From all of my observations of shops coming and going...I'd say start with a couple good quality drip makers, like Bunn. Dead simple to use, clean, and makes great coffee since the machine controls the water temp and volume per batch. Get the airpot systems if you feel you can afford them, if you want a "help yourself" style of coffee, but I really find that the plain old glass and steel carafes can really add to the ambiance of the place.

Next, get those commercial brewers plumbed in with a decent water filter. Huge difference in qualilty and convenience for you as the shop owner, since all you have to do is fill the brew basket and hit start; no worries about whether or not the reservoir is full. It will keep your machines cleaner and running better and longer between cleanings as well.

Since you have your awesome setup now, you can look at coffees. I'd just start simple, something a grade or two better than your basic Folgers or what have you. Something single-sourced, organic, fair-trade, etc. Like hamhead said, don't go nuts, but do be creative. And ask, always ask if the customers liked it or not, or what they would like to see you offer. Feedback is crucial.

Now, I know I've probably tl;dr'd you here, but I do have a point. If you're running a bakery, you need to be focused on making the best bakery possible for selling bakery goods--not coffee. This set up should help give you a high-quality product that's easy to sell along with your baked goods, giving you a good ROI and not break your bank in the process; nor should it require a large investment of your time (focus on the bakery stuff, remember?) trying to make fancy coffee. Just like in kung fu, you must master the basics before moving on to the falcon punch stuff. And, IMHO, finding a place where you can get a consistently good basic 'cup of joe' is like finding the Grail. A ceramic Grail filled with heavenly coffee.

u/mr_richichi ยท 3 pointsr/Baking

I got some pretty good baking swag this year.

First up was a Kopykake. I will be making disgusting amounts of cookies over the next year putting this thing to the test.

A KitchenAid Architect was shocked to see it was the full set as these are stupid expensive.

Possibly my favorite gift for kitchen stuff this year was DrawerDecor which has finally made my drawers a non clusterfuck.

Steel prep table similar to this but not this model. Got it before Christmas but was told it was an early xmas gift.

Wire Shelving similar to this, but again not this model. Its 4' wide and each shelf can take 600. It freed up SO much room for me. I highly recommend more shelving for any of you guys/gals who have the room for it.

18" Magnetic Knife Strip, again more stuff out of shelves, off of counter tops etc.

Glass mixing bowls

Last but certainly not least, I finally got this cookie sheet from chicago metallic. Such a nice piece.

Now I think it is worth noting that I bake for a living, and that most people don't actually want a prep table or a 3' tall projector in their kitchen but damnit I love it! :)

The main theme for this xmas seems to be helping me get my kitchen to the OCD level needed in a professional kitchen. Not sure the missus loves the strict flow of kitchen as much as I do but man, it feels good and looks great.

My now-wife has always had a fixation on Minneapolis ever since she toured a college there (she picked a different one thankfully, else we'd never have met). So for her birthday, I prepared a trip to the twin cities. She knew she was flying somewhere, I gave her general instructions on types of clothes to pack, but everything else was a surprise.

In preparation for the trip, I ordered a restaurant menu holder similar to this and prepared a fake restaurant menu for the trip. I picked her up for work to drive to the airport and told her, "Oh, by the way, I was looking at places to eat here and had one of them send me their menu," and then handed her the menu itself. She was very weirded out but opened it and within a few seconds it clicked and she was super delighted. She even teared up a bit at the length I went to for her birthday.

Prior to the trip, we had picked out her ring (she chose the band and stone, they told me when it came in but not her), so I had the ring with me on the trip and she didn't know yet but given the circumstances, I was pretty sure she was going to say yes. When we got to the airport, our flight unfortunately was delayed a bit and we didn't end up getting into Minneapolis until like 10:30pm. We got to the hotel and got checked in. She went to wash her face and when she came back out, I hit a knee and said "I don't want to wait another minute without you as my future wife. Will you marry me?" right there in the Courtyard Marriott.

She was so stunned her response was, ".....okay." Big smooch, ring on finger, etc etc etc. She says she wouldn't have had it any other way. She's very, very much a no-grand-gestures-in-public so this was the perfect way to get the proposal out of the way and get on to being engaged.

For our wedding, she was going to answer the "Do you?" question with "Okay" as our inside joke, but she was so caught up in the moment she forgot.

I use a 48" x 30" stainless steel prep table on casters, like what one might find in a restaurant kitchen or science lab. It was about $130 on Amazon (IIRC). I don't regret the expense one bit. I love it, and I almost wish I had gone with a 5' table rather than the 4'. Whatever you choose, be sure to give yourself plenty of room to set down things like your pizza peels, serving trays, tongs, gloves, etc.

More on why the prep table is awesome: The stainless wipes clean easily and looks nice with the Ooni Pro, which is also stainless. It has a shelf that hovers several inches above the ground and holds a plastic tote full of grilling tools, plus two types of charcoal and two bags of wood. As the table complies with NSF standards, there are many extra shelves and hooks available to customize the storage space, though I haven't availed myself of those yet. Casters allow me to roll the whole setup inside during the winter to prevent rust, but I can just as easily roll it outside to light up the oven anytime I want.

In short, the ease of use and attractive appearance of the stainless prep table option might keep you from ever getting out your bricks and mortar. Enjoy your oven!

Edit: added links in first paragraph.

Thanks, it was fun putting it together. Not saying you have to copy it exact, but here was my parts list if you wanted to.

2 of these, one top and one bottom and the plastic for the display

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LB6W0U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The glove ... just had to clip off the key ring part

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D67RNQB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The base

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BKWLNEI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The baseball display cases have a mirrored bottom, so I knocked it out of the bottom one so the light from the base shines through, and it hits the top mirror and looks great. I had to use some thin eva foam to level off the rounded bottom of the glove and cover the top of the upside down baseball case, but it looks great. You can get a plaque on Amazon or any local engraver's shop. I got mine on Amazon and it was for a different base that didn't work out, so its a little too big for the bottom, but its fine.

I think that one would be pretty cool. And if you need more organization within you could do something like this rather than the acrylic lipstick holders? Although I think that would actually be pretty fussy in that container...probably better in something square. this doesn't look right at all in the wicker...but the general shape is what I'm thinking, since it doesn't seem like you want drawers. Unless small, clear ones like this would do it for you.

u/MerryChoppins ยท 2 pointsr/homestead

You actually can use wash water for greywater systems as long as you are using "safe" products in your laundry and aren't using them to wash diapers or items soiled with blood/feces/etc. There are lots of products you can use that work well with said systems.

This website talks a lot about good options and practices. They even tell you on there not to store water over 24 hours. It almost will immediately start putting off odor and can get fetid very quickly, especially in a warmer climate.

If you just want a quick/easy/simple method, I'd look into a cheap PVC barrel setup like they have on that site. They make small farm tanks that will work if you want to do multiple loads of laundry and have a large garden. You can just run a large PEX hose from the washer drain to a tank. I would go with a bit more "processing" outbound than they recommend though.

You have to genuinely be careful with fats and certain solids if you want to use a pumpless setup like that. A good option to mitigate that and prevent a messy fix would be to install a simple PVC greasetrap similar to this. You might actually legally have to install one to have the thing up to code.

u/goldragon ยท 3 pointsr/sousvide

Checking OP's history, it looks like s/he bought it from Amazon, made by Perfect Sousvide. At $88 versus $25 for the Cambro food box itself, I think I would take /u/bigcat69's advice and cut the hole for the Anovo myself but it would be nice to have that hinged lid.

I think it is a nice idea to insulate around the box and the lid should help with evaporation but maybe OP should also insulate the top. I am sure it is nice being able to glance over and see the action going but heat rises so I would assume there is still a lot of heat loss through the lid.

u/buckyhelnats ยท 2 pointsr/weddingplanning

i'm striving for this as well. my wedding is more of a backyard bbq, so it may be a little different than a traditional wedding. we're opting for electronic invites (through paperless post), biodegradable plates/cups/utensils (i found a great deal at a yard sale. the women used to be an eco-wedding party planner!), green burlap table runners, second-hand dress from poshmark. no plans at the moment for favors, but if we decide, we'll opt for biodegradable take-home containers so people can bring home leftovers. best of luck!

u/Not_So_Rare_Earths ยท 2 pointsr/rockhounds

It's a cool idea. The toughest thing to wrangle will be the lighting. Gem jars are a common way to display small specimens and keep them from getting lost. However, even against a white background with bright overhead lights, some specimens are a bit too dark to see properly. F'rinstance, I have a fairly large faceted Ekanite which has a lovely deep forest green color in sunlight, but in a box it essentially just looks black. I suspect lighting will be what makes or breaks your build.

If you have a DIY bent, you could probably make a more eyecatching and engaging display with something like a pickup grabber (or something with similar function) for the cut stone, next to the rough stone displayed in a caliper stand. An "open air" design may help with the lighting, although you'd need to make sure that the background behind your display isn't distracting.

Also, you might want a loupe or magnifying glass handy for magnification.

3 days for my $85 hot/cold backpack to pay for itself.

PK-76F: Doubledeck Insulated Pizza/Food Delivery Backpack Bag, 16"x 15"x 18", With a Cup Holder. A Waterproof, Collapsible Food Take-Out Box For Catering, Restaurant, Delivery Drivers, 76Liters(Green) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NAGT78G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_5v0vDbG3ES0SX

Got it to start doing motorcycle deliveries on PM. It also came with an insulated 4 cup drink holder. Leave it in the back seat, keep your regular hot/cold bags in it and still keep the food in them. It will keep the food from warming the drinks. When you have someone nice enough to be waiting outside to meet you and they just expect you to hand them something from the front passenger seat, they will tip the shit out of you when you get out, open up the backseat, unzip your insulated box, take the food out of the insulated bag, so on, and so on. Itโ€™s a backpack so itโ€™s easier to carry on apt/hotel trips. It still makes the same impression. CAREFUL ABOUT STUFF SLOSHING AROUND WHEN YOU PUT IT ON YOUR BACK. It didnโ€™t take long to get the hang of it. Some people snicker, most respect the hustle.

YMMV: In Denver

Ps: If your killing it, try to pay it forward and tip out the people making it possible. Itโ€™s more work for them and they really arenโ€™t getting a slice. Obvious I mean chains, mom & popโ€™s love it.

u/wiseblueberry ยท 2 pointsr/SodaStream

I use my soda stream to make carbonated water, and then pump soda syrup into my glass to make a drink. I can have something different each time if I want. This is the cola syrup I use. I also have cherry and vanilla syrup so I can have a cherry cola or vanilla cola if I want it. Soda stream syrups are gross, especially if you don't care for artificial sweeteners. Monin syrups I order online, but Torani I can buy from Smart and Final for $5 a bottle. You can buy pumps to fit the Torani and Monin syrup bottles, which make dispensing the syrup super easy. I usually use 4-6 pumps of syrup per glass.

> Except the ethics and stuff.

Isn't amazing how taking something out of context can completely change the intended meaning? I never said " Me only eating meat that I hunt is doing the same thing that a vegan diet would do." I said " Me only eating meat that I hunt is doing the same thing that a vegan diet would do, in terms of supply and demand." Of course hunting does not fit into a vegan diet. But it does have the same impact on the meat industry, because I am not buying meat. The money I spend on hunting goes to the government.

> I'm really surprised you haven't factored in the cost of the gun, the ammo, your time, lodging, equipment, processing, transport, refrigeration...

Most of these costs are 1 time payments. As a vegan, I am sure you have spent money on cooking equipment, like knifes, blenders, cutting boards, dishwashers, bowls, ect. that are not included in the actual cost of being vegan.

Still, to answer your question I will give you some price range ideas. Almost all of my things are hand-me-downs, but let's pretend you are a new hunter.

Gun: $250 This is for a basic gun, but this is a 1 time payment and can last many lifetimes if cleaned after every use.

Ammo: $15 20 rounds can last 2+ seasons. A hunter who is careful about shot placement will use 4 rounds or less per hunt. 2 hunts a year, 2 and a half years worth of ammo. Costs can also be cut down by reloading.

Time: Most hunters go hunting 2-3 days before the season starts to go camping. Hunting trips are more like camping trips than you realize. Most hunters, my self included, love to spend their time hunting. The time spent hunting is positive for most people.

Travel: If you are an out of state hunter, it gets costly, yes. In state hunting, travel can be extremely short. My elk camp is 6 hours away, so yeah there's that. But my deer hunting camp is literally 10 minutes from me.

Lodging: $91 Another 1 time purchase that can last 15+ years if treated correctly. This tent is plenty big enough for 2-3 people. In the case of my deer camp, I sleep at home, for free.

Equipment: Not sure what this means. I mean for knifes you can get dirt cheap ones any where. You could even use a kitchen knife. Food is typically the same price as it would be if I went to a grocery store to eat at home. Knifes are also 1 time purchase things.

Processing: $4 I mean, other than butcher paper and a meat grinder this is free. You can pay to have a butcher do it for you, but it is impracticable for cost savings.

Transport: Biggest cost really. Depends on where you are hunting. I mean you spend money on gas going camping or on a vacation, and since hunting is really just that, it doesn't really matter to me.

Refrigeration: I have 3 freezers, so this wasn't really a cost for me, but you can find cheap used fridges for less than $100. This is another 1 time purchase.

So all together: Less than $700 for all costs. These are all one time costs that only need to be payed for once. Let's say transportation is another $200 a year. That is still less than $1 per pound of meat. Obviously you are not successful every year, which I guess could add to costs, but the point of hunting isn't to kill something every year. It is to get out into the woods and make an attempt to feed your family.

u/redwoodser ยท 1 pointr/DIY

If I wanted to have that sink operational, I would buy this table, or one like it. I actually have this exact table in my backyard, and screwed on top of it a butcher block table top for a work bench with a vise. Itโ€™s exceptionally sturdy and strong and rot proof. It would make a great base for your sink. You would just need to cut a hole in the stainless top for your drain. And also bolt something like 2 pieces of wood on to the table top, over which the sink would rest, to prevent it from moving about. That thing must weigh at least 100 pounds. Good luck.

u/NocturnalFish ยท 2 pointsr/mead

It's for this reason that I, and most others here, will recommend the use of buckets for the primary fermentation. Especially when fruit is involved. This allows you easy access to stir, manage the fruit cap, and add nutrients. Additionally, your mead needs oxygen during the initial stages of fermentation which makes a bucket ideal. For my 1 gallon batches I use 2 gallon buckets. This way I have enough volume post-primary to minimize headspace in my secondary.

This is coffee land, where we like coffee more than we like artificial flavorings. Those flavored beans are a kind of herpes for coffee gear, with flavors that never quite leave the machine.

But if you are into that sort of thing, you can get him some syrup and a pump and let him tweak his coffee to his heart's content in the cup.
