Almost everyone uses them here in Australia. Very few people carry and even less ride in a cart. If I had to put a number on it I would say 97+% of golfers use a push cart or electric push cart. I don't really understand why people in the US don't like them.

The cheapest option is one of these two wheel carts. I used on for a while and it gets the job done but it's nowhere near as good as a three wheeled cart. The next step up would be a cheap three wheel which you can get for about $75. The main issue with these is build quality, you will only get a year or two out of them from what I've seen.

Best for the money would be the Caddytek EZ-Fold which is between $100-150. It comes with all the features you need including a cooler bag and lots of storage and is well built. The best is arguably the Clicgear 3.5 which comes in at around $220. The build quality is slightly better than the Caddytek and it's easier to get replacement parts/accessories for. Down side is extra $100 for the cart and it doesn't come with a cooler bag which runs about $40 for the clicgear one.

Personally I went with the caddytek because of the price and I'm happy with it. If price is an issue I would recommend going for the caddytek ez fold as a minimum it's streets ahead of the cheap two/three wheelers.

Hope I'm not too late but I found some golf stuff in your price range that your dad may like. This tee set or maybe this one or this ball set. This marker set is nice for when hes playing or maybe these covers, this golf shirt, or this organizer. If you want to spend a little bit more theres always this putting mat for his house. This wallet isn't golf related but I bought my SO a hockey related one for Christmas and its really nice. Hope I could help! If I win I'm dying for these pans

Also Check out CamelCamelCamel

It's pretty much like Hukkster, but does an Amazon search for a product, instead of a particular store.

Create Amazon price watches and get alerts via email and Twitter when prices drop.

Here's an example:

I went to the website and put in R1 driver and hit search. It pulled up a bunch of R1 drivers from Amazon. I clicked on and it came up with This Page, which allows you to put in your desired price and email that you will use to be notified. You can search Amazon, 3rd party New, and 3rd Party used.

The cool thing is that it keeps a price history on that particular product. That page shows that the R1 driver dropped in price on May 24th from $399 to $349 ($50). I like charts and grafts, so I think it's cool.

Those look rather old. I found a more modern set by Falcon called the Fireblade and it seems like they are primarily sold in the UK. If you need clubs tomorrow and thats all you can find they should at least be able to get you on the course. If you had more time you could certainly do better than that set for the money. I would probably up the budget to 150-200 and get a starter set from Intech, Goden Bear, Wilson, PineMeadow or whatever brand your local big box store stocks. Something like this $189 Callaway Strata set or this $119 Confidence set or this $166 Wilson set are all miles better technology and quality wise especially if you plan to keep playing after this event.

I remember having a Falcon brand bowling ball 15+ years ago, if I had to take a guess they were a low end sporting good manufacturer for a few years and then were sold off or changed names.

From another perspective, it might be worth it just for the putter. Looks like an older BeCu Anser.

Edit: I had a look at the search results for golf clubs on craigslist for your area and in the same price range the Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, and Acuity sets are all much better options that the set you posted.

I don't want to turn the free talk into a yard sale but I won a super nice push cart at a golf outing this summer (longest drive nbd). Definitely never gonna use it. I know there are lots of golfers on here (or buy it for your dad for xmas). $83.99 retail. https://www.amazon.com/CaddyTek-SuperLite-Deluxe-Golf-Push/dp/B00CFGUL2E?th=1

I know of some carriers who use these. The Original Chill Pal PVA Cooling Towel (Aqua Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MLGB3N4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_G299ybET1PVE0

They have two, one dry and one wet. Have a cooler with water/ice in it and dunk the wet towel in the cold water and keep it around your neck. Use the dry one to dry off any overly wet areas.

Personally I usually just drink 2-3 liters of water a day and occasionally pour water on me. I sweat like crazy and with out pouring water on myself, I look like I jumped in a pool pretty early on the day.

Also remember that taking a break to cool down is a comfort stop and is NOT counted towards your ten minute breaks or your lunch. It's a safety issue. If you have a library, church, gas station, or something of the like swing in there and cool off. You can not get in trouble for working safely.

I love these. A friend at work gave me a sleeve two seasons back and I'm still playing them. They're a great ball for a great price -- http://www.amazon.com/Wilson-Staff-Golf-Balls-White/dp/B006M46TDU.

You don't have any budget listed here, so I'll just throw out my perspective since last year was my first real foray into golf. I was gifted this set for my birthday in April last year, and played the past year about 2-3 times a week with it up until November. For $200 you're getting a Callaway starter set that will do probably exactly what you want it to, and have everything you need (bag, driver, hybrids, etc etc) to get you started. Is it a stellar set? absolutely not, but it will certainly get the job done.

So, right within the budget you have hinted at in your post given other sets, you're getting a set from a big brand. With that, I would throw the rest of your money at lessons and a pair of shoes if you're planning on playing a lot.

For a little bit of insight from my end, I played with this stock bag until October, when I got a new Driver, and then in December I got some new fairway woods and a new wedge. I probably didn't need the Driver, but I found that my game had benefited from the improved equipment. I can shoot 115-90 on any given day, broke 90 once, but never ended up taking any lessons (which I do regret, and will look into for next year).

If I were to do it all over again, I'd get the same set as above as a starter, spend about $150 on lessons, and then in the last few months of the season, if you've found yourself improved, reward yourself with a new club, even if its a used one. This way you know you can look forward to a new toy in your bag, without putting too much skin in your club game.

u/wutzhapnin · 2 pointsr/golf

I use only real balls. I find any ball that is not real but made of foam or whatever to be kinda like hitting a marshmallow. Sure, you can crush it but it just doesn't feel right.

That said, make sure your net setup has redundancy (sides and back), you'll s**** at least one ball every once in a while, and ALL nets can and likely will get a hole in them. Or, just stop caring about the garage walls and the cars and such trivial things!

Last, don't skimp too much on the mat. But if you're on a tight budget, you can buy a high-quality mat strip like this and build a platform (mine was plywood+old carpet) around it: Real Feel Golf Mat 10X30 strip

A lot of people doubt whether it works real well, but when I looked at it I thought it would work. Some guy on youtube used one to get his swing speed up to 131 this summer - you may want to look for that thread - he has like 15 videos up of him doing it. Good luck.

My preference would be that all of your clubs are they same make/model. This is mainly for consistency purposes as the lofts of different clubs aren't the same across the set. One manufacturer's 7 iron may be 34 degrees another's may be 37. This creates yardage gaps between clubs that aren't consistent. I play every week to a 5 handicap and I've been debating getting rid of my 4 iron for a year now. Spend the $250 dollars and get a set of clubs that you can play with as you improve. If you get really hooked then you can worry about spending money and getting "custom" fit. If you really just want something to hit around with your pops look at something like this. Remember that hybrids are your friend.

u/psycos · 1 pointr/golf

Yes! I use this thing called "Blast Golf Replay" that eliminates the need for the remote shutter. Plus it measures swing speed and tempo, among other things. Very very cool, and with newer smart phones and 240 FPS recording, it's GREAT for seeing swing faults.

They're good for a person who still doesn't know if he's gonna stick with the sport. I am a beginner too and I know I should have bought this instead of buying some blades for 50 dollars.

Furthermore, you could obtain great iron bargains at 2ndswing.

u/Rob_035 · 1 pointr/golf

On a shoestring budget you’ll have to know that you probably won’t get the latest and greatest clubs, but you can certainly still get some sticks that’ll work.

Keep in mind the recurring costs of the game with your $140 initial budget (balls namely, tees to a lesser extent, green fees etc.)

There are some box sets of clubs that are pretty cheap. Wilson, Nitro, for example.

You can also try and piece together a set from goodwill, lots of people donate their older clubs and they sell them back for pennies on the dollar.

u/ashdrewness · 5 pointsr/golf

Right on. Casting is a super common cause of club head speed loss. Here's a slow-mo vid of my swing from a couple years back and you can clearly see me doing it. I started taking vids of my swing and I also bought a radar so I could make minor adjustments and see if they made a change. I don't have an after vid from this angle but after getting rid of the casting I gained about 5mph on my clubhead speed.

Edit: /u/amessofamind For a good example of not casting, this is a good vid of Phil. Check out the angle of the wrists and the shaft on the downswing and how late the shaft comes down.

The GustBuster 48" Umbrella would fit the bill nicely. Very sturdy, a handsome wooden handle, and a vented top to prevent getting turned inside out when the wind picks up. I have had one for two years now and it looks just the same as the day I bought it.

Definitely the Titlist NXT line. It's buttery off of the irons, spins off the wedges, and feels soft off of the putter. It doesn't curve in the air as much as a normal Tour Ball would either, only on command. You can get them for pretty cheap on Amazon. Another good ball is the Bridgstone e6, they feel soft on the irons too. and a cheap back-up ball that iv'e tried is, surprisingly enough, the Wilson Duo, which felt best off of the driver for me, and the feel off of my irons wasn't bad either but i didn't like it for short game that much.

I have owned the Sklz Quickster ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0047YQ2MK/ref=abs_brd_tag_dp?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER ),$110 and the Rukket SPDR ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00STRNQN4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ).

I kept the SKLZ and gave away the Rukket. The SKLZ was quicker/easier to put up & take down (kinda like a "quick pole" tent), lighter, more compact.

I love it. The net has held up, it's big enough that it takes a tremendous mis-hit to miss the net, and it's weathered a few rains when I've left it out.

Down sides, it needs pretty level ground to sit still in anything over a stiff breeze. There are stake holes but I never got around to using those.

You should get a proper hitting mat. One you stand on. I tried the smaller, cheaper, "stand in front" mats, but you're always practicing hitting on a slope that way. I mean, part of that is also probably advertising and brand name. I haven't heard anythinga bout the breaking 80 range finders, but I have heard that Nikon makes a good one. The Coolshot 40 is a higher end model, but still less expensive then the bushnell.

I use a Mesh Tarp: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200596408_200596408

Fold in half (or buy 2) because eventually you will put a hole in it, but then you can re-fold (rotate) for a new spot. You will want to weight the bottom. The tarp is cool because you can see where the ball impacted (leaves a little dent).

I owned one of the top-rated hitting nets and put holes in two of them. I don't trust manufactured hitting nets for home use any more.

Also, get a high-quality mat, even if it's just a strip (you can build a carpeted platform around it):

Looks like its a few panels of some cheap building material on the front screen. The back screen isn't particularly nice either.

Whole thing probably cost a little more than $1000, but not a ton. Major factor here is how much he chose to spend on the projector and if he did the frame himself/has a guy vs if he had to find a shop to make it for him.

Swing Speed Radar

I recently bought this and it's very accurate. If you do decide to get it, just put it at a 45 degree in front of you 6-10 inches away from the club. If you swing without a wiffle ball or an actual ball the speed will come up 5-10% slower than actual.

u/HardDriveGuy · 2 pointsr/golf

Inconsistent can mean long, short, right, left or not have the ability to hit the center of the face, and even with this information, it would be tough to say what you would need. It would also be nice to know if you are struggling on the practice range and/or on the course when you are with your buddies

With that being said, I might suggest getting Tom Wishon's "Search For A Perfect Driver" and perhaps a Swing Radar and impact labels to find out your real speed and impact on club face when you are not in front of other people. Tom is the industry's myth buster, and he points out that "stiff" shaft is often wildly different from company to company. He points out that most people are hitting clubs longer than the pro's use, with swing speeds much, much slower. Generally, he suggests short drivers, higher lofts (11-13 for most men), and true bend analysis of shaft (which only a handful of people do).

Once you have this gear, you can do some nice analysis outside of a golf shop, which is very artificial. Real world data should be more helpful. Let me explain how I use this data.

I often pack my Swing Radar down to the range, and I have impact labels for myself and my son (although my son is consuming most of the labels). As much as it bugs me, I normally swing 85 on the range when I'm working through a bunch of balls, and I'm guessing around 90 on the course (because of the distance). If I really crank the juice, I get into the high 90s or low 100s.

My problem is that I'm very accurate with my 80MPH swing, but I can't help but want to show off on the course with my 100MPH swing. The problem is that the 100MPH swing is wildly inconsistent. My sons inconsistency is based around the fact that he tends to miss the center of the driver. Thus he is using impact mark labels to fix this fault.

After reading Tom's book, I am convinced that I should be playing with a driver no longer than 44 inches (I'm around 6' 2"), and he points out that Tiger was using a 44.5 inch driver. When he tests people, almost all of them hit longer with a shorter driver. However, I notice that I tend to hook when I choke up, and I'm trying to work on my 3 iron right now, so length will need to wait.

Finally, I have spent a ton of time hitting with a Whippy Driver. This is driver with a shaft that like a wet noodle and almost hits you when you are at the top. I used to play rounds with the driver, but my friends complained that it was simply freaking them out that any driver would bend so much. (And eventually the shaft broke from number of impacts.) However, this driver forces a very smooth style. If you are really committed to fixing stuff, try hitting this exclusively for a few months.

The Caddytek Superlite is $87 shipped right now, but was a little cheaper when I bought it.

I picked it up because it was the cheapest folding push cart I could find that didn't have a ton of negative reviews. My two (small) complaints are:

  1. The umbrella mount works well in the rain, but not so much when there's wind. The body of the cart is sturdy enough for regular abuse, but with a giant umbrella acting like a sail it tends to twist.
  2. The drink holder is at a strange angle, which spills very full beverages. Solution: drink faster!
