There’s a guy who replaced the two-piece steel spreader bars with DIY three-piece carbon fiber spreader bars, to make it lighter and pack down smaller… I haven’t done anything nearly so ambitious, but I’d like to give it a try sometime.

You will have to get a suspension system if you don’t have one already. I use these carabiners and Kammok Python Straps. You might need something different if you’re not hanging from trees, but the hammock doesn’t come with any kind of suspension system.

I set mine up with a four-foot Nite Ize Gear Line between the two attachment points at the top. Useful for storing small items out of the way (so they don’t end up sliding under your butt). It can’t take anything heavy, but I hang my keychain, glasses, headlamp, hat, gloves, etc. I also threaded the line with some battery powered fairy lights. It’s small, simple, lightweight, and bright enough to light the whole tent/hammock when I need it, without having to put on my headlamp. Maybe not bright enough to read by, but I read eBooks on my phone. The nice thing is, the Gear Line and lights can just be left in place and packed away with the hammock.

The inside has velcro anchor tabs along the perimeter. I use them to anchor some Reflectix under me as insulation. It really helps on any night below about 68 ℉ (which means most nights, even in summer), and the anchor points mean I don’t wake up to find the pad flipped around on top of me… again. I just used some velcro to connect to the hammock, flat bungee cord, and plastic tarp clips on the reflectix pad. I like having the pad just in case I have to stake it out on the ground as a tent. An underquilt would just flatten out and be useless. The Reflectix also acts as a barrier between me and the hammock fabric, so even if something pointy and metal ends up under me, it will only damage the pad, not rip through the hammock. My multitool, for example, likes to find its way out of my pocket. Metal rivets in jeans and metal zippers on hiking pants are also a concern… though the fabric is probably tough enough, I don’t want to risk it. The Reflectix is a nice padded barrier.

Just today, I rigged up an underquilt using… another hammock! A cheap rope/net hammock under the underquilt provides just the right kind of flexible tension across the whole bottom of the hammock to keep the quilt up under me. Like I said, I only just set it up today, so I still have to test it out overnight, but it seems to be working better than anything else I’ve tried so far (which always leaves an air gap, making the underquilt useless—especially as the hammock flexes). With spreader bar hammocks, underquilts are tough. This solution seems like it will work.

Lastly, I’ll mention simple DIY self-tensioning guylines. You can guy out this hammock to reduce swaying if you don’t like to swing in the hammock, or if it’s really windy, OR if you just find it too tippy and you’re afraid you’ll fall out. The self-tensioning lines allow for some give as the hammock moves, while still preventing you from freely swinging or tipping. I find it pretty stable and almost never use the guylines, but on windy days it’s nice to have so I’m not randomly swaying in the wind all night.

I own two Dutchware hammocks, a Single Layer 1.6 and a Double Layer 1.6. Think of stretchiness sort of like mattress firmness. My Double supports my heavy bits (hips, shoulders) a bit more than the single, where they tend to sink a bit. (I'm about 200lbs.) I switch back and forth every 2 months or so (I sleep nightly in a hammock). I've been considering a single layer Hexon 2.4 to have a "middle of the road" between the 1.6 and the Double 1.6.

I didn't buy the double because I wanted to use it with a pad, but it is a nice option. (I've got 2 underquilts anyhow). If you're serious about cold weather camping "more than once" or "more than infrequently", I'd highly recommend leaning towards an underquilt yourself. For $150, you can get a really nice 20°F Hammock Gear Incubator ECON.

"Wide" is not currently available at Dutchware, just standard width. Both of my dutchwares that I currently own are "Wide" (72") hammocks and while I like them, after spending a year and a half in them, I don't really see the need for extra width. Extra length of a dutchware (11') is more than sufficient for a good ASYM Lay. "Double" sized hammocks are a myth. Sure, you can fit two people in them, but do not for one moment think that co-sleeping in a hammock is any kind of blissful situation. Your heavy-and-hard bits will collide and when hips are force-taco'ed together, it get's sore and cramped quick. For a short siesta, no big deal, just not overnighting and napping.

As for a Rain Fly, I recommend looking on Amazon at the Hennessy Hex Fly. Coming in under $70, it's no the lightest, but it's well built and has great coverage. Watch out for those "deals" on amazon for no-name and "small brand mass produced clone" tarps as they're usually a bit small to accomodate a smaller hammock. Set up right, an 11' Dutchware will have a Ridgeline just barely over 9' long (83%). The Hennessy Hex fly has a ridgeline of almost 12', giving you roughly a foot and a half of coverage on both ends. This is a good all-weather tarp and will take you through a storm. After that, I'd consider a cheap "fair weather" tarp.

We went very unconventional with our nursery seating and hung a hammock chair. I didn't nurse in the baby's room when he was super little (or really use his room at all) but after the first few months we love this option. It's super space efficient when it's not in use and perfect for nursing, giving a bottle, storytime or rocking / swinging and very comfortable! We hung it next to the window and it will be an awesome reading spot when our son is older too.

The best use I have found for it is to move myself just a touch away from her and use my arms to pull her on to my erection. As the standing position also does, it take 100% of my weight off her body and allows her free access to play with her clit for maximum stimulation.

The one I have came from here.

I think that this one is a very budget friendly one that could be put up in a more open place like the living room and could be fun.

I would suggest also making sure that you buy a good quality spring for the connection for the last one and rated carabiniers if you plan to take it down.

When putting up ceiling hooks in shared places, potted plants hanging from the ceiling make a nice way to hide the more naughty uses.

We have a very active and enjoyable sex life :)

A quick note : if you haven't yet purchased the ENO Doublenest, you might consider getting a longer one. Try hammockforums.net for advice. Also keep in mind that Dutchware will sell you a 10' hammock in polyD fabric for $33 + shipping, 11' for $35. Last I checked an ENO DN was like $70, so even if you got a full suspension from Dutch as well you'd only be a few dollars more than the ENO (and you'd have an actual high quality suspension).

As for the stands:

Both of those stands are really short. At 6'3" I believe you'd be generally recommended at least an 11-foot hammock, which neither of these will support. I have a Byer/Amazonas Vario hammock stand, which can be adjusted from 11' up to 15'. I think those are getting harder to find, but REI and Amazon both sell what appears to be its successor, the Byer Ceara. It costs a little more than either of your linked stands, but if the build quality is anything like my Vario, it's worth it. Most importantly, it is adjustable and the minimum length will actually be comfortable for someone your height.

If you're interested in building one yourself, this Google search should get you to hammockforums.net, which has a huge variety of options. The Turtledog/Turtlelady stand is probably one of the most popular designs, but it has been a couple years since I've looked into it and I'm sure they've come up with some new stuff since then.

Edit: One other option is to hang the hammock directly on the walls. Depending on how old or shoddily made your house is, and how your room is constructed, this may be a tricky proposition; but many people have had success screwing eye bolts into studs and simply hanging a hammock off them. The huge upside to this is that you have absolutely no hardware taking up floor space when the hammock is not in use; you just push it over to one and you have the full floor space of the room available to you.

Be warned though, some people have done things like pulled walls out of alignment, torn holes in the wall or old studs, etc. So do some due diligence on the construction of the house if you're going to try this route.

I think a https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AXN3HG8 is a good choice. If you're cash tight and want something for inside, this is a good $50 solution. Pairing it with a $40 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0167IYGH6 underquilt works well.

I have a friend who has back issues and I gave him that hammock after testing it out and being pretty pleased with it. He's been full-timing it for what must be around 6 months now and loves it. I've been full timing for ~8 years.

The reason I would dissuade you from getting a dual function hammock is primarily because you'll need a lot more equipment to sleep outside and it can add up. I think it's better to get a great bang for the buck for inside if that's your primary use case.

u/Blythe703 · 2 pointsr/hammockcamping

In the 30 dollar range I would say most of the amazon ones will be pretty similar. Though anything that you get as a feature is probably a cost cut somewhere else.

Something like this might be a good start. It has tree straps with it, but I would strongly recommend getting a ridge line somewhere. Arrowhead has some adjustable ones that you can take with you between hammocks if you get into it and want to get a nicer one. There is also Dream hammock for a bit less and will make it to the length of your hammock. Usually you want your ridge line about 83% of your hammock length, and they are easy to make if your up for it and have some amsteel laying around.

This all works for body and suspension, but do know that under insulation is important if you're sleeping in it. You can use a cheap foam pad or camping pad if you want to save money.

I'll second the Brazilian hammock suggestion. I'm a warm sleeper and the all-cotton nature seems to be the most comfortable to me.

I've slept in a Mayan as well, which is also very comfortable. I don't care for the materials used in camping hammocks, though, so those are off
my list.

I use a small pillow behind my head and a tiny pillow under my knees. I also was a stomach sleeper, but find I can sleep quite comfortably on my back diagonally on a hammock. The head being slightly higher helps.

I don't bolt mine into the walls. I have a compact hammock stand. It's similar to this one. I find a good cotton Brazilian hammock will last about a year or year and a half and then I replace it when it gets too stretched out or some of the strings start fraying. You can buy a good one for $50-125 though, which I think is reasonable for a year's worth of good sleep.

u/Spurnk · 1 pointr/CampingandHiking

Sorry if this format comes out terrible and for lack of metric conversions

The hammock was incredibly cheap and durable, about $25 I've had it for 2 or 3 years now. I will probably upgrade for more room but honestly for giving it a try I so recommend it. Folds into a bag about 8inches ( like a bundled flannel) 1.5 lbs

Basic rainfly, last minute purchase they gave options of medium or large and happy I went with large. Site says 124x 96 inches . Same bundled size and hammock. It was cold and this kept wind out just fine, haven't used it in rain though.

Heavy duty straps, not necessary but I like them. Makes me feel more secure and are extremely easy and fit most trees.

Got this on a huge discount! I fold into a thin 9inch square about 3 inches deep. For hammocking I will probably invest in a pad with high sides because when you move in the night you absolutely feel where the pad is and is not.

I used this for 6 months as my bed, I've built stands before and they work well enough but this one is nice and sturdy (Zupapa 550LBS Capacity Universal Multi-Use Steel Hammock Stand, 2 Person, Fits Hammocks 9 to 14 Feet Long, Adjustable Heavy Duty Hammock Frame https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JRWHNE2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aI6rDbP6EK3DR) , there is a stand that Walmart sells that is $50 and folds out, it works pretty well but if you're over 200 lb it may not last, mine lasted around 2 months of daily use and then just bent in half when I got in it one day. The Amazon one is great, heavy duty enough for two people and packs down into a small bag.

u/scoobysnatcher · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Looks legit, but their site doesn't show any USA retailers, even online. :/

Well, except for this: https://www.amazon.com/Amazonas-Paradiso-Hammock-Double-Terra/dp/B001ECQ6LU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1499628431&sr=8-2&keywords=amazonas

And, that luxury one looks awesome. But too rich for me, as well!

I went with a ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1-Person Tent for sleeping with a Camp Solutions Lightweight Self-Inflating Air Sleeping Pad. Had a 40 degree bag/quilt from Walmart since I was traveling in August time frame.

Took this chair that really came in handy Moon Lence Outdoor Ultralight Portable Folding Chairs with Carry Bag Heavy Duty 242lbs Capacity Camping Folding Chairs Beach Chairs

Cooking set I used was 12pcs Camping Cookware Stove Canister Stand Tripod Folding Spork Wine Opener Carabiner Set Bisgear(TM) Outdoor Camping Hiking Backpacking Non-stick Cooking Non-stick Picnic Knife Spoon Dishcloth. It was good enough for the 3 weeks on the road and im still using it to this day.

I just put all that into a waterproof 45L bag I had and then shoved my clothes into a backpack on top. Jerry rigged a canvas bag on the side for quick access things like tools and such. The net thing on top of my bags was very very helpful as well. A relatively cheap and comfortable option is the GT nano 7; http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Hammock-Reviews/Grand-Trunk-Nano-7

It is my favorite hammock, because I like lightweight, small gear. It comes with a couple of carabiners at the ends, but those are meant to be replaced with a more permanent suspension (I added whoopie slings, which are slightly expensive to buy, but cheap and easy to make if you have a sailing supply store nearby). The result is a modular hammock; the hammock itself is very light, so I can take it by itself to a lot of places, but the insulation and bugnet are carried separately, which means that I can customize for each trip. Last weekend, I took it camping with my girlfriend, and we had some extra insulation but no bugnet.

If you are looking for a first hammock, you might just want to get something cheap with a built in bugnet. In the UP in the summer, bugs are going to be a serious problem for you. I started with this one, and used it for a week long trip in Russia: http://www.amazon.com/Byer-of-Maine-Moskito-Hammock/dp/B00092M246

As Zooshooter suggested, Hennessy and Warbonnet are some of the more comfortable options that would be sold complete with everything you need (except insulation).

u/rm-minus-r · 7 pointsr/Hammocks

Can you? Totally! Will they stretch? Possibly.

I have this one - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JRWHNE2/ - it came with a chain on each end to attach to the hooks, works like a charm.

Chain doesn't stretch either, so if it's a semi-permanent setup, it doesn't hurt to get two short lengths of chain from your local Home Depot or Lowes or the like.

For anyone wondering, I think it's an Ikea ekorre hanging chair. They don't have it listed on Ikea's website anymore, but this type of thing:

https://www.amazon.com/Ekorre-Swing-Hanging-Hammock-Silver/dp/B002XPNMFU

Kind of funny because ekorre means furry hanging sack in swedish. ^^not ^^really

u/Chiisapeake · 3 pointsr/Hammocks

I know you said good hammock, not cheapest hammock that works, but I have this: https://www.amazon.com/Lazy-Daze-Hammocks-Portable-Carrying/dp/B01J9K5S94/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=lazy%2Bdaze&qid=1557578230&s=gateway&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1

Thats a good price if you want a stand with it for the price.

I sleep in it every night and haven't had a single issue and its comfy. Some of the comments say it arrived broken but mine didn't and you could probably just return it. Its easy to set up too.

If you're just looking for a hammock for $150 then probably not this.

These straps will do everything you want and more. They're only $12, and totally worth the buy. I hope this helps!

I was sure I was the first person to create a hitch hammock. The frame of the hammock/chair would hook onto the ball hitch of a truck while the seat was suspended over the ground. I even drew up a schematic and counted all my chickens before they hatched.

My heart sunk when I seen one at a tailgate party.

I'm debating on making space for one of these or a couple of these. The ability to lay down off the ground and outside a tent would be nice.

FYI I just bought this hammock stand and it came in the mail a couple days ago. I haven't used it yet but it looks exactly like the one you are planning on buying but half the price. https://www.amazon.com/OnCloud-Portable-Universal-Carrying-Capacity/dp/B01JP1CI6I/ref=sr_1_4?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1487468006&sr=1-4&keywords=portable+hammock+stand

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00092M246/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But it looks like the price has gone up in the last 2 years.

I don't think those hammocks with the bug net only over your face would be sufficient. I like the full netting and a sleeping pad on the bottom.

Currently I'm using right this now I got it around $49. It folds up pretty quick too.

It comes with a really nice bag to store it in as well. I use it with my 11ft and 9ft hammocks both indoor and out.

Took only Five days to get it but was in the warehouse for 3 days just waiting.

Hell yes I wanna help!

String fairy lights.

A cool hanging lantern.

A corner shelf cause you can never find anything to put in the damn corner!

A little friend to keep you company.

Some snazzy rope lights (we have them in the bedroom. very cool).

Ceiling stars because screw you there awesome.

Don't act like you wouldn't want one.

And this so you can talk on the telephone while lying in bed.

And this so you can blow dry your hair while you talk on the telephone.

For those who are curious, it's a Byer Paradiso hammock.

I slept in the hammock last night (we have guests over and they took my bed) and I have no complaints. The sand under the hammock could be a bit more level so that the whole thing doesn't wobble but it's only 2-3 degrees tops.

What kind of hammock do you prefer? Something like this? or this?

I'd buy one of these and either some good books or some mobile games

It might be good for camping or tailgaiting. I'm sure it ridiculously expensive. Yup, it is https://www.amazon.com/Hammaka-Trailer-Chairs-Wooden-Dowels/dp/B00B3LPHUS

This will be my first time out on the playa and I'm looking for anyone in this thread to tell me if this is a terrible idea before I commit to it:

Instead of a tent, I'll be using a hammock on a fold-out hammock stand and I'll be draping fabric from my car to some stakes in the ground around me to avoid the sun and hopefully the majority of the dust. It'll all be facing west so that in the morning the sun will be on the other side of my car, which will have a windshield reflector on it so as to not allow the sun to shine through the windshield, out the back, and directly into my sleeping area.

I started using hammock straps and soft shackles to attach the rings since I had them already and didn't have a suitable marker. I kinda like the setup.

Here's a good beginner option. It's about twice the weight of the Dutchgear, but about half the price.

We bought this one recently, and even found a way to make it work for bunk bed hammocks, WITH a bug net. Highly reccomend!
