I'm not really a bag/purse person. It's a utilitarian thing for me, so I want it to be good quality but I'm also really picky about how it looks. Right now, I use a small cross-body bag - it's the Marc Jacobs Natasha Mini I've had it for about 1.5 years and it still looks new. I use it every day and don't really change it out, ever. I wanted the MJ one for so long and finally bought it nearly new on eBay for about 2/3 the retail price. It was a great investment, IMO. I love it and plan to continue using it for a looooong time. It's the perfect size, because I don't really carry much in my purse, and the crossbody style keeps it out of the way. I love the gray color and the gold hardware.

It's pretty casual, though, so occasionally if I'm going to a fancy dinner/event, I'll switch it out for this Kate Spade Crossbody.

Before the Natasha, I had this one from Opelle Creative on Etsy. I got it for Christmas in 2011, and used it every day until I got the MJ. It still looks brand new, and has held up beautifully. As a side note, I'd definitely recommend this seller as their quality is awesome and I love the unique design of this bag. Their current version is slightly different, I think, but still super cute. I still love this purse, but it doesn't work super well as a cross body and is a bit larger than what I currently prefer.

Edit: I wanted to add that currently my style is kinda minimal/boho/edgy and I think the MJ Natasha works really well with this.

This is so exciting I've been browsing bags left and right hehe I could keep going but I already had to make a decision on which ones made the cut and it wasn't easy, hope you don't mind I put more than one option. Seeing as it is your first purse you have to take into consideration what size fits your needs better and the design has to be somewhat easy to dress up or down so you don't have to move things around.
Anne Klein makes pretty good purses, I've owned a few and they are simple in design, stylish and good sized. This is one model I've owned and it takes me a bit to fill it all up, mind you whatever the size of the bag you'll always manage to get it pretty full, which can be bad for the shoulders... nevertheless space is always welcome.

Here's another Anne Klein with a beautiful design, I feel it's a bit more modern, this one has a zipper which I recommend if you're a bit clumsy like me, it's always a relief when you drop your bag or go to a crowded not so secure place, make the thiefs work harder for your goodies. I got the medium size. Tbh I’m not in loooovvveee. But it’s partly because I’ve gotten so spoiled with only carrying designer bags lol. I’m highly likely to keep it because I don’t have any bags that could be “trashed”. So this would be good to keep in the closet for a time that may arise when I’d like to bring along a bag that isn’t something I care about, as it’s super cheap too. 💁🏻‍♀️that and it is pretty unique. Yes to Fossil. I've had one of their laptop-sized bags in heavy daily use for 5 years, and it's just finally getting tattered. It still gets tons of compliments though. I have a thrifted small crossbody that has been in use for >10 years as well. I feel like a lot of Fossil bags work well for the Indiana Jones aesthetic, like this, this, or this. The quality isn't "keep it as your only bag for the rest of your life," but it's solid. One zipper lost it's pull on my big bag, and one seam popped on my small bag, but in each case it was after heavy use and they were easy fixes that aren't noticeable, which is good enough for me :)

Never keep it in your back pocket (that goes for your wallet as well). I typically keep everything in a cross-body day bag with a zipper, and in crowded areas like markets, public transit, shows, etc. I make sure to swing it around the front of my body so no one can easily open it from the back and reach in. This is the bag I've used on my last few trips and it has some nice safety features, though I don't think they're really necessary in most parts of the world.

If I'm taking a lot of photos in such an area I will often just hold on to my phone, or keep it in my front pants pocket with my hand hooked in there as well. But be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut -- if it's a really sketchy area maybe just don't take your phone out. You don't always need a photo of everything.

Also, I try to back up my photos as often a possible when traveling, just in case I do lose my phone somewhere.

I don't know if it's your style but I get a lot of compliments on this bag. It's pretty functional and has a lot of space, it also looks like it does in the pictures.

I have never been able to find a camera bag that I liked. All the ones I have seen are way too bulky and heavy for me and assume that you are carrying tons of equipment. They also seem to be made for someone tall while I am only 5'1" and petite. I do not want to walk around with a giant bag that screams that I am carrying expensive camera equipment.

Instead I use a lightweight small canvas crossbody bag like one of these by baggallini (found on sale at TJ max in various sizes). It's just fabric so I can put it in any purse or backpack that I own and use inserts/lens pouches for the actual lenses and camera. Other additional equipment or lenses that don't fit in it go in my purse or backpack directly.
It's super light, comfortable and very discrete. I can take it out of my backpack and use it as a crossbody bag with just my camera for easy reach and light protection.

I love purses but I also hate them... I'm pretty picky myself.

This one is I think half as much as the other one but I’m pretty sure it’s from China so i don’t know how good or bad it will be.i don’t know where the other one is from it was just advertised to me on Instagram and other social media.

That's what I use, and I couldn't beat it for $15 and free shipping (with amazon prime - I love the student life). It's the most basic duffel, but it works and it doesn't look bad.

I've been using this Fossil Backpack recently. It fits a book, wallet and an insulated 16oz cup in the main pocket and various cards, lipsticks, etc in the front pocket.

I can't find the exact Fossil crossbody I have but it's very similar to this one . I used to wear lots in the summer.

this Jansport Laptop sleeve is also a lifesaver on days I need my laptop. Not necessarily cute, but lightweight and slim. Comes in a bunch of different colors.

This Fossil purse from Amazon in black. I've had it for about a year, and it does fit most of my essentials (non work/school). But I am getting a little bored with it haha.

A few years ago I got a Pacsafe Citysafe CS100 purse and it is has a simple design. It's good quality - the color has never faded and the interior has held together without any frayed thread. It's also very durable because it was designed as an anti-theft bag - you cannot easily cut through the material and the zippers are designed with extra security in mind. It's usually in the $80 range, though Pacsafe has a variety of other bags with the same durability and simple style.

I've bought those guitar style purse straps. I put on on my knockoff Cult Gaia bag so I can hang it off a shoulder when I need both hands free. Compliments on both every. single. time. I've worn them.

Look for a sling bag. The kind that have only one strap.

Most sling bags tend to come in athletic styles, which I think looks best. You can also find some military/tacticool ones and some canvas/leather/vintage ones, but they often look a little silly, like a kid-sized version of a normal backpack.

I use this as a cheap, small, low-profile camera bag. It's just barely wide enough for my DSLR. Easily handles a book, water bottle, etc.

Also, they hang off your back instead of your side. So you don't have that messenger bag problem where you keep bumping into stuff.

The Ronin bag is a 15 dollar Rothco bag with printing on it. That being said, I use it as a gym bag and the quality is good for the price. Take that as you will.

I'm a guy and have terrible fashion advice, but if I were to get a purse, I would get something like this Purse. It's black, it can be held by your hand, can go over one shoulder, it worn like a book bag and strapped over both shoulders. Not super fancy and won't stick out. But when I carry my wife's purse for her, I hate it going across my body or just over one shoulder bc then it falls off, so this gives you the power of all 3.

If she's not into a back pack style bag, I would recommend this Purse. It's made out of a canvas material so it's not going to feel as stiff as a leather purse may feel, it also has a shoulder strap that can go Cross body if wanted. It's also big enough to hold a magazine with out having to fold it in half.

I would recommend this one. Cheap, durable, and big enough for that and then some. I use it as my gym bag & for weekend trips. You might want to get a little dopp kit because there isn't an inner pocket.

Not sure what size or color you're looking for but canvas duffles shouldn't be too hard to find for a decent price.

I flew to New York last winter and couchsurfed for six days with this bag in black. It fits more than you would imagine (x7 long-sleeve shirts, x7 underwear & socks, change of pants, 2 pb books) and it was great to have only one nondescript canvas bag to worry about. I did very nearly forget it on a bus which would have been a mess.

I also carry a Rothco messenger bag (4+ years now) and it's never let me down (has developed some holes over time)
