Wooooo okay! Here's 1-20, and I will give the bonus ones a go in just a few minutes! fear cuts deeper than swords

1.) Something that is grey. How about a knife set?!

2.) Something reminiscent of rain. Cinema Paradiso! The cover of it is two people in the rain :) (Movies wishlist)

3.) Something food related that is unusual. This Manatea infuser is unusual! (Default wishlist)

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. (Yes, pets count!) I have a pet wishlist and a wishlist for my best friend! This traveling litter box is the perfect combination--it's so I can take my kitty on trips to my best friend's place! (Kitty wishlist)

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! Why have just one book when you could have 3000?! This little usb is loaded with over 3000 classic novels. Yes, almost all of these novels are free on Project Gutenberg, but having them all in one spot ready for you to peruse is amazing. You're almost guaranteed to find a book worth reading that you haven't read yet! (Books wishlist)

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! Well, not a physical item, but I have an mp3! (Music wishlist)

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...) Kitty nail caps! I have a sphynx, so I have to clip her nails roughly every week (otherwise when she scratches herself, she cuts herself up D:). Nail caps are a cute and more hassle-free way of dealing with her claws! (Kitty wishlist)

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. This one is pretty tough for me, actually--I love purposeful items! However, I already have a cheese grater, so this hedgehog shaped one isn't actually something I NEED--it's just so cool!! (Default wishlist)

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Life is Beautiful. It's a sweet, touching, and heartbreaking story of a Jewish father trying to keep the joy in life in a concentration camp. It's laugh-out-loud funny, and so sad you'll cry. Definitely worth watching. (Movies wishlist)

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. Packaged, high-cal foods will be really helpful! You have to keep your energy up while you're on the run, and you need a portable snack! These cookies are sure to give you the extra boost you need to escape the zombies. (Default wishlist)

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. Hmmm this is a toss-up for me. I need a laptop for life. I have a little chromebook, but when I need to update my resumes and write cover letters, I need to go to the library to use an actual computer to make sure the formatting is right. A laptop would help with the job hunt and (hopefully) help land me a job! (Expensive things wishlist) My other goal, to become healthier, would be helped by wrist weights to wear during my runs! No, it's not a huge amount of weight, but it will make my runs that much more difficult and help tone my arms! It's a small change with a big impact :) (Default wishlist)

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. Oh gosh, take your pick. Cat snuggie (kitty wishlist), sriracha (who doesn't love hot sauce?! Under $6 wishlist), a pumice stone (Under $6 wishlist), or a kitty laser toy! (kitty wishlist)

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? A $500 keyboard. I love playing piano, but I'm a young and flighty thing--I fully expect to be moving around a lot for the next 5-10 years, and I can neither afford an actual piano, nor can I imagine transporting one in and out of various apartments. This keyboard will give me the chance to practice and enjoy playing, but it's a much more compact and liveable way of doing so. (Expensive things wishlist)

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. A relatively cheap and yet still nice vacuum cleaner! Nice, easy to use, and practical :) (Expensive things)

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. A storm trooper USB! Cute and practical! (Default wishlist)

16.) Something that smells wonderful. Lavender chamomile bubble bath! I don't know about you, but few things smell more relaxing to me than lavender and chamomile, so a combo bubble bath just sounds like bliss to me. (Default wishlist)

17.) A (SFW) toy. Here's a whole bag of toys! And less than $10 too! My kitty would have a field day with all those toys :) (Kitty wishlist!)

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school. A lunch box! I always brought my lunch to school, so every year I got a cool new lunch box for that year :) These ones are super cute, and insulated! (Default wishlist)

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. I've had a life-long Disney obsession! (Movies wishlist) My whole bathroom is Mickey themed (default wishlist), and I'm always looking for cool new Disney items to add to my wishlist! I seriously love Disney.

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand. You too can own the Sword of Gryffindor! (Expensive things wishlist) Not only do you get to wield the weapon that destroyed three pieces of Voldemort's soul, it's also pretty practical! It's a letter opener that you can proudly display resting in the hands of a lion :) (Expensive things wishlist)

  1. I have a whole separate list for Add On Items :D

My feet have a ton of dead skin because I dance every day, and I miss having soft, baby smooth feet.

  3. Story time!

Once upon a time, there was a fly named Robert. Robert really liked this fly named Cindy. Cindy invited Robert to go to the fly-est spot in town, The Garbage Can. Now, Robert had never been to the Garbage Can, and so quickly called up his best friend, Sue Ellen, who was very kind and smart, but not very fashion forward. However, she was the fly that helped him with everything, so that's who he called.

"Quick, Sue Ellen! Cindy invited me to go to the Garbage Can with her! What should I wear?" Robert said as quickly as he could.

Sue Ellen was quiet for a moment, because she was in love with Robert, but never could quite muster up the courage to tell him. She loved being his friend, and didn't want to give up that friendship. Some days were easier, and some were harder (like today), but she was glad to have such a special fly in her life. And even though it hurt, she wanted him to be happy, and she knew that he really liked Cindy.

"...I don't know, fly casual" she said, and tried to make it sound as confident as she felt when she was flying alongside Robert.

"Perfect! Thanks Sue Ellen, you're such a great gal!" said Robert, not realizing how it tugged on Sue Ellen's little fly heart strings.

So, Robert got ready, as Sue Ellen cried into her pillow. Robert flew down to the Garbage Can, and met up with Cindy, as Sue Ellen drank some hot chocolate and curled up in a fluffy blanket.

However, when Robert showed up, Cindy's face went from beautiful and completely out of Robert's league to being quite distorted in disgust. "WHAT are you WEARING?" she shrieked.

Robert had put on his favorite band's t shirt, jean shorts, and a tie, to try to make it classier.

"I'm wearing my favorite casual outfit..." Robert replied meekly. "Don't you like it?"

"Ugh, I'm too embarrassed to be seen by you. This is the top black tie restaurant in all of Fly Town. How could you not possibly know? Haven't you been here before?"

"Well, no. It's invitation only, and I don't have a ton of popular friends..."

"Why don't you just go back home? Maybe I'll call you tomorrow."

With that, Cindy hooked her fly arm into the beefiest, hunkiest fly she could find, and laughed as she walked off. Robert, dejected and humiliated, walked over to Cindy's house, because he didn't want to face his roommates quite yet.

He knocked on her door, and she showed up with red eyes and ice cream in hand.

"What are you doing here?" she asked, trying to sound as normal as possible.

"No, first, are you ok? You look like you've been crying!"

"Oh that's nothing. Just allergies. You look really handsome by the way. I love how your tie matches your shirt, and those have to be your nice jean shorts! I bet Cindy will love it! I hope you have a great time" she exclaimed, wishing she was going with instead of with that stupid Cindy.

Robert's face fell at her comment, and then started to notice how pretty Sue Ellen really was. It wasn't blatantly obvious at first, but the way she wrinkled her nose when she smiled, and her long eye lashes... They all fit her perfectly. Plus, she had a wonderful personality, that Cindy never even once showed.

"Cindy was too embarrassed to be seen with me. But that's ok- I don't want to be with somefly who doesn't love me for the fly I truly am. I want someone who will play video games with me, and have flying races, nd knows how to make me laugh."

Sue Ellen started to smile, and from that moment on, Robert and Sue Ellen fell head over wings in love with each other. They eventually got married, and lived for a long time (in fly years). They even went to the Garbage Can once, and saw Cindy stuck with a million fly babies and looking not quite as amazing as Robert once remembered. But everyone lived happily ever after! The end.

Gifts I've given, or considered giving, over the years -- descending price order

u/living_vicariously · 5 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

Do you bite your nails? I ask because I used to bite mine really badly until about four years ago when I was finally able to quit for good and mine looked a lot like yours do now.

So the good news is that there are a few things that you can do to make them look better but the bad news is that it takes a really long time and you probably won't see much difference by the time you go to the wedding. For the short term, maybe consider press-ons? They've come a very long way since we were little and there are many out there that at first glance, look completely natural, even on less than perfect nails. Look for the ImPress brand (usually like $7-8 or so) and get ones that look pretty simple and natural like a french tip and unless someone is really staring at your fingers, I doubt they will notice!

For the long term, what I've done that's helped is to get into a nail care routine. Cuticle oil, nail file, orange sticks, and a cuticle trimmer or liquid remover are the tools you'll want. Two to three times a week (at least in the beginning, you can do it less frequently once they start to look like you want them to) take an orange stick and use the flat side to gently push back the skin around your nail. Some people oil them first to help soften them, I just usually do it after a shower while they're softer anyway. Then use the trimmer or liquid remover to get rid of the dead skin that's pushed back. I personally like this kind of trimmer but you have to be really careful that you don't accidentally cut the live skin. You're really just shaving away the dead skin with it. There's also this kind of nipper some people prefer and then there's the liquid stuff like this that dissolves the dead skin with no trimming required at all. It's all really just what you're comfortable with. Then oil them up when you're done, and if possible, oil them as many times a day as you can remember to. I try to do it at least once in the morning and once before I go to bed.

Then with regard to filing, let them grow out a bit more and like someone else suggested, file the sides down where they flare out, but only at the free edges. You should try to avoid cutting altogether. For rounder nail beds, a round shape tends to look better IMO.

So, forgive my awful MS paint skills but I drew on your pic a bit to help illustrate what I'm talking about. On your pointer finger, the spot that I circled is the area you're wanting to try to grow out and reattach to the nail bed. On the middle finger, I tried (I know, terribly lol) to illustrate how it would look after your cuticle line is pushed back over time and the nail bed reattaches along the sidewalls and then of course the white part is grown out and filed in a round shape. It all comes down to permanently pushing your cuticles back to expose more of the nail bed and allowing the sidewalls to reattach at the tips. Also, when you clean under your nails, be super gentle and don't push back the skin underneath - you want that to reattach to give you longer nail beds.

A lot of it just genetics and mine still don't look like nail blogger nails, but doing this has made a huge difference. I started really noticing results in about six months and now, you'd never know that they used to be super short. I still have some flaring on the sides, but I just file it away. I know this is like novel length, but mine used to look almost exactly like yours (except I had no white edge because I bit it all off lol) so I can totally relate to how you feel! I'd quit biting for a couple of months and then get so discouraged when they didn't look any better and just give up and bite again and it wasn't until I started really putting in the routine and effort that I was able to make it look better. I hope this helps! :)

Hello lovely! You seem to be doing awesome! I mean, they're already pink, you totally know what you're doing. ;)

Okay, so for the chipping so quickly, check out this super crappy video!. I never could find a close up of exactly how to do it on Youtube, so yeah. There's my face. This will help to extend the life of the top coat and thus mani! If it gets on your fingers, no biggie. It comes off in the shower or with acetone. :)

Here's what I use for a base coat, and generally for making my nails long and strong. Bats suggestion is another super common one! This one just happened to work well for me to help with chipping, so I figured kill two birds with one stone. I pair this with (I go through rotations and use what fits my needs...) either seche or this quick dry topper Poshe. Both seem to be nice, but I have noticed Poshe can be easier on the cuticle edges when it dries... Less pull of the coloring perhaps?

This is the set I use for clean up around the cuticle edges right now. The "ideal" is to paint a centimeter or something AWAY from the cuticle, then use the brushes (I dip in pure acetone) to perfectly clean up the line or round it out! The top coat generally should land/start in that blank space, so it's double effective to paint away from the edge initially. :D

Also, it will make a huge difference if you start pushing your cuticles back! I use this metal set because I'm irrationally terrified of getting splinters from the wooden ones. I use a cheap walmart cuticle softner before pushing back, but this is my dream formula since it's so highly recommended. BY pushing them back when you start to see them, it helps clear the nail and thus have less to let the polish stick to! Hurray! You're not supposed to use the scary looking scissor thingies too often, but I do use it on one very specific corner on my left thumb. I have one stupid stubborn cuticle skin flap that refuses to go away without being gently tweezed/cut off. I always make sure to wash with an anti bacterial soap immediately after and like to slather on some delicious cuticle oil LIKE PUMPKIN BANANA BREAD after to give them some softness again!

If you've got any more questions, I WOULD LOVE TO HELP YOUUUUU. <333

DON'T GO NEAR ILNP!!! Not if you want to build your collection up without spending a lot since their polishes are mainly $10 each...I may spend too much money on them because thy're gorgeous holos.

Howver if you want to get into gels for cheaps definitely get one of those Sally Hansen starter sets that comes with the lights they're around $20-30 depending on where you find them, This is a cheap one with the color "Wine Not?" so even fi you dislike the color you'll have base and top coat and the light to begin playing with it, they have others but as you can see the other colors are more expensive for no reason you get the same things only a different color. You may be able to find these in a place like Wal-Mart or Sally Beauty for cheaper.

As for acrylics never done them and never likes them so not any help there, but for tools here are some links to some good ones that are cheap. They may take a little ot ship but I will forego spending a ton for shipping in favor of having more to spend on stuff. Here's a cuticle set, I've got this and it works nice. And here is some dotting tools and little gems, there are definitely good review on these and I've ordered other supplies from this seller before. So if you want to branch out from one colors and do little splashes of designs these work.

You may also look into nail vinyls for doing patterns and such first then invest in some brushes for free hand designs later on since it gets easier then. For now get going on things and enjoy painting again, hope some of this rambling of suggestions helped!

> Should I apply jojoba oil on bare nails and act as a treatment for a few hours between polish changes? Even if nails are painted, is the jojoba oil still working or is this really more for the cuticles?

The benefit comes from consistent and regular use so you may do better using it right before bed (just for the sake of establishing it as part of your routine). You can apply jojoba whenever, it doesn't need to be in between polish. So yes, it will still work even if your nails are painted, because the benefit comes from it hydrating your cuticles, anyway. Jojoba will not penetrate all the layers of the nail plate whether it's bare of polish or not.

> Should I use my nail envy as a base coat? When I do that, my nails always peel. Can I put it on then use a base coat or is this too much??

I don't know anything about nail envy but I highly recommend duri rejuvacote 2 as both a treatment AND a base coat. When you say your nails are peeling, do you mean your nail polish chips off or that your actual nail is peeling?

> I’ve noticed some of my nails don’t even have “cuticles” to push back. Is this normal???

Yes, it's normal. The true cuticle can be naturally worn away. If your cuticles are extremely dry then they can also look as though they've vanished entirely. Example

> Similar to scalp massages, does massaging cuticles with oil help stimulate nail growth/health?

The "stimulation" is caused by increasing circulation in that area. More blood flow = more oxygen = healthier cells! I don't know that you really need to make a dedicated effort to massage your nails though, beyond what you do to apply jojoba or hand lotion.

> The dirt is so freaking annoying. Is there anything I can do to prefer the building up of dirt my nails tend to have or is it a waiting game for them to grow longer?

You can absolutely remove dirt, even from short nails, as long as you're not going to deep under your nail and you're not causing yourself any pain. I'd suggest using a nail brush, or an extra tooth brush, with warm soapy water, or perhaps an orange stick or a tool such as this, which can be sterilized.

> Speaking of dirt - WHY when my nails are growing out, polish free bare and I use oil/lotion they get dirty as hell?!?? It drives me MAD! WHAT IS THAT?!??

The joys of being a human!

> Is there such a thing as “ideal length”? Before when I got my nails barely past my finger tips (enough to make a tiny “tap” sound) they always broke. I LOVE that length, but they split and I go back to biting. Ugh.

An ideal length is whatever makes you happy (and, in my humble opinion, still allows you full use of your hands). Proper hydration will help allow your nails to grow strong AND flexible, which is key to preventing breaks. They need to be able to bend a little. Also, I'd highly recommend getting a glass file (as opposed to an emery board). It really helps to file down any catches/small rough parts of your nail tip so you can prevent larger splits/breaks.

I just picked up this old Lowe & Campbell referee's watch. Other than the crystal being really scratched up, it was in great shape, and it kind of worked.

I worked on it for a while yesterday. It just had a very simple problem, which was lucky. Not sure exactly what the movement is, but it looks a lot like most other dollar pocket watch movements - not a lot of screws and a lot of rivets. They weren't made to be taken apart.

I've seen these watches branded different things, but they all look the same.

The mechanics are pretty simple. It has a crown used to wind the watch and set the one (minute) hand, and a sliding lever at the 10-11 o'clock position that stops and starts the watch.

For basketball, it's broken up into two 20-minute halves, just like NCAA basketball today. Note that there's no other timing for basketball. There was no shot clock back then.

Football is broken up into 4 15-minute quarters with a red 'warning' bar for the two minute warning. Interesting that it startes at 5 min. left. I don't know much about old football rules. Did it used to be a 5-minute warning?

Regardless, the watch works as well as one could expect an inexpensive vintage watch to work.

I buffed all of the scratches out of the crystal the very best way I know how - with one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Shiny-Block-Buffing-Shine-Buffer/dp/B0037O2J7I

A couple of the scratches were pretty deep. I didn't think I could get them out, but I did. If you repair and restore a lot of vintage watches, those nail polishing blocks are a must to have around. I go through them. I buy them in boxes of 10 at a time.

Basically, you start with the #1 grit, which is the coarsest, and work your way up to four. You have to buff pretty fast and constantly wipe the old acrylic dust away.

Anyway, I just thought it was an interesting piece, and it combines my love of sports with my love of watches. Double whammy!

Enjoy!

Polishes - Brands

  • Essie

  • OPI

  • China Glaze

  • Sally Hansen

  • Sinful Colors (cheap, but good for colors she'll use a lot, like black and white)

    Polishes - Colors

  • White

  • Black

  • Pink (get more than one)

  • Nude/Cream

  • Her favorite color

    Tools

Don't worry too much about getting "the best tools" if she's just starting. As she starts painting, she'll realize what tools she likes and which tools she doesn't. Ebay/Etsy/Amazon $5 tools are fine to start out with.

  • Dotting tools

  • Brushes

  • Sponges

  • Stamping kit (if you're feeling fancy or advanced.)

    Misc

  • Mani/Pedi Kit (its possible she may have these tools, in which case skip this one.)

  • Nail File

  • Orange sticks (again, she may have these. Skip it if she does. Also she probably won't ever need 100, just wanted you to see what they were.)

  • Acetone or Nail Polish Remover (100% Acetone is much more concentrated than most polish remover, but it can be very drying on your skin. I use it for clean up, but if she's just starting out, nail polish remover should be fine.)

  • Cotton balls

  • Something to carry all this stuff in (I have a pink tool box, but a make-up box will work too)

I've given you a lot of stuff to check out, but don't run out and buy everything at once. I would pick 3 or 4 things from this list and go from there. For a very basic "start kit" I'd go for two colors of polish, dotting tools or brushes, a mani/pedi kit, and something to carry it all in. You can always get her more, or she can add to her collection herself.

    Best of luck!

Let me start by saying this: I would have included a before pic but I was so ashamed that I never took any pictures when I was constantly biting my nails/cuticles. I am in my early 20s and I've been doing this to them since before I can remember (early childhood). I first tried to stop around 14, and have struggled since then. It is such an ingrained stress response/habit that it's taken me years to retrain myself. It was easier to stop biting my nails and I haven't done so at all in 6 months, but my cuticles/surrounding skin are another story. This is something I still struggle with as it's triggered by stress and I don't realize I've started until they're trashed. However, since January it's happened less and less, now maybe once a month or less.

What caused the change in me? Honestly, it was never one single thing. I have been building my ability to resist for years. I realize this is cliche but one important thing is to never give up. I've had too many backslides to count, from 1 day to even half a year at the most. What's helped me is NEVER accepting defeat, and always eventually trying again. One motivating factor was that I've always wanted to have nice nails for getting engaged/married. It was in January that that became an event occurring sooner rather than later, so I will definitely say that has helped me stay focused!

There was one part of stopping the habit that scared me after years of constantly damaging my nails and cuticles: would they ever properly heal and grow back 'normal'? As of yet I still do not have one straight answer. I will say that the strength in my nails has improved, although it is slow going. I am still on the lookout for products to help with this, although I think only time will help. I also tend to have some nails which are very ridged, but they've also continued to smooth out. Finally, there is one cuticle I have which was permanently damaged in a way that's difficult to explain. Basically, it grows in three separate sections, almost as if it's cut. I was absolutely AMAZED when it started to grow 'connected' again! I will say this it sometimes splits still, but it is definitely progress and I hope one day it's completely healed. So, if you're in the same boat and worried permanent damage has been done, I can't make any promises but I will say it's amazing how well they can bounce back - even if it takes months or years to reverse it.

What helped me:

  • Homemade nail oil pens - all you need are empty containers and Jojoba oil
  • Burt's Bees lemon cuticle cream - I use this as extra moisturization/to 'seal' in the jojoba oil
  • Splitting/cracking nails? Use brush on nail glue - WAY more effective/simple than the tea bag technique for me personally!
  • 24/7 painted nails - letting them 'breathe' may be generally good advice, but I promise you biting them is more damaging
  • No nail clippers/glass files only - I cannot tell you how much this helped my nails to stay strong and not constantly crack/split

There is honestly so much more I could say but this post would be a book! I'm just taking the time now to sit back and enjoy all of my progress.

Well, you can start by taking a Biotin supplement or prenatal vitamins. Those will help speed up the growth of your natural nails. You'll also want to get a strengthening polish of some sort. OPI Nail Envy is popular, but I'm not sure what's available where you live. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Hand cream as often as possible. Apply cuticle oil at least once or twice a day. There are tons out there. File your nails gently, and if they're not too sensitive, buff the surface to even it out. Don't over buff it. It shouldn't hurt. After your nail surfaces are stronger and less sensitive, you might want to get a cuticle remover gel and some orange wood sticks. Apply the cuticle remover, let it sit for a minute, and then use the orange wood to gently push back any of the stuff growing up your nails. Wash your hands after using the cuticle remover, if left on too long it could burn your skin. Moisturize.

I linked some products on amazon. Just because I linked specific products doesn't mean that's what you have to use. It might take a little while to figure out the routine that works best for you, but you can do it.

u/letsgetknockedup · 9 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

Boy do I feel you. =/

I have horribly dry skin and my feet have tons of callouses, cracked skin, etc., and I know how shitty it is to go to a nail place feeling like your feet are hideous. And I, too, cut myself with the cracked skin. OW.

Here's what I'd suggest. First, drink more water because if you're dehydrated, that aggravates ALL skin issues.

Second, scrub. You don't even need some overpriced shit from the store. Get some coarse salt or sugar (like sugar in the raw style) and some olive oil. Make a paste out of it. Scrub it in like mad to each foot and then wash it off in warm water. Used coffee grounds also work great for this, but make sure you squeeze all the moisture out of them before you add the olive oil. And yep, just plain olive oil.

Third, get yourself a foot pumice stone. Something like this and they're usually under $5 at the drugstore or grocery store.

How to use that stone? Soak your feet in nice hot water for a few minutes, or use it at the end of the shower so they're nice & wet. Get the stone wet, and GENTLY scrub your heels and the really rough parts with the stone. Rinse it off as needed and when you're done.

And last? Moisturize like a crazy person at night. Get yourself a tube of foot-specific moisturizer like this from Burt's Bees, or anything along those lines. Slather it on thick and then put on a pair of socks designed to be used with lotion, like these. They make awesome bamboo gloves, too, if you have really dry hands.

Do the sock thing daily for a few days and you'll be amazed, but don't scrub your feet or use the stone daily. Go every other day on the stone (at most), maybe 2x/week with the scrub.

Also - side note on the cracked skin. If it's cracked to the point of bleeding, DO NOT use the scrub or stone or lotion on that part. Instead, apply something like Neosporin and keep it covered so it can heal. Never, ever do the scrub/stone on broken skin like that.

Favorite memory from the year: Going back to DDO it may seem silly to be happy about going back to a game, but I had a lot of friends there, and the welcome back I got when I went back made me feel welcome and missed and maybe a little bit awesome.

Past halloween: When my mom would dress up for halloween. There was one year her and I were both gypsies. She'd bought the skirts, but we had the shirts, and she had the scarves and spangly jewelry and i was loaded with clicking and bright necklaces as bracelets etc. It was awesome. It was the only year we dressed the same.

I am looking forward to hitting the halfway mark of my weight loss. 2 more lbs to go! then I'll have lost 50 and have 50 more to go! I will probably dance that week! XD

Crystal nail files

u/xkisses · 1 pointr/lacqueristas

Maybe too late, but here's my setup:

I bought this light and it's amazing. Large enough for all fingers and very durable.

This cuticle pusher/gel polish scraper

Any type of nail dehydrator (just look for "Natural Nail Dehydrator", any brand is fine.

I'd also buy a topcoat and basecoat, and a couple basic colors. I'd recommend Gelish or CND. Let her choose additional colors if she wants.

Other necessities - which you may have around the house: Acetone (full-strength), cotton balls, rubbing alcohol, orange sticks, nail files.

I'd stay away from kits, as I found it's better to buy the best-quality stuff individually; inevitably a couple parts of the kit will be kinda crappy.

I'd also recommend putting it all into a bingo bag. Yeah, you can find lots of "nail kits" and "nail bags" but I swear I found this bingo bag on sale and it fits EVERYTHING perfectly. Like this one

Any other questions, please ask. I've been doing my own gel nails for a long time, and have worked with a lot of products and tried just about everything. :)

u/notpandora · 7 pointsr/DIY

I just wanted to add 1 more tip - I also have nails that tear and crack if I just apply polish, but what I've found works well for me, as an amateur-at-best nailpolisher, my routine is:

EDIT I forgot a step which I think is important:

0. After removing old polish and washing nails in warm water then drying them, I use one of these buffer blocks and make sure to do it well. I think it has a big effect on my nails not chipping and it's much gentler than an emery board.

  1. Sally Hansen Cuticle Oil Which can help if you get those straggly little cuticle tears just above your nailbed.

  2. Nailtiques Formula 2

  3. Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Base Coat

  4. (Through N-1) Apply colored polish, glitter, whatever.

    N. Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Top Coat

Yes this is gonna take a loooooooooooooong time, but after a week I have very few chips, my nails are able to grow a little, and I am excited to put a new coat on rather than just desperate to get the current one off. Maybe it sounds like too many coats, I am not a nail polish scientist, this is just the process I developed independently that works for me.

And that said, now I feel totally justified in going and buying some new polish today as my meager collection has yet to require a DIY storage cart!
u/cutecutecute · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I'm not one to typically recommend products, but this thing is amazing for removing callouses on feet. It's cheap, and is rated very highly. Kinda heavy duty, so you don't want to overdo it, but holy crap you'll be amazed at all the skin it shaves off (yes, shaves; think cheese grater.) Just be sure to follow up with a heavy-duty moisturizer afterwards and slap some socks on. Personally, I love Bag Balm; after one night with that stuff on your feet, they're literally transformed (well, softer.) :)

Bottom line: pumice stones and the like didn't do much for me. This thing turned my feet into soft-omg-can't-stop-touching-them overnight. Nothing works better. Oh, and be sure to use it on DRY feet.

u/sbslavex · 1 pointr/feminineboys

Hint: push back and trim the cuticle (here's a tool for it: https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Cuticle-Clipper-Stainless-Springs/dp/B01G6Y376W/) - this keeps the polish from glomming onto your skin. On your toes, especially, don't overlap the edge of the skin - this "seals" the nail, making them much harder to dry out and making it easy to get a fungal breakout (which looks really unsexy). There are anti-fungal polishes that you can use as a base for your toes.

Paint your toenails only for special occasions to avoid messing them up. If you want your fingernails to look good, practice keeping them nice, and use a clear nail polish like a strengthening polish - if you get "caught" you just say you like your nails to look nice and this protects them.

If you get "caught" with a very pretty color, your only excuse is that you're a femboy, so just own it in that case. :)

u/love_an_ood · 1 pointr/RandomActsOfPolish

To address all your points:

I have the worst habit of not washing off nail polish remover and I never thought about the effects it could be having on my nails. I'll force this into the front of my mind!

I've heard about the electric toothbrush + shea butter method before so now seems to be the best time to give it a go!

...now realizing it's been forever and a day since I've taken my vitamins.

I've gotten a lot better with picking hangnails ever since I noticed how weak my nails are. It's a blessing and a curse I suppose. I'll keep them nice and trimmed just in case!

I definitely know what you mean about the "against the grain" part, but what does it mean to be filing "from the outside in"? Is it just the direction you file in so it's not against the grain?

I've heard a lot about these orange wood sticks but I have literally no clue what they are lol. I suppose that would be these but what exactly do you do with them? How far back would you push the cuticles?

I've never heard of the Mavala product, I will definitely pick some up this month. It sounds amazing and easy to use!

I feel the exact same way about wearing polish!! My confidence has increased so much since I quit biting but i still feel self-conscious without polish on.

u/nyurla · 1 pointr/RedditLaqueristas

i'd recommend getting a well-made crystal nail file like this: https://www.amazon.com/OPI-FI031-Crystal-Nail-File/dp/B000PHKE0O

using a nail oil a few times a day will keep your nails healthy and flexible, which prevents breaking or snapping. i like to use the oils from this etsy shop called VibrantVinylsShop (so many scents to choose from! and the cuticle oil is great to massage into your nails as well.)

as for shaping, from the photo your thumb, index and middle finger nails are round while the ring finger is rounded at the tip but has sharp corners on the sides and your pinky finger is square with sharp corners. these sharp corners are the reason for the breakage. squoval is meant to have a flat tip. a rounded tip isn't squoval, even with squared edges.

here are 5 common nail shapes: click here for pic as you can see, even the square shape has somewhat rounded corners while still retaining the shape.

i would recommend gently filing the sharp corners, just enough that they aren't super sharp, then let your nails grow out a bit before trying to re-shape them. my hands are similar to yours and, before i took up guitar, my nails were round/oval. https://imgur.com/T2Jfw4R the way i filed my nails, with my crystal nail file, is with gentle pressure in one direction in the shape of a "U" around the nail tip.

so yeah, give your nails a rest from the filing for now. soften up the sharp corners on your pinky and ring finger nails. let your nails grow out so the tips are above your fingertip, then (gently) re-shape them to the length and shape you want. :3 try squoval first if you wish. if you truly don't like the flat tip, it'd be easy enough to simply file corners to make them round. :D

u/starcatie · 2 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

Cuticle cream helps A LOT. It keeps your cuticles from getting dried out and gross, which can be a big problem when you do your nails a lot (nail polish remover dries them out super bad). I use Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream and love it! it works well and smells good too :)

Also try to use non-acetone nail polish remover rather than acetone as much as possible. Sometimes its hard to avoid (like with glitter) but acetone is much harder on your nails/cuticles. I like to keep a big bottle of non-acetone remover which I use the majority of the time and a small bottle of acetone for especially tough manicures ;)

As for your actual nails, invest in a glass nail file like this. It will help prevent your nails from splitting or breaking. Filing in one direction helps with this as well.

Hope this helps! :)

Before bed, I use a callous remover like this every few weeks, or when needed. It looks like a cheese grater for your feet, but it works wonders! I have also used electric versions like this, which are great if you don't have a lot of time to spend. But honestly, the chess grated looking callous remover works better!
Then I follow up with a thick, heavy moisturizer (Vaseline is inexpensive & works very well), and put on cotton socks to sleep in. In the summer, my feet tend to get rough much faster, so I also will do a quick scrub at the end of my shower every few days with a pumice stone.

I was a CHRONIC nail biter. Like you would puke at the site of my nails. I bit them past the quick and they bled quite often. I quit in Jan of 2010 and while my nails still aren't super strong, they are WAY stronger than they were when I was shredding them to bits. I would recommend you use this Sally Hansen nail oil, it has Vitamin E in it which is great for strengthening your nails and the product itself is also inexpensive. If you want to spend a little more, you can buy Nailtique, which I hear works wonders though I never used it at $30 a bottle. I would also recommend some good old fashion patience in letting them grow out. Good luck!

I've always had this problem. Try taking some supplements. There are a few hair/skin/nails supplements that can help, but I've found a few things that really help.

  1. Don't pick off your polish. This was my biggest problem. I love doing it, especially with glitters, and this ruins the top layer of your nails.

  2. Buy a strengthening base coat. I've used several of them. Out of all of the one's I've tried OPI Nail Envy seems be the best for my nails. If you ever skip polish, a few coats of this will help seal the flakes and harden the nail so it doesn't break off as quickly. If you are painting your nails--it makes a great basecoat and prevents the polish from staining your nails. http://www.amazon.com/OPI-Original-Nail-Envy-Strengthener/dp/B000ORNKHY/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1372775387&sr=1-1&keywords=opi+nail+envy+nail+strengthener

  3. Like u/paper_paws said -- file in one direction. I have a 4-sided block buffer that I use at most twice a month to file down the ridges and buff out the flaky areas if they get bad. http://www.amazon.com/Shiny-Block-Buffing-Shine-Buffer/dp/B0037O2J7I/ref=sr_1_4?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1372775474&sr=1-4&keywords=nail+buffer

As someone who bit their nails for ~24 yrs I now agree with this entirely. Glass files are great. Clip and file after you shower, it softens your nails. takes some time to get better at it but the long smooth/curved strokes are key.

EDIT: good nail clippers are helpful. They are sharper and leave a cleaner cut. You might say why would I spend so much on clippers I can get them for $1. Because you are trying to do a better job taking care of yourself that's why.

Great tip!

I believe that the item you are referring to that will remove calluses is called a pumice stone in English. This is an example of one: https://www.amazon.com/Cuccio-Earth-Lava-Pumice-Stone/dp/B0018MQHO2

A pumice stone is essentially just a porous and abrasive stone that is good for particular types of scrubbing. Calluses on the human body are a great target for pumice stones.

Hope this is helpful for you in learning English terms and useful to other bodyweight fitness practitioners who might need to rub away a callus!

  1. Do you pick at them? Roll your index fingers over them? Bit/Chew on them? Maybe there's a habit you need to correct.

  2. Can you think of anything you do that might dry out your skin?

I cut large stacks of paper at work and it took me ages to figure out the paper dust was demolishing my skin. Not only that but hardwater and cheap soap weren't helping either.

Now I moisturize every time after washing my hands, take fish oil tablets, and make sure I'm getting enough calcium. Diet makes a difference. :)

They mostly look dried out and as /u/Rootman points out below a cuticle cutter will help you maintain them. If your hangnails get too long they will constantly tug and tear at the base of your cuticles and they'll never get a chance to properly heal. Good luck!
u/Yeargdribble · 3 pointsr/trumpet

First off, drink more water. Keeping hydrated will help a lot.

Secondly, take care of your lips with something. I have a tube of Burt's Bees basically everywhere. In my horn cases, in my cars, in my office, on my nightstand... it's always available if I'm even feeling the slightest bit of something goofy going on. Also, look into different things if your chapstick isn't working for you. Different lip balms work differently and have different effects on different people. Here's a nice article that talks about some of these things.

Third, get a gentle pumice stone. While I do take good care of my lips, I'll occasionally get a bit of film of dead skin irritating me and I just use a gentle pumice stone with some water and exfoliate the outer layer. Did I say gentle enough times?

I use something more like this, not like this.

u/Khirsah01 · 2 pointsr/ehlersdanlos

Omg the fragile skin is so horrible... I had to stop cutting my nails with a standard clipper trimmer and had to start filing (very carefully at first) with glass files so there's no scraggly or sharp ends as my skin slices easily. I used to draw blood regularly trying to pick up small fiddly things, even pills! I still bump into furniture and find blood on my legs or arms though.

I also seem to have fewer nail breaks since keeping with the filing. A gentle pressure and a good glass file where the filing grit is etched into the glass is great! I also have an older metal file that I find is best for finishing, but I can't find more of that wave surface type. It made the free edge shiny smooth and impossible to catch on things.

Once I get to my PC, I'll edit this once I get links for the glass files I use and see if I can find info on the metal file.

Well I use a straight clipper like this one.
And what I do, which has about a 80% success rate, is clip the nail like so: http://imgur.com/WuDISV4
Somtimes you just know it's gonna fly off so aim at the trash can, or put your hand near a plastic bag to catch it.
For toenails, it helps if you have a tiled bathroom floor. Then you can cut them before you clean the bathroom.

OK! Short lesson time :D First thing to know is that the cuticle isn't what you think it is! Read this blog entry :)
Ok, now that you know what cuticles actually are, first step is to moisturize those mofos! Even if you just rub in lotion when you put lotion on your hands, they NEED moisture. Preferably use a cuticle balm or oil, and don't forget to apply it to your nails as well!

Next, you wanna remove your cuticles, put on a cuticle remover and push them with a cuticle stick and you can wipe them off with a tissue. This is important because polish doesn't stick to the cuticle. Also, though you aren't supposed to trim the eponychium, I still do because honestly, mine are completely unruly. If you trim them do as little as possible.

u/spockrocker522 · 1 pointr/calmhands

I agree with other people saying that you need to keep a pair of nail clippers with you at all times. Running my fingers along my cuticle, if I feel any rough or sharp pieces sticking up, I will just clip it off, and there is not even anything left to bite and rip up! I started doing that when I started my nursing career, because open wounds on your fingers are very dangerous if you're around nasty germs all day. This nail clipper has truly saved my fingers. I highly encourage you hop on amazon right now and buy 2 or 3! It folds completely flat and also has a spot where it can be attached to a keyring. Also, stimulants can exacerbate any anxiety you may have. That means that drinking coffee or any other sources of caffeine can make your cuticle biting worse, so be cognizant of what makes you bite and try to reduce it. If necessary, see a psychiatrist and try to control any anxiety you may have. This was also part of what helped me stop! My cuticles look great, but just a year ago they looked just like yours! Good luck and I know you can do it!

They're for feet really but still great on hands. Don't shave your callouses off completely, just soften them up so they're not causing you problems daily. That way you're still good to go in the gym but don't have problems at work.

u/rdavis4559 · 2 pointsr/powerlifting

I spent a couple of years trying to figure out how best to go about it. I've seen and tried many different methods including emery boards, pumice stones, soaking hands and either filing down or using a cuticle trimmer to cut calluses off, picking off calluses with your fingernails, and on and on.

What I found worked very well for me is using Callus Eliminator gel.
http://www.amazon.com/ProLinc-Callus-Eliminator-4-oz/dp/B000PT1R9E

  • Rub it on your hands, wait 3-5 minutes, then file your calluses down with a pumice stone.

  • If you don't want to wait for the gel, take two cups of hot water and add another half cup of apple cider vinegar and an 1/8 to a 1/4 cup of hand soap, mix this all together and soak each hand for 3-5 minutes then get to filing.

  • I prefer this pumice stone: http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Pumice-Pumi-Bar-Purple/dp/B0002KU6GG

What I found works even better and much, much quicker is to use an electric nail buffer post-shower (negating the need to soak your hands first). Any electric nail file will work. You can either use the coarse carbide tips or the sandpaper tips (the latter are my preference).
What I use looks similar to this: https://www.nailsuperstore.com/assets/items/large/medicool-pro-power-portable-electric-nail-filing-machine.jpg

The electric nail file works so much more quickly than any sort of manual filing with a pumice stone or any other coarse object.

If you have really thick nails this can be helpful, but I think a better bit of advice is to spend a few bucks on some really good clippers like the ones made by Seki Edge. Just a quick suggestion. I don't know if you're male or female, but if you keep clear nail polish on your nails, that might help deter you as it tastes god awful. I had a friend who stopped biting her nails by constantly keeping polish on them because she absolutely hated the taste. Also, keeping a pair of nail clippers and a file near you might help. I stopped biting my nails many years ago, but I still bite at the skin around them when I get nervous. I keep a pair of these on hand and will often just sit and snip away while watching tv. It really helps to snip it off because I would otherwise try to bite it off. Hope this helps!

u/OppressedCactus · 10 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

Hi nail care/nail polish spaz here. Cuticles are indeed a specialized bit of skin on your nail. It sort of makes a barrier from the end of the skin on your finger to your nail bed. Oil up your nail area a couple times a day (morning and night? or just night time if you want). You can be fancy and get a nail oil pen or be basic with some vitamin E from Wal-Mart or even olive oil. It'll soften things up. GENTLY use an orange stick to push them back once a week. I don't really recommend metal tools cuz it's easier to do damage with them, or even introduce infection :( If you have the kind of cuticles that want to climb way up your nails, you can get stuff to dissolve the crust.

Be gentle and never ever cut your cuticles unless you have a hangnail snagging on things. Did I mention be gentle? I've seen so many grown out manicures where you can see the technician got too vigorous. I did it to myself once even, and the part I jacked up is still growing out 8 months later. You can see the travelling dent in the center of my thumb here

What I described up there is what I do to keep things nice because I abuse my cuticles with acetone pretty regularly for the love of polish!

I have tourette's syndrome and that means I have actual physical and verbal tics. One of my compulsive tics was nailbiting. However, I found a surprisingly simple and effective way to completely quit.

It's yours for just 3 easy payments of $19.99.

Kidding. Here is how.

You know how when your nails get too short, you stop biting that nail and you kind of hope there is another one to bite next? Then you're a little frustrated if they are all too short to bite?

So here is the solution. As soon as you notice your nails are long enough to bite, clip them with nail clippers and file the rough edge. Keep a couple sets of nail clippers at your desk at home, at work, in the car and on your keychain.

These are the best nail clippers I have ever owned and they can go on your keychain:

Now, whenever you would normally bite your nails, none of them are long enough to bite.

u/blinnlambert · 2 pointsr/polymerclay

My new favorite (extremely cheap!) tool is to use cuticle sticks. They work perfectly for smoothing small details and they feel natural to handle.

I also recently purchased some rubber tip clay tools that have really helped when smoothing/defining details. My only issue is that they are long-handled tools so I can't always reach the areas I need for refining.

My feet have nasty calluses. They're from my chacos so they're on the sides of my feet right under Talus bone at the like edge of my foot. Anyways, I was wondering if there is a good way to get rid of these and make my feet all smooth and soft! I've been using a foot file probably once a week for a month, but it's still there! I know nothing about skincare, so I'm in the dark on this one. Any help appreciated!

You may want to find a nicer one that comes with a little case maybe. Something like this http://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Glass-Inches-Carrying-Sassella/dp/B00283O7LK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394848897&sr=8-2&keywords=glass+nail+file+with+case

Rather than filing the surface you might try buffing it. Here is what most buffing blocks look like, you can usually find them in any drugstore for $2 or less. They are even numbered with the order to use each side, and you don't have to use them all. When I buff my nails I only use the coarsest side (Side 1). The only issue with these are that they are kind of large and it is sometimes hard to get a good buff on small nails like toe nails. Usually filing the surface of a nail is a no no, because if you file to deeply you can get down to the nail bed, which can cause infection (especially bad if you already suspect a possible fungus).

I apologize that I don't know any anti-fungals, the only knowledge I have of that is when my room mate had a toe fungus from a salon and had to use a prescription treatment. It worked, I think she had to use it for 30 days straight. Good luck, I hope there's something easier than that available to you!

u/LaserDinosaur · 5 pointsr/bouldering

I recommend climbing more statically (not slower! less jumpy). Using a strong balm overnight (working hands is good and cheap) is helpful if the damage is unavoidable. New climbing holds or climbing on granite is generally a skin killer.

I have a pumice stone in the shower as well, pretty useful to shear off loose skin. I have this thing: http://www.amazon.com/Cuccio-Earth-Lava-Pumice-Stone/dp/B0018MQHO2

You're welcome! I was the same way-I used to buy those drug store ones and wondered why glass files were supposedly amazing if they wore out so quickly.

It's slightly pricey (6.49) but comes with a carrying case (silly but surprisingly useful).

u/twistandpoke · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

Girl!!! I got you! So I used to date a guy with a foot fetish. It's a long story.

But what came out of that relationship, other than emotional trauma, was baby smooth feet!!

First, here are my two holy grail products.

Skin Cheese Grater

  • Okay it's not actually a cheese grater, but it sure as hell looks like one. To use, have a nice hot bath. Let your feet soak in the water, maybe add an essential oil of your choice or some epsom salts. Treat yo' self. Then take that bad boy and get all the hard callouses off of your feet. Note, don't use it on any other part of your body. I did. Lots of blood. Not fun.

    Cream of the God's Toesies

  • After you've used the cheese grater, dry off your feet and get snuggly into bed with your saran wrap and this miracle cream. Slather your feet in it! Lots and lots! Then cover your feet with saran wrap to keep the cream locked in. Slip on some cozy socks and off to bed with you.

The next morning when you wake up you should see a noticeable difference. Keep doing this and slowly cracks will go away and your feet will feel like heaven.

u/blatopilot · 1 pointr/malegrooming

Keeping them neatly clipped should go a long way to keeping them clean.

I highly recommend not buying or using junk clippers. Cheap clippers are imprecise, can bend your nail, and just not worth the hassle.

u/turtlenipples · 2 pointsr/DecidingToBeBetter

I carry this Victorinox set. They fold nice and flat, hang well on your key ring, do a great job of cutting and filing, and they last for years. I've had mine for four years this summer, and I've heard others say they've lasted for 20+.

u/AgropromResearch · 0 pointsr/WTF

Not a doctor, but it looks like your callous is getting so thick that it's flaking off like a cracked eggshell.

I had thick callous on my heel as well, didn't get like this, but it would crack sometimes. but not now, I have this:

http://www.amazon.com/Microplane-Brown-Colossal-Pedicure-Foot/dp/B00756HQNQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372386475&sr=8-1&keywords=foot+rasp

keeps the callous from getting to thick and subsequently dry.

u/rockguitardude · 1 pointr/lifehacks

You can get them from many shops where you would buy nail care products (I don't really know american stores but I think you have Boots & Sallys?) or Amazon.

They can be re-sharpened by dipping in boiling water, and cleaned/disinfected too so they're more hygenic and they are gentler on the nail. They will also get the edge feeling smoother.

Vitamin E oil, they sell it at Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, and Dollar General. Rib a little on your cuticles before bed each night.

Do you still have a base and a top coat? They're both really important to reduce staining and chipping, and to increase longevity of your manicure.

What's your budget like? Base your purchases off of how much you're willing to spend, and how big you want to go. I'm a college student, but I have no real bills and nails are my only money-consuming hobby, so I get mid to high tier polish.

Dotting tools, a cuticle pusher, and a buffing block are my top three supplies, aside from acetone, cotton balls and polish.

Two suggestions:

  1. Get a manicure. Doesn't matter what sex you are. You can get a basic one for $10, and just tell them you don't want any polish. The fact that you spent money on it will help deter you from messing it up.
  2. Buy some cuticle clippers. This is what they use at the salon to trim those little pieces of skin. I used to use nail clippers, but they're not designed for skin, and often take off more skin than you intended and feeds the cycle. (I've used exacto blades too, but they also led to me destroying my fingers even more) I've been using cuticle clippers for years and they're perfection. I'll start picking and tear my skin, but once I use the cuticle slippers to trim it off, I having nothing left to pick at. And it's a clean cut, unlike exacto blades or clippers.
u/BAXterBEDford · 2 pointsr/shrooms

The Ped Egg, the Pedi Perfect, and the like are way too expensive. I use a Stanley Surform Pocket Plane instead. If you want something that scrapes lighter, a 6 pound bag of Char-Broil Lava Rock is much cheaper than a single Aisilk Earth Lava Pumice Stone.

u/stoned_geologist · 4 pointsr/Ultralight

I picked up this which I really like. I tried the scissors and found the extra weight to be worth it. It folds up flat and fits in my ditty bag nicely.

u/I_Like_a_Clean_Bowl · 3 pointsr/Wetshaving

After a mild brushing of the head with Dawn or similar dishwashing liquid and a soft toothbrush I use a wooden cuticle pusher to remove any remaining scum hardened onto the head.

I tend to use a blade for 20-25 shaves and clean at least once or twice before actually changing the blade.

u/peanutmonkey · 2 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

<3 the nails! And cuticle care is my obsession! Check out this video on cuticle removal. I am firmly in the "no trim" camp, so I just push mine back regularly. I use some Sally Hansen cuticle removing gel and a pusher like that to remove the excess about once every couple of weeks. And while in the shower, I generally push them back with my nail about once a week. For moisture I use coconut oil right after manicures and this lotion for everyday.

u/Euclidean_Beverage · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

Well 3x a week a do a 'soak and scrub', on my off days.
Steps I take:

  • Soak my feet in water mixed with coconut oil and epsom salt for about 15 minutes.

  • Dry them and then rub foot balm deeply on base and all around. Specifically this one though there are plenty others. I just happened to receive this as a gift once and really liked it.

  • Then I scrub with a pumice. Again this is a personal preference but I have used both This and This one without any issues.

  • If they are feeling real bad I apply neosporin and bandage lightly after a 5 min ice bath.

And then everyday I lotion them in the morning and at night before bed. I think keeping them moisturized helps a ton.

As someone with the same kind of feet - I feel ya.

Baby Foot, that people have recommended works great (aside from shedding skin like a mofo for a week), but for me - it's very temporary. For a week, half a week, after which, my callouses come back. But, and i stress this - make sure to soak your feet beforehand. The results are fairly nonexistant without the pre-soak.

I have found an easier way, which worked for me. Using my "cheese grater" - this thing every couple of days in the shower (I've never had issues of it scratching or hurting me, just times when there's no skin coming off) and this lotion (I put it on whenever i wear socks, or every couple of days).

That seems to help a lot.

Here is an alternative that I use: small soft wood sticks, usually used for cleaning under/around nails: https://www.amazon.com/DMtse-Cuticle-Remover-Manicure-Pedicure/dp/B009WLX83Y

The wood sticks don't have the most sturdy tip, but that's why you can get lots of them. I wouldn't use bare metal tools, they'd be too harsh.

Monthly I use a pumice stone like this. to remove the dead skin. Do all the scrubbing at the end of the shower so your feet have had the chance to soak and soften.

You need to keep your hands in check. When I was doing kettlebells with the dudes I'd have them go over to walgreens and get a pedegg to run lightly across their calluses, and they could use the pumice attachment too. Some people just pumice in the shower.

I personally use a microplane, but that can be scary at first. It's not though, don't think of it as a grater.

I use them dry, then remember to keep moisturizing your hands and stuff, but you want to build up some hardness, just no snags that can rip!

Probably my Ped Egg and my Burt's Bees Coconut Foot Cream, but I don't think taking care of your skin is terribly unmanly.
