Top Reddit comments about Essential Fatty Acid Combination Nutritional Supplements:

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/vegan

the only nutrient that is harder to get on vegan diet is b12 as far as I know. everything else will just require you to learn and change your habits a little bit.

  • B12: I take this brand, which is a little pricey, but is very high quality. Contains both methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin, and does not contain any additives. If you set a price alert on camelcamelcamel.com you can also get it for pretty cheap (I got a years supply for about $24 dollars a bottle). One bottle should last you a month or possibly more.

as for other nutrients that are important to make sure you're getting, vegan or not:

  • Zinc: this is a good brand if you want to supplement with it. pumpkin seeds are a good whole food source.

  • Iodine: Spirulina is a good source, a daily serving will get you about 30% of the RDA, and spirulina is kinda like a whole food multivitamin. High in protein too. Sea vegetables like dulse (would recommend getting atlantic only) are great sources of iodine. I put a tablespoon or two in a smoothie that I have regularly.

  • Omega 3 (EPA/DHA): Pure encapsulations is generally a good brand, though this particular formulation seems to melt/stick together. They'll probably fix that. You can also get them from flax seeds (either ground, or blend them), hemp seeds, stuff like that. Make sure you're getting a good balance of EPA and DHA-- some things just contain a lot of DHA.

I handle most of those just by taking b12 supplement in the morning, and sticking some flax, hemp, and pumpkin seeds as well as dulse flakes in my smoothie. Once it's a habit, you don't need to think about it anymore.

As far as any other concerns, it's just about making sure you're eating enough, as vegan foods are less calorie dense and so if you eat the amount you're used to eating, you won't be eating enough; and eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables somewhat consistently. Adding a bunch of things like raspberries, frozen wild blueberries, spinach, kale, cilantro, etc to a smoothie in the morning also makes this easy.

Making fruit a big part of your life also makes things easy. Apples, bananas, avocados, dates, mangoes etc are great, easy snacks.

Make steamed potatoes or other veggies-- it is so damn easy! You just wash the potatoes, put some water in the bottom of the pot, steam for 15-30 mins (until a fork can go all the way through), and then toss with some herbs, olive or coconut oil, and sea salt, and you have a delicious filling dinner.

IMO: don't announce to your parents. Make it a transition, phasing animal products out as you learn how to follow a vegan diet. That way you'll probably avoid fears about your health and other related things, and it'll be easier for you (and more likely that you stick with it).

You could say something like you're working to reduce your consumption if you're asked. The word vegan can be scary to some people.

Make fruit a staple would be my advice for diet. Super easy + healthy + tasty. Steamed potatoes (with other stuff if you like, but I like them on their own with a bit of salt and cayenne) are a super easy satisfying meal, which you will crave as you make the switch. Also be sure you're getting critical nutrients (not that a vegan diet makes you any more likely to be deficient than the standard american diet)-- b12, iodine, and omegas are the big ones I think (the linked brands are the best ones I've found). Those supplements are expensive, but it helps that you don't need a lot. A bottle of the b12 could last you two months, and iodine could last you a year.

Spirulina is also like a vegan whole food multivitamin/mineral and good source of easily assimilable protein.

Those are the essentials in my opinion.

I agree with potent about the antibiotics and meds. That's very important, now, and you should make contact with a rehabber, at the least, to get the appropriate meds. An infection in the head is obviously a very serious thing because you don't want to make the brain damage worse. What state/province are you in? I'd like to see if I can help you find some meds.

Here is a link for an e-collar to prevent the squirrel from making things worse with scratching http://www.henryspets.com/rodent-e-collar/

For squirrels and disease, there is not much to worry about. Rodents can rarely contract plague, and I do mean rarely. It's only been found a few times in the southern US, where it is quite hot. It's extremely unlikely that this one has it. There is a type of mange mite that they may have which can bother us, though, but it's a mild problem on human skin, and it is very easy to get rid of. I've had it myself. Basically Dawn dishwashing liquid soap will kill those mites as well as any fleas, and then there goes your plague hypochondria because it's usually passed by fleas.

They're extremely clean animals, and there is virtually no chance of zoonotic infection. You already handled raccoons, for gods sake, and they are typically riddled with parasites. You sure should not be scared of a squirrel after that.

For the brain damage, DHA works wonders, and in my experience, even its precursor, ALA is enough to promote remarkable recovery from brain injury. Just do a search on google scholar for DHA and traumatic brain injury, and you will find hundreds of studies, both on rodents and humans showing the benefits of this nutritional therapy. The best supplement on the market for DHA is omega 3 + Think http://www.amazon.com/o3mega--triple-60Capsules-Maximize-Power/dp/B000CC9E2G/ref=sr_1_16_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1457287842&sr=1-16&keywords=omega+think That company makes excellent products. I really recommend them.

http://squirrelrefuge.org/booballrecipe.html Here is a recipe for boo balls, but feel free to improvise. You are going to want either squirrel formula from fox valley nutrition (google it) or else a good puppy formula such as esbilac or royal canin. Squeeze the DHA capsule's contents into the booball recipe and feed it liberally to the squirrel.

Finally, here is an ok guide for diet. They promote those henry's blocks like crazy on that forum, though, and they are very expensive. Any healthy block like harlan or mazuri is great for making boo balls. Don't shell out extra money for those blocks, is my advice. http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?44440-Healthy-Diet-for-Pet-Squirrels

And you can try to find someone to get you meds on that forum, too.

But really, your concern should not be your hypochondria, here. This squirrel is literally at death's door, and for real, too. He needs antibiotics and needs them desperately.

u/walkingcount · 4 pointsr/Paleo

Amit S. Katz spoke about it. It comes in oil, vitamin, and tea forms (I think that's all.) It's a universal health supplement for skin, bones, heart health, and optimal digestion. The big thing with it was the omega-7 fatty acids. Basically, it makes you a food digesting and nutrient absorbing super human!

Here are the links I checked out for further research on it:

Sea Buckthorn Omega 7 Supplement on Amazon

Why Omega 7 is awesome

What Sea Buckthorn actually is

And the great thing about chiropractors is that they focus more on healing the body with natural methods and incorporate much much more than just cracking your neck. Physical and digestive health are key. My family chiropractor can tell me what nutrients I'm missing in my diet by my body alignment and gives great healthy food tips.

I would suggest finding a chiropractor that either follows a paleo diet or is very familiar with it.

I just started taking it for vaginal dryness...we’ll see if it helps! I sure hope so. Mouth and eye dryness have been easier for me to treat than that. I’ve basically stopped having sex, because it’s a huge chore and requires a TON of lubrication and is still painful with that. Sorry, TMI haha. If the sea buckthorn helps even a little, that’ll be great.

Eta: This is the one I’m taking. I hope it’s the right kind!

Thanks for the reply.
I'm not that well versed in the field of chemistry as you could probably tell. I can replace the eggs with Fish oils? That's great!

Will these fish oil capsules do?

Right now on my list is:

Fish oil

Whole Milk.

Will this be good enough?

And man, this is an amazing subreddit. So many fast responses, it's so lively.
Reading this place, you guys might not realise it, but damn, all of you are pretty much as intelligent as they come. I think the racetams have been doing you guys well enough!

I take 2600 mg (two pills) each of evening primrose oil and borage oil a day. One of each in the morning and one of each in the evening before bed. Been doing it for over three years now.

The evening primrose oil is high in linoleic acid (LA) and I find it really takes the edge off of hormonal swings (pms, cramps, etc.) The borage oil is high in gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) and I find it does wonders for acne and skin inflammation. I was one of those people that had the classic breakouts along the jawline during certain parts of my cycle, and now my face is totally clear. I also have mild eczema and taking the borage oil helped a lot with those as well.

That said, taking the evening primrose oil is enough to help with acne for a lot of folks. I just happened to be one of those that needed more help.

Other things I do to help with my myriad skin issues:

  • BHA chemical exfoliant in the morning, AHA chemical exfoliant in the evening before bed.
  • Avoid products with fatty alcohols, sulfates, and silicones for skin and hair. This includes moisturizers, cleansers, shampoo, conditioners, and makeup. I found that all of those either caused eczema or acne flare-ups in one way or another.

Before going right to finasteride try pumpkin seed oil dosed at 400mgs-1000mgs a day. It's been shown to not only combat hairloss but improve fullness/thickness of your hair. It's also got natural DHT blockers in it.

I bought these on Amazon :

I want to recommend that you get your son on a good fish oil for his ADHD. We give my daughter a very high dose (recommended for her neurological disorder) and I know that other children with things like autism, SPD, and ADHD have also really benefited from fish oil. We give my daughter a concentrated liquid, but the same company also makes a gummy that I bet your son would enjoy.

Here is the gummy on amazon.

Here is the one my daughter takes.

I do love the Boscia! I swear every other sunscreen I've tried broke me out (at 45 years old.. yay.). The buckthorn oil really seems to help calm the redness for me. I found it on Amazon after seeing it mentioned in a couple of forums and articles. Some of the claims about it are a little out there, but you know to take everything with a grain of salt when it comes to rosacea. (:

u/wetblanketdreams · 2 pointsr/PlantBasedDiet

Ah interesting. I've been using some website that rates supplement quality and this was what I decided on for the past 2 years.

NuTru Vegan Omega 3 DHA Supplements: O-Mega-Zen 3 Vegetarian Algae Oil Supplement with 150 mg EPA and 300 mg DHA - Plant Based Omega3 Essential Fatty Acids for Brain, Joint, and Heart - 40 Softgels https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0072POELM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Bd4XDbPKZWZAV

u/Lgara92 · 1 pointr/Gastritis

Wow okay, I don't know what that is like. Sorry, I'm from the US and am ignorant on health care in other countries.

Do you have holistic options? Or functional medicine? I have gastritis and see a functional doctor. If you have access to Amazon, there are some supplements you can try for healing the lining of your stomach. Here are some that have helped me.

Metagenics - Zinlori 75, 60 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005P0XCVO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_V07CDb840M5J9

Metagenics - Intesol - 60 Softgels https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GIGADI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_P17CDbT5171PB

Personally, I had to cut out gluten and dairy and that helped alot. Maybe there are things you can try without your doctor. Also can you ask your doctor for a probiotic? Even if they think you have a mental disorder, I don't see why they would deny you a probiotic

u/Carmack · 2 pointsr/Supplements

300mg DHA / 150mg EPA in this algae oil supplement. Works out to about $0.55 a day. :) This combined with a tablespoon of flaxseeds (for ALA) rounds out your omega 3 needs according to the amount recommended in this position paper from AND: https://jandonline.org/article/S2212-2672(13)01672-9/pdf

u/reeseallen · 1 pointr/Psoriasis

Regarding the fishy after-taste of omega supplements, you might try these gelcaps, which I prefer: http://www.amazon.com/Health-Sun-Total-Vegetarian-Lignan/dp/B000R7X0LC

I don't take them for my plaque psoriasis and I don't know if they have any effect on it, but they definitely aren't fishy.

u/chexxor · 1 pointr/Dryeyes

No cure, only reducing symptoms. I recommend:

4 pills of these omega pills per day: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014LE31OW

1-2 pills of a GLA product per day: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Z95JR0

1-2 sessions of eye heat pads per day: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078X6Z4QN

And if your eyes are currently terribly inflamed, visit an eye doctor which can get scleral lens for you. It'll help your eyes calm down by bathing them in liquid all day.

u/WV6l · 5 pointsr/vegan

I've been getting mine from Amazon. This one. It's the only one I've found without carrageenan which my bowels don't like. The amount of carrageenan in a capsule may be too little to matter.

I also take b12, D3 (fungus derived), a multivitamin, and a tiny dose of calcium carbonate (stirred into oats or whatever). The b12 is a 1000 mcg tablet take at four-day intervals, and the D3 is 5000 IUs taken at two-day intervals.

u/saltedcaramelsauce · 3 pointsr/MultipleSclerosis

Suggest it to your SO! Brand doesn't seem to matter, I've tried a couple. I'm currently using NOW Pumpkin Seed Oil 1000 mg.

u/Life-in-Death · 0 pointsr/PlantBasedDiet

As far as I can see, this one is only algae oil, it is what I used to take

Also, if you start supplementing daily with flax, over time (I think in around six months) your body has sufficient stores of ALA to convert to sufficient DHA and EPA as needed. And there is no worries with the product being degraded.
