(Part 2) Reddit mentions: The best gun & ammunition storage & safes

The Glock 19 is the universal recommendation for a first gun because it is relatively cheap, extremely reliable, and is small enough to conceal while still being large enough to easily control.

That said, if you know with 100% certainty that your first gun is strictly going to be for home defense, I would recommend going larger. Larger guns are easier to control as there is more mass to absorb recoil and you get a larger sight radius (his is of course assuming the caliber stays the same). The Glock 17 is the larger, more home defense appropriate, version of the Glock 19. The Glock 34 is even larger still but at that point you are getting into competition gun territory (was literally built for IDPA) so that may be a bit much for home defense.

You'll also want to think about other factors like ergonomics; a Glock is fine but there is a good chance there is another 9mm that will fit your hand better. The Smith and Wesson M&P 9 is a comparable alternative that can also come with an external safety. The Ruger Security 9 is another option to look for that comes in a few hundred cheaper than a Glock. You may even find that metal offerings like a CZ-75B or Beretta 92FS feel better to you than a polymer double stack. Again there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Glock 19 but you might find the other guns fit your hand better. Ideally you would go to a gun range to rent so you could try before you buy.

What ever you go with, make sure the wife is fine with it as well. No I don't just mean that from a budget point of view; if you both went to class then she has to be just as comfortable using the firearm as you are. If anything it is even more important that the spouse is comfortable with the gun than you are as she may need to use it when you aren't around.

You seem fine with the range bag, eye/ear protection, and maintenance supplies so that seems good.

For kids I would recommend educating them to remove the mystic about firearms as well as a good wall mounted pistol safe for storage. I'm personally a fan of the Shotlock mechanical handgun safe as a mechanical tends to be more reliable than digital (for that price range) and you can bolt it above your night stand for easy access.

I don't see any specific recommendations for a safe, so wanted to make two specific ones. I have used and love both. Both are simplex style locking systems.

  • Box-style; good to have it sit in one place. Holes in the bottom so you can screw it into the floorboards if you want (get it into joists). Surprisingly heavy duty for its size.

  • Slightly lighter weight than the brute, with the ability to be chained to things. Can be used to store locked up in a car, for example. If you get a chain, get a heavy duty one and a heavy duty lock with a long ish loop, put the lock loop through both ends of the chain and the designated hole in the box (it should make sense once you see the box, so maybe get box and look at it before getting a chain).
    
    
    Simplex locks are very reliable, but they also have a finite number of codes. A clever person with a ton of time on their hands could exhaustively try all codes to get in eventually. So they are not foolproof (no safe is), so you need to bear that in mind and be vigilant.
    
    Both are excellent and I think nearly the best for your purpose. I'd actually lean towards the M200 for your purpose.
    
    Finally, as I'm sure many have said, a safe is not a set-and-forget thing if you have a child. You must also teach your child about dangers of firearms. (It sounds like this has been said plenty by others so I'll leave it at that).
    
    
    ps ALSO, a Ruger SP101s are excellent, high-quality firearms - you made a great choice for a revolver and should not experience the problems you describe. As others have indicated, Ruger customer service is some of the best in the business. Contact them and they should help you out.

I really like it. So far no issues with the fingerprint reader. It's a little loud when opening, but is big enough for 3 guns and a few extra magazines. It also has a little light that comes on when you open it.

FYI - they sell a "Mounting plate" but you probably don't need it. There are holes in the floor of the safe which you can use to mount it.

Thats why its useful to lock your door from the inside. You can use addition locks like this or just a chair wedged under the handle.

It takes about 30 seconds to pick the lock on even high end dead bolt locks. Consumer grade door security is garbage.

You can make bump keys, electric lock picks, manual picks, etc, etc. The locks on your door mean nothing to someone who understands how basic they are.

If you suspect someone is entering your house like this you can set traps to detect them. Place some small pieces of dust or "trash" like paper in windowsills where if someone came in and out they would disrupt it. Remember or write down the exact positions of these items. Similarly, when you leave your house reach inside the door and place a small piece of trash right behind the door so if its opened the trash will be blown or otherwise moved from the position you remember placing it in. Carefully open the door and check your trap when getting home. They might see the trap but it doesn't matter, they already triggered it and you will know no matter what that someone was there.

Make sure you know how to swing it well. If I saw someone with a bat it wouldn't really make me hesitate and in fact would just make me think they were focusing too much on the bat as a useful weapon when its really not, especially inside a house where you'll almost always not have room to generate power.

Make sure you bolt the safe down so your children don't get any ideas later on in life. Also, make sure you teach them gun safety before they're teenagers. The four rules. Treat all guns as if loaded. Never point a gun at something you wouldn't accept being destroyed. Know your target and what is beyond it. Finger off the trigger/out of the trigger gurd at all times until you want to shoot.

As for legal advice I think you're probably good since no one seems to have reported it.

I would say a good first step in preparing for SHTF is being able to keep all your mags full at all times. Keeping one of these full of loaded PMAGs gives you 450 rounds that are ready to go and easily portable. They make similar ones for pistol mags too.

As others have said, .22LR is a great choice for stockpiling too since it's cheap and light. I don't keep any .22 mags loaded up just because given my options it would be more of a long term choice vs the first guns I'd grab.

Not to that exact one, found it in the hunting goods section of WalMart for $8. I can say that my harness belt is 2" as well, and it fits perfectly. This was more or less what it was.

I should also mention that ammo boxes are a great way of storing AA batteries off your person. Most are cheap, waterproof, and hold around 50-100 batteries. This one has been the best $3 I've spent on organization in my life.

I'd recommend a Bushnell TRS25. Yeah it's a bit more expensive but it's miles ahead of any 'airsoft red dot'

You only need eye protection. I'd recommend face protection as well. You don't need a vest unless you need to carry stuff.

Edit: Looks like the X9 comes with a mid cap, not a hi-cap. You'll probably want a couple extra mags and something to carry them. Could get something like a Condor belt and SMG pouches

I'm in a constant state of preparation for shit that's never going to happen, but as soon as I'm not... It'll happen.

There's these really great plastic ammo storage boxes I got from Amazon to keep all my overflow medical supplies in. (No, I'm not a survivalist.) And now I have one that is full of extra/overflow/not use EDC stuff.

But lets be honest: You can never have too many cool little metal boxes, and clip hooks, battery cases, aircraft cable screw-loops, and on and on.

You'd think I'd grow out of it. But after working in LE, growing up in the country, years of camping and backpacking, day after day working in hospitals... You just know the Apocalypse is going to hit when your in the bathroom at a rest stop in the middle of the Sequoia National Forest.

Oh hah, It's a MTM ACR8-72 Ammo Crate. I wanted something strong with handles, not clear and would fit in a certain space in my closet. I already had a few MTM crates for my reloading supplies so figured I would get one for cigars.

Works pretty good so far

One thing that is worth considering for your husband is to carry a firearm while in the house. A comfortable OWB holster and a good belt places the loaded firearm in his direct control at all times. The other guns can then go into the safe.

If he's not inclined to do that for comfort reasons or just not wanting to carry in the house, there are numerous "quick access" vaults that can keep curious hands away without necessarily adding too much time for accessing the weapon. I would go for a mechanically actuated vault vs those electronic ones with buttons or fingerprint scanners. You don't want to be fumbling with electronics and sweaty fingers when time is of the essence.

Depending on the level of "readiness" that your husband wants to achieve, storing the firearms with loaded magazines but closed bolts/slides on empty chambers can add another layer of security/complexity towards discharging the firearms. Some may view it as a hindrance or something to forget in times of stress or injury, but it's worth considering all the options.

It's worth discussing with your husband the level of readiness he desires along with the element of risk that you both are willing to accept. Currently, it's pretty much grab-and-go from the closet. Does he move a gun closer to the bed when sleeping? If someone's trying to break in when everyone's around, is it a "honey go grab the gun" sort of situation? You already mentioned having to lock the bedroom door when family/friends are around. How does he feel about security when no one is home? While you live in a low crime neighborhood, most crimes happen during the day when most people are away. Also consider investing in upgraded/reinforced door frames, deadbolts, sliding doors, and windows. Those are elements that can buy you precious time in the hypothetical home intrusion to access the guns however they are stored.

Most importantly, make sure that you and your husband have a plan for such incidents. Make sure you know how to communicate with each other and have a plan for who goes where, does what, calls 911, etc. Might be worth stocking some basic first aid such as tourniquets and gauze as well.

It allows you to set your own combination for fast access. Mine is a quick 6 button pattern. I bought it because I have a curios 2 year old. I can get to this box and get my pistol ready within 10 seconds from anywhere in the house and am comfortable keeping it with one in the chamber so the wife can easily use it as well.

Mine is a little bigger. I store my shield in it with the extra mag and a silicone cloth for wipe downs with plenty of room. I recommend steering away from finger print scanning because it could take multiple scans for a read. And you never know, you could be trying to access it with blood covered hands...

Modified w/ 7.5 is perfect until you get a few rounds under your belt. Keep track of your performance -- and after 6-7 times out, you can try #8 shot, or a different choke. This way you can see if it is helping or hurting you.

You can try your hunting vest if it has large front pockets, but the problem with most vests is to me, they hold shells too high, and it can become clumsy especially when you pump (Since you have a 500). Granted, depending on how the tourney is set up, if you only need 4-5 shells on you at any one time, it could be more than fine. If you need to carry 20+ shells, I recommend a shooters bag like this one:

Pretty big, reasonably skookum. Not sure if it's big enough for your holster though, you'll have to check dimensions. Cable is long enough to lock under the back of the driver's seat (so it won't take out my ankles in a wreck) and still set it on top of the center console for access. Can fit my xds 3.3 in an aiwb holster plus some other stuff. Used it to fly commercial a couple times as well, had room for a box of ammo and magazines without the holster.

And you're absolutely right about keeping it in the holster. The less you fingerfuck your gun the better, especially when you might be in a hurry/tired/on autopilot

Those are the ammo cases. They come with the foam inserts already in there. I like them a lot. Another comment mentioned being able to store more in an empty case without the inserts, which is true. My OCD likes the neatness of these tho.

And yes, sand PMAGs that I rit dyed various colors.

I have this one from First Alert, and I recommend it. It's affordable, easy to access my firearm quickly in an emergency, and works reliably. My only complaints are the size, and sometimes the battery compartment cover falls off if I leave the safe open.

I'm saving up / wait for a sale to get this one from Hornady, though. Lots of great features and should work better in my vehicle.

I have some questions and related advice. Please answer some of my questions, and I'll check back later and give you more specific advice.

First, who is your outfitter? I went both times with Sierra Outfitters. They're great guys, and they have some fantastic spots.

Where are you going exactly? Up North, or down South?

bring a few thousand dollars in $20s and $100s Cash is king in Argentina, and US dollars are worth A LOT of Argentinian pesos. Try to figure out your budget for all of your expenses, and bring that + half in US dollars.

Are you bringing your own guns? Just don't. If you do, you will need the cash to bribe their version of TSA to get your paperwork signed off. $100 for the head chimp usually gets things moving smoothly.

Your flight and travel time will take longer than you can prepare for.

Tip your bird boys!They work hard, and get shit pay. It's also common courtesy to tip your bird boy. $100 to a birdboy is a months wage. Give him $100.

Bring ear pro, and a big pack of foam ear plugs as back-up. You will be shooting thousands of rounds a day. It is absolutely critical that you protect your ears.

Bring light-weight work gloves (mechanix) or a pack of accountant thimbles. If you are shooting thousands of rounds a day, you will also be reloading thousands of rounds. Protect your reloading thumb from getting raw and sore with a single rubber thimble, or wear gloves.

Bring a shell bag

Bring light-weight long sleeve shirts and long pants.They have mosquitos and nosee'm's (biting flies). Depending on where you will be, you should prepare for getting bit.

empty mag, put it in the box separately. Also, just get the ammo box that it came with (Cardboard is perfectly OK). You also need to be able to lock the case. I recommend getting a box that can you can attach a steel cable and loop it to(something like this) either the structure of the suit case.

Yeah, you're comparing a 5 day food supply to 30 day food supply. Even if we assume the extras are useful, it's not a good deal.

If you're worried about scratching your guns while moving them around, use gun socks. I store all of my guns in em to keep them from getting scratched up in the safe or while being moved around.

EDIT: Correction, some polish ammo comes in stripper clips. You're better off buying Russian/Romanian surplus ammo and buying the clips on the side, I've been using these pretty well.

Here is what I have done after not shooting clays for a LONG time:

• Buy expensive over / under shotgun
  
• Get out-shot by old guy with crappy semi-auto (I don't have anything against semi's but this thing was BEAT) and son with your own Ithaca pump
  
• Hang head in shame...
  
  But seriously:
  
  
• Familiarize yourself with any equipment, microphones, control box, trap house, etc. Ask lots of questions! Help with setup and take-down
  
• Buy a shell pouch like this one
  
• Put your full box of shells in the inside pouch after ripping the "lid" off
  
• When you are shooting take shells off one row at a time, easy to keep track of when you have shot 5 shots and should prepare to move to next station
  
• Load one shell at a time into open barrel / magazine / chamber
  
• Do not load the weapon until it is your turn to shoot (with a pump don't rack slide until your turn, o/u / semi don't close until your turn)
  
• Be very familiar with loading and shooting one round at a time from your gun and unloading if need be
  
• Try to keep pace with previous shooter, don't spend two minutes fumbling around for the next shell
  
• Take your turn starting in the #1 spot - see counting above - you will lead the move
  
• If NOT using a semi and you miss more than you hit put your hit clay "emptys" in your pocket to keep score, if you hit more than you miss put your missed clay "empties" in your pocket to keep score put whatever ones you aren't keeping in the outside of your pouch
  
• When making the move from #5 to #1 walk BEHIND the other shooters
  
• Keep your gun pointed at the ground or towards trap house at all times - having your shit together with the shells helps with this
  
• If you leave emptys laying around be sure to clean up after yourself
  
• When done shooting for the session, reload the clay thrower! Always leave it fully loaded and everyone is happy
  
  Advice for the kids:
  
  
• 4 rules above all else
  
• Emphasizing that this is a team sport, and that everyone needs to know how the flow is going to go and to figure out their personal "mechanics" for making ready, loading, shooting, un-loading, etc while always keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction
  
• As far as the shooting itself, I don't feel qualified to offer more than this:
  
• Keep both eyes open
  
• Have a fairly aggressive stance - no leaning back
  
• Make sure they are holding the shotgun firmly against their shoulder
  
• Follow the clay, don't aim at it
  
• Don't tense up / jar themselves by yelling "PULL!" a slower / softer "Puullll" is better but sometimes doesn't work with the auto throwers
  
• Consistent cheek weld! Same "picture" of the barrel / bead is important
  
• If they hit clays and then have a string of misses they are probably starting to dissect and analyze - similar to golf - this appears to be my downfall at the moment
  
• Watch out for flinching, run some drills where you load an empty into the gun without them knowing
  
• Teach them the joy of cleaning their guns!
  
• Be smooth, shoot fast!

I've got the Liberty 9G HDX-250 (~$200 on Amazon).

It has a key and a fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader works great. It runs off of a 9V battery, but if you have a nearby outlet, you can plug it in (9V then functions as backup power). I keep my daily CCW in this as well, and access it at least 2x per day with no issues.

Also, it can be bolted down if you want to for added security.

The Stack-On style stamped steel gun cabinets work just fine. While they aren't safes (they are never meant to be) they will keep your guns away from the kids so long as they don't have the key. Keeping them away from sneaky kids and people who wander off during your house parties are what gun cabinets are made for. The problem with cabinets and lock boxes is that people buy them assuming that theieves can't get into them. Its simply just not what they were designed for. They are designed for semi-supervised storage and to keep kids out. An adult with a crowbar is going to get into them with enough time. They aren't intended to be anti-theft safes. With enough time any thief will get them open with just a couple hand tools, but that goes for ANY lockbox or cabinet. Unless you got the money to spend 1500 bucks or more on a real safe then anything you keep your guns in will only have an attack rating of about ten minutes.

since you dont know the type of any of the componets you already have start from here. Start sticking to the loads listed and eventually you will learn what you can and cant change safely. A Lymans shotshell manual is great for learning process and tech information. It also has more load data than you can shake a stick at.

A firearm with a cable lock through it is not readily available.

Personally, I stage my AR empty chamber, bolt forward, safety on. One yank on the charging handle and I’m ready to rock. But then again, I have no children in the house and all who live here are trained in the use of the gun.

If you want to lock and have it readily available perhaps something like a ShotLock AR Vault is up your alley.

I have one of these that I use for securing when I need to leave a handgun in the car. Strong construction, and also has a decent cable for securing it to something. It won’t withstand a determined assault with power tools for long... but not many can - especially for less than 50 bucks

I have a 10 month old and have similar worries.

I got a sentry safe pistol box for my bedside storage just to keep it away the little one. It is a quick access combo lock and has a key backup in case the battery dies or you forget the combo.

If I had the cash I would probably go with fort knox box for the pistol though, they seem to be highly recommended.

As for the rifle I have seen one or two like this that are quick access, wall mounted options.

Would a shooters bag work for you? It is typically used for skeet/trap shooting, but I think you could fit about 10 beers in there. They're meant to carry a decent amount of weight (50 shells at least). I would use a cold pack though, it's not waterproof, so ice would be messy.

FWIW, they do make small safes that can be attached by a steel cable to the frame of your vehicle. I wouldn't expect it to stop a prepared and determined thief, but it'll deter the overwhelming majority of smash and grabs. Not perfect but better than nothing for someone that really feels like they need a gun. They also make a shotgun version that locks just around the trigger/action of the shotgun.

This might be ok if you live by your self, or in a house with all adults, or if the gun is kept unloaded...and this is in your bedroom...but then my initial reaction too was that it seemed to be in a bad location. This is debatable and it all depends on how we want our tax dollars being used. You're making a general statement about the gun being in a safe and being unreachable when that isn't normally the case. Gun owners keep their gun at their nightstand, or in a biometric safe, or a similar safe that is quickly opened (and it's always within reaching distance).

The problem with a "smart-gun" isn't for when you're sleeping. The problem with a "smart-gun" is when you're pointing the gun at your target and it not firing reliably when you need it to be. In other words, less than a quarter of a second could mean death. Any jam could mean death. This is partly the reason why law enforcement uses Glocks because there is no safety mechanism to disengage (and they're just flat out extremely reliable and always shoot).

You're advocating a "smart-gun" for the wrong reasons. The advantage to a theoretical "smart-gun" is that it can't be stolen and used by someone else. It wouldn't, but I'm happy to elaborate why you're wrong. A gun is reliable because 1) It is well designed, 2) It is battle-tested and proven, 3) It doesn't jam. A gun's reliablity is purely mechanical and has absolutely nothing to do with performing under pressure.

The problem with "smart-guns" is because creating such a gun would require a complete overhaul of gun design as we know it. Guns include a lot of parts - think of a gun like an old-fashioned watch. There are hundreds of modern guns that aren't reliable, which is the reason the Military and Government only use certain guns. New designs for modern day guns take an average of around 5-10 years to design. Designing a "smart-gun" would require at least twice as much time and would definitely not meet the military's standard of reliability (coincidentally, a civilian's standard for reliability is the same as the military because life is that valuable) because the technology just doesn't exist. It would be the equivalent to colonists with their muskets (the ones where you smolder a wick to the gunpowder) in the 1700s inventing an AR-15.
