A few things to note for any PC you're going to be developing with:

In terms of the OS, Windows will do everything you need unless you're doing mobile app development. Otherwise any PC will be a good idea:

Some things to consider for a laptop:

  • First off, Windows 10 is hungry for I/O. Get a laptop with a solid state drive. It's a godsend, since they have very little latency and they can keep up with all the things Windows 10 does in the background. The other benefit is booting & launching programs will take less time (nearly instantly for some). The other thing is if you end up using Intellij IDEA (Java ide, very bloated) for any of your first year courses, you'll be happy with one
    • If you can't get an SSD because of the cost / not enough storage, get a laptop with a 7200 rpm hard drive NOT a 5400rpm one. Same reason: access times. 5400 rpm hard drives are extremely sluggish on windows 10.
    • For many of your COMP classes, they will give you a Virtual machine to develop inside. These VM's tend to be hungry for I/O, but it's not as bad as windows since they're Linux distros.
    • If you're tech savvy & want to save some money: if there's a laptop that you found that's a good deal, but does not have a SSD, go for it. If you have all the tools you can just buy a SSD afterwards (it costs less this way) and install it yourself, this does imply you'll have to reinstall windows too. Bonus: You can buy a little hard drive enclosure and use it with your old hard drive for backups, or other stuff.
  • Besides that, battery life is nice. Take this into account if you have long lectures / don't want to always be beside an outlet.

Keep in mind that besides that you'll probably want something durable. Apple machines tend to be built well. Enough said. But for the PC realm I'd take a look at the following product lines:

  1. Lenovo Thinkpad. Don't buy a cheap one, i.e "IdeaPad". Specifically, the thinkpad T series, X series, and the W series (older, but powerful). They can be easily modified to have an SSD (many new ones have a M.2 slot w/SSD and a 2.5" bay). The business made ones are built like tanks, and can be dropped several times without skipping a beat.
  2. Asus Zenbook. These are attractive laptops since most are thin and portable, boast a good battery life, and have SSDs.
  3. Dell XPS. They're crafted beautifully, and they're all you'd really need. Pricey, though.

Otherwise any other "flagship" laptop is good, and look around to see about any deals. Also I named particularly mainstream laptops that can have powerful processors & fast storage, but if you planned on a gaming laptop then naturally look into other lineups that have better cooling + more powerful graphics.

I went with the Libre Renegade since it was on Amazon and had prime shipping but it looks like Amazon only has the
4GB for $80 so it would be pointless to pay that much when the NanoPi M4 is $65

Looks like you can still get the 1GB version ($35) and the heatsink($4) from Love our PI but anything above that would be a waste of $ the main benefit is a solid OMV 4 build and the fact you can use any Rasp Pi case.

Here's the case I bought for $10.

I had to mod it to fit but I was able to easily mount a 40mm Noctua fan to it
So you're looking at around $50 not counting micro SD.

Then I have a 4bay Mediasonic Probox with 4x8TB shucked WD My Books(WD80EZAZ) and Easy Stores(WD80EMAZ). The 4 i purchased were all basically the same white drives which are the same thing as the 8TB reds.

Currently getting 100-110mbs and SMART actually works perfectly.

So total cost is gonna set you back $150 for everything except hard drives.

With that said, I personally would still go the same route since I know its reliable and all the kinks are ironed out.
The RK3399 boards are coming out every day so I would probably get the NanoPi M4 since it has OMV ready to go.

I agree about tape being cheap, but it's not much cheaper than a modern external USB HDD nowadays. Now if you have a library (old dell TL2000 or 132T's) it's pretty fun to script the library control stuff.

I setup a SSH RSYNC process before i used CRASHPLAN to an old LINUX box at my dad's house. Provided remote replication that was active all the time. that was a fun project for me. Maybe something similar could be your next adventure. Rasperry Pi3's are plenty beefy to serve as a LINUX NAS/RSYNC destination. And they are super-cheap.

Data protection is a thankless skill/profession, i'll tell you. I'm happy to see someone taking an interest. My field of expertise is a lonely one. :) Good Luck!

> 120 GB is nothing and will be filled by like 4 games. Most people have 500 GB or 1TB consoles. At least be intellectually honest.

$14.99

Perfect, they can put their HDD’s into an enclosure and save all their stuff, and run MHW from the SSD. Capcom can’t optimize the game to run as fast as it does on an SSD on an HDD. So if you really care about the load times, you should buy an SSD. That’s what I did at least and 120GB is way more than you need. Also if you scroll through the storage sizes theres a 480GB $150 CAD which is still no where close to $500 so at least do some research before you throw out sensationalist numbers to try and make your case. Idk why you would buy a 1TB SSD it’s a huge waste of money, especially the Samsung 850 Evo, unless you’re building a PC. But even my gaming PC with a 1070 uses a 250GB SSD to run the OS and a select few games and a 1TB HDD for everything else.

> Which is the logical and obvious endgame as developed by Capcom. Everything else you described is possible during the story phase of the game, which falls outside of the bounds you set. In regards to the rest of your post, World is a huge step down in terms of content compared to past games. Doesn't matter what other series offer because this is not from those companies or franchises.

How is that the logical end game? There are still T2 investigations for Decorations and if you want to make new weapons/armour they require you to go back and slay/capture all kinds of monsters from Low Rank to High Rank. There’s also unlocking the event armour and weapons, completing the Canteen ingredients and then just enjoying fighting monsters.

Not sure why some people absolutely need game developers to spoon feed them content and tell them how to play the game. What happened to just sitting down and having fun messing around with a videogame? Everyone needs more, more, more. Just because you don’t like to hunt endemic life or just sit there and fish doesn’t mean the end game lacks content. It means you just don’t like the game. You can always play another game. Cheers.

I don’t have an easy answer for you. I have been looking for an 8TB drive for some time now myself, and have spent far too much time comparing options. I would love to hear everyone’s opinion!

I also haven’t looked that much at encryption, hopefully someone here knows more about that part.

I have a couple of Western Digital My Passport drives that I use for movies and such. I would recommend buying one exclusively for Time Machine and using that to back up. Then buy one for your other random stuff. Time Machine doesn't like sharing drives, although you can if you partition it. But the drives are so inexpensive that it's easier to just buy one exclusive drive for it. Mine are 2TB and cost around $80-90:

WD 2TB Black My Passport for Mac Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBCGL0020BSL-NESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WJOVCOS/

WD 2TB Black My Passport for Mac Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBP6A0020BBK-WESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LQQH8E2/

Those are preformatted for macOS. You can buy the regular one too, but at least for Time Machine you would want to reformat it if you did that. If you are sharing between a Mac and PC, you would want the non Mac version:

WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D0L5BH8/

WD 2TB Black USB 3.0 My Passport Portable External Hard Drive (WDBYFT0020BBK-WESN) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LQQHF2W/

You will also need USB-C to USB Micro-B adapters for them. I have these and they work great:

u/yee245 · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

I'd still say my point remains. I could go over to Target right now and pick up a 4TB external for $105, so perhaps slightly higher than that $90 sale, but $100 is not uncommon. 5TB drives seem to have mostly been phased out (I believe WD discontinued it from their lineup), so you'd have to "settle" for $120 for a 5TB Seagate right now from Amazon. Or, from Amazon, $180 for 8TB, so the same price as that particular external that most people want to just shuck, or I might have to spend an extra $4 if I wanted it today from Best Buy (though it's only in stock in store at one store local to me). We may be in that just-before-Memorial-Day-sales period, so I didn't see the greatest pricing. What were everyday prices like back in 2010? $20/TB?

Your example isn't any better at demonstrating the price "trend." You're picking a relatively premium internal drive and trying to compare it to today's pricing. Also, was that $85 a typical price, or did you grab it during a sale? Sales come and go. WD Blacks don't really go on sale as much, and at the moment, they're up a bit. I paid $200 back in mid 2014 for a 4TB WD black, $175 in mid 2015, and $165 in early 2016. Just because that drive is $200-210 right now doesn't mean typical or average drive pricing hasn't come down. Also, it's been the case as long as I can remember that drives at the lower end of the capacity spectrum are usually going to be more expensive per capacity than higher capacities. At the moment, I'd consider 2TB at the lower end of the spectrum nowadays, but it would have been closer to the higher end 7 years ago.

It seems this WD black 1TB was $100 back in 2010 (according to a couple reviews, and there's a pcper review from Feb 2010 mentioning it was around $100). The more current version is only $73.

u/Deadred5 · 2 pointsr/xboxone

Definitely the best deal here. One thing you definitely need to understand is that this is only going to be a 500GB system which really isn't enough space for most xbox one players. If you're only going to play halo on it, then that is perfect for you. If you know you're going to buy more games, then you need to start looking at external hard drives (EHD) that will work with your xbox. I got a 4TB WD My Book External Hard Drive which has worked really well with my xbox one and I got it on amazon for $98 https://www.amazon.com/Book-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN/dp/B00E3RH61W/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1473731188&sr=8-6&keywords=4tb+external+hard+drive+usb+3.0 (It was cheaper for some reason. Right place right time I guess) so I would just look around for a deal on something like that. You can research with a google search on what EHDs work with Xbox one if you have a preferred brand in mind. Up to you. That's just my two cents though. I started playing Halo: Combat Evolved when I was 10 with my older brother. I'll never forget those years and that's why I'll be an Xbox customer for life. Hope you and your son enjoy it!

u/Nemesis14 · 7 pointsr/gadgets

I can't find any info on this on Western Digital's website. Is there a place that lists the OEM drive inside of different external enclosures? I realize that a manufacturer like Western Digital might put different OEM drives (Hitachi/WD) into the same enclosure as long as the specs are the same. But still, it would be nice to have somewhere to check to see what you're getting inside that plastic.

Edit: finally found a phrase that gave me what I wanted on Google. "what drive is inside wd my book" was it.

>We can only guarantee drive capacity. We cannot guarantee a particular internal hard drive model, data interface, rotational speed, or cache size in the external hard drive enclosure.

Source from WD's website

That's crazy to me. That means that the $130 4TB WD My book might have a $128 5400 RPM Drive or potentially a $200 7200 RPM Drive.

They only guarantee capacity? That's crazy to me. I assume they do this so that when they buy another manufacturer's stuff like they did with Hitachi, they can get rid of old stock without having to worry about matching specs. That's honestly great news as long as they're selling the External at about the same price as their cheapest OEM drive. Some lucky guy is getting free random upgrades.

u/kaikkeus · 1 pointr/DataHoarder

Tl;dr: do whatever, actually.

I think both can be ok, but there's no guarantee. In the reviews (go down the page, click "See all [amount] customer reviews and [amount] customer ratings, then on the reviews pages, filter by "all formats" -> "show only reviews for capacity 2TB"), both drives have been said to work with PS4, for example. So it will probably work anyway. But while the read speeds are probably enough, for example one review stated "It's fairly slow taking near 4 hours to backup 400gb", i.e. about 30 MB/s. It's probably the same for both drives. And 2TB really might not be enough. I would perhaps go with this https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB4000100/dp/B00TKFEE8K/ (2TB more space, and greater speed with $20 added) I have already two of those, they look beautiful, I think... they're actually black, and like diamonds. However, it's rather big and supposed to be in an upwards position (but it doesn't matter so much). And also, perhaps 2TB is just enough! So, that's just me, thinking 2TB is terribly little for hoarding. Anyway, I had hard time finding any good information on Wii U games, it seemed like the average size could be something like 300MB in some place, but 5Gb in some place... but I suppose you know what you need? Anyway, those drives are quite cute, and perhaps they will be even cheaper after a few years (thus, the 2TB portable ext. HDD might be the most cost-efficient solution actually, besides being cuter). So maybe you should actually go with one of those you linked. They seem to be quite similar. Note that no drive is reliable, per se. But if the games are actually like 300MB each, even a 500GB SSD for the same price $60 (although the portable ones are pricier, and that would anyway be extra cheap deal) would enough probably, perhaps 1700 games would be enough...?

u/Exaskryz · -2 pointsr/nintendo

>I mean... my landlord will kick me out using police reinforcement if I don't pay my bills, so...

That is a terrible analogy. Your landlord can make money by renting to someone else. This isn't the same with cloud storage -- at least, a company like Nintendo should not be running out of space and selling to the highest bidder.

Consumer grade hardware is $100 for a 4 TB drive. Industrial grade, we'll go with $1000. Have 49 backups for all I care. $50,000 in hardware expenses. That is covered from the sale of 1,250 games. Games. One thousand, two hundred fifty games.

>You then disappear without ever talking to them for several years without warning or paying them and then coming back expecting them to not have thrown it out "because you were friends ten years ago."

Another terrible analogy. Digital and physical world don't parallel very well.

Somehow Google is just fine holding onto my 10 year old gmail account that I log into once every four years. Why not Nintendo?

Edit: Have some copypasta from over 3 years ago. The prices have gotten even cheaper:

Edit 2: Haha, this copypasta doesn't even use the right math. That 7 million accounts should be 10 million in 7 TB (and same to small denominations). So it's even more of a ripoff than I erroneously calculated.

Edit 3: Revised the math.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nintendo/comments/3dxtvv/whats_your_most_unpopular_opinion_about_nintendo/ctabc0v

The PokeBank (not sure if this is more Game Freak or more Nintendo) is a huge rip off. It is 100,000% more expensive than any cloud storage software and there is absolutely no reason except millions of dollars in pure profit to make it an annual fee instead of a one-time purchase. The storage space any individual account will ever take up is <700 kilobytes. For the record, you could put 10 accounts on 7 MB, 7000 10000 accounts on 7 GB, and 7 10 million accounts on 7 TB. And looking on Amazon: 4 TB Hard Drive for $110 http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB4000100/dp/B00TKFEE8K/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1437436355&sr=1-3&keywords=terabyte+harddrive&refinements=p_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3A7817230011

So, they can literally pay <$250 worth of storage space for 7 10 million subscriptions ($5/year -- $35 $50 million/year). OK, let's have some redundancy in place though! Got to have backups! Let's have 3 backups, so we're looking at spending $1000 out of $35 $50 million.

But, oh you say, electricity and internet costs for running these 24/7? This I don't have nice pricing on, but I cannot imagine it goes to more than $1 million/year. Reddit uses the Reddit Gold feature to pay for server costs. $4 of gold supposedly pays for 231.26 minutes of server time -- That's ~4 hours. Do we need more than 5 servers for Bank? Eh, sure, we'll say 50 servers because lumping the numbers in Nintendo/Game Freak's favor is always good to making this argument.

So, it costs about $25/day (24 hours/~4 hours = 6; 6 * $4 = $24) per server. It'll be $1250/day with 50 servers. 365 days to a year: $456,250 per year in server costs.

Now, of course, you pay the one guy who does daily diagnostics on these servers and maintenances a great salary because this is a huge money making operation. Let's give him another $500,000/year.

So, our annual expenses are almost $1,000,000/year. Let's pay the difference to the person who coded Bank and Transporter in a week's time (I'd say this is an accurate estimate for how rudimentary and shoddy both softwares are, including the back-end). And at just 7 10 million customers, they make $35,000,000 50,000,000/year.

Do they really need to be making 3400% 4900% profit on this?

u/kabbage123 · 1 pointr/videography

By all means, invest in a NAS system like Synology. This is an expense that merits the cost.

I personally own one like this one filled with 8 x 4TB WD RED drives with two disk redundancy, so if two disks fail on me I should be fine.

Every three months, I back up the entire 20 TB on mulitple 8TB WD books drives like these for offline cold storage, just in case my office burns down. All links in this post are referral links.

Data is NOT something to go cheap on. It has other uses, too. I use it for a home security system, printer server, and a PLEX server as well.

EDIT: This 8tb WD EasyStore external drive is a better buy than what I originally linked above. Usually they ship with an 8tb RED NAS drive inside which is worth more than the drive themselves.

u/yanokwa · 2 pointsr/digitalnomad

I have a Mac, work in disconnected environments, generate a few gigs of new data every week, and have been obsessed with backups for as long as I can remember.

My goal is automated incremental backups of my entire machine with proven software. I've settled on Crashplan, SuperDuper, and two WD portable drives.

Crashplan backs up my home folder to the cloud when there is a connection and it also backs up to Drive 1 every fifteen minutes or so. I then use SuperDuper for nightly images of my entire machine to Drive 2.

Crashplan keeps every single change and it's great to recover from software bugs and accidental deletes. SuperDuper's nightly images are great for fast rollback and to mount my drive on pretty much any Mac.

I've been a nomad for about two years and this system has worked well for me. It keeps your data lived in three places locally (laptop, two drives) and uses the cloud as the fourth location.

If you have a good connection, you can keep the laptop and drives in the same place. If you don't have a good connection, keep the laptop and drives separated.

The big gap in this system is in restoring the OS and apps. Your OS can only be restored with a recovery partition on your Mac and your apps from SuperDuper drive. If either of those are gone, you are going to be in for a rough time.

Hope this helps.

Well you don't have to go with a server-style case, it's just what I default to thinking of. The one you linked to only holds 8 drives, though they are hot-swap which I admit is a very convenient feature.

The Cooler Master Cosmos II holds 11 drives and looks like a normal PC case. It also has three 5.25" bays which means you can shove a cheap 5-in-3 drive cage in there to be able to use all 16 ports on the LSI 9201-16e. Don't forget to buy a fan for it though.

You could also go for a case that has all 5.25" bays in the front like the Antec Nine Hundred, then use those 5-in-3s for 15 total drives. If you really want hot-swap though it would be expensive. With a quick search the cheapest 5-in-3 hot-swap bays I could find are the NORCO SS-500s.

As far as a PSU you goes, you don't need much since it will only be powering HDDs and fans, no CPU or anything like that. It can be a low power one, 500 watts is probably more than you'll need. Just make sure make sure it has a single rail for the 12v and 5v power and is from a reputable brand. I like the EVGA Supernova, that would easily run 16 drives.

EDIT: WD 10TB Elements drives on sale for $160 until midnight Pacific time. This is an even better deal than the 8 TB ones for $130 the other day. You should definitely snatch up as many as you were planning to get.

u/jrt364 · 2 pointsr/PS4Deals

No. I don't like Seagates because I personally think they're unreliable, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Just an example: Seagate makes an "official" external drive for the Xbox One, and if you look up reviews on that on Amazon, you'll see that a large portion of buyers complained that it randomly stopped working after 1-3 months: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Game-Drive-External-Portable/product-reviews/B01065S79E

That is just one example, but I have had a seagate drive for 2 years and it died on me randomly too.

I'm sure every external drive has its pros and cons, though, and I'm sure some drives that I like may not work out for others, but that's just my 2 cents. I've had a different WD external drive for my PS4 for over a year, and it's been working great. I have this one if you're wondering. I just bought another WD for my new Xbox One X, too.

u/el_boricua00 · 1 pointr/gaming

I have a ps4 and faced with the same dilemma. From my research, I've seen that Seagate is highly unreliable. That pushed me to look into western digital. They appear to be much more reliable but are also somewhat more expensive.

WD 8TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBBGB0080HBK-NESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LQQHLGC/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_Nf8RybJB1HCC7

This is the one I'm looking to get, once the ps4 update allowing external hard drives is released. It has the best ratings, tons of space, and a great value.

u/Hugh_Jankles · 1 pointr/AlternativeAmazonVGF

Well, this HD has a nicer look to compliment a XBOS. The White with the black Xbox Stamp.

> a free one-month Xbox Game Pass subscription for the 2TB unit, and a two-month free subscription for the 4TB unit. That’s a $10 and $20 savings, respectively.

So with the $10 towards the Xbox Game Pass for the 2TB unit, which is why you would be buying this anyhow, makes this 2TB unit $80. Just $5 more than the Standard WD 2TB

If you are just in the market for a HD & aren't interested in the Xbox Game Pass then this makes no sense to get unless you just want a "Xbox" branded external.

For what it's worth, the cheapest 2TB External Hard Drives on Amazon.Com are Seagate at $72.

u/zxseyum · 2 pointsr/DataHoarder

Easystores have a WD Red (sometimes white label which is a red drive with some quirks) NAS drive which is popular for 24/7 usage. These have either an archive drive or a barracuda drive. Archive drives are bad for frequent writes, but are good for backing up/storing once and reading many times as they use shingled magnetic recording. The Barracuda is a desktop drive, which is kind of the middle ground. If you are going to use this one as an external drive, it has a two port usb 3.0 hub in the front that the Easystore does not. Another alternative is to buy the WD Mybook which is guaranteed to have a WD Red and has a 3-year warranty. Currently @ 184.99.

yeah, it's actually pretty easy just plug and play for the most part, pretty simple. I have a 5TB Seagate drive I got a few years ago for $130 on sale and I've already filled it to 50% since I buy a lot of games and download them all and never uninstall them.

This is the drive I got - Seagate 5TB USB 3.0 Back-up drive It's as fast or faster than the standard Xbox One HDD in pretty much every game I've tested. However, I'm fairly sure there are better options for you and your storage needs.

u/Leroin · 1 pointr/datarecovery

Sounds like a good idea, thank you for your advice. I don't think this HDD is in a separate housing, it's this one which seems to be pretty solidly sealed off. Will try to find a guide to opening it up though because perhaps it's just an unusual form-factor.

I've got a feeling that there's a loose connection somewhere in it TBH. If it was a broken head or something like that, it would be corrupting data - but I think (see:assume) that if it was a loose connection then it would make sense that it's got a working/not-working fluctuation.

And yes, I'd managed to look after it for a good few years before he dropped a cricket ball on it. He laughed it off, but I don't think he realised he'd just knocked the life out of 2tb and 4+ years of data.

Edit: I just found this video and it looks like this might work. I don't have a SATA enclosure, but hopefully this indicates that there's some potential!

Amazon has been selling 10TB WD Elements drives for $179.99 lately. Not sure how much that will go down on black Friday.

That same link has a variety of sizes to choose from. The 8TB drives have been 124.99 for over a month. The only difference I can tell is that the WD Elements (Amazon's 'exclusive') have 2 years warranty instead of 3 years of the EasyStore (Best Buy's 'exclusive').

I have one of the 8TB models, it has an WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0 in it. It was super easy to open, didn't even need to use an old credit card like I do for the Easystores. I just laid it flat, back facing me and pulled on the ends and pushed forward with my thumbs on the flat part.

Looking at this.... You'll be immensely happier just buying a 3-4TB external and adopting it to the machine. The 100$ you save by going the 16gig shield route... you can put to buying a drive like this and be much better off. Side note... The shield unit can natively emulate everything up to about the dreamcast era of games. Most dreamcast play okay... some gamecube play as well, but most don't. XBOX and PS2 don't play at all that I have found.

You can do everything up to n64/ps1/saturn(no nintendo ds since you can't emulate touch on the console) era in about 1.82 TB[according to my library] including mame and CHDs. I don't know if the MAME CHD games play well on the shield natively, I haven't tested them.

But I do know that USB based joysticks like the X-arcade sticks work(don't know about the trackball).

Edit: Also, transferring large amounts of files is terrible on the shield. There aren't any real good file explorers for the shield. So it's much easier to just unplug a USB drive and bring it over to the computer and put the files on yourself than wait forever for a network transfer over ES file Explorer.

I have a pretty old (nearing on 10 years?) Seagate that's 1T and awesome. It's not slow if I play games directly from it plugged in. Here's the newer model of it:

I also have a slimmer one that's exclusively for backing up my computer and keeping important files portable that is pretty great too. Again, this is the newer model:

Yay thanks for the tech stuff contest :D

For me, I'd greatly appreciate a Toshiba Canvio Basics 1TB Portable Hard Drive :D It has a very practical use for me. Recently, I've gotten back to studying and experimenting with game development. Since my focus is on 3D world, that means I also have to create a lot of 3D objects and even 2D textures and maps for my characters and items. The assets I create usually consume gigabytes worth of space on my current drive because there's so many of them! I've also used up my other 1TB external drive because I've been saving all my educational material and experiments there. Recently, I had to delete older training material from my old 1TB external drive just so I could save the new ones I'm learning. With a new extra 1TB drive, I wouldn't have to worry about deleting previous and current work and learning materials from my computer and external drive and I'll be able to focus more on quality instead of trying to compress everything into lower quality versions.

Thanks in advance :D

Well you could carry a RaspberryPi DIY solution but I’m kinda worried about the transfer speed (it will take some time to be backed up).

For SD cards I use this WD My Passport Wireless Pro [https://www.amazon.com/Passport-Wireless-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B01F5LVTO4] but I haven’t seen anything like that for Hard drives other than the docking solution that was recommended below.

I would still do a DIY solution with an 8TB HDD from WD, the ones rated for server usage.

I also found it on Amazon for the exact same price. Checking the price history makes it seem they are trying to compete with this deal:

It's 2018, soon to be 2019...people should know the default 500gb isn't enough anymore. I've had an external 4TB for years. Works great (and word on the street is it improves load times as well?). Here's the one I've used with my PS4 with great success if anyone is interested.

u/A_Talking_Shoe · 1 pointr/xboxone

There have been lots of suggestions.

This is the one I have:

WD 4TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E3RH61W/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_cO4mybVXPFFPB

4 terabytes total (maybe closer to like 3.8 of usable space). I have 78 games of varying quality and size saved on it and I've only used 30% of the space. If you get Xbox Live, you get two free games a month and those add up the Gigs fast. I usually buy and download the free games onto the hard drive. I can access them seamlessly from the "My Games and Apps" tab and save things to it without any extra steps.

I think I got it on sale for under $100 last year but the current price ($130) is still great for the quality and size.

u/FoN925 · 2 pointsr/PS4

Considering how quick and easy it is to upgrade the PS4s internal HDD, I'd honestly go ahead and start looking into it ASAP. I wouldn't imagine that constantly reformatting your HDD is terribly good for it, and if anything, may end up shortening it's life.

This guide is the best I've found, and I've personally used it every time I've replaced a PS4 HDD (a total of four PS4s now).

And this is the hard drive I used to upgrade my own PS4. I've been using it for 2 years and have never had a single problem with it, even after multiple power outages.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I have two actually, a 7200 rpm 2 TB Touro that they no longer make but I loved:

I love the gamedrive.

I'm Canadian. Trick is you buy the drives when there are good deals. I don't see any right now, but $400 is a bit high for 10 TB even in Canada. This 10 TB drive is CAD$300 or $315 after taxes on the Canadian Amazon store. This 8 TB drive is only CAD$184 on Amazon Canada, meaning you could get 16 GB for $368+tax.

Is the NAS really worth it for the premium price in storage? Guess it matters how much you care about redundancy. I personally don't because I can just re-download stuff fairly quickly if anything happened (~1.5 days for 16 TB and 1 Gbps connection) and nothing in my hard drive is that sensitive. Of course you might have other circumstances that make the premium price worth it.

u/blaize9 · 1 pointr/DataHoarder

Get this external storage instead, because seagate has higher failure rates as proven in the past.

Idealy you would want an Internal HDD, but for some reason your friend has everything on USB.

If you would like to use internal HDDs (and get wayyyy faster transfer speeds) but have no space left you can buy this or this or any other one you would like and then you just plug it into an eSATA port or USB. If you have an internal SATA available you can buy this and have a nice place to plug it in, or just buy long eSATA to SATA cable and shove it through a slot.

Note: To protect your data you need to put more money into it, currently you have 0 data protection.

Pretty sure it's a maximum of 8Tb. I have a 4Tb one as the next size up needed its own dedicated power supply, this one runs off just off the power supplied by the port.

This is what I use (as recommended by Eurogamer), I have it about a year and it's worked perfectly.

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FireCuda-Gaming-Solid-Hybrid/dp/B01IEKG2HM

If you decide to use external HDD, the capacities range anywhere from 1TB--8TB. However, be aware that for 8TB you need to have a separate power cable. 4TB is the sweet spot with reasonable capacity and a single cable:

I bought this one in 2015, and its cheaper today than back then
Just saw it is only 70 right now, that's great, I'd jump on it.

Can honestly say it is great. No issues, games actually load faster than the internal drive, and it is plenty of space for me, I download a few games, get about half the free games for gold, and download games on black friday. Have about 50 to 60 games, and used about a 3rd of the space thus far.

u/mrnose20 · 1 pointr/xboxone

Based on what you've said there are a lot of good ideas that I've seen (I'm not reading all 200+ comments) but here are my thoughts while trying to stay in your budget.

  1. System, Forza Horizon 3, 12 months gold ~ $400

  2. 3 extra controlers ~ $135

  3. Game Pass, EA Access ~ $150/year

  4. 8TB Seagate Drive Hub External HDD ~ $200

This leaves you about $115 (depending on sales tax) in your budget for other games like Rocket League or Beach Buggy Racing or any game that you desire.

And before I get trashed about the External HDD I chose that because with the Vault and Games Pass downloading games directly to your system, you will want a lot of storage so you are not constantly uninstalling and reinstalling games and the system can support up to 2 of those drives at once.
u/mrkylematz · 5 pointsr/macsetups

I know it’s nothing special, but this is my macsetup! I work primarily on video editing projects, some Photoshopping, with some Wordpress website building sprinkled in there. But this setup is used mostly for generic browsing, YouTube/Netflix, and Plex server hosting.

So this is my setup that I’ve built over the course of 4 years.

u/opthrift · 2 pointsr/mac

It really comes down to the read/write speed requirements she'll have. With a 256GB SSD and some file management, you could keep your working files on the SSD for max IO speed, and move archived projects onto an external drive that runs on something like USB 3.0. SSDs aren't totally necessary for anything but the most bandwidth-intensive jobs like editing 4K video. For graphic design work, file sizes are reasonable and you don't need to constantly be reading tons of data, so a regular external HDD should be fine.

We use this Seagate 5TB drive that comes well recommended by Wirecutter for Time Machine backups, and it'd also work well for storing data for your wife.

u/troggers · 1 pointr/redditblack

Dang, you just missed out on some good external HDD deals. I picked up this 4TB Western Digital MyBook for $100. If you don't care about the space factor, or having to have a separate power connection, I think the MyBook's will probably be your best bet as far as $/TB.

In general, I personally think the brands are a wash. There will be complaints about certain manufacturers from everyone, but in general, you're looking for best price per TB. I'll keep my eye out and send you links if I find any good deals in the next few weeks.

u/InF1uxx · 1 pointr/xboxone

I have used this drive for a while now without issues, it is only a 5400RPM drive but the performance gains from a 7200RPM drive is minimal. The main reason why I got this drive is that the matte plastic matches the plastic around the xbox disk drive and also the vents if you like making things match. A word of warning though you will need to reformat the drive through a PC (Windows / Mac / Linux) before it will work on the Xbox One, if you go with it just let me know what type of computer you have and I can give you some help in doing so it will only take 5mins and not cost a dime.

If you want cheep, Toshiba is the brand that I would say has a good blend of quality for the price.

Don't worry much about brands and such though, everyone will get a lemon now and then regardless of drive, but thats why we have warranties; also most of the drives are sourced from the same factories as the other guy.

So, regarding this hard drive:

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Basics-Portable-Drive/dp/B00N2S6ZUQ/

It's the only reasonably priced 1TB one that I can find. I see that it doesn't have its own AC power source, which is fine as my power strip by the TV is near full as it stands. However, I've seen that people have issues with HDDs such as these because the drive can't pull enough power from the Wii U. Does a Y-cable completely mitigate this issue, and if so is there any certain one that people recommend with it? Sorry about all the questions, just trying to get the best bang for my buck here. Everyone commenting has been very helpful. However, the wiki doesn't seem to be all-inclusive and the hard drives it links to are currently more expensive than I can justify.

u/tonydaazntiger319 · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

Honestly, I think it's better to get into the habit of backing things up onto physical drives. Hard drives are extremely cheap nowadays ( this 3TB Seagate is only $79). It's a good practice, and you're not going to always have reliable internet when you're on set to use the cloud. I personally have two 4TB hard drives as safety nets in addition to my primary 4TB hard drive where footage is uploaded. It shouldn't be that much of a hassle if you just name your file folders accurately and keep everything neatly compartmentalized.

I picked up a WD my passport ultra 2 TB but I decided I wanted more space, so I bought a seagate backup plus slim 2TB since it was slimmer. It also worked out for the bracket I used to hold them in. Kingwin 2 bay PCI-E HDD Frame

I also picked up some cables: Right Angle USB for the RPi, Right angle usb 3.0 cables for the HDDs, and a double right angle USB cable.

I used Sugru for mounting the RPi, HDD frame, and holding the hub in place.

It wasn't shown in the pictures, but I also picked up a FLIRC so I can use any remote. I do know that the RPi can send commands over CEC as well with new TVs.

I was looking to make more of these units, so If anyone is interested in buying, let me know.

I actually got it as a Christmas gift, but here's the one I have -

WD 3TB Black My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBBKD0030BBK-NESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W8XXYN2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_VPx7xbH8Y8HY7

I love that there's no external power cord. I just use the USB port in the back of my Xbox and the HDD just sits back there completely hidden.

I'd recommend Western Digital over Seagate. From what I've heard, Seagate has a much higher failure rate.

I priced match at my local target. You gotta remove the casing but it's very simple with a flat head screwdriver. I think the guide also shows you how to remove it and format it.

I'd take care of the hard drive before messing withe the PS4

Make sure you back up your saved data to the cloud first if you have PlayStation plus. Otherwise a flash drive will work.

I use this 4 TB USb 3.0 external hard drive which I got at a pretty heavy discount close to a year ago now (list price is $195 Cnd and I got it for like $125). The speed is good and I've never had a problem with it. The size is also good enough that I've only had to start recently deleting my old raw footage.

u/x0x_CAMARO_x0x · 1 pointr/xboxone

Deluxe gives a few small items but nothing that is a huge deal. The deluxe I feel is not really necessary, but to each their own. The season pass gives 3 story expansions (or additional story content at least). I recommend the base game plus season pass (or get the season pass later).

You can gift, there should be a button to "Buy AS Gift" on the Xbox Website. The physical and digital games will be the exact same file size.

Hard drives are not too bad this day and age. Really anything about 256 GB and USB 3.0 works. You can get drives for 50 bucks or so.

It all depends on size and brand. Search Amazon for "Xbox One External Hard Drives" if you want to research more.

[Here is Amazons Choice for Xbox One Hard Drive] (https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Game-Drive-Green-STEA2000403/dp/B01065S79E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523033744&sr=8-3&keywords=xbox+one+external+hard+drive)

By Canadian standards, the elements 8TB is a great deal. Don't forget to factor US state sales tax and 13% HST into the 10TB easystores - unless you've been in the US >48 hours you ain't bringing them back tax-free. Given the difficulty of sourcing the EasyStores without an AmeriFriend (Best buy blocks freight forwarding addresses), the next best option is to buy the 10TB elements from Amazon.com's Black Friday sale and ship them directly to Canada: https://www.amazon.com/10TB-Elements-Desktop-Drive-WDBWLG0100HBK-NESN/dp/B07G3QMPB5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542916212&sr=8-1&keywords=elements+10TB

Though this will increase your cost/TB calculation by a fair bit and certainly won't beat the 8TB Elements from BestBuy.ca. The only reason I mention it is that the WD 10TB white-label drives are helium-filled (less heat) and have unusually low power consumption. This is a big draw for me when filling a 24 bay chassis. YMMV.

The QNAP box offers good value, but if you decide to go a bit more hardcore, you really can't beat the ebay deals on used Supermicro 846BA-R920B boxes. The 846BA-R920B is ideal for 3 reasons, aside from the obvious hotswap bays. Platinum level power supplies (super efficient), passthrough backplane without expanders (avoid all the stupid compatibility/stability issues with expanders), and finally, SAS2 multilane connectors so you have 6 cables going to the backplane instead of 24 like with the TQ cases. Example (there's a whole lot more than this): https://www.ebay.com/itm/SUPERMICRO-4U-846BA-R920B-2x-E5-2660-32GB-24x-TRAYS-3x-LSI-9210-8I-JBOD/172518422437?epid=13010847355&hash=item282ae637a5:m:mQskbuTLwikNI-Bax42GiIw:rk:20:pf:

I worked out the taxes-in $CAD/TB as follows: 8TB bestbuy $25.4, 10TB bestbuy.com $28, 10TB amazon.com $30.8

Obviously if you find a way to avoid NY sales tax and/or HST, the 10TB from bestbuy.com gets cheaper.

What are you intending to use it for? Watch for the WD My Book 8TB external to go on sale, it was $185 2 weeks ago. Shuck it from the enclosure. It's a white labelled WD Red. Some power supplies provide 3.3v on the 3rd pin which prevents the drive from spinning up. Lots of ways around it posted online.

I use this $145 wireless hard drive to back up sd cards at the end of each day. (I don’t erase the cards themselves until I’m back home and they’re properly backed up)

I’m considering buying an iPad Pro to do some light editing and processing and some cloud backup, but it’s a big investment, I could get a really nice lens for that money...

I have a 13” mbp that I use for jobs on location but it has never crossed my mind to bring it on travels. I wanna stay light and mobile, and have everything of value on me when staying in less safe places.

u/coip · 2 pointsr/Seaofthieves

I think it'll work for PC too. The Xbox One will take any USB-external drive. If you're using it for media storage (e.g. movies, music), then it's plug and play. If you want to use it to store Xbox games and apps, then you will have to choose the popup option to format it for Xbox and that this will erase any existing data on it. You can format it for Xbox and then take it back to PC and, if you had chosen to format it for Xbox then you'd need to reformat it there on PC (which will, again, erase all the data).

EDIT Of course, you should definitely confirm that before buying, but for what it's worth, other Seagate "game drives" like this list PC as a supported hardware platform.

u/Fribbtastic · 1 pointr/gaming

It might be good to compare the Price of a Slim against the original version. The Slim has no real value except being smaller than the original PS4. The Original One might be even cheaper.

Also you can always check if you don't want to upgrade the Storage yourself through internal or external HDD (External must be between 250GB and 8TB).

So it might be cheaper to buy the original Ps4 with an external HDD that has 2 or 4 TB

https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/get-help/help-library/system---hardware/storage---data/ps4--external-hdd-support/

For example:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-4-500GB-Black/dp/B01GVQVQH2/ref=dp_ob_title_vg (slim version)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/External-Devices-Data-Storage/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-Drive/B017KE8OG0/ref=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1498217164&sr=1-6&keywords=external+hard+drive

With that you would have a Ps4 Slim and 4,5 TB (4TB external 500GB internal) storage for just about £350

I've been using this on a recent three week holiday and I highly recommend it. I didn't bring a laptop with me :)

Most of the negative reviews on Amazon relate to trying to use it as a streaming media device which it doesn't do well. As a backup device for SD/microSD cards it works excellent.

But, I would recommend not wiping and reusing the memory cards so that you have TWO copies of your photos and videos for redundancy in case something happens to one or the other.

u/Y3tiyota · 0 pointsr/xboxone

I bought an 8TB Western Digital external with USB 3.0 back in July 2016. No issues and I'm very happy with it. Ever since I've only bought digital downloads and have 4TB or so left. I paid around $250 back then and now Amazon has an updated version for $150. It's one that I recommend.

Worst part about this is I'm going to have to buy that 8 TB drive to hold all the games they've given us since GWG has came out.

I really enjoyed Halo 3 when they ported it over. It was such a blast playing with some people who never quit the game and pretty much were friends since they were almost the only ones still playing.

Really took me back to when my friends and I all had the time to hop on Halo 3 after work and play from like 7pm to 11pm a few nights a week.

With that said, Modern Warfare 2 is the only reason I have my 360 still plugged in. I'm not sure if I'm going to sell my 360 when that game gets ported over or sadly box it up and just put it into storage the rest of its life.

Why would you go with $160 for 6 TB Seagate Barracudas when you can get a higher quality WD NAS drive with 8TB of capacity for the same price?

Shuck these and they have drives similar to the WD Reds which retail for much higher:

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/xboxone

That all depends on how much spare you're wanting. If you want to get an enclosure hard-drive you could buy one of these and put thousands of GB together, and have a couple hard drives going to your Xbox One (this also depends on how big your Xbox One library is)

or you could just buy a my book drive I currently use one of these myself on my Xbox One and love it.

I personally think 4TB hard drive is more than plenty for the first few years of Xbox One gaming.

Another thing to take into consideration would be do you plan on doing mostly exclusives and a few games for Xbox One? then 2TB would be perfect. But if you plan on having all of your games on an Xbox One I'd highly suggest getting a 4TB hdd. I myself have almost 20 Xbox One games worth nearly 1TB in storage and its very handy to have.

Is Seagate Game Drive for Xbox 2TB Green (STEA2000403) good? Because in its description says (like every hard drive company) "Works flawlessly with Xbox One and Xbox 360." This hard drive is cheap in my country. On Amazon, its price is $124.97 with shipping cost and estimated import fee. I can buy this if can save me from uninstalling games. :) https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Game-Drive-Green-STEA2000403/dp/B01065S79E

u/zimzamzoom2 · 0 pointsr/PleX

If you're just adding a couple HDDs to your PC then don't worry about going over your power supply's rated use.

But if you're curious have a look at this http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2148649/psu-calculator-trust.html

My advice is to not buy external drives because you will always buy more HDDs and eventually you'll have 5-10 externals each taking up a power socket and lots of floor space.

Instead I would recommend buying a large (6-10TB) internal drive. That way you will end up with fewer HDDs so that means less power use, less SATA cables/slots used etc.

If you buy small 2-5TB then you'll need another in a short while, where as if you get an 8TB it'll take a lot longer.

When storing media it's a when and not an if you need more drives.

But to answer one of your questions, just buy one of these 8TB drives. Inside are WD Reds IIRC which isn't a shabby drive at all. Have a look around to see if you can get the same product cheaper, sometimes bestbuy etc has it on sale.

  1. Yes I would suggest getting an external hard drive, I would recommend this one

  2. If you put in the disc or download of a backwards compatible game, it just plays on your Xbox One. Keep in mind that to open up the 360 menu whilst on the backwards compatible game you have to press the View Button and the Menu Button at the same time.

  3. It's the same Xbox Live account you don't have to pay extra fees or anything and you can still use it on your Xbox 360. Everything stays the same, achievements, avatar, gamerscore.

  4. I don't really know many f2p games so I won't give you my input on that.

  5. Nothing too big about security, you can find everything in the security options.

I personally edit of the internal fusion drive in my 2012 iMac and store footage and personal stuff on a 5TB desktop hard drive (almost full).

Hind-sight 20-20, I would have preferred to get a larger raid array for my desk, something on the order of 20TB. Then also have a 500GB or bigger external SDD for fast editing of my current 1 or 2 projects. And then also a 2-4TB external hard drive for on-site backup and transporting large files. I don't know how I would like that setup, but from those that have some of the components, it seems like it would be a great setup. I would then reserve my computer hard drive for personal stuff.

u/aj_viz · 2 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

If you are a digital media hoarder like me then you are better off with NAS where you can add hard drives as they fill up. Look at Synology DS418 or equivalent QNAP version.

This is going to be very expensive if you go this route with cost of NAS + multiple hard drives.

Cheaper option is to stick in an 8TB drive like WD 8TB My Book. It often goes on sales between $110 - 120. If you are in US thanksgiving sale is close and you might get one then.

My set up is an old windows home server holding all media/data which shares media across all my devices in home (20TB).

For the shield I just have a 128GB sandisk Ultra USB drive attached to it to expand space.

-If you use your music unlimited trial, make sure to turn off the auto-renewal.

-If your TV supports RGB Full, enable it on BOTH the TV and PS4. Use a calibration image in the web browser to see that all of the blacks are correct (you should see different shaded squares).

-Replace the hard drive early to spend less time transferring things over (if you plan to replace it at all). At this point most people are getting a 2TB by taking it out of this external.

-Remember to pick up both of your PS+ games every month. There's also warframe, war thunder, and blacklight retribution for free.

-Generally just go through the settings and edit things such as privacy to your liking.

Really, aside making sure you don't get suckered into paying for music unlimited it's pretty plug and play. I did see a huge difference by enabling RGB full on my TV and PS4 though. Some TV's don't support it. The hard drive is optional, but the games 40-50gb and the stock hard drive will only fit 8-9 of them.

This toshiba 1tb is cheap, fast (usb 3.0 transfer) and convenient. You don't need to mess with enclosures and it's a lot of space.

Edit: rpm's don't matter much when watching movies. The important thing is a good transfer speed. With USB 3.0 it transfers for me 80mb - 100mb per second when i'm transferring huge games, movies or large photo files. :)

Currently the Acer Spin 5 is on sale on Amazon for the Deal of the Day, and it has: i7-8550U processor, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD storage, and 1080p 13.3" touchscreen display. The laptop has a decent battery life, expect at least 7 hours for light general use. For photo editing, it should be a great fit, it has decent color coverage. The laptop is both 2-in-1 and touchscreen. You can use an external hard drive, like a 1 TB external hard drive for more storage.

What /u/DrWoolyNips said. However, beyond the list, generally any USB 2.0 hard drive will work, as long as it's formatted properly. Although if you're going to buy a drive, you'd probably be better off getting something like this or something else in that form factor. That exact model is what my Wii runs off, and this style has the added advantage of being smaller and being pretty much tanks (I've dropped and knocked over my setup more times than I care to admit). Of course, if you have that drive lying around, just give it a shot and see if it works.

For $50, you're not going to get more than 500 GB of space. That might be more than enough right now, but you should know that hard drive space gets cheaper and cheaper the more you buy in one go. The first 500 GB will cost you $50, and that's with a cheap brand (Toshiba). The next 500 will cost you just another $20, and that's from a much more reputable brand. Then you can double your space to 2 TB for just another measly $10. After that, the price goes up pretty linearly, at a rate of about $10/TB.

My point is, if you're going to invest in a hard drive, it's better to spend a little more to get a lot more space. You get far more bang for your buck that way, and with the way download sizes on games and media are growing these days, 500 GB won't last you nearly as long as it used to.

Yes they are.

The one you linked to is the previous model, and only comes with a 1 year warranty if you live in good ol' Murica.

However, the newer model is the same price, linked here on Amazon:

comes with a 2 year warranty, and the hard drive inside is rated at a higher max temperature.

I'd suggest buying the newer model. For the same price, you get the better rated model (both are 5900 rpm Archive hdds however) and double the warranty.

>The main reason is to update Word. I edit in Word for various university press clients, and an important one told me all their files shared online are in Word 2011. So I think they expect me to have it. It's also a pain to have to use a converter every time I receive a file in .docx.

I'd recommend the latest version of Office. It's dramatically improved over older versions. You don't want to play with Apple's version of Word, called Pages. It's great, but you need to be opening and saving these files with the same program that your client is using so formatting doesn't get screwy. And the last thing you need is a bunch of versions of each file, as you import it to Pages, then export back to Word.

If you go with an Office 365 subscription, you get the iPhone apps, too, which are well designed. But a one time purchase isn't bad if that's your preference (especially if you're fine continuing to upgrade so rarely).

>If I upgrade to the latest OSX, should I first put all current Office 2004 files onto a thumb drive? I guess I don't understand what you mean by saying that upgrading the OSX would kill earlier programs. Is there a way to know which ones, and does it mean that no pre-upgrade files can be used anymore?

You need to have all of your stuff backed up before doing the upgrade, even if it's just on a thumb drive (though I'd really prefer you get something like this.) In fact, you need to have everything backed up, period. You're working with an old machine and some day it will die.

What I mean by kill programs is that the Word program itself won't open. All of your documents, pictures, etc will work perfectly fine. It's just that the old app you're using to open your Word files won't work, but if you get the current version of the program, it will open all your files. If you use any other programs that you got from someone other than Apple, they may need to be upgraded.

>I currently have 6 GB RAM and 146 GB free space on my hard drive.

RAM sounds fine. If you can afford it, replacing your hard drive with a solid state drive (no moving parts) will dramatically increase the speed at which everything opens when you need it. Just a matter of personal preference, though. You've got plenty of space so upgrading isn't a requirement.

u/scottgal · 3 pointsr/DataHoarder

Combine that with two USB3 (shuckable) 10Tb for £150 each ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07G3QMPB5/ref=dra_a_rv_mr_ho_xx_P1300_1000?tag=dradisplay0bb-21&ascsubtag=e33d7bf9dc8fd5ec9d11c92010884e8d_S ) and you have 20Tb of storage in a 4 Bay NAS for £600. Of course with two bays spare for future expansion. That's pretty amazing!

u/Mustang1718 · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

Would this be worth pairing with a hard drive enclosure to work as an XB1 hard drive?

Looks like with the $5 discount and the the enclosure, it would total $70 before tax. So it would be 7,200 RPMs speed using this bulkier setup vs. $86 for a 5,400 Game Drive that has the same storage capacity. I have no idea if it would need some type of formatting or would be plug and play though. But a cheaper price and better performance along with a free PC game is hard to pass up.

u/sgurschick · 1 pointr/xboxone

I use this. It'll be a while before I run out.

https://smile.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB4000100/dp/B00TKFEE8K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480207957&sr=8-1&keywords=4gb+external+hard+drive

You can copy the games on your internal drive over to external or just leave them on your internal drive. you can setup up xbox to download all future games to the external drive.

Also, make sure that you save a few GBs of free space on your internal drive for because backwards compatible games need to install some files (few MBs) on the internal drive.

u/PhotoTableau · 2 pointsr/WeddingPhotography

Whoa. Hold up. Do you have a memory card for every single event/wedding/session?

I appreciate your wanting to keep everything backed up. Very responsible and professional!

Some nodes haven't any incentives now to maintain themself other than maintaining the network.

They are doing it for free now.

After a possible increase of the space, this is the cost of a 5 TB hd:
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop-External-Storage-STDT5000100/dp/B00J0O5R2I/

I'm sure that there are cheaper.

There are also other nodes that are maintained by the industry, and by making the Bitcoin money more liquid, the market will increase.

With a bigger market and then more services, there will be more nodes that are needed to be sure to know what is happening on the network.

Miners don't seem to have problem of money for buying a new hd...

u/traal · 4 pointsr/DataHoarder

> The main data source is on a btrfs raid1 filesystem

Do you take regular BTRFS snapshots? If so then the data might still be there.

For offsite, the simplest solution would be a USB drive that you keep at work or a friend's house. (You should probably encrypt your data first.) Amazon has a 3TB drive for $70. It's a pretty slow drive so if you had to restore the whole 900GB, it would take about 6 hours.

u/XeroSaints · 11 pointsr/xboxone

Your paying extra for the Xbox green which is abandoned on the console itself. Like others on here I use a 5TB seagate which sells on Amazon for $130 Amazon. I've been using it for over a year and loving it, It even looks like a mini Xbox. The one I'm linking I think is a newer model then the other one previously linked this is why they have a different look. http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop-External-Storage-STDT5000100/dp/B00J0O5R2I

u/AH_Josh · 1 pointr/xboxone

I bought the Seagte 8TB stand up drive, and still havent filled it up. Was 160 USD on sale. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

Edit: Here it is

The best part of tech is it continues to drop in price. Also it has a passthrough that is recognized by the xbox, so you can use USB devices on the drive, and it'll be usable on the Xbox.

u/KusoLeCrap · 4 pointsr/pcmasterrace

u/team_xbladz · 1 pointr/xboxone

u/tharghans · 1 pointr/DataHoarder

The problem is that my 3 old hd dont have vents, they are like this:

https://www.amazon.com/d/External-Hard-Drives/Elements-Desktop-External-Hard-Drive/B002QEBMCI

And I rather not "open" them just to be safe... think a fan would still help? Thanks!!

u/krimsonstudios · 2 pointsr/Winnipeg

While I am sure there are others out there, I am just recommending this one since I have purchased from them before and can vouch for their customer service quality.

Could also check Amazon as they have pretty consumer protective return policies.

Edit -

And something like this is what I mean when I say move the 1TB HDD to a portable enclosure. Let's you buy a reasonable sized SSD (256gb) and not feel like you need to go big with a 512/1TB SSD since you can still get your storage on the portable drive.

https://www.amazon.ca/ORICO-2588US3-Screw-Less-2-5-inch-Enclosure/dp/B00IWOZAAQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1540313103&sr=8-3&keywords=2.5%22+hdd+enclosure&dpID=4178f2u7SLL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

u/Kitazaki · 1 pointr/xboxone

The 2TB Xbox One S launches at $400 though. You could get a deal on 500GB current model right now with Kinect for $279 and you can get a 3TB external HDD for $120 or less, giving you an Xbox, Kinect, and 3.5TB storage for the same price.

Unless you really care about 4K blu-ray, it's way better to get a regular Xbox right now.

u/flametex · 1 pointr/computers

Could get a "wireless harddrive" from the likes of WD or seagate.

https://www.amazon.com/Passport-Wireless-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B01F5LVTO4/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=WD+My+Passport+Wireless&qid=1556761493&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Or if you are a tinkerer another option would be to get a raspberry pi which runs off 5v (can be 12v with the right adapters and converters). From there can enable the wifi onboard to be an AP and setup a media center/stream box.

u/Greg00135 · 1 pointr/HomeServer

Any standard external USB drive will do what you need. Some do come with extra software that helps automate backups, but you aren't required to use it and it can almost always be easily removed.

Something like this would work if you'd like something compact and to avoid extra power cables.

u/dragontamer5788 · 3 pointsr/hardware

> RPI4 has usb3 and full gigabit network, so for NAS purposes, it's completly fine.

2x USB 3.0 ports means you're quite limited in expansion. Even this cheap motherboard supports 4x SATA connections.

The Rasp. Pi4 itself can only reach 300MB/s read/write speeds. Modern hard drives are around 200MB/s, which means you're CPU-limited (or perhaps internal bus-limited) on mirrored-drive setups. (200MB/s across 2x drives == woooops, Rasp. Pi too slow for that)

10Gbps Fiber switches are only $240 now. You can remove the network bandwidth by using DAC SFP+ ports and an Ebay'd Mellanox Connectx-3 (under $50).

---------

Actual SATA drives give you more flexibility as well as better specs. Consider this 8TB USB Drive. Do you know if its SMR or PMR? I bet you its shitty SMR and simply undocumented on the materials. SATA-drives are just better documented and labeled than USB-drives in my experience.

Why avoid SMR? Well... because it sometimes hits 10MB/s transfer speeds., that's sequential mind you. 10MB/s is slower than many people's internet connection, let alone Rasp. Pi. So if you want any degree of reasonable responsiveness, you should stick with PMR or CMR drives only.

---------

A common NAS setup would be 3x hard drives (RAID5 like, or RAIDZ, with one parity drive). You simply don't have enough USB connections for that however.

u/terkistan · 2 pointsr/applehelp

The short answer is that you activated iCloud Music Library, a way of storing your iTunes library in the cloud on your computer.

This MACWORLD article gives a good intro to what you experienced, and this iMore landing page links to several articles about iTunes, local vs iCloud music storage, and more.

Personally I don't deal with music in the cloud, aside from a subscription to Apple Music (which I love and which has almost completely eliminated the amount of listening I do with my own music: 36,000+ songs so far, with a couple of hundred CDs still unripped and sitting in boxes). I do not use iCloud Music Library, instead keeping all my music on a drive (and a backup drive, and BackBlaze online backup

Cases are hard, especially at your price range. Read the reviews, make sure they can fit your pieces, and make sure the reviews say they have good cooling. I can't really make a recommendation at your price range. You have to decide what you are going to sacrifice to bring it under your budget.

> I currently have this https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Basics-Portable-HDTB210XK3BA/dp/B005J7YBRW. is it any good?

I don't know but the reviews look great. It won't go inside your case, but it could be plugged into a USB port. If I was you, I would plug that sucker in a usb port on the back of my case and use it until I can afford a 1TB internal HDD

Best buy and Amazon currently have 2TB Western Digital My Passport Ultras for $89. I don't have the hopper (I have the ViP722k), but it was still fairly easy to transfer programming from my old receiver to a replacement receiver. I had about 170GB of programming to transfer, and it took ~8 hours each way. btw, these EHD's are USB powered.

u/DrinkinMcGee · 3 pointsr/dji

No, it isn't, and here's why:

This is $6, weighs less than a gram, has no moving parts to break and is smaller than a stick of gum. Much like the HDD shown, it too requires a laptop or desktop to be useful. This is handy.

This is $179, which is more than the DJI unit, but it has a built in card reader AND a battery so you can use it in the field AND wifi so you don't even need to dig out a cable when you get home. That is handy.

If you want a 2tb external drive, here ya go - It's $70 (almost half off the DJI price), save yourself some time and just write DJI on with a sharpie.

That's the one I bought and it has worked great for me. Able to install most of my games. It does need a power source but I feel it's worth it.

And with the purchase I just made, I'm probably done for Prime Day.

When you want to share an Amazon link - shorten it to the "/dp/<10 character long Amazon Standard Identification Number>" like this

I've been using this external from this link for the last year and I love it. There is also an updated version at this link as well for slightly cheaper.

Could always get one of these if you prefer Amazon. Pretty sure they have the helium filled white labels from HGST. In the 8TB model anyways.

1.) You can get my favorite 2TB external hard drive now for under $100. Unless you've already gotten an S that's a much cheaper way of getting extra storage.

2.) Grab the free Games with Gold for this month if you haven't already. You get 48 Xbox One and backwards compatible Xbox 360 games a year this way, and I highly recommend Forza Horizon (even if you don't like racing you can still drive around at your leisure) and Mirror's Edge, with Earthlock and Assassin's Creed Chronicles China shaping up to be solid.

3.) Get EA Access. Even without any of the sports games, it's awesome to be able to get Battlefield 4 and Hardline, Dead Space, Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2, Unravel, and Titanfall, all of which are far more valuable than the $30/year membership.

4.) My favorite exclusives are Gears 1-Judgment (which I got from preordering Gears Of War Ultimate Edition and you can get by preordering Gears Of War 4 or installing your old 360 discs or digital copies if applicable), Halo The Master Chief Collection, Sunset Overdrive, and Titanfall.

5.) Get Life is Strange. You and even your non gamer friends and family members will thank me later.

8 TB seagates externals are on sale at Amazon for 150 Just shuck the drive and you're good to go :P or keep it external.

Or get a mybook for 170, shuck it and keep the enclosure and you're ok for warranty. Just put the drive back into it before you ship it back and say you had to take it out for data recovery.

u/Tennovan · 2 pointsr/xboxone

You might also look into this drive. I have the older version and it's worked perfectly fine for the past 16 months.

u/Moist-Moose · 3 pointsr/nintendo

There's no real good summary in the comments here, and I just looked into all of this since I'm in the same situation.

Nintendo recommends you use an externally powered hard drive, like this. The single USB port doesn't have enough power to use a more portable hard drive, like this, unless you have a Y-cable, like this. The Y-cable provides enough power to the hard drive for proper operation since there are two usb ports. The problem is that Y-cables can be hard to find locally, and you almost always have to order them online. Mine is taking 3 weeks to get here.

Flash drives can also be used, but Nintendo says that the constant writing and re-writing that occurs on the drive as a result of gameplay can eventually corrupt what is on the flash drive, possibly deleting data and save files. Of course, it's up to you what you do, but the general consensus is that externally powered hard drives are the most reliable way to go.

If you google "Nintendo Wii U Hard Drives" Nintendo has a whole page on it. Can't link to it since I'm at work.

Thank you so much!
>Also, the timings on that patriot RAM is total dogshit at 19-19-19-43 at 2666mhz. Like I didn't even know they made DDR4 Ram with that bad of timings.

I didn't know the ram I picked was that bad. D: Time to read about ram timings, until now I only looked at the speed(Mhz) and if it was DDR4.

>EDIT: I didn't touch the case because honestly, I don't know if I can find something comparable in that price range.

Sadly the case is out of stock now :(. So, if you can find a decent case around the $20-30 usd mark I would appreciate it !

>You can always grab a Hard drive later or if you have one in an old pc, just reformat that one and install it.

I currently have this https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Basics-Portable-HDTB210XK3BA/dp/B005J7YBRW. is it any good?

EDIT: So I found these ones thermaltake versa h17 and DIYPC Alnitak-BK Black. Not sure which one is better though.

u/scurvebeard · 1 pointr/wiiu

I saw a lot of recommendations for the Toshiba Canvio 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drive back when I was looking to expand my console's storage. $60 for a reliable 1TB hard drive that's also small and light? I was all over it.

Keep in mind that it doesn't have an AC adapter - it draws power directly from the USB line, and the Wii U doesn't supply enough power to one USB line to power the device. You need a USB 3.0 Y-cable (plug this cable directly into the device) or a USB Y-adapter (plug the drive's provided USB cable into this adapter.) Then you'll have two USB plugs leading to the same device. Don't worry, only one line carries data, but both lines carry power. Insert the two plugs into the USB ports in the back of the Wii U and you're golden.

These adapters are only like $5-$8, but get them from Amazon. I spent a week trying to find them anywhere else while I waited for a third-party seller to ship it. Best Buy, Fry's, Radio Shack, Target, Wal-Mart - nobody even knew what I was talking about.

Alternatively, get an external storage device with its own power supply. I don't have a recommendation for that. You could also use a USB flash drive but those aren't designed for constant writing - they will eventually fail.

u/bean9045 · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

If you want to take the time to learn how to do it you can hook up one of these to your television with an external hard drive (first one I found) while running ubuntu. While it would take a bit of skill to set up it would also run you under 300 dollars.

IPA is available for linux

Setting up a linux home server/torrent box

I've been entertaining this idea myself after I read about someone making a dedicated torrentbox with a RasberryPi.

EDIT: This is only going to consume somewhere around 5-10$ of electricity per year whereas a home server would be running closer to 200+. Another thing to consider.

u/MVPbeast · 1 pointr/xboxone

Don't do it. You have no idea what brand / quality of drive is inside that enclosure, and on top of that, both Seagate and WD have external USB3 3TB drives on Amazon at $99.

Also, you should check any local Walmart locations around you. It seems they're clearancing a lot of their HDDs, including 3TB units from Toshiba, Seagate, and WD. I picked up several in the $50 range yesterday morning. There are numerous threads about this on Slickdeals.

u/MagnusAuslander · 2 pointsr/DataHoarder

Go to Amazon.com. Type in "USB 3.0 hard drive". Pick one. I got a 4TB Seagate with fantastic reviews for $80. Loved it so much, I bought 2 more (1 for my PS4 and 1 for my laptop). It's $90 right now, but still not bad.

Forgive my ignorance but you seem pretty knowledgable about these parts and I know nothing about computer hardware - I bought this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N2S6ZUQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_HH0wCbY7KF72G and ran FH3 off it fine but now when running FH4 off it I'm getting "stability issues" with random crashes - switched to the internal and still having issues. Judging by the price difference I assume the HD I have now isn't good enough to run the new game without these issues but neither is my internal hard drive apparently....so if I get a better external HD I won't have these problems(I ask because the cheapest ones look to be 150$+) Seems kinda insane they built a game that's so advanced the consoles it was made for cant even run it properly.

u/NecroFriedChicken · 2 pointsr/cordcutters

I would recommend using this OTA DVR between your Cable box and tv (or xbox one) and a USB stick or USB hard drive, Any type of USB storage is needed for the DVR function. (it can hold up to 2TB max per drive)

Once your cable is gone, you can attach an antenna to it and continue to use the DVR with your xbox one for Over the Air channels with the xbox one guide.

Or you can get something like This TV Tuner stick for your PC and connect your Cable box to it and record shows on to your PC.

P.S.: and Im gonna be using this http://www.amazon.com/Elements-Desktop-External-Hard-Drive/dp/B002QEBMCI as my external hdd...

Now, thinking on it, im sure you can also(if needs arise) buy a hard drive above 2-3tb that will fit. Must be a 2.5 seta hard drive, and if you have a pc masterrace friend they likely have 2 or more hard drive slots and could copy your old hd to the new one for you. ;)
