OK. I think our hair types are similar. I now have long hair, but I've been growing it out from a pixie cut for a little under two years, so I've recently experienced the frustration of not knowing how to style mid-length hair. After a lot of research, here's what I've found works well for me at most lengths:

  • Clarifying shampoo. My hair gets stringy throughout the day, and if you start out with buildup from products and pollution, that's only going to exacerbate the problem. Using a clarifying shampoo basically gives you a clean slate every day. I use this Neutrogena stuff, but any old brand will do.
  • Paul Mitchell 'The Conditioner' Leave-In Treatment. This is the only conditioner I use, and I use it no more than twice a week. It's a high-protein leave-in treatment and it makes my hair feel strong and smooth, but my stylist warned that using it too often can dry out your strands.
  • Joico JoiLotion (formerly Joico I.C.E.) Sculpting Lotion. If I'm planning to style my hair, I'll use a little of this with The Conditioner. It gives a really nice shiny depth to my strands and it adds a little extra support to styles.

When I use all this stuff in a blow-dry routine (I use a newer Conair hairdryer with a cool shot button and a 2" stiff-bristle round brush), my hair looks awesome all day, and taking those steps also prep your hair for more complex 'dos. (Really, though, you're passing a lot of dirt and grease into your locks with your hands, so you should try to break the habit of playing with your hair all the time.)

As far as styles go, I found the tutorials at Hair Romance inspiring. Her e-book, "30 Hairstyles in 30 Days", is $10 and has great step-by-steps and instructions for many useful techniques that I've used to create original styles. FYI, her hair is on the thicker side and has a lot of texture, so you might want to do as I did and acquire and learn to use the following:

  • Teasing comb and styling brushes. As long as your hair is healthy, this is the best way to add lasting volume to your hair at the root and create the illusion of having more and longer hair in ponytails and updos. If you can master teasing, you can get away with many styles that otherwise would only work with longer hair. (It's also a must for over-the-top 'dos for Hallowe'en!)
  • Texturizing products like OSiS Dust It! Mattifying Powder and ABL Pre Game sea salt spray. They'll help your hair grab onto itself and add extra hold without weighing down fine hair.
  • Small barrel clipless curling wand. I just picked up this Remington on the cheap at Target; I don't expect it to last forever, but it gets up to high heat (400+) and the texture lasts about three days without washing (respectively, curly; very wavy; somewhat wavy).

There are lots of great hair tutorials around the internet, too. Google around, or search "DIY hair" and "hair tutorial" on Pinterest. Go nuts!

Whew! I know there's a lot here, so let me know if you have questions. Good luck!

Aww this makes me want to hug you (I don't mean that in a condescending way, I just feel for you). Have you tried a curling WAND? It's super easy, you just wrap your hair around it. No clamp or pulling or anything. Plus it comes with a glove so your hand is protected from the heat (just don't get the glove wet or the heat goes right through it).

Just wrap about an inch or so of hair around the wand for like 10-15 seconds. I use this one and it works really really well. I suck at using curling irons and flat irons to curl my hair but I find this wand really really awesome. I use the highest heat. My best friend gave it to me as a birthday gift in like 2012 haha but I still use it every time I want to curl my hair. It's the best.

Also, when you let the curl go from the wand, just let it sit, don't brush it through right away. Let all the curls sit (even if you look like curly sue) for 10 mins or so until they are not hot any more, THEN use your fingers to gently run through them and break them up a little bit. Then hairspray!

If the curl still won't stay, try putting hairspray on EACH curl after you let it down from the wand.

Also try curling your hair 12-24 hours after you've washed it instead of right away.

This might be more wavy than you want but you could always get a three barrel curler. https://www.amazon.com/Alure-Barrel-Curling-Temperature-Display/dp/B06WRSWG6M

I think if you did this and pinned the one side a bit you could easily pull off the classic wavey style like in the Great Gatsby. You can get some super cute clips/pins too!

Definitely get a heat spray though. My favorite is Restyle by Burma, not sure if you can get it where you are but I have been using it for a few years. It smells nice and is cruelty free which is an added bonus!

Very happy with the purchase. I use for a year now, curls are well kept for more than one day. Since the temperature is regulated, it is suitable for different types of hair - my daughter do curls. The timer gives the opportunity, without overblown and overbearing, with pleasure to create beauty!

u/HemingwayJawline · 28 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

Thank you! I used this curling wand from Tigi! I just curl all my hair in random sized sections and then once I'm finished I just run my fingers through it to kind of mess it up a little and not have the curls be so defined and perfect looking. Sometimes I'll spray in some dry shampoo or texturizing spray if I have any on hand.

For this picture I just parted my hair in the opposite direction that I normally part it in (as in, I usually part my hair to the left and for this picture/look I parted it to the right). Parting your hair in the direction that its not used to being parted in seems to give you a good bit of volume. Obviously using a rattail comb to tease it helps to give more long lasting volume (I didn't tease my hair this day and my hair did fall a bit flat as the day went on but oh well).

Something else that I find useful is blow drying your hair with a round brush after you wash it. I've found this helps to reduce frizz and make your curls more robust looking.

Hope this helps! xoxo

It was an experience. Still have a pretty nice scar from it.

I did buy a rotating thing similar around christmas that was way cheaper, works really well, and has yet to burn me. This thing from KISS. It works great.

Thanks I just curled it with my Bed Head wand. I feel like it gives the perfect waves. This is the wand I use. http://www.amazon.com/Bed-Head-BH311-Raspberry-Conical/dp/B007ISRNCA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1407067443&sr=8-3&keywords=bed+head+wand I like any wand that isn't uniform in size because then each curl will be different and look more natural.

u/[deleted] · 4 pointsr/FancyFollicles

Thank you! I use a curling wand. It's incredibly quick and easy too! Best purchase I ever made for my hair, hands down.

u/aprilynn · 2 pointsr/FancyFollicles

Thank you! And I believe I use a 1 1/2 in round. I use a really crappy old one I'm not sure of the brand its like completely coated in hair products old…I actually need to get a new one soon. But when I'm at my parents I use my mom's Conair iron minus the wand that she got on sale at mejier for like $20 and it works great! When I use that one I feel my hair is much more sleek if that makes sense. As long as it gets hot that's all that matters :]

u/tarasometimes · 4 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

Got 2b Glued ....but please keep in mind this is some seriously powerful stuff..at least in my opinion. Don't over-do it, or your hair will just wind up gross and hard. But used correctly, this is the ONLY hairspray that will hold my curls. (and my curls never want to stay together)

Also, invest in a curling wand like this. I just got one of these a few months ago, and I adore it. It gives me way nicer looking curls than an old school iron.

Osir 1.5" inch straightener plates + control temp gutted and taped onto the straightener. The plates are melted into the pads for my clamp (they're the alternate wide ones instead of the regular pads like you see on everyone elses) and the circuit for the temp control I just taped back onto the edge of the clamp. I also carefully broke off just the plastic cover for the temp circuit so that way I could use the buttons. just used a bunch of electrical tape.

I'd give a full tutorial but I dont really have the money to go buy a bunch of stuff and then wait for it to ship again and all that. Theres a couple good tutorials out there on how to build one, just search "HMK Rosin Press" on google and youll eventually find something.

heres a link to the straightener (which I'd highly recommend despite what tutorials recommend, this has very accurate temp control settings) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010BBKVYC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thank you :) Being a type 3 person, I get a lot of limp ones in the back, and also probably because I'm letting my hair grow too long now :/ So I bought a wand to add definition to the frizzier ones, and the Revlon Ball Wand isn't half bad, the barrel is slimmer so it kinda mimics how your hair would form naturally :) This: http://www.amazon.ca/Revlon-Curl-Collection-Ball-Pounds/dp/B008QTHCTY

u/peachandcopper · 5 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

I have this curl wand. This is the only wand I've found that makes my hair hold the curl. I don't even have to use hair spray! And the curls last until the next day. I actually have the waving wand too and love that as well.

u/julia_adams · 1 pointr/TwoXChromosomes

Buy one! They're soo easy to use, but I had to look at a youtube tutorial at first because I couldn't get the hang of the technique. This is the one I bought, and my friend with naturally curly hair always comes over to fix up her curls because it works so well.

u/adi_iced_tea · 1 pointr/Hair

Get a curling wand - it's way easy to use, you legit just wrap your hair around it. the bigger the wand the more 'open' the curl. :)

u/heyredridinghood · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Its on your list but dang girl you should get a WiiU or the Zelda 3DS XL. drools

$20 item

n_n Thanks for the contest!

u/hcstuart · 4 pointsr/progresspics

Thank you so much!!

I took the clamp off of a curling iron I got from Walmart about 4 years ago and I use it like a curling wand.

It’s this one

u/I_See_Dead_Redditors · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I am a zebra on the inside haha

And I used a Wand :D

Thank you :D

u/wickvit1 · 3 pointsr/thebachelor

I would recommend using a curling wand instead of a curling iron. I wear my hair the same way and with extensions as well (yes, she definitely has extensions).

The curling wand that Kaitlyn and others advertise with promo codes is actually a really good one, but you can even get a cheap conair version at CVS and achieve the same look. I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Remington-CI95AC2-Collection-Digital-Ceramic/dp/B003V265QW

u/LXV · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

I use curlers. I do hot curlers, I have a waver iron type thing, I have one with beads down the barrel and I have a set of flexible straw type things I can leave in over night. My flat iron is too big to curl with so I have a bunch of different things I can use to curl my hair. I will link my favorite one below. It can wave your hair or curl it depending on how you use it.

That's why I bought this curling wand. It heats up in 60 seconds. Makes perfect ringlets.

u/adragonisnoslave · 1 pointr/FancyFollicles

fyi for those like me considering this - it's a buttload cheaper at amazon!

u/goingbawkerz · 3 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Please don't apologize!! It's Remington Digital Curling Wand - It's only 20 bucks!

u/sadukeanu · 3 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

Thanks, though I think the only reason they look vintage is because of my bangs. I use one of these.

u/pizza_rolls · 1 pointr/Hair

For these pictures I mostly used this.

But if you only want one size, I like this. Lots of temperatures so you can switch between waves and tighter curls.

u/PleaseStopCalling · 30 pointsr/instant_regret

There is definitely such a thing as curling wands. They're more tapered and don't have the clamp that ones sold as curling irons do. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003F2T0M4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_aUgGAb92DTKN3

u/Sarah6422 · 1 pointr/Hair

https://www.amazon.com/Bed-Head-Curling-Tousled-Texture/dp/B0092MCQZ4, looks like one of these , looks very undone , I’d do it when your hair isn’t to freshly washed.

u/imostlylurkhere · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

I have an embarrassingly large collection of curling wands, so can offer a recommendation on that front. Most recently I got this one, which is super affordable and should work on any length/texture of hair. Curls have lasted 3 days on me so far (my hair is belt length and generally holds a curl for 2 days, ymmv)

u/kerrebou · 2 pointsr/FancyFollicles

It's a Remington I bought on amazon.
Here it is!

u/rchiariello · 1 pointr/FancyFollicles

For what it's worth, I LOOOOVE this one. My hair is waist length and wavy. Curls usually fall out within a couple hours, but not with this!! I even love the way the 2nd and 3rd day curls look. I also have the Conair one and never reach for it anymore.

u/TrollznLolz · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I've gifted more than 60 people. Some of my gifted posts have multiple giftees (due to add-ons or I didn't want to clog the newsfeed) :)

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

How cute!

My item please!

u/nobueno1 · 3 pointsr/FancyFollicles

I have thin hair and the wand I use is a Remington CI95AC Salon Collection Pearl Digital Ceramic Curling Wand 1/2-1 Inch

For the price it's not bad at all.

If you want to go a little more expensive route, I've never used this but just watched a video on it and now I want it Nume styling set

There's also a Groupon for the same Nume set but cheaper

Not the best pic [but I'm the one in the right with blonde hair](Curls http://iob.imgur.com/uYGg/uF8z8IrNvy) and that's using the cheaper Curling wand.

Here's one more of when I curled my hair with the Remington

u/madelineqi · 2 pointsr/pics

Thank you! I curled it with a small curling wand and I used Pulp Riot color to color it.

[Here's the exact curling wand I used](Remington Pro ½-1” Curling Wand with Pearl Ceramic Technology, CI95AC4 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003V265QW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kIN2BbGW9WVC2)

u/MovesLikePepper · 1 pointr/MakeupAddiction

I used a curling wand and then just sort of brushed through the curls with my fingers. Since I have smaller curls, I blew my hair dry so it wasn't curled up, just sort of a frizzy mess before I curled it.

u/Miserablecollegekid · 1 pointr/femalehairadvice

I use this crazy looking curler since I’m terrible using wands or single barrel curlers and then I brush the out for a bit to make them look a bit loose and unintentional and then I spray it down with a medium gold spray! Sometimes I also use beach club by igk if I am going for the messy beach wave look.
