I'm sorry for your loss. The fact that your relative gave you those guns speaks to how generous of a person they were. What you have is a very solid base for a collection, and several guns that not only have been greatly increasing in value of the last few years, but stand to increase further in the future.

For a 22lr to practice with, get a Ruger 10/22. You'll have to wait a bit to get a good price on one, but 3-4 times a year a basic wood stock model will go on sale for about $200. Check /r/gundeals regularly, as well as this site, which used to be slickguns, but is apparently now renamed. For ammo, gunbot.net can help you find good prices on ammo, especially if you want to order in quantity. Put some Tech Sights on it, and get a 1,24" cotton GI Sling and Uncle Mikes 1.25" QD swivels (note that you can find better prices on those if you look around.) and you'll be set up to learn to shoot most of the rifles you have there very well.

Check the FAQ. Sign up for an Appleseed Project shoot and spend a weekend learning sling supported shooting. Have fun, be safe, and welcome to the community!

Totally agree, wish they had come with the stocks like that from the factory. Laminate stocks are similar to regular walnut/hardwood stocks (just thin layers appoxied/resined together forming an overall stronger bond and stock) I installed mine fairly easily just make sure your pre-drill your holes correctly and measure twice.
There are a lot of resources on youtube

Find the one that best suits you

Its all totally doable yourself but if you feel uncomfortable you could always have a gunsmith do it (but if I could do it myself without messing anything up you should be able to as well) If your rifle has a barrel band (I dont believe your model does) they make adapters to attach to it so you wouldn't have to drill the fore-end. Uncle Mike's are great products and thats what I used but there are other good brands, make and models as well, hard to go wrong with swivel studs. Also if you drill in the forward stud it would give you the option to use a swivel stud bipod

Good luck and enjoy the awesome rifle!

u/Thenethiel · 3 pointsr/guns

This is the swivel set you need. It has a stud that go into the barrel band in front, or use a screw-in one on the stock. You will need to file the plastic on the barrel band down a bit to get it to tighten down right. The rear one will just be the screw-in one.

As Mr. fufu said below, it's not hard to do and basic drill and file sets are always handy to have around, or it should be a pretty easy job for any gunsmith.

Today was day 1 of my first Appleseed and I'm using a TakeDown. Other than the swivels being a little more work to install it works just fine. I would suggest against the Magpul specifically for Appleseed. The QD points are on the side which will make the gun tilt when you use the sling for support, and the cheek weld can be weird for how they teach it. In general I love that stock, just not for this.

u/zxj4k3xz · 1 pointr/airsoft

I'd say a sling mount would work best. Depending on where you want to put it and what mounting style you're using:

low profile m-lok sling mount

Low profile picatinny mount

offset picatiny mount. I think this would work best. Sort of like in this picture

low profile keymod mount

u/Pattycaaakes · 3 pointsr/airsoft

I have the Saber Carbine and it's a beast. I sounds really solid when shooting, you know, like, some guns kind of have a wheezing whistling sound when you fire them; the Avalon doesn't have any of that. Great ROF on full auto with a 11.1v lipo. FPS is solid (I've never chrono'd mine, but there are youtube reviews where you can see it's FPS. It has a solid, hefty weight to it. Buffer tube fits my 11.1v 1300mah stick lipos no problem. Like, /u/zxj4k3xz said the stock it a little wobbly and the right side selector is a little loose/ has a slight wobble, but neither of those things affect the performance of the rifle. A little tape on the buffer tube will fix the stock wobble. I liked that the stock stock (heh) has a slot to attach a sling and the hand guard has a DQ sling mount, all you need is one of these

u/MoneyKeyPennyKiss · 0 pointsr/1022

USGI sling can be found here.

If you choose to buy elsewhere, be sure to buy cotton, not nylon. Nylon has a tendency to slip, especially in the loop configuration you'll learn at Appleseed.

You'll also need sling swivels and sling studs. You can get them as a set here.

Tip for installing the studs on your synthetic stock: Start with a small drill bit about 1/2 half the size of the screw on the stud. Pre-drill holes in the stock. Insert a nail through the sling stud and twist it into the stock until the holes are perpendicular to the bore.

You're all set. Good luck and happy shooting.

u/rekstout · 2 pointsr/guns

Standard Uncle Mikes sling studs will fit just fine on the synthetic stock, just make sure to drill a pilot hole. I also added epoxy to the threads to secure them and ensure they didn't rotate. No need to get the machine screw set unless you really want to.

As far as mounting the front stud is concerned, it should be fine mounted just before (i.e. trigger side, not muzzle side) the lasermax mount (based on Googled pics). Thats approximately where mine is ad you dont wat it too far forward anyway. Mine is mounted about an inch before the barrel band and is probably still and inch too far out for me and I'm 6'2.

I shot an Appleseed last weekend with my synthetic stocked 10/22 stainless with these studs, swivels and GI sling and had no issues (other than the weather).

u/ho_merjpimpson · 6 pointsr/1022

its not a shame. it is a rip off. magpul sells you an expensive stock and then says... ohh... want to mount a sling to it? here, send us another $30.

screw them. i went and bought these:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HJL094O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

which work perfectly great. didnt come with mounting screws, but they were easy enough to pick up at the hardware store.

u/TripleDabz · 2 pointsr/guns

I recommend a 2 point sling with quick adjustment. such as the regular vtack sling. I advise agaist the padded sling or wide sling as it is bulky which is what you dont't want. If you don't already have a front sling attachment point you will need one that either attaches to your picattiny rail or mlok/keymod depending on how your foreend is configured. Sinceyour stock is setup for ball detent QD makes sense to do the front in the same.

qd sling adapter for rear stock

picatinny 45 degree QD sling point with D attachment

Mlock QD sling point with QD atchment.

keymod sling point with QD

You do not want a single point sling as it will swing freely when you run and beat up you knees, a 2 point is versitile and can be used to cinch the gun tight to chest or back when running, wrapped around the support forearm for shooting stability, or if looped over the right shoulder falls hown over left hip for pistol transitions.

u/edheler · 2 pointsr/1022

I am sure you, like most of us, have a more mechanically inclined friend who is also into firearms. I understand your trepidation making modifications. You can get a part which attaches to the barrel band on the front end so you don't have to drill there. Here is a kit.

Keep watching gunbot for .22LR ammo. It comes up from time to time. You have to jump on it when you see it for reasonable prices. ($0.30 or more per round is certainly not reasonable!) I would seriously consider placing an order with CMP and being happy when it arrived 6-12 months later since their prices are reasonable if you don't have anything other than that one brick.

The TSA annoys me even more than various States carry issues and restrictions! On top of that I actually like driving. I have traveled as far as a 9 hour drive to an Appleseed but going west which would be about the drive time to Connecticut. One of these days I will make it up that way.

u/MisterNoisy · 3 pointsr/gundeals

I really like these as a budget alternative to the VTAC quick-adjust sling. $20 all day long, great construction (tubular nylon instead of flat straps), and if you don't want to use the quick-adjust loop, you don't have to.

Add these if you have standard swivel studs or these if you have QD mounts - both are under $10.

u/telero_sfw · 2 pointsr/guns

You'll want a sling mount more like this: http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Detachable-Swivel-Picatinny-Mounting/dp/B003TWZHQ8/ref=pd_sim_sbs_misc_5 or one of the ones at the link provided by Reusable Hero. The RSA is for a different type of sling than the the USGI web sling.

u/Brotherauron · 2 pointsr/guns

Well, for sling and swivels, you can get the uncle mike's kit to replace the barrel take down knob to have a sling mount:

http://www.amazon.com/Uncle-Mikes-Detachable-Remington-12-Gauge/dp/B0002IOAQU

as for mounting it to the barrel, probably something like this would work. Might want to add some lock tight in there to ensure it stays where it is.

u/ushutuppicard · 1 pointr/gundeals

Yep, I'm holding out till someone comes up with an aftermarket option... Hopefully.

That or I might try to attach some swivel sling mounts like these
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXM86FJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_00JJAbZ5PVSWR

u/sdrawkcabbob · 2 pointsr/guns

Yeah those QD swivels are meant for a different sort mounting socket. You could buy other mounts and adapters for the stock and barrel to use them, or get swivels like this,
and loop through a sling like this.

[Additionally] As for a forward grip, look for one made for the 1913 Picatinny type rail. There’s literally hundreds...

u/RallyMech · 2 pointsr/1022

Buy something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BNLQQBQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002IOANI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And follow this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vqOzfSex94

You will not regret having sling studs on your rifle. I installed 3 studs on each of my carbines, forend left (sling), forend bottom (bipod), buttstock top left (sling). The tri-lock sling swivels are easy enough to take off for hasty sling. The slings I bought came with a clip on the buttstock end, but it was much too loud for hunting.

u/Szalkow · 5 pointsr/guns

Thank you! I was thinking i had to get something like this and then glue it in.

u/sk1ppr · 2 pointsr/guns

There is so much good shit on this sub, I rarely have to ask questions as a noob.

Although I will say I bought a 10/22 earlier this week and it would have been nice to know this: to mount a sling, you need to buy some of these, you'll also need a drill, 7/32" bit, 5/32" bit, and ideally a vise to hold the gun while drilling. Takes 5 mins, but woulda been nice to know.

Also the often referenced USGI sling was hard to come by for me, my army surplus store didn't even have anything which blew my mind. You'll probably have to get that on Amazon or similar too. The slings at most places are just for carrying as far as I can tell.

u/Bloombergtoadie · 2 pointsr/guns

Well the sling will come with qd points. A two point sling will have two qd mounts. The stock has one qd, and then the little mlok to qd. So if u buy this and mount it on an mlok slot on the handrail, then buy a sling that says it is a qd (quick disconnect) sling it will come with the mounts. Like this sling is a 2 point so it comes with two qd points. And then this is the magpul afg .

u/Neopolitan_Banks · 1 pointr/diyaudio

So an amp that is 50W rms is the most I would need? they're just going to be hanging above my desk with These or sitting on one of those foam isolation bricks.

Also because they are car speakers I'm fairly certain that there is more "open" space in the cavity of a car door than regular desk speaker. cause i remember when the mythbusters made an armoured car by placing Phone Books in the door cavity so should i cut a hole in the back to save on space? or should i just make it a bigger box?

u/quik1 · 1 pointr/longrange

There are a few variations on products like this one, not saying this is the best, but it gives you a starting point.

u/TubeMeister · 1 pointr/1022

Here are a few options that should fit the M-LOK slots at the front end of the rifle depending on what type of sling you are using:

QD

USGI

Standard Swivel (sold here as a bipod mount, but it should still allow sling attachement)

u/Shinyglobes · 1 pointr/GunAccessoriesForSale

If you have no qd attachment you’d need something like this

u/TeamFatChicks · 2 pointsr/longrange

I put one of these on my Ruger American Predator with a BT10

https://www.amazon.com/BLACKHAWK-Swivel-Stud-Picatinny-Adapter/dp/B004T14ZZW

It works fine. Hasn’t come loose.

GG&G and ACCUTac make something similar too

Edit: you probably want something like BT17 1913 Rail.

u/android_troy · 1 pointr/ar15

Uncle Mike's Non Tri-Lock Sling Swivels (Blued, 1-Inch Loop) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00162JLG0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_pvZzCbJEFS95R

Sling uses these swivels.

Looking for a QD that accepts these swivels.

u/JoshuaJake · 3 pointsr/appleseed

Just make sure it is cotton, not nylon.

This type of sling swivel (because you told us your gun has qd attachment points). Braudel Sling Swivel Mount Qd Quick Detach/Release 1.25",Heavy Duty Push Button Swivels (2X QD Sling Swivels) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MXYWFE4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_YUkDCbSMRXNM8

u/Piestrio · 16 pointsr/guns

You can absolutely put a sling on it.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000H6NJ7I/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1475203288&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=sling+mounts&dpPl=1&dpID=41RP16XCdYL&ref=plSrch

Just grab that (or find a kit with 1 1/4" loops) and follow the directions in the package. You'll just need a drill and some epoxy.

Don't worry, you're fine.

u/HisNameWasSethGreen · 2 pointsr/longrange

These studs worked great for my 10/22. No problems drilling into my wood stock.

u/ohemeffgee · 3 pointsr/guns

I want to do an Appleseed event and I've got a 10/22. Most of the process of turning it into a LTR is straight-forward but I'm getting stumped on the swivel studs for a USGI sling.

Can someone tell me exactly which Uncle Mike's product to get that will appropriately address this? I am told that I need 1 1/4" sling mounts, not 1".

EDIT: Ordered these based on reviews: http://www.amazon.com/Uncle-Mikes-QD-115-RGS/dp/B0009TTROW

u/FoosYou · 2 pointsr/1022

If you've got sling mounts on your stock, you can get everything else you need from the Appleseed store -
Sling, Swivel set, Tech Sights and Adjustment tool.

I also had to install the swivel mount screw in my stock.

u/MyUsernameIsJudge · 1 pointr/guns
u/SuperiorRobot · 2 pointsr/guns

The swivel is mounted on a stud in the stock. I bought these and installed them.

Recently (this Saturday) did some work to convert mine to an LTR. Still waiting on the sling mounts, but here here's mine: http://imgur.com/a/34ePZ

For the curious, here's all of the modifications:

Eagle 30rd banana mag
http://www.slickguns.com/product/ruger-1022-22lr-30rd-banana-mag-new-eagle-799

Forgot what kind of sling I got. It's nothing fancy. The eagle magazine had some weird plastic bit on it to "assist" is removing the mag but it prevented it from fitting. One swift hit with a large rock took it right off though.

Also avoid Remington golden bullets. I say it all the time but they are crap. I had jams every 5-10 rounds. I'm currently using federal's bulk ammo and haven't had a single bad round.
