of or able to articulate, but "free talk" for an hour or so at a time gets really old really fast after about 3-4 classes. And making up the structure on your own is a whole other job in and of itself. I leaned heavily on external materials to provide structure, and the best materials I found for the job were the "interchange" series. There are 4 or 5 levels. Book 1 is here: https://www.amazon.com/Interchange-Level-Students-Online-Self-Study/dp/131662031X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=interchange&qid=1570551825&sr=8-1 . These are great because they're readily available both in China and in the US. Your adult student can easily buy them from taobao 淘宝. My local library has them, too. Try to see them in person, look at the levels, choose an appropriate one for your student, then have her buy the set (CD, workbook, student book, and mini-dictionary) for the level you recommend on her side.

Wechat is fine. It's really your only option if you want to communicate directly with Chinese students / their parents. It is THE Chinese chat app, even moreso as China locks out other videoconferencing. Download it, set up a free account, and you're good. I mean, it is a Chinese surveillance app, so don't get to ranting about Xi Jinping or expose yourself.

For reference, the going rate for such a thing in-person in China is a MINIMUM of 200RMB, about $30 / hr. It can go all the way up to about 600RMB depending on the material, confidence of the teacher, area the student is in, etc etc. But I'd say if you want to be on the safe side, $30-40 USD / hr should be no problem. That brings us to the issue of pay: how will she get the money to you? Don't expect it to be easy -- China has ensured that it will not be. She'll probably want to transfer the money on Wechat, as that is what everyone in China is accustomed to doing. That would work great if you had a Chinese bank account to withdraw the funds to. I'm assuming you don't. As far as I know, Wechat will allow you to connect your US bank card / credit card, but WILL NOT allow you to withdraw funds to it. That means you'd have a bunch of useless money sitting in a virtual wallet in wechat. Don't want that. The other option I know of is for the student to set up a Paypal account on the Chinese side (paypal.cn), and transfer to your Paypal account. You'll lose about 4% in the transaction. There might be other options, but China makes getting currency out of the country rather difficult. It's worth addressing this in advance, because it'll take some research and legwork.

Good luck!

There are always a few problems that get students in grammar and writing (I'm a teacher/writer myself). To improve your grammar you must demand DEMAND that everyone correct all of your errors all the time until it becomes automatic. This sounds awful, but it will be worth it, especially once you get to the professional or college level.

To improve your writing on your test you need to: taste your title, use ST words, use your strength, paraphrase a friend, and make meaning.
Taste your title to your writing means to go and use an action/description word in your title to your writing tests. Instead of writing "My Life in English" write something like, "Alive and English" or "On an English Stage" or "Terror and Good Times". Any of those brings in an image and a feeling to your writing; do one, and you'll find your marker immediately gets a favourable impression and gives you a better score.

I can't go into huge detail here (it would take too long), but there's a whole book about it that guarantees to improve your writing score 10-25%. It's on amazon and costs like $3 for an E-reader copy. It's called "Write Better Right Now: An ESL learners guide to acing the toefl". I wrote it after 8 years of teaching ESL and it works. I'm not sure if I should post a link here (https://www.amazon.ca/Write-Better-Right-Now-Instantly-ebook/dp/B071GDJFKD/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1517204562&sr=8-4&keywords=write+better+right+now) , but try the exercise I've suggested and read the first few pages of the book for free to get a feel for it. Hope it helps!

Holy crap, The Bluffs are beautiful.

  • I live in the Catskills.

  • I live near the original Woodstock, which is The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

  • The Catskill Mountains were the backdrop of some of Americas first great artists including Frederic Church and Thomas Cole. In the words of Cole “Must I tell you that nether the Alps nor the Appenines, no, nor even Aetna itself, have dimmed, in my eyes, the beauty of our own Catskills? It seems to me that I look on American scenery, if it were possible, with increased pleasure. It has it’s own peculiar charm – a something not fond elsewhere. I am content with nature: would that I were with art!” 1841

  • It is the birthplace of American fly fishing and home to the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum Filled with lakes, vast forests and deep valleys, the Caskils offers some of the world’s best trout fishing – and its location as the birthplace of American fly-fishing is celebrated at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum.

  • Highest waterfalls in NYS

  • The book, My Side of the Mountain is set near where I currently live.

OH YEAH. He is one of my favorite authors, ever. The Diversity of Life won him a Pulitzer if I recall correctly, and is a must read for anyone who loves non-fiction and biology. Consilience is a heady read and well worth the time. The Future of Life is a call to arms in defense of the environment, and as well written and straightfoward as anyone could ask. Kind of like An Inconvenient Truth, if it was written by one of the most brilliant and silver-tongued biologists of our time instead of the inventor of the internet.

Tha 'Jolly Phonics' materials could be a good start. They're very organized and effective in teaching very young learners. I taught a class at the British Council, Egypt, last year following this curriculum and my students benefited a lot from it.

You can find everything you need about the Jolly Phonics methodology and the materials on the official website: http://jollyreading.com/introduction-to-jolly-phonics/

Another useful resource that might help might is "Very Young Learners (Resource Books for Teachers)". It has a lot of simple, practical activities and photocopiable worksheets that you can easily use without a lot of preparation.

Hope this helps :)

Experience is really what makes a good teacher. CELTA is a good foundation, but 4k is crazy. I did mine in the US and paid the same as mentioned by others in this thread, 1500 USD.

The books I used in my course (which was in May 2013) was mainly Learning Teaching (easily found in PDF format with a bit of googling, send a PM if you need help). The other book we had I don't remember the title, but it had to do with native speakers of other languages, and what to watch out for when they learn English. It was interesting, but I don't think we used it at all in the course.

If you want teaching experience, look for volunteer opportunities in your community. I did some volunteer teaching for an organization aimed at helping refugees live in the US. Your local library will also have some opportunities. Good luck!

If you've got computers, use a4esl.org. tons of good stuff there. same with breakingnewsenglish.com

For general classwork, however, it depends largely on who your students are and what they need. If they can afford Kaplan, then it might be safe to say that they're beyond the "Hello, how are you" stage of English acquisition.

Your students here might want to be grounded in text, so I'd suggest having some sort of text every day. They can be super short tests. One fortune cookie might be the foundation for each lesson. This book is a good start: http://www.amazon.com/Short-Sweet-Texts-How-Them/dp/0140813837

Having some sort of text, be it a fortune, a quote, an epitaph, or even moving up to a haiku or something, provides a grounding for each lesson that I find older students respect.

Example: "Chicken Little only has to be right once."

This little quote packs a huge punch. First, cultural relevance. Do they know the story of chicken little. Bang, story time. Compare / contrast to boy who cried wolf

Homonyms: right.

Vocab: once, twice

Speaking prompt: Is it better to be overly careful or overly trusting?

Thank you for your answer, Minhhale.

I was looking at the following 3 options on Amazon:

  1. https://www.amazon.it/Official-Cambridge-Students-Answers-DVD-ROM/dp/1107620694/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518615985&sr=8-1&keywords=ielts

  2. https://www.amazon.it/trainer-practice-Answers-Scuole-superiori/dp/052112820X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1518615985&sr=8-2&keywords=ielts

  3. https://www.amazon.it/Cambridge-Academic-Students-Authentic-Examination/dp/1316637824/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1518615985&sr=8-4&keywords=ielts

I think you were referring to the third book, am I correct? Would you go with that one or one of the others?

I do not think listening and reading are going to be a problem for me. What I am most concerned about is specific structures I need to use in the Writing task to maximize my grade (e.g. whether I need to write an introduction, how many paragraphs, if there is any particular flow of thought I need to use, and things like these). Are you aware of any resource that could point me in the right direction (apart from www.ielts-simon.com. I would like something more structured, like a book).

EDIT: I was also looking at the Kaplan's book (https://www.amazon.it/Kaplan-IELTS-Premier-Practice-Tests/dp/1506208673/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518616958&sr=8-1&keywords=kaplan+ielts).

I thought the Kaplan's book would be good for test-taking strategies and tips, while the Official Cambridge Guide would be useful because it contains 8 official practice tests. Feels like a solid combination. Do you have any experience with any of them?

These are the main grammar books I use in my classroom. The books have great insight on most rules of English usage. It's available in both Japanese & English.

I use both the Basic and intermediate books religiously. I have both Japanese and English versions as well and they are a godsend.

Hope you find it useful!

There are still many private school jobs in south korea. The public school sector is slowing down and shrinking. However, for someone that is just doing a gap year teaching abroad, I would definitely recommend going to a private teaching institution, a "hagwon."

You don't really need to learn to be a great teacher at these places. The curriculum is set and everything is a step-by-step procedure that has already been worked out by the school.

Other jobs require much more acquisition of teaching skills and learning how to find and use the right activities, etc.

I actually helped my friend edit a book that she wrote about how to get a job teaching ESL. This book is available on amazon and may be useful for you.

Here's a link if you want to check it out.

Thank you for many good tips! The dual language books seem great! I just downloaded this Sherlock Holmes book for free :)

u/cryofabanshee · 2 pointsr/German

The video games seem like a good idea, whatever helps you stay interested I'd say. Watching tv shows to learn a language is always quite tedious at the beginning, but it does get better. It's less about learning vocab and more about internalising proper pronunciation and maybe even getting a feel for the grammar. Imo having that kind of exposure, even if you don't feel like you're fully grasping what they're saying, is the easiest way to develop a sort of "instinct" for how German works, and then getting things like sentence structure right without having to memorise grammar rules. Regarding reading books, maybe try "Parallel text"? I believe they feature both an English text and the German translation. I think the book from the second link is actually for those trying to learn English, but technically that shouldn't matter. Since we're talking about Edward O. Wilson, I highly recommend The Future of Life. It's a little bit dated now, but it remains one of the most important books one can read about climate change.

I read this book about a decade ago, and it gave me a heads up as to what was eventually going to happen to the Great Barrier Reef, the melting of the Siberian permafrost, etc. Even so, he somehow managed to write the whole book with a sense of optimism.

  • Draw a picture of a scene

  • Give advice to a character

  • Change a part of the plot to their liking

  • Write a journal passage as one of the characters

  • Have them predict what will come next.

  • Personal Response to Text: Did you enjoy the text? Do you agree/disagree with anything? Did you find anything surprising? Do you like ____ (a character in the text)?) What adjectives would you use to describe __ (a character in the text)?

Are you familiar with literature circles? I'm intrigued by them after reading Academic Reading Circles but have not yet had a chance to implement them. One blog post on literature circles gave these basic guidelines: First, individually, Ss make a connection. T checks comprehension. Then Ss in groups of four are each assigned a role: discussion director, word searcher, summarizer, illustrator. Give sentence frames for things like synthesizing (can put on a menu board at each table). Have each table record their conversation so T can review later.

Here's an interesting book you should check out. It might explain why biodiversity is important. In overly simplified terms ecosystem services, and more specificially the [resilience](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resilience_(ecology) of these services is often dependent on their diversity (which can help to withstand perturbations such as climate change and invasive species).

I read My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George: http://www.amazon.com/Side-Mountain-Jean-Craighead-George/dp/0141312424

Funny how it worked out though, I actually didn't want to read it initially but my mother forced me to at age 9. It turned out better than expected that's for sure.

This sounds very similar to My Side of the Mountain , except the protagonist doesn't kill and eat the falcon.

I urge you to take some Environmental Science courses, or at the very least, read The Future of Life by Edward O. Wilson. It is a great book because it retains being factual while looking at the problem from an optimistic perspective. The dangers of global climate change are not only unexaggerated, they're underreported and misunderstood, which is largely marred by society's growing cynicism toward the science behind it.
