I visited Paris two years ago and since hearing how hip-hop was done over the ocean, I've all but given up on American hip-hop.

I personally am particular to Marseille groups. IAM is an outstanding group. Saison 5, their latest album, is absolutely fantastic. Fonky Family and 3ème Oeil are also outstanding.

Sniper and MC Solaar are also fantastic.

I will say, while Sinik, Booba, Rohff are more of the same 'thug rap', it sounds a lot better than anything produced in the last five years in the U.S. ("Mauvais garçon", "le duc", "TDSI" come to mind).

|about artist|Oceansize were a British band who combined heavy rock with several progressive/experimental elements. They formed in 1998, and funded themselves through various jobs including writing music for arcade games and building/repairing helicopters. At the start of 2001 they were named 'Best Unsigned Band in Manchester' by the Manchester Evening News. The A Very Still Movement EP was released that August, and the band enjoyed support slots with the likes of Elbow, Lift to Experience, and The Cooper Temple Clause and in March 2002 were asked to open the BPI stage at the SxSW festival in Austin... I can't narrow down the songs and movies to 5 but I think I can take a stab at the albums. The links go to Amazon. In no particular order...

  1. Kind of Blue by Miles Davis - It works in every situation. It makes me feel like I am out in nature. Just that feeling of being able to breath deeply and you think, "this is where I am supposed to be."

  2. Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd - It's so timeless. If this album came out today it would be hailed as innovative and fresh.

  3. In On The Kill Taker by Fugazi - The energy. The passion. The emotion. When I need to get pumped up, this album does it for me. I can hear the first notes of Facet Squared just typing this.

  4. A Fistful of Film Music by Ennio Morricone - My favorite film composer. This anthology is awesome from top to bottom and I could listen to it all day.

  5. Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan - I was introduced to Bob Dylan way later than I wish I was so I feel like I am making up for lost time when I listen to him. No one makes nonsensical lyrics make so much sense like Dylan.

I could survive on a desert island with these 5 albums and never want for music. I might want a power supply though.

It really is a great piece of music, the entire soundtrack is well worth buying. If you do get it try and nab the italian release by GDM. It has great sound quality unlike the Capitol Records release I have (I think they pulled the music straight from the LP lol). There's also great linear notes and much better artwork in the GDM edition.

A band I really wish I'd seen? The Blue Nile. Only put out, like, 4 albums in 25 years. Unbelievably smooth, jazzy, heartfelt, and outstanding.

Very different sound from Okkervil River of course.

But 25 years later I've gotta say that A Walk Across the Rooftops is one of the greatest albums ever released. By anyone.

And Hats is right up there with it.

I hope you are enjoying your time in Hawaii! I have been guiltily singing along with is Let It Go from Frozen! :)

If I win I would like Raining Up by the Celtic Women.

Thanks for the contest!

Love Francoise Hardy! You can get TCG from amazon for cheap:

Tous Les Garcons Et Les Filles https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N07JDPL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QI9pDbW9M2CKA

Also recommend Sylvie Vartan, France Gall, Jacqueline Taeib, and Gillian Hills for some more sweet Ye Ye.

Well, looks like both of you learned something today! Often times the vinyl + download is only a couple dollars more than the download only. For example the MP3 download is $10.49, and the vinyl is only $12.99 + free digital download.

Another example with even less of a price difference

Sometimes (rarely) it actually works out to be less to buy the vinyl which comes with the digital download anyway.

  1. Mother Simpson, though every episode from Season Seven is high up there.

  2. Lionel Hutz, because his lack of intelligence and flawed view of law always makes me laugh.

  3. [Link!]

  4. If you need me, I'll be in the refrigerator.
