This is gonna be fun. :D

Start with the irons. They're the most important part of your bag, as you'll be using them on virtually 95% of all holes you play. Given that you don't want GI irons, I have a perfect suggestion that is still moderately cheap and newb-friendly: TaylorMade CB Forged. Approximately $550 for a solid, NEW set of forged irons. They're technically Cavity Back, which means they're technically GI irons, but they barely fit the bill. If you're uncomfortable with even the small amount of GI they offer, I suggest Mizuno MP-59's or the TaylorMade MB's. Either way, if you're going for a forged set, expect to pay nearly $1000 for them if they're new. Sorry, there's not much around it.

The second most important part of your game are your wedges. It's not necessary to get a full set of three, but I'd suggest at least two, a 54 or 56 and a 58 or 60. Virtually everyone suggests Titleist Vokeys, which will run you about $130 each, but you can pick up a Scratch Golf wedge set for $169, which comes with three wedges (you can also buy them seperately for around $60 each, if you prefer).

After that, I'd probably grab a cheapish 3w. Luckily, the RBZ line is quickly dropping in price. Here's a RBZ 3w for $180. Some people might shy away from the RBZ or Burner SF lines because of the clubs specs, but they're great clubs and come with a great price tag.

Outside of that, go out and find a putter under $100 that feels good in your hands, is aesthetically pleasing, and just gives you that feeling of confidence on the putting green. Even if it's just the practice green at your local superstore. I snagged a TaylorMade TM-180 for $70 and absolutely love it. Took me from about 2.4 ppr to about 1.9 literally overnight. Confidence on the green is everything.

Drivers are the tricky part, since there's so much to them. Unless you have a very fast swing speed (which you should be getting fitted, so you'll find out), I wouldn't suggest anything under a 10.5. 9.0, 9.5 are for people that really hit the ball hard, and are designed for maximum distance. However, if you can't compress the ball well enough through clubhead speed, you're going to lose yardage with the 9 or 9.5 compared to the 10.5 or even HT (high trajectory) drivers.

As for brands for drivers, as long as you're buying a known name, I wouldn't worry about it. TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping, Cleveland Golf, Adams - they all make great products. Even Mizuno makes good drivers, though nobody plays them. Drivers are mostly preference, what you hit well. Some people hate white drivers (TaylorMade Burner SF 2.0, RBZ or R11), some people love them. Some hate black, others love black.

One thing I will suggest with all of your clubs is to test everything extensively. I'm talking like ludicrously extensive. I was dreaming about different golf clubs for awhile. Loved every minute of it. When you go in for your clubs, tell them you want to be fitted for them. You'll get a huge discount on the fitting process if you're buying their clubs, usually, and it's something you need to do, regardless of what clubs you get.

I'm also going to say this, right now - unless you're looking to buy used, you WILL spend well over $1000. I've spent right at $1000 on my bag currently for the irons, putter, driver, 3w and bag. I still need wedges and a rescue hybrid. And I went cheap on irons ($400 for the Burner 2.0's), cheap on the woods (Burner SF 2.0 driver and 3w, $170 and $150 respectively), and got a refurb putter in mint condition for $70. It's craigslist, a lot of luck on ebay or a bigger pricetag, my friend. And here's my advice - don't skimp on your clubs, and save your receipts.

I'm no expert, that's for sure. It's a little hobby of mine. I've done well with some things, poorly with others.

[Warrior Forum] (http://www.warriorforum.com/) is a good place to start. It's a very active forum with lots of knowledge free for the taking.

[Digital Point Forums] (https://forums.digitalpoint.com/) are an excellent resource for learning about Search Engine Optimization.

I use Wordpress to power all of my affiliate sites. I write a little article, stick in some links, and get organic traffic to my sites. Again, I'm a little guy. I'm not going to tell you that I make thousands a month doing this. Could I? Sure, if I applied myself and went after it, I could get there. It was easier years ago when you could throw up a garbage site and get immediate attention from the search engines. Now, you have to work a bit harder for it.

My advice: start with something you know and love. Do you have a hobby? Is your line of work suited to affiliate marketing integration? What do you know about that you can write about? Start a blog, even a free one somewhere. Throw out links via Twitter. Get a Facebook page going around your area of interest. Make some YouTube videos about your passion. Maybe you like reviewing golf clubs? Can you write a few hundred words about the latest Callaway driver? Great! Now you can throw up [this link] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009TLZJ48/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B009TLZJ48&linkCode=as2&tag=teaccom-20) to the Callaway driver on Amazon and maybe send a reader/buyer to it. It retails for $204. Depending on your volume, you could get 4-10% of that sale price returned to you every time somebody buys the driver you promote. That's $8-$20 for every buyer who reads your site and completes a purchase at Amazon. Best part, they don't even have to buy the driver. They could buy some [Flax Seed] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WSK5N2/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000WSK5N2&linkCode=as2&tag=teaccom-20) to kick up their morning oatmeal and you will get paid so long as your 24-hr cookie is still on their computer at the time.

And Amazon is just one of a million affiliate programs out there. I could link you to many more, but just google "company affiliate program", where company = company of your choosing, i.e. apple, best buy, newegg, hostgator, etc, and you should get to the program of your interest. Some sites farm out their affiliate programs to affiliate marketing companies that handle all of the tracking and payment for the sales you generate. Examples include PepperJam, Commission Junction (now Conversant), and LinkShare.

Of course, you can throw up some ads by Google Adsense alongside your affiliate links to get a little money based on clicks and pageviews that do not require any purchase.

That's a general overview. Do you have anything specific I can help you with?

If you're really casual (Like you only play a couple times a year at most with friends and its a social thing), then quite honestly you might be ok with one of those "complete sets". Callaway Strata or Adams Tight Lies

If you want to start getting into the game, going to the driving range on your own, getting lessons, and playing regularly - then we can start hunting for some decent used sets to start off with, or some clones. Unless you are driving the ball 250 yards, or have a fast swing / fast tempo - then a regular shaft will be good to start with. From there we can scour websites, auctions, etc. to piece together a set fairly inexpensively. That way, when you start getting your swing together, you will start to get an idea of what you want/need and start replacing clubs these initial clubs with ones that fit your game.

So, if it were me: I would either get one of the complete sets (if you're really casual and just need a set to play with your buds a couple times a year), Or get a used 3w, a used 5w, a clone 5-pw set (This GigaGolf set is less than $100 right now), a used 50 gap wedge, a used 54 or 56* sand wedge, and find a putter you like. All regular shafted (wedges and putters you don't need to worry about flex, they are uniflex in most cases). If you are comfortable with a driver (ie you don't just slice it into the woods all day), then by all means grab one as well.

Also Check out CamelCamelCamel

It's pretty much like Hukkster, but does an Amazon search for a product, instead of a particular store.

Create Amazon price watches and get alerts via email and Twitter when prices drop.

Here's an example:

I went to the website and put in R1 driver and hit search. It pulled up a bunch of R1 drivers from Amazon. I clicked on and it came up with This Page, which allows you to put in your desired price and email that you will use to be notified. You can search Amazon, 3rd party New, and 3rd Party used.

The cool thing is that it keeps a price history on that particular product. That page shows that the R1 driver dropped in price on May 24th from $399 to $349 ($50). I like charts and grafts, so I think it's cool.

I started the same way you did started with a set of clubs about 25 years old then once i realized how much i liked golf i upgraded to these and love them. it also comes in a 16 and 18 piece set the bag is also very nice which makes it worth it. The irons are all very consistent with a nice sweet spot once you get your form down and i personally fell in love with the 5 hybrid (my dad doesnt like it) The driver is very nice too i learned on this set and after playing about 6 months i can drive about 250yds.

u/itsonlyastrongbuzz · 9 pointsr/NavyBlazer

Can't build a new bag without a bag. So a Sun Mountain C-130 cart bag with 15 dividers in U-S-A. So that's sitting at home waiting to be stuffed. (rimshot)

Driver - Cobra King F7+ Driver in Blue. (Regular Flex) Should get that one tomorrow. I'd love to get a Cobra Commander decal or headcover.

Fairway - Cobra King F7 Fairway Wood in Blue (Regular Flex) Also should get tomorrow. This one I'd love a Shelby Cobra headcover.

Hybrid - Probably round out the Cobras with a King F7 hybrid. That one would be the Cobra Gunship since it's probably in rough/ in combat.

Irons - Callaway Steelhead XR trying those out today. 4-AW, Steel Shaft/Regular Flex. Going to swing some of these after work and pull the trigger.

Wedge - I have a Wilson Harmonized 60° that I fucking love. I call it the scalpel. I've holed out three times from between 10-45 yards with it. For literally buying something cheap to replace a SW I left behind during a drunken round, the thing is surgical and I highly reccomend them. I'd probably need a 54° to round it out. Maybe a Mack Daddy or two. I dunno.

Putter - Cleveland - Huntington Beach precision milled blade putter. Gonna need to basically sleep with this one to get to know it better. Ordered it it's own headcover for good luck. That one should come tomorrow too.

Stayed patient and found some pretty awesome deals for everything. Really wanted the Titelist AP1 716 irons but they never came down in price like I hoped.

Either way, I'm beyond excited to spray balls everywhere with zero consistence but with brand new clubs.

u/MinuteOfAngle · 1 pointr/golf

Those look rather old. I found a more modern set by Falcon called the Fireblade and it seems like they are primarily sold in the UK. If you need clubs tomorrow and thats all you can find they should at least be able to get you on the course. If you had more time you could certainly do better than that set for the money. I would probably up the budget to 150-200 and get a starter set from Intech, Goden Bear, Wilson, PineMeadow or whatever brand your local big box store stocks. Something like this $189 Callaway Strata set or this $119 Confidence set or this $166 Wilson set are all miles better technology and quality wise especially if you plan to keep playing after this event.

I remember having a Falcon brand bowling ball 15+ years ago, if I had to take a guess they were a low end sporting good manufacturer for a few years and then were sold off or changed names.

From another perspective, it might be worth it just for the putter. Looks like an older BeCu Anser.

Edit: I had a look at the search results for golf clubs on craigslist for your area and in the same price range the Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, and Acuity sets are all much better options that the set you posted.

Amazon is probably the easiest at around $100, but I always see people selling them second hand as well. We got lucky here and received some hand me downs from a generous neighbor who’s kids outgrew them.

Degrees are a specific way of measuring the loft of a club. Every 60 wedge has 60 of loft (duh). The loft on the "named" clubs loosely corresponds with degrees, but it varies by manufacturer and even product line.

So a pitching wedge is generally between 44 and 48. A sand wedge is generally 54 or 56. A lob wedge is generally anything higher than a SW (58, 60, 62 or 64). A gap wedge (sometimes an approach wedge) makes up the "gap" between PW and SW, so usually between 48 and 52.

With that said, a trend now especially in iron sets for high-handicappers is to decrease the loft on clubs without changing the name. My first set of clubs was an SGI set (super game improvement, very forgiving and marketed at beginners or weekenders) and my PW was 44. That created a huge gap between my PW and my SW at 56. So I needed a gap wedge. I also like to play with a lob wedge for close around the greens, but it's not a necessity.

You can see the lofts of your clubs if you just google [set name lofts]. If those are Nike SQs, the lofts are here: Amazon.

If the highest loft club you have is the AW at 50, you might consider getting a SW or LW. Otherwise anywhere inside about 100 yards and you're going to have to take half or quarter swings with that AW.

I bought my wife these last year: Wilson Women's Hope Complete Golf Package Set (Right Hand, Graphite DR, Graphite FW, Steel Hybrid and Irons, Ladies, D, FW, H, 6-SW) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AWOUK3G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Yj0wxbP0QH3RV

They have been great, she can hit the driver 150 (she also started playing last year), the irons are nice, the hybrid and 3w are great. I would think that they could get you 2-3 years, and probably resell for $75, so you're looking at a $110 investment for a few years of use.

I doubt you'll be disappointed. After playing a lot as a teenager then resorting to 2-3 times every couple of years and this year deciding to pick it back up, I took a lot of time before I bought this set. (my junker clubs got stolen) They are not the best clubs you will buy but they are a nice set. For $200 to get everything you need. I upgraded my irons to Ping G30's on a labor day weekend sale and if I had it to over again I would just keep the Strata's. Not because the G30's are bad. They are great and I love them. It's just that the clubs aren't holding me back, it's me. I still use the Driver, 3, 4h, 5h, SW, bag and really like them. You asked for a starter set at a decent price. That set is designed to be an entry point into golf. If you can get a set used you should do that, but for $200 those will be at your house in 2 days. I've never seen a bad review from anyone. Those that complain aren't arguing it from the viewpoint of someone looking for an entry level set. This is the I want to play golf but there are too many options set.

u/print1n · 2 pointsr/golf

For a budget starter set with everything, I've heard good things about these.

It doesn't matter what you get when you first start, the important thing is that you start. Get anything. Be patient, practice, learn from others, ask questions, and enjoy the game. Don't get caught up in brand names for the time being or if RBZ irons are going to be better for you that MP-54s. Just get out there, have fun, and play.

u/Ozznato · 3 pointsr/golf

You don't have any budget listed here, so I'll just throw out my perspective since last year was my first real foray into golf. I was gifted this set for my birthday in April last year, and played the past year about 2-3 times a week with it up until November. For $200 you're getting a Callaway starter set that will do probably exactly what you want it to, and have everything you need (bag, driver, hybrids, etc etc) to get you started. Is it a stellar set? absolutely not, but it will certainly get the job done.

So, right within the budget you have hinted at in your post given other sets, you're getting a set from a big brand. With that, I would throw the rest of your money at lessons and a pair of shoes if you're planning on playing a lot.

For a little bit of insight from my end, I played with this stock bag until October, when I got a new Driver, and then in December I got some new fairway woods and a new wedge. I probably didn't need the Driver, but I found that my game had benefited from the improved equipment. I can shoot 115-90 on any given day, broke 90 once, but never ended up taking any lessons (which I do regret, and will look into for next year).

If I were to do it all over again, I'd get the same set as above as a starter, spend about $150 on lessons, and then in the last few months of the season, if you've found yourself improved, reward yourself with a new club, even if its a used one. This way you know you can look forward to a new toy in your bag, without putting too much skin in your club game.

u/kryonickraken · 2 pointsr/golf

I got these as a gift.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000IUWLNG?pc_redir=1396670963&robot_redir=1

If you have never played good name brand wedges then they will be fine. I had one good Cleveland wedge in my set so didn't care for the grinds on these. I like tinkering so I did my own customs grinds, did a gun blue finish, and threw on some good grips. I love them now.

u/chordnine · 4 pointsr/golf

I was in your EXACT position about 4 months ago. I'm developing my golf game and can't yet justify a large investment. I got the Calloway Strata 13-piece set and have been very pleased with the results. 4-5 Hybrid, 6-PW irons, 3 wood and driver. Decent walking bag does the job.

$189.99, 4.3 out of 5 stars, with free shipping from Amazon.

Good luck!

u/JR_Ray · 2 pointsr/golf

My preference would be that all of your clubs are they same make/model. This is mainly for consistency purposes as the lofts of different clubs aren't the same across the set. One manufacturer's 7 iron may be 34 degrees another's may be 37. This creates yardage gaps between clubs that aren't consistent. I play every week to a 5 handicap and I've been debating getting rid of my 4 iron for a year now. Spend the $250 dollars and get a set of clubs that you can play with as you improve. If you get really hooked then you can worry about spending money and getting "custom" fit. If you really just want something to hit around with your pops look at something like this. Remember that hybrids are your friend.

u/RdmGuy64824 · 2 pointsr/golf

I recently bought a Pinemeadow 64 degree wedge for $10 bucks on amazon just because it was so cheap and well reviewed. I'm actually really impressed.

They have full sets that are really cheap and well reviewed: http://www.amazon.com/Pinemeadow-Golf-Set-Driver-Hybrid-Regular/dp/B007LO34HO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1427137688&sr=8-2&keywords=pinemeadow

They're good for a person who still doesn't know if he's gonna stick with the sport. I am a beginner too and I know I should have bought this instead of buying some blades for 50 dollars.

Furthermore, you could obtain great iron bargains at 2ndswing.

u/Rob_035 · 1 pointr/golf

On a shoestring budget you’ll have to know that you probably won’t get the latest and greatest clubs, but you can certainly still get some sticks that’ll work.

Keep in mind the recurring costs of the game with your $140 initial budget (balls namely, tees to a lesser extent, green fees etc.)

There are some box sets of clubs that are pretty cheap. Wilson, Nitro, for example.

You can also try and piece together a set from goodwill, lots of people donate their older clubs and they sell them back for pennies on the dollar.

u/iamproph · 1 pointr/golf

When my brother started, we picked up a full set off Amazon. They aren't great, but if you hit a quality shot the ball goes where it should. As he slowly got better, we added in new clubs one at a time (first a real driver, then some nice wedges, etc).

on top of what /u/bl1ndvision said, FYI a complete rule-compliant set consists of 14 clubs max. Usually people do 3 iron-Pitching Wedge (Pw) (which is 3,4,5,6,7,8,9, PW) and Driver, Putter, 3-wood/5-wood, and a couple of wedges. Since 3 irons, and even 4 irons are difficult to hit, you could switch those out with a 3 hybrid/4 hybrid. The Strata set by Callaway generally seems to be recommended around here for a completely new set for beginners. Many will recommend you search ebay to piece together a used setup.

Just bought these myself : http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007LO34HO/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1373560853&sr=1-1&pi=SL75
Not a complete set as it doesn't come with bag or putter. I'm just getting back into golf and I've played 3 times with these so far and I love them. They are clones of Taylormade Rocketballz. For $130 its a steal as far as I'm concerned.

I bought this putter when I was drunk on amazon one night and I love it. Eventually threw a superstroke on it.

came here to say this. I just picked up one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Pinemeadow-Golf-Mens-Putter-Right/dp/B008JO4SHK and put one of these grips on it: http://www.winngrips.com/putter-grips/winnpro-x-132.

So much better than my old blade that came with my starter set.

also bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011QMJIH6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I liked the name and it was on sale. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I used to use an old set of dunlop diamond max, and the face was kinda small, and used an old wood driver

Callaway Men's Strata Complete Golf Club Set with Bag (12-Piece) is only $135. Seems to be a well received starter set.

u/crashXCI · 2 pointsr/golf

Agreed. For reference, $137 at time of posting

I have never played with this Wilson set but I bought this Strata set from Callaway and they have been very solid for me and also cheaper in price. I started golfing about 4 years ago and still have these as my main clubs. I am currently looking to upgrade to some more expensive clubs as I am starting to get a little more serious.

Not really a Prime Day deal and I know we don't really like these bundled sets, but the Callaway Strata 12-piece set is at it's low of $125. Might be good for that someone not sure about committing to golf.

You can get a complete Callaway set w/ a bag brand new on Amazon but I guess it depends on what 'decent' means to you.
