First off-how is your bed and mattress? It's what I'd tackle first. Make sure that your bed is comfortable and inviting. Pick a color that you're in love with and start with neutral sheets (gray, white, off white, lines, etc). Pick a nice comforter. Get a matching pillowcase, either one that matches the comforter or sheets. Center the bed on the wall, add a side table or two, maybe some lights.

I think the desk is fine, but I'd look into some shelves above it or beside it. Get yourself a nice desk set (pens, notebooks, filing, etc). Get a nice desk chair. Add a lamp to the desk.

Hang a new curtain or get blinds.

If you can paint the walls, go with neutral.

Get rid of boxes on top of things, find places for them. If you don't have a place, look into creating one.

Add art to the walls. Go as colorful or gray as you want. Pick art that you love.

Add a rug or two. It'll soften the space and make it cozier.

Add a throw blanket and a nice throw pillow. Maybe add a small bench in front of your bed (for storage and sitting when getting ready).

If I were you, I'd paint the yellow cabinet a dark gray. I'd go with white sheets (or light gray) and a dark gray comforter in a size larger than my bed. (If twin get a full or queen comforter). Something like this. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ef/6b/e7/ef6be72beb4df171fca9551b8c8490b5.png I'd add a couple of small white side tables. Bring in colors of brass as accents. I'd hang some curtains (white with blackout) and underneath I'd add some sheer curtains for light during the day. Hung wider than the window by a few inches to give the illusion of a wider window. Replace the chair with something modern but comfortable -maybe something like https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/907932/Realspace-Modern-Comfort-Winsley-Bonded-Leather/ I'd add a small bookshelf, a small bench with storage like https://www.amazon.com/Spatial-Order-Kaufmann-Modern-Storage/dp/B07F63HDP5?th=1 and probably hang a large art piece over the bed and a few on the walls.

Lots of great advice on here! Congrats on your new house! I fully support living with an S.O. to get a feel for your chemistry as housemates. Things I always found helpful that nobody else has mentioned yet:

  • ironing board and iron. We have one that goes over the back of the door.
  • A really decent vacuum cleaner, especially if you have carpeting. If you can swing it, get a new one that's highly rated. My first 8 years living in various places with S.O.s and roommates I went through 8-10 $40 walmart vacuum cleaners that barely did any good. When we bought our precious baby shark I was astonished as how well it does its damned job!
  • a dustbuster
  • Lamps. Overhead lighting can get really tiresome, and there's nothing that makes a space cozier than the right kind of lighting. We hit up goodwills and thrift stores and got some decent lamps for our space.
  • Somewhere for guests (and you) to store shoes and coats. Your cleaning will be easier if you take off your shoes at the door, and ask guests to do so as well. We have a cubby bin.
  • Don't overlook the merits of things that have multiple uses. Extra storage is no laughing matter. If you get a couch, consider a futon (so you have a place for guests to sleep).
  • Window treatments can go a VERY long way towards making a space feel complete and homey.
  • Splurge on your bedding. Seriously. Buy the nicest mattress, pillows, sheets and pillowcases you can afford. Getting a great night's sleep and looking forward to bed time is a great way to get settled in, and also make intimate snuggle time much nicer.

Enjoy your new home and space! Don't forget to get artwork or pictures on the walls ASAP so the space feels less overwhelming. Get organizational bins and boxes/tubs to put things that don't have a home yet, and keep your space less cluttered. If you cook, get a crockpot! Enjoy building your space together.

Very much appreciated.

Currently looking for something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Foremost-327901-Modular-2-Drawer-Storage/dp/B000O1EQKK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_196_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=31Hke5gK8-L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1QBZXQW8JC66EY0NXH60

Just an example... but of the correct dimensions, figure something like that would raise the unit up and save the wall and a big headache.

Have a local handyman give me a $90 quote to take care of it as well. He's my neighbor and well known in my neighborhood, so that could be worth it.

Really appreciate the response!

I see what you mean about the bench. Maybe against the short wall the length of the tiles area? If it cuts into the walkway too much, you might want to get a longer, narrower bench with shoe storage underneath.

This one would work, and you could probably put two beside each other to take up more of the space:

VASAGLE Shoe Bench, Shoe Rack with 2 Mesh Shelves, Shoe Storage Organizer for Entryway Hall, Metal, Industrial, Rustic Brown ULBS74X https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SJZNNRR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1BKQDb8JPKX9M

Or this:

WE Furniture AZ48PCSBGW Modern Farmhouse Bench Hidden Storage, 48 Inch, Gray Wash https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076288Y29/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_FEKQDbBPGNF8T

Depending on the hall tree, some might be sturdy enough to stand freely without the bench behind it, but I imagine you're right that one's from Amazon might not be safe. It might work if your had any other large furniture to butt it up against, like an entertainment center, but that's splitting hairs. Against the wall is really the best idea, even if it blocks the window slightly.

Good luck with your project!

  1. This, of course. While I am no dummy, it always helps to study and what better thing to help with the studying of the proper use than knowing how to properly fill it up? Study study study, they say!
  2. I need a place to set my drink, and I can't lie. That wouldn't be nice.
  3. If I have one of these, then nobody has an excuse to not come over because they all have places to hang.
  4. For this one, we're magical, yes? So of course we need to float.... or at least appear to. Having things within reach is always helpful, and not having to remember to release the spell is even better. Can't leave something magicked up all day, can we? So let's use a little muggle magic, sleight of hand in a way.
  5. Sidestep! Why not have a little humor? Or disguise? It's still a trunk, after all.... Also good for blowing raspberries at people.
Bonus: Well, I need something to hold it on, right? Right? Howe can I be expected to glide about the halls without grabbing like crazy? I've tried before, it's annoying.

    Mischief managed!

In addition to what u/bubblymimosa said:

  • As to the plants, Snake Plant and Pothos do very well as beginner plants indoors with low light. Get some organic soil like FoxFarm that has plenty of airy-ness to it. You've got lots of space on top by the windows for other plants that need more light like Croton or String of Pearls.
  • Add a standing coat rack like this one between the edge of the door when it's fully open and that first filing cabinet instead of the small hooks?
  • Get some thin pillow inserts and get some pillow cases with personality (that fits you, of course) to place on the backs of the chairs. Ikea has a good selection at good prices.
  • See if you'd be allowed to put up removable wallpaper. It's generally peel and stick and you'd just peel it again to get it off. Nothing terrible like wallpaper horror stories. Like at Spoonflower (the woven kind), or at Chasing Paper.

I'd pick a color scheme you like or a statement piece you adore and use the colors off of that in the rest of your decorating.
u/Metcarfre · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Three is definitely better; as you say, shit happens. I just don't want you rushing out to buy a bunch of crap because you have to. Crazy-good suits can be had for cheap if you wait for sales or eBay, so I'm just encouraging you to play the long game.

Hanging in either is fine. I've long wanted a valet stand or preferrably this exact chair for hanging clothes when I get home. In fact, on these hot summer days I'll often take off my pants (no suits for me, biz-cas) and hang the waistband over my fan to air them out for a while. Ghetto, yes, but effective. Just make sure the suit isn't squished into an over-crowded closet and air can move around.

Here is my item and here is my super crappy MS Paint cartoon I made you. Hope it made you laugh, have a great birthday!

u/Wasted-years · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I think that everyone could really use a coat rack. That one is pretty cute but they have all kinds! It's a useful and cool looking thing to stick in a corner, especially if you live somewhere cold.

u/milieu_of_mediocrity · 1 pointr/Kombucha

Hi. I'm planning on adding another 2 gallon vessel, so I'm looking for a stand to replace this wire rack. I have a feeling that it won't hold up to the additional weight.

The dimensions of this closet are 29" W x 20" L, and I'd like something 36" taller if possible. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Edit: I was thinking about something similar to this, only a bit taller.

u/jehssikkah · 2 pointsr/HomeDecorating

We used our built in desk as extra storage. I bought a bamboo shoe rack from amazon (it looks like a small shelf) that fit absolutely perfectly under neath the desk, and stored extra kitchen appliances. Link of example. The top of the desk had my toaster oven and knife block. My setup was a little different than yours though; our built in desk was at one end of the kitchen, so kitchen appliance storage didn’t look out of place.

Maybe you can use it for extra storage?

A picture of the front of your house would help.

I'm a mail carrier. So I'm the guy leaving your packages. Some of us are nicer than others. Some of us are, much, more time pressed than others. But if you make things easy for us, and leave a sign telling us what you want us to do, most of the time we'll try to accommodate you.

Where I'll leave things depends on the house. In areas where I think things are more likely to be stolen I'll try to leave it less visible. But that's not always an option. I also try not to leave things where they'll get rained on. Also not always an option. Small packages will go in the mailbox, next smaller between the doors. Also not always an option. If you have an enclosed porch, and the door's not locked, I'll put them inside. I'll use the side door in some cases. If you want them out of sight and don't have an enclosed porch, do you have a place to put something like this? Leave a note on the door to please place packages in the bench.

Looks like I got it on amazon. Pretty good deal now that I look back on it Southern Enterprises Entryway Bench and Storage Rack - 72.5" Tall w/Black Finish - 12 Hook Design https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001QOGLDE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ibyuDbZ3V9EQK

u/that_thing_you_do · 2 pointsr/shutupandtakemymoney

I saw this but went with this one instead. I wanted a coffee table to eat off of, and be able to have guests sit on. Admittedly though I don't flip it to the hard side enough and often just eat off the cushion side anyway.
But still like it... can put my feet up on it comfortably when on the couch, too.

Sucks in dust like crazy on the floor.

I put my tower on a pedestal and I went from cleaning it ones every two months to twice a year.

Made a huge difference.

I tipped an old used speaker box on its side as a pedestal.

I also used a shoe rack...

You can get something like this to put your case on.

I might get one because my desk just isn't big enough, and my cat will probavly knock it over.
