I live in a 230sqft studio and I have my bed on a FOLDABLE metal platform (https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Foldable-Platform-Under-Bed-Storage/dp/B073WRF565) , I also have it on risers so that I can put my storage bins underneath (ie extra blankets, winter gear, camping gear, etc) As for a mattress, I have a Nectar mattress. I also used to sleep on the floor lol I didn’t have any issues with it but it took up a lot of space that I didn’t have at my studio.

I have a couch that is also a futon for guests and it also came in a box so if I need to move again, I I could easily break it down to fit it in my hatchback. (https://www.amazon.com/Novogratz-Brittany-Sofa-Futon-Linen/dp/B01LY1WBQN) it looks expensive, a little on the firm side but still comfortable with the right pillows. I got it on prime day for $200 😅

I don’t have a closet but I have an ikea wardrobe. It’s small and has allowed me to downsize on my clothing.

I also have this coffee table that looks pretty good and the legs can fold down and I can put it away if I need more space. (https://www.amazon.com/AZUMAYA-Folding-Coffee-Center-TAC-229/dp/B0077HY08M)

I have this one in my van and it's awesome. Very firm, but a mattress topper would do fine for people who don't like their bed as firm as I do.

I built an interlocking frame for it - slides out for the bed, slides in with the side against the wall for a couch. Inspired by (but simpler than) this one:

http://vandogtraveller.com/expanding-bed-for-van/

Futons and pull-outs are totally different. Pull-out couches have light, super thin pads that don't do anything. Generally very uncomfortable. Futon mattresses are (or should be; mine is and my parents have a similar one) very heavy, very dense, and very firm. They're awesome beds.

I have this sofa futon in my apartment and I really like it. Haven't had anyone sleep on it yet though, haha. The look is great and setup is easy. That said, it's not the most luxurious couch ever, but it's got a firmness to it that I don't mind and can be remedied if necessary with throw pillows.

Anyways, just another option to look at! The one you linked is pretty decent looking as well.

Thank you! He's been making such leaps and bounds in growing up, but he hasn't regressed or pushed back about anything, so I don't think we're going too fast. He even loves his own room, although he has ended up in my bed at some point after midnight every time so far. It seems like he might be falling out of bed and that's what is waking him up, so maybe mattress rails will fix it. His bed was previously pushed against ours but he'd still fall out on the other side every now and again.

>What is a foldable mattress? I mean it seems obvious, but I've never seen such a thing?

I just stumbled across them since we're not quite ready to move 18m to his own room but I want my floor space back. Technically they are futon mattress that go on the floor. I'm looking at this one, but I'm not sure of it yet. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UMD881S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fEJxDbJB7YARG

I like the idea of being able to use it as a "spare bed" once they're both in their room for real, too.

u/dumbcollegekid · 3 pointsr/malelivingspace

As an alternative, you could try a futon. After a borderline-psychotic amount of research I actually went with a walmart futon for my small living room and I love it. It has multiple back/arm positions, doubles as a guest bed, and it's pretty comfy. It was $139 I believe. After a few months of daily usage it's still in great shape.

Just throwing it out there. Your space looks dope btw.

>By that standard do you also go into the forest and saw your own wood to build your own bed lol

what standard? do most Japanese people build their own furniture?

have you heard of amazon?

https://www.amazon.com/YAMAZEN-ESK-751-Casual-Kotatsu-Japanese/dp/B00F2C31AM

https://www.amazon.com/Nishikawa-Reversible-Kotatsu-Futon-Square/dp/B005SAKAHA

i mean i like the concept and all looks comfy but the reality is that desing its purely base on Japans city's especial need's and culture this simple won't work on America (and i mean the continent, not only the us) as we don't have the need to clear space on a daily basis.Still looks cool though.

Back in undergrad I went through two of these because they were what was commonly available at local futon stores, and they both ended up breaking or bending, etc. They got quite a lot of heavy use - I was folding/unfolding them every day, friends would come over and sit on them while watching TV, etc. Finally I got an unfinished "Super E-Z Futon Frame" (link 1)(link 2) and it was incredibly sturdy and durable. The unfinished frame itself isn't fancy, but you also don't see much of it, and you can stain it whatever color you like if you've got the time and motivation.

My cats claw allll my furniture, so I buy a new one of these once a year when it starts to look like an awful scratching post:

https://www.amazon.com/Homegear-Modern-Leather-Convertible-Seater/dp/B00XMXGP3S?th=1&psc=1

Cheap, easy to assemble, looks really nice with my minimalist set up in the living room, and is actually comfortable to sleep on.

Has an issue with pen detection (a lot of them do), other than that it works fine. Have a couple cases to toss in with it.

Hey thanks for responding.

Actually ended up getting Classic Brands Classic 8-inch mattress (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073V5RM24?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf) is very comfy so far. Only had it a few weeks but girlfriend and I are happy with it

u/badaimarcher · 1 pointr/financialindependence

I bought a cotton futon mattress because it was cheap, and I could fit a California queen in the back of a Honda Civic. As back-sleeper, it has actually become the most comfortable mattress I have used.

u/quigley0 · 1 pointr/audiophile

Futon is a good idea. I was thinking something like this, but not sure if this would be good for a listening position for speakers; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001IMM4XK

u/sanfran54 · 3 pointsr/minimalism

I used a futon frame similar to this for several years when I live in a place your size. I thought it was very versatile. As for the mattress itself ? Well, I'm one of the few people that can sleep on anything, so the fact that I used an inexpensive futon mattress and it didn't bother me might not be valid for you. Maybe someone here can help more.

Want: Weighted blanket to help with night time anxiety and stress! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B4V473Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ErVQBbQ8ZC0PM

Need: A small couch for my apartment that I live in with my partner. We currently only have a chair and some cushions on the floor and we would love to be able to snuggle up on a couch together and watch movies (one of our favorite quality-time activities). Things have been very hard for us recently and it would be so nice to have something like this not only for us, but for when my momma comes to visit so she doesn’t have to sleep on the floor. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071XJNDVG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_BwVQBbVTQJR48

u/allday_EarlGrey · 1 pointr/minimalism

This is the one my husband and i are looking at. We are also moving out next year and want to get rid of our bed so I don’t have any experience with these yet but hopefully this helps somewhat.

u/iam1self · 9 pointsr/vandwellers

Low budget is also light weight... which directly effects mpg. So...

Super light weight here in an e150 window van.

One sheet of 3/4” ply cut to go across the back as a bed and a second cut to act as a shelf on the wheel wells. I have all flat sterilite tubs of different sizes for all my things nearly organized.

I bought on of these too It’s very comfortable for me and i have serious back problems.

I have a nice cooler that holds 20lbs of ice for 4 days and a Weber Portable grill I keep things very simple.

For toilets? I use it at the grocery store, cafe, job, or gym. I DO have an emergency bucket with dust free cat litter and a cut pool noodle in the event of a for real case of the poops. Never had to use it.

u/wtfitsyogurt · 2 pointsr/malelivingspace

I am so sorry! Look how identical yours is to the one on Amazon! I'm in the market to buy one similar and on a budget.

Do you use it just on the floor or do you have a frame for it, was thinking about grabbing one of these. Its a way cheaper option then a murphy bed.
