I'm reading the book Culture Shock! London: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette. It has all the practical information you need. I learned to keep to the left while walking.
Alot of these questions are actually brought up in the book Time Travellers Guide to Medieval England. According to that author, the OP's cynicism (as previously mentioned) is true-ish. If I remember correctly, his findings showed that childhood-young adulthood mortality was the issue. Basically, if you were going to die, you had like a 60% chance of it before you were 20. Once you crossed that mortal Rubicon, you would probably live to your 40's-50s.
