I don't see any specific recommendations for a safe, so wanted to make two specific ones. I have used and love both. Both are simplex style locking systems.

  • VLine's The Brute
    • Box-style; good to have it sit in one place. Holes in the bottom so you can screw it into the floorboards if you want (get it into joists). Surprisingly heavy duty for its size.

  • Solo Vault M 200
    • Slightly lighter weight than the brute, with the ability to be chained to things. Can be used to store locked up in a car, for example. If you get a chain, get a heavy duty one and a heavy duty lock with a long ish loop, put the lock loop through both ends of the chain and the designated hole in the box (it should make sense once you see the box, so maybe get box and look at it before getting a chain).

Simplex locks are very reliable, but they also have a finite number of codes. A clever person with a ton of time on their hands could exhaustively try all codes to get in eventually. So they are not foolproof (no safe is), so you need to bear that in mind and be vigilant.

Both are excellent and I think nearly the best for your purpose. I'd actually lean towards the M200 for your purpose.

Finally, as I'm sure many have said, a safe is not a set-and-forget thing if you have a child. You must also teach your child about dangers of firearms. (It sounds like this has been said plenty by others so I'll leave it at that).

ps ALSO, a Ruger SP101s are excellent, high-quality firearms - you made a great choice for a revolver and should not experience the problems you describe. As others have indicated, Ruger customer service is some of the best in the business. Contact them and they should help you out.

A simple Amazon Basics pistol box will run you about $60. Its what I use. I like it.

My nightstand box is a Vaultek. The Vaultek is better buts its also about $150 or maybe 115 for a refurb.

the vaultek

Bottom line: The vaultek is better but the Amazon is adequate.

Vaultek Pros:

Nicer fit and finish.

Better feeling buttons.

Slightly sturdier feel.

Buttons light up when you run your hand over them so its easy to see in the dark.

The corner hinge has a pass through hole to support a thick anchor cable.

Interior light.

Amazon Pros:

Half the price.

Basically, I chose the vaultek for the nightstand as something that looks good enough to actually have out on the nightstand where I have to see it daily (actually bolted in place). Also something I can depend on quickly, quietly rolling over and opening in the middle of the night.

The Amazon however, is just going to live in the trunk of my car, and its rare that I’d need to get into it that quickly. (Like you, I just need a safe legal way to store my ccw when my job or location requires me to de-gun).

Bottom line, in the trunk of the car, the amazons boxier look and slightly cheaper mushier feeling buttons don’t bother me for a truck safe.

Both good options, no reason to pay double for the nicer box if you never have to see it.

Assuming you plan to bolt it in, both boxes come with mounting holes.

Both will be adequate size. The vaultek (snugly) has room for my HK VP with WML and 3 spare mags.

The Amazon is even roomier a bit I THINK. It fits my ccw in the holster, spare mag in a carrier, and there’s plenty of room to spare.

> I am legal age in my state, just not legal age to conceal carry yet (which I most definitely plan on doing when I turn 21) but I do want a pistol.

You have to be 21 to purchase a pistol--federal law.

>--Preferably has some oompf, I'll accept advice and suggestions on what caliber would be most appropriate for what I need it for (home defense currently, in the future hopefully using it as a conceal and carry.)

The hotter the round the slower the follow, at least as a general rule. You don't want "oomph" you want something comfortable to shoot and controllable. You want it comfortable because you're going to need to shoot it a lot to get good at it.

As far as what kind to get, go to a range that rents guns and rent some guns.

After you've tried three or four (at least) sit down and figure out what characteristics are *most* important to you. Is easy concealablity more important than magazine size? Do you want polymer or metal frame? Striker or Hammer? Revolver or Pistol, Single Action, Traditional Double Action or Double Action Only.

>I'm also looking for a decent safe to store my firearm in, as a responsible gun owner should.
>
>--I live with one person who I doubt would ever even touch the safe.
>
>--I don't have children, nor do any ever visit.
>
>--Needs to be big enough for a pistol, but I don't want a huge, expensive, towering object that I need to make room for.

https://www.amazon.com/Bulldog-Vaults-Personal-Security-1-8-Inch/dp/B00PBIH8UQ/ comes with a cable to lock it to something.

Or https://www.amazon.com/Stack-GCB-500-Steel-Pistol-Cabinet/dp/B002TOKR2G/ that you bolt to the wall or another cabinet.

No, they aren't really safes, and no they won't stop a determined thief. The first one you can sort of stick somewhere non-obvious. The second one...is a little harder to hide.

There's a brazilian other options on Amazon.

>Stay safe.

Bah. That's no fun.

> Do you think a reality TV star known for bankruptcies and being a general piece of human trash is a good fit for a president?

I think as a person he is near trash, we're in agreement there, but his policy is not bad. Since Bill Clinton and JFK were elected despite being not the best people on the merit of "look at their policy, not their character", republicans have done the same.

>I know it’s not really relevant, but if we’re talking about a debate here how can you dismiss someone’s point of view based on their profession?

>Because the dude is a comedian he can’t have intelligent thoughts outside of jokes?

Fair enough, one's profession is not a good metric for judging their ideas and ideals. However, when your opening line is essentially saying responsible gun owners keep their guns in safes rendering them useless proves his ignorance on a subject right out of the gate. Why would I consider the opinion of one with no credibility? I keep my hunting rifles and shotguns in a safe, and yes, I wouldn't have time to get them in an intrusion. I do, however, have something like this on my nightstand. I can retrieve a loaded gun from a safe in about 15 seconds. If it's not there, it's on my hip where it's also safe.

I will say, having owned several Stack-On cabinets, you really have to be aware of what you're getting when you buy them.

For starters, they just categorically will not keep someone out if they've got even a minute and the mind to do so. I pried open the door of one with my bare hands in less than a minute after the lock broke (more on that in a second.) If you lack my chad-like physique, a screwdriver (or hell even probably just a pen) would do the same job no problem.

They are also one step short of an actual cage in terms of airflow. If you want something that's even remotely air tight or you're concerned about moisture, a Stack-On cabinet has shit load of holes in it. I took Sugru and patched the majority of them and that worked okay but realistically it needs a lot of work if you're going to keep it even moderately air tight.

The locks are the cheapest of the cheap. The first two cabinets I had failed because the lock just fell apart. They're made of some egregiously terrible pot metal. You can upgrade them and, if you can find the right type of lock, it's relatively simple to do but if the lock fails while the locking bars are engaged you will almost certainly have to bend the door open to even get at the contents of the locker and at that point it's pretty much toast.

What worked pretty well for me was getting one of those key safes and just bolting it to the outside of the locker. The key safe is far more resistant to fuckery than the locker is and anyone determined to get into the locker is going to bypass the key safe entirely and just yank the door open.

This is basically just a locker to keep kids and guests away from guns and to keep things in the same relative space. Do not count on it to protect your shit during a burglary because there's very little you can do to it that's going to prevent that.

I'm not saying "avoid" but do be aware of what you're getting into and adjust expectations accordingly.

If money is that tight where you cant get something a little better, at least go for their "tactical" model. I have not personally had my hands on one but from what I've seen they are a step up from the basic lockers that solve a lot of the issues the lockers have and the price bump really isn't that bad.

To help with moisture, get a silicone cloth and wipe guns down before they go back into wherever you're storing them. Even just doing this will help immensely and I have one stuck to the inside of my safe for everything that goes in. Being in the PNW, moisture is foremost on my list of concerns for firearms. Plus it's like $5.

Thats why its useful to lock your door from the inside. You can use addition locks like this or just a chair wedged under the handle.

www.amazon.com/Rishon-Enterprises-Addalock-1-Piece/dp/B00186URTY/

It takes about 30 seconds to pick the lock on even high end dead bolt locks. Consumer grade door security is garbage.

Here is someone using two bobby pins in less than a minute.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnS6leHfB2c

You can make bump keys, electric lock picks, manual picks, etc, etc. The locks on your door mean nothing to someone who understands how basic they are.

If you suspect someone is entering your house like this you can set traps to detect them. Place some small pieces of dust or "trash" like paper in windowsills where if someone came in and out they would disrupt it. Remember or write down the exact positions of these items. Similarly, when you leave your house reach inside the door and place a small piece of trash right behind the door so if its opened the trash will be blown or otherwise moved from the position you remember placing it in. Carefully open the door and check your trap when getting home. They might see the trap but it doesn't matter, they already triggered it and you will know no matter what that someone was there.

>I keep a metal baseball bat by my bed now and I will use it.

Make sure you know how to swing it well. If I saw someone with a bat it wouldn't really make me hesitate and in fact would just make me think they were focusing too much on the bat as a useful weapon when its really not, especially inside a house where you'll almost always not have room to generate power.

I would suggest a Ruger .380 LCP loaded with high quality ammo kept in a fingerprint locked safe. Total cost is under $500.

http://www.amazon.com/BARSKA-Opening-Biometric-Fingerprint-Safe/dp/B004FO37AC/

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/54585

Make sure you bolt the safe down so your children don't get any ideas later on in life. Also, make sure you teach them gun safety before they're teenagers. The four rules. Treat all guns as if loaded. Never point a gun at something you wouldn't accept being destroyed. Know your target and what is beyond it. Finger off the trigger/out of the trigger gurd at all times until you want to shoot.

u/thabeav83 · 5 pointsr/guns

I own a Gun Vault biometric safe which is located next to my bed. I have 3 young children and this is perfect for me. I programmed my fingerprints and after some learning on my part discovered that if I wet my finger a little (lick my finger then wipe it off) the safe reads my fingerprint better and opens immediately. It uses a 9 volt battery which lasts 6-9 months with me using it twice a day.

If you go this option I would recommend mounting the safe to something. Currently my safe just rests on the lower portion of my nightstand. I opted for the biometric safe which is a little more expensive. Do some research. I highly recommend this safe.

This is more gun owner advice than legal advice, but I would recommend switching to glaser safety slug ammo and a fingerprint safe like this one. http://www.amazon.com/BARSKA-Opening-Biometric-Fingerprint-Safe/dp/B004FO37AC

As for legal advice I think you're probably good since no one seems to have reported it.

u/Harry-Balsagna · 6 pointsr/CCW

Amazon price tracker confirms your observation that they were $60, now half price, average price over the product's history is $46.

I think these types of safes are effective if they are also decently hidden, as they can be defeated often within seconds (as I just did mine recently when the battery died and I couldn't find the key and found a youtube video that showed how to open it almost instantly), but can keep honest people honest and grubby kids hands off them if found.

Great channel for seeing how to quickly defeat most amazon safes:

On the return policy - you're right, they allow for return if there's a defect... there's absolutely no satisfaction guarantee though.

The lock they include is this: https://www.amazon.com/Combi-Cam-7850R-L-Combination-Chrome-Finish/dp/B000W7DBWA/ just in black. Is yours different? That little metal tab is meant to keep your desk drawer locked - not something I'd use for this type of application.

The boxes that are chained to your seat frame are like $30-$50. For $270, I'd expect better. As for how long I leave it unlocked - sometimes the whole time I'm in the car? Since it took up my whole console, sometimes I'd leave it unlocked to get to paperwork or while there's no firearm inside.

The fact that it's designed to fit and installs in minutes was the big appeal to me - and that's worth a lot. I installed it in like 5 minutes. That said, my current vehicle doesn't have an application specific box and has a huge console, so I think it's going to get this one on one side of the inside of the console with a custom bracket to affix it to the same bolts that hold the console in place: https://www.amazon.com/Fort-Knox-Personal-Handgun-Pistol/dp/B015D82XAS

This is probably better quality, fits my Glock 19 fine, and has free 2 day shipping for prime members.

Liberty Safe Handgun Vaults Small Key Vault https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077FJB2Y9

u/JorvikViking · 1 pointr/mazda3

Good question - I haven’t found a good solution yet. I was thinking something like this mounted in the trunk.
What are you trying to fit? My G43 just fits in the center console. Any of my full frame pistols have to go in a sleeve under a seat (for a short period of time only!) or in the trunk.
I built a custom amp rack under the parcel shelf and may mount of those safes to it if there’s space after my second amp is mounted.
This is one of those times where a larger vehicle is beneficial :/

u/chloraphil · 1 pointr/guns

Why the 590A1 over the 500? I have one, and honestly, I wish I'd just gotten the 500 and saved the money. The 590A1 is heavier, and you can get a combo deal for a good price (example: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/37_336/products_id/46905).

You definitely want to lock your gun up. I see the shotlock sells on their website for $169 - I got this: (http://www.amazon.com/SentrySafe-G0135-Black-Maximum-Capacity/dp/B000Z8P1J2/) on sale at walmart for $163 - it's $179 at the moment, just a thought.

There is some debate about the best rounds to use for a shotgun in a home defense setting- there are two factors at odds - the ability of the projectile(s) to stop a threat, and the tendency of the projectile(s) to penetrate walls in your house and put family/neighbors at risk. The fact of the matter is that the two go together. I have 00 buck, in RIO Low Recoil 00 buck. Federal Low-Recoil is highly recommended I believe.

u/RandomRageNet · 1 pointr/guns

I'm a first-time owner too! I use this safe to lock my pistol up. I keep it loaded in the safe but not chambered -- I figure if I have time to open the safe, I have time to actually pull the slide, but don't have to mess with fumbling for a mag in the darkness.

I keep the rest of the ammo in my closet, because what is someone gonna do, throw it at me?

(and yes, that's my amazon associate link up there but I never actually use it so I figure I might as well)

u/Gsrapp · 3 pointsr/malelivingspace

If you need to store your valuables onsite, that is much harder to break into than a Sentry Safe (the shit you get at Target) I would suggest a safe like this:

Steelwater AMSWD-530 2-Hour Fireproof Home and Document Safe

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010EJRLO4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_z6HHybA40JHK5

Would be heavy enough that they would need a dolly to move (150lbs). Also try to put it somewhere other than the bedroom. That's generally the first place burglars look.

u/uninsane · 2 pointsr/guns

For quick, secure access, I like this mechanical lock safe. It can be bolted to the floor under a bed or in a closet and you can set the push buttons for whatever combo you like. It never runs out of battery. https://www.amazon.com/Fort-Knox-Personal-Handgun-Pistol/dp/B015D82XAS

u/ichug_nyquil · 7 pointsr/guns

I’m using a SnapSafe Under Bed Safe XL from Amazon. Meets all of your requirements and can be cablelocked to your bed frame. ~$300 w/ free shipping and you could get it to your apartment with 3 people easily.

u/haydle · 1 pointr/Shotguns

ooo those might be the ticket. The Truck Vault ones are a little pricey but the Troy ones look pretty good. I was initially looking at this but none of the reviews are from people who have put it in a vehicle.

u/drebinf · 1 pointr/homedefense

My earlier comment had an inappropriate affiliate link.

This should be the 'safe' one. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015OZBWTS/

I have a number of PS-1520 (see link), and a PS-520.
I keep some lower value items in them, and space for extra short-term items as you describe. They're by Stack-On but the material is substantially thicker than those plain security cabinets. A whack with the backside of a claw hammer would go right through a security cabinet, but might not even dent one of these. Well, maybe a small dent (I don't really want to experiment...)

u/plethoraofpinatas · 2 pointsr/TheSurvivalGuide

Fun fact: this little [1] safe is the reason I bought my first [2] pick kit.

I ordered and received this brand new mini safe and then put the keys in it like an idiot in order to move it to another room. Little did I realize that it would auto lock on me before I set it's first code. Sad panda big time.

Replacement factory key = same price as cheap lock pick set without having to document every aspect of my purchase.
Decision...decision...get a lockpick set and find out what lockpick skills I might have or order a replacement key for the same price and have to scan in and email all sorts of i.d.?

Got the pick set. Found out a monkey could pick this safe. You are a better picker than you realize. Give it a try. It's fun and the are lots of resources to learn about the mechanics of locks. The history of them is another very neat read.

Also, this safe would take some time to pry into with levers and hammers as it is fairly heavy duty for a cheapie. However, one pick and one tensioner could pick it in one second once you've practiced. Think about that. Thank god most criminals are idiots without pick skills.

u/Superdistortion · 6 pointsr/CCW

I just got this: SHOT LOCK 1911 Full Handgun Solo-Vault Safe

I'm very happy with it. It's heavy and well made. I also like that it's not battery powered.

Edit: It has a 3/8" hole in the corner for a cable, which is how mine is attached. I have it under the passenger seat, cabled to one side of the seat base.

u/JFred15 · 2 pointsr/CCW

I bought one of these, and it works quite well. Enough room for my gun (Glock 43) and a spare mag. It has removable layers of foam to increase the depth of the storage area so I am able to store the gun in the holster so I don’t ever expose my trigger, even when storing my gun. The plastic/rubber exterior is nice too because it is super strong, but non-slip and if it does hit something, won’t cause as much damage as a metal exterior. I ran the cable around the bars that hold my trunk on my car making it secure and easily accessible for storage/removal.

Edit: They sell different size ones to fit different storage needs. The XL is just what I have.

I use this GunVault and I love it.

The biometric scanner in the new models is much better than previous ones (in case some are going to argue their reliability).

Also, GunVault is a phenomenal company to work with, providing some of the best customer support and care I've ever experienced. Price is high, but in this instance, I firmly belief I got what I paid for.

u/pewpewadvice · 1 pointr/guns

Have kids, basically a state of California requirement, would secure to floor. Was looking at this safe or something like it. At 46lbs I don't think it's going to be moving from my closet, especially not if I secure it to the floor.

Granted, a tall cabinet isn't that much different, just the ones that don't weigh hundreds of pounds seem more filmsy than secure.

u/Mini-Marine · 8 pointsr/pdxgunnuts

Clackamas Country Sheriffs range has good training available.

For just going out and shooting, North Fork Wolf Creek Road out past Timber on Hwy 26 is a good spot.

Getting a membership at Tri County is worth it if you actually shoot on a regular basis.

As far as storage, if it's just the one gun, There's an Amazon Basics safe that's surprisingly good and if you wait to catch it on sale you can get it for around $35

u/sullerson · 2 pointsr/guns

This video shows the weaknesses in many of the popular safes on the market. So many are easily opened, that it's a bit worrisome when you think about how easy your kids could get into them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXRKYBXqbro

After watching this I picked up a lockSafe biometric safe, It was one of the harder ones to crack. I use it only to store my handguns. I keep one by my side while I sleep and one is on me at all times otherwise.

Everything after "https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077FJB2Y9" is unnecessary in an Amazon link. The junk at the end just tells Amazon who to pay for referring you to their site. That's why there are so many useless "review" websites out there telling you how great a bunch of stuff is and providing Amazon links.

PEW PEWWW

Under CA law:
If you leave your gun laying around and a child obtains your firearm and uses it, you will be convicted of a crime. This does not apply if your child breaks into your safe (seriously... here's a link http://law.justia.com/codes/california/2013/code-pen/part-6/title-4/division-4/chapter-2/section-25105).

I don't think CA has given us any requirements (i.e. thickness of metal, type of lock, etc.) to what 'locked container' means.

I would go with something that is fully enclosed, has a combo lock (so you don't have to find a key at 3AM), that your child can't realistically get into, and can be bolted to something.

Here are a few that I like.

u/dimview · 5 pointsr/guns

That choice depends on how much protection you need, how big it is, and your budget. The cheapest pistol box is Stack-On PDS-500. You'll need to either disable mechanical key override on it or replace it with Abloy. While you have it open you might also want to put a piece of metal to protect the solenoid from being activated through the hole in the corner (look for YouTube video that demonstrates this exploit). Stack-On makes similar lockboxes, but bigger.

Anything from Liberty Safe is good to go if it's within your budget.

Amazon and other websites show it is normally ~$80, seems to be identical to a lot of other "brands" that have a model with very similar hardware. Anyway, seems like a decent deal for a first quick-access gun safe.

Walmart apparently had the same deal, now out of stock.

Something top of the line is Fort Knox Pistol Box.

Personally, I have used this as a bed side safe and never had any problems with it.

For the shotgun I'd look into something like this or this rather than relying on security through obscurity.

The Stack-On style stamped steel gun cabinets work just fine. While they aren't safes (they are never meant to be) they will keep your guns away from the kids so long as they don't have the key. Keeping them away from sneaky kids and people who wander off during your house parties are what gun cabinets are made for. The problem with cabinets and lock boxes is that people buy them assuming that theieves can't get into them. Its simply just not what they were designed for. They are designed for semi-supervised storage and to keep kids out. An adult with a crowbar is going to get into them with enough time. They aren't intended to be anti-theft safes. With enough time any thief will get them open with just a couple hand tools, but that goes for ANY lockbox or cabinet. Unless you got the money to spend 1500 bucks or more on a real safe then anything you keep your guns in will only have an attack rating of about ten minutes.

You can also look into something like this

http://www.amazon.com/SHOT-LOCK-S-SLC01-02-ShotLock-Solo-Vault/dp/B007UT14FO/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1411013821&sr=1-1&keywords=shotlock+vault

They keep you gun more readily accessible in the event of a home invasion but your kids still can't discharge it if they are fucking around with it while your not home. That being said just like just like any lockbox or cabinet that isn't a 1500 dollar + floor safe a thief with enough time will get into it or rip it out of the wall and walk off with it to open it somewhere else.

Welcome to the club. The LockSaf is well respected and reviewed, but it's not exactly cheap at $285.99. What type of budget at you looking at?

2 safes that bolt to the floor, have internal bolts on both sides, cost less than most guns, are well past "reasonably secured", and can be stored on a 5th floor (??)

Hey /u/LockPickingLawyer,

Thanks for making all these cool videos. I just wanted to share my appreciation for your work and your professionalism.

It's always enjoyable to watch you put your impressive lock picking skill to work.

I was wondering if you were planning on trying to defeat Gun Boxes/Safes. You have a series about gun locks but I haven't seen you tackle gun safes.

I recently bought the V-Line Brute and it seems very solid. I would be very curious to see you (or bosnianbill) try to defeat this gun safe, even with destructive tools.

The only flaw that I can currently see is the Simplex Lock with the low number of possible combinations. It is very solidly made. Once bolted down, I think power tools would be needed to defeat it.

Anyways, keep up the good work and thanks a lot for your contributions. And as always, have a nice day!

u/Sand_Trout · 5 pointsr/Firearms

Handgun safes aren't that expensive.

They are definitely cheaper than a trip to the ER.

I've seen brand posted before, but I do not own. V-Line Desk Mate Keyless Security Box with Quick Release Mounting Bracket (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000T2C7Z0/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_RXjMub1D8MKAR

Unless somebody has bolt cutters or a dremel they aren’t going to be able to get through the steel cable quickly. I take it out of my car when I’m at home. It’s on me unless I’m in a gun free zone. Pretty small window of opportunity to be stolen. If the car is stolen I’m SOL.

Something like this.

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Stack-TC-16-GB-K-DS-Tactical-Security-Cabinet/dp/B00IT4YIWU/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1493693487&sr=1-1&keywords=stack+on+tactical+gun+cabinet

If the padding is anything like the one in mine, it wont be an issue. I've gone months without so much as opening the cabinet and I've yet to find a spot of rust on any of my firearms. The issue with foam is when it is physically touching the metal on the gun, so if you have them set upright (like a person would typically do with a storage cabinet) then it only comes into contact with the butt of the rifle stock.

Alternatively. The padding is a cheap insert that you can just pull out of the bottom of the case, if you so desire.

And the barrel rests are made out of plastic, assuming they're the same ones as in my cabinet. If you watch the video, they appear to be the same barrel rests. I think it's their own patented design, so they use the same rests in all of their cabinets.

Hope I helped.

Honestly in this situation, I'd go with one of these. Quick access with a simplex lock, going to keep it out of your kids hands. I'd mount it to a stud in the closet.

u/print · 2 pointsr/guns

I spent a bit of time researching biometric safes and came to the same conclusion as /u/whatthefuckguys - namely that biometric safes are a crock of shit.

My biggest problem with them is that they require a battery or some kind of electric power source. That's a single point of failure - not what you want if some asshole is breaking down you front door in the middle of the night.

Can you imagine getting murdered because you couldn't draw down because you can't get you fancy pants bio safe open?

On the other hand I have 2 kids (ages 2 and 5) and a halfway-sane wife, so unlocked guns in the house is absolutely out of the question.

I got to thinking about mechanical locks, and ended up with one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OGLG04/

I liked it so much I bought a second one. With a little practice, it now takes me less than 3 seconds to go from locked to open and gun in hand. The lock keys are tactile and you can do it in pitch black darkness.

Can't recommend it enough. It has nice felt inside, a handle so it travels well - I take it to the range all the time.

The one downside is that due to the mechanical lock, the number of possible combinations is smaller, so it could be brute-forced. But it's really just intended to prevent casual access - which it excels at.

u/Chunky_Mayonnaise · 4 pointsr/guns

http://www.amazon.com/SHOT-LOCK-S-SLC01-02-ShotLock-Solo-Vault/dp/B007UT14FO Mounted to a stud in a closet should work. I have something similar and while not high security it does prevent access while still being easy to retrieve http://imgur.com/emAjhzq

Another option would be a concealment shelf from TacticalWalls

If you're just worried about child-proofing, almost anything on Amazon will do. This is not electronic. I've got a similar one, and it works fine. But I've also got an electronic one (similar), and two years on the battery's going fine, and it's got a key backup.

You have to buy something. We're not being ass holes, get something to keep your daughter safe. I don't care how little room you have. If you can't keep the gun locked up, the gun needs to go.

u/Lost_Thought · 21 pointsr/guns

Something like this screwed directly into a wall stud should fit the bill. Plus when you move out, all you have to do is fill the holes with drywall putty and paint.

u/Lentspark · 8 pointsr/trees

Get a small safe like this while you live on campus to keep your shit in.

u/possible-troll · 5 pointsr/guns

If you have traffic in your house, (Especially of the kid type) Get a digital locking safe, preferably one with a backup key.

Example: http://www.amazon.com/Stack-On-PDS-500-Drawer-Safe-Electronic/dp/B002KEIU4W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334582257&sr=8-1

I also really like the Winchester PDX ammo for Home Defense. If you are worried about wall penetration the Power-Ball will buy you some peace of mind, but the jury is still out on it. I usually keep on hand enough HD ammo around for 2 mags of whatever my current HD gun is.

Finally.. SHOOT YOUR HD AMMO. So many people don't use it due to the price. But you need to make sure that that the ammo performs properly in the gun.

u/unexpectedraisins · 7 pointsr/CCW

I have this installed on the roof of my trunk for storing my CCW when I need to leave it in my car. It's actually bolted to the frame so I feel a lot safer about it than the lock boxes that just have a cable to wrap around the seat brackets.

The fact that it's in the trunk (and mostly out of sight even with the trunk open) is important: most smash-and-grab thieves don't even open the trunk, I can put it in valet mode and keep anybody I turn the car over to from even seeing that it's there, and it's a secondary locked container so it automatically complies with all but the most draconian storage/transport laws.

u/Seabass18 · 5 pointsr/guns

This. I have a Fort Knox pistol box in the bedroom it will hold 3 mid sized pistols and I welded one of these into my Wrangler it's smaller and will hold one up to full sized pistol (P226 is close but fits).

I had an electronic gun vault but the buttons stopped working and then I saw this video showing how quickly they can be compromised! Simplex locks have their downsides too, with enough time you can try all combos and eventually get in but they are much more reliable than electronic or biometric alternatives usually faster too.

Their larger shotgun box would likely fit your M92 if the pistol box is too small.

This might be ok if you live by your self, or in a house with all adults, or if the gun is kept unloaded...and this is in your bedroom...but then my initial reaction too was that it seemed to be in a bad location. Less than 50 bucks, simple 4 digit PIN number and a twist. Heavy and bolted to the drawer bottom.

Can it be defeated? Sure. Rip it out of the drawer and smash it to pieces with a crowbar and a hammer.

Is it easy and fast to open? Yep, unless you are hopelessly confused about the universal layout of a numeric keypad.

I can do it by feel in the dark in a few seconds. If that isn't fast enough, I am already in deep shit.

u/yoda133113 · 3 pointsr/moderatepolitics

> So the problem continues.

No, we make laws to fix the problem, rather than harass victims. Going after crime victims isn't fixing problems, but is instead making yourself feel better because you did something. Maybe we should do things to deal with the crime itself and not focus on the tool.

> Not sure if you’ve seen a gun safe, but those suckers aren’t easy to break in.

I've seen hundreds of gun safes. Many are cheap shit that are either easy to break into, or easy to simply steal and break in later. Do you think the poor are going to have the nice ones that "aren't easy to break in" or the shitty ones that are easy to get into. Here's one that Amazon is selling. I'd like you to note that even in the product images, it's just sitting on a cheap wooden shelf. Even if it's bolted onto that shelf, it's easily stolen. Then a criminal can take their time to open it at home.

Gun safes, absent large and expensive ones or ones very securely mounted (to concrete or thick metal), are mostly a safety device to keep kids out, not a significant theft prevention device. The criminal already overcame the lock on your door. The bolts into your wooden desk aren't going to be too much to overcome for them.

> with a statistic like 79% of guns used in crime being stolen or given to the perp, it seems like a starter.

Well, let's find a source. Here's a PBS article on this subject, and I'll quote from them:

> "Stolen guns account for only about 10% to 15% of guns used in crimes," Wachtel said.

The article keeps going to explain that the black market is where illegal guns come from, with the majority being sourced legally in the first place. (Edit: And another source on this: "Among prisoners serving time for a crime during which they possessed a gun, about half got their weapons either on the underground market (43 percent) or through theft (6 percent).")

I'll also note that you combined "stolen" and "given" as if we were talking about both of these, why is that?

> I’m far from anti-poor, but if you want a gun, that comes at a price.

Let me rephrase this to what it sounds like to me. "I'm far from anti-poor, but if you're one of the people that are most likely to need self-defense, I'm going to make it impossible for you!" That's how that reads. It sure seems like you supporting the poor with this kind of thing.

> A well-regulated militia of one requires training, which requires money.

One, everyone is part of the militia (this is the current law, though you can say that it's limited to those able-bodied from 17-45), and this doesn't require training. Two, training doesn't require a lot of money. Simply because you want to toss out buzzwords and define them as you wish doesn't change the law.

> To say that just anyone can have a gun without security or training seems against the second amendment.

Well, that's your opinion. It's never been interpreted that way by a court system, but it is still your opinion. Further, until this sentence, we weren't really talking about "without security" and we weren't talking about training. We were talking about safes and stolen guns. Why are you changing the subject?

> Let’s say there’s a government program that if you are part of militia it would put grants to help purchase training and security safes, would that be another step towards helping the poor defend their home but not add to the problem of their guns being used in crime?

If you want a program that lets anyone (because we shouldn't be discriminatory) get a grant for training (I personally think that this should be part of primary education in high school) and safes, then sure, let's do it.

But I'll note that you haven't fixed the problem of stolen guns at all, as gun safes are fairly small and easy to steal most of the time. Of course, as the article above says, this isn't the problem with guns. It's just an easy justification to invade gun rights.
