It isn't fancy, but it works pretty well. This past Father's Day weekend, I took it about 200 miles to the Northern California coast. It was loaded with my Eagle Talon 120, a friend's Shadow Caster, all the fishing gear, and tons of camping gear for the weekend.

That little trailer handled it all like a champ, and tracked well even at 70mph and on the twisty mountain roads. For a few hundred bucks, I'm very happy with the trailer kit and build. I just have a few more final touches on it and it'll be perfect. Although to be honest, a good project is never done and I expect I'll be making mods on it forever.

ToDo list:

 • Move tie-down eyes further down the trailer side (moves buckles away from touching kayak)
 • Caulk all corners and joints
 • Install weather stripping on doors
 • Install aluminum flashing on corners
 • Cover "rails" with boat trailer carpet
 • Install rod holders inside trailer (2x - Berkley Twist Rod Rack)
 • Paint with boat deck paint (aircraft gray)

Yeah, that is what it is :) https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000BDD83M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Had my girlfriend sew a piece of fabric together to make the fit a bit tighter. It's removable so makes it easy to clean. As for the wand, I have it plugged into this timer( https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0184CG9K0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) so that I can have it turn on and then off for a little bit... over and over again. She found the magic wand a bit too strong so I also added an inline fan speed controler to lower the speed a bit ( https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01MXQG4UZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )

I think that'll be a great boat to get started with for calmer water. I mean, as long as it's safe for where you are kayaking, the boat you have is much better than the boat you don't! Plus you can probably sell it towards the purchase of a new boat down the line if you want. The only downside to that boat, is you'll only want to use it when the water is warmer, because since the seat sits pretty low you're more likely to get wet... not a huge deal, just something to consider.

Looks like you should be able to lash a milk crate down behind your seat, and once that's in place you can use zip ties to attach 2-3 sections of PVC to it for rod holders, or use one of these:

I like this
It’s a great rod rack, strong, light, and easy to relocate. It also looks a lot nicer than a pvc diy.

u/senor_roboto · 2 pointsr/DIY

This would look pretty clean. I'd go with this but also add in a square/stepped picture rail molding on the bottom 1/3 of the pine board. This will allow you to hang pictures and paintings without having to drill/nail into the wail. Plus you can move/adjust at will. Have these in my place and can't imagine not having them.

I use basic molding hooks with 90lb nylon-coated stainless steel leader wire attached via aluminum crimp sleeves. Thread the wire through a spring loaded picture hanging hook that attaches to a painting via a single or double screw D rink or its hanging wires. Once you have the right materials, it is easy to put up a picture and painting. Plus you can effortlessly and endlessly move laterally and vertically.

Here's a diagram of various hanging options. Prefer A for smaller paintings and B for larger ones as I like the clean lines.

I️ have one of these:

Allen Cottonwood Fishing Rod & Gear Bag, Olive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MK16O3O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_8fLbAb8SXG37N

I️ keep it in my house unless I’m on a trip, but it could easily be kept in my trunk. I️ like it because it’s not huge, so it forces me to keep my rods, reels, spools, leaders, tippet, fly boxes, tools, etc. organized between outings. I really love it.

For a free sliding seat, check out what this guy put together for his home rowing machine. Basically some fixed casters and a frame.

If you're just trying to make it statically adjustable like in the examples, I would mirror their hole and pin setup.

For the oar connection, maybe just drill right into frame and mount some of these cheap guys

Good Luck!

u/kdavidson0281 · 2 pointsr/Fishing

If you want to go even cheaper, this is my setup and it works great.

Kayak - $180

Rod Holders - $9

Anchor - $35

Anchor Trolley Kit - $20

A little bit of DIY, but it works great, and less than half the price you wanted to spend.

u/Taintmash · 3 pointsr/IceFishing

How much do you want to spend?
Does he have a depth finder or sonar? These are on the lower end price wise for marcums.
My dad and i each got eachother 2 of these last X-mas. had a good laugh.

u/drakins · 1 pointr/electronic_cigarette

I was hoping to get one for my evic, but a bit apprehensive because of the reviews. I feel like a fishing rod holder would work better if you just bought the double sided foam 3M tape.

Oh yeah! Hood latches are a solid plus. For poles - I found some “garage” type pole holders that are straps. They go great between the roll bars and so the poles basically hang from the ceiling.

I bought two cheap 2 rod rod holders of Amazon, and I zip tied them at an angle to my crate. Works pretty good.

Wow. Good eye. Fishing rod mount.

u/rockstar504 · 3 pointsr/kayakfishing

Lol well fyi the ~30$ rack is $20 atm during prime day. Just saying, it's one of the few items on amazon that actually went down in price for prime day.

*The Diawa Fuego I got for 75$ a few months ago is now 99 marked down to 75$... yea that's prime day.... "savings"

u/DrRabbitt · 2 pointsr/kayakfishing

like the rear flush mount rod holders? these are fine just drill the hole where you want them and use cheap pop rivets to hold them in place. Angle them out slightly if you plan on trolling with them so that the lines are separated more. For rod holders in front I prefer RAM mounts over the scotty ones just because they are easier to adjust positioning on and stuff

u/roraima_is_very_tall · 2 pointsr/flyfishing

maybe it's the current I fish in, but I don't see balancing my rod like that as any easier or less of a risk (of dropping it) than just grabbing it under my armpit or popping it into this gadget or the loop in my vest.

u/crowconor · 3 pointsr/flyfishing

I don't have that case but I have an Allen one I bought from Amazon that I like which is half the cost.

I used to hold my rod under my arm. I recently purchased a Smith rod holder to clip to my bag and love it.

u/sguerrero1971 · 1 pointr/sailing

Looks like a modified fishing rod holder, most fishing rod holders mount flush but they are at a slight angle under the deck. From it's location in the transom, it would have not fit unless the bottom was cut off. This would have been deep enough to hold a grill pole like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Magma-Kettle-Grill-Power-Grip-Holder/dp/B0018Y6SXU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1372350325&sr=8-3&keywords=magma+grill+mounts

As I look at the pictures you provided it looks like it was angled so that whatever was inserted hung out over the transom.

CAIKEI Fishing Rod Rack 2-in-1 Storage for Ceiling or Wall-Ultra Sturdy Strong Weatherproof Indoor and Outdoor Use https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MM3FN7X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_DLt7CbD1NTX60

They fit right over the stock ac tube mounts, just have to drill two 1/4” holes for the screws. And they are semi soft plastic so they conform to the curvature of the roof.

u/zzanderkc · 2 pointsr/djiphantom

Do plenty of tests before rigging it up and then test again over land while rigged to your phantom. Good luck!

u/Mr_IDGAF · 3 pointsr/Fishing

I would recommend this one so the rod can't slip when driving.

This is the one I got. The one on top has no foam, despite what the picture looks like. The rod end with the reel can sometimes slip out if I take corners too fast with my car.

u/vwtrey · 1 pointr/Fishing

I'm in the process of building this cabinet to store most of my fishing gear. I will be adding two sets of these rod holder... Berkley Twist Lok Rod Rack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000XU0NB8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_XIrxwbWJDZDBM

Is there anything you guys would add, or do differently? I'm going to want a second one, so I can play around with other ideas.

The handle sizes are different, I know. I should have paid more attention at Home Depot.

u/n1ywb · 1 pointr/boating

I got this rod holder for my boat, it has a slot for a knife and a slot for a pair of pliars (or in my case an even bigger knife) https://www.amazon.com/SeaSense-Single-Piece-Holder-White/dp/B004XAK90O/ref=sr_1_4?s=hunting-fishing&ie=UTF8&qid=1474594585&sr=1-4&keywords=rod+holder

u/Expedition_Engineer · 2 pointsr/flyfishing

I have this. I like it alot. It holds 4, 4 piece 9ft or shorter rods, 7 reels or spools, and has tons of pockets for everything else.
