I'm not sure how much advice you need, so I'll give you a round-up since it sounds like you aren't too familiar with your redfoot yet - forgive me if I'm overstepping here. (Number one question, are you sure it's a redfoot?)

Depending on just how big yours is, it wouldn't be the worst idea to stick with the kiddie pool indoors - but if it were me, depending on her size, I would try to get a second pool, cut some of the walls out, and try to make one big/long pool. If she's as big as I envision, the ideal situation would be that she gets at least half of a small bedroom. ;)

She'll need some flooring/substrate in there, and you'll want to have some UV lamps and a heat lamp suspended above his home (there is some good advice about these three elements on this page: http://tortoiseyard.com/creating_a_home_for_your_redfoot_tortoise.htm). You might need to construct something out of wood or metal to hang these lights from. If there's a reptile store anywhere near you you might give them a call or visit to see if they have any suggestions, too.

She's also going to need a soaking/drinking dish. She should be able to climb in and out of the dish pretty easily, and it should be deep enough to soak in without having to submerge her face or strain her neck. Keep the water pretty clean cause she'll drink out of it too (ours likes to poop in the water so keep an eye out for that). Soaking is very important!

They also really like moderately high humidity (being a tropical/subtropical tortoise), so I have a reptile fogger (a glorified humidifier) that pipes in steam to the tank. Too much or too little is problematic, but if the air in your home is dry this is definitely a must-have, and you can figure out what's best as you go.

Do you have feeding under control? Stay away from pellet food unless you're really desperate and go for diet as described here (http://redfoottortoise.com/redfoot_tortoise_diet.htm) and here (http://tortoiseyard.com/diet.htm). Try to keep uneaten food out of the cage lest you attract bugs. Get him some cuttlebones (just search it on Amazon) and leave it in his cage - replace it when you see it has been eaten!

Depending on how deep that well is it might be free from contamination. But what about the sump pump? Usually there is something electrical that is pumping that water up.

Also can you access the pump (to fix if something happens to it, whether from EMP or simple malfunction) from your home or a bunker? Is it hand pumped? Is it the old fashioned bucket on a rope? Do you still have to treat it (the reservoir) every few years?


Essentially water never really “goes bad” but over time even plastic from water bottles can leech into it, same with radiation. Though if pipes run up to the surface the water In Those pipes can be irradiated, and then spread down. I highly encourage you to look into gamma radiation detectors, they can be pricey ($500-$?????)

but they can literally save your life. Also look into potassium Iodide, it’s a gamma blocker though for it to be effective you must take it and allow some time for it to get into your system before you absorb a decent amount of gamma.

It is a good idea in general to open things up and clean them if you spill stuff into them. However, I would look up some youtube videos of people working on your particular model. I haven't opened a MacBook in years, but some laptops can be a real pain. You'll want to make sure you have the right tools and a backup computer in case things go south and you have to take it in somewhere. Definitely back up your data if you can.

Plug the mat into the third prong of a grounded outlet. Then set the laptop on the mat and put on the wrist strap. After you open the laptop, be sure to touch an exposed metal screw in there or the metal case before starting work. This will ensure the laptop is at ground potential. When you pull the motherboard or any components from the laptop, set them on the mat.

You can clean the laptop with isopropyl alcohol and or distilled water. Alcohol is nice because it dries fast. Just get in there with some q-tips and start scrubbing. Of course, not too hard. The tiny surface mount components can come off if you press too hard or if they're corroded. Just make sure that if something does break loose, you know exactly where it came from. One good trick for gently cleaning big messes is to dump a good bit of alcohol on the board, then spray it off with a can of air. Just be careful to keep from getting any microphones or speakers wet. It's also not good to leave a board wet for too long. They can warp.

I'm a little hesitant to make full on recommendations but it's possible that these measurements have already been done. Generally, x-ray devices are registered with the State. Depending on where you are it's possible there's already a report on file.

In any case, dental x-rays, even panos, are pretty low power/low dose. And a GM isn't the best device to measure exposure due to the low energies and short duration of beam engagement.

That device says it does integrated dose rate measurements but I would caution that what it will very likely be reading is going to be natural background radiation. If you really wanted to do some long term monitoring you may want to look at film badges, and have one at a work station and one in a control area away from sources.

You could also just see if the GM responds while the beam is engaged I suppose, but dose rates from dental x-rays to the patient are on the order of 0.005 mSv. The dose to someone a few meters away will be very close to 0.

Not trying to talk you out of it, just don't know that a low cost GM is going to give you great info on x-ray doses.

I don't post here myself, but having some background in this field i'd recommend you take this over to /r/NuclearPower. This seems a little out of scope. Hazmat and nuclear protection are generally different fields, sometimes they overlap however.

I'm more concerned as to why you're receiving motors that are possibly full of activated material yet you're asking strangers on the internet how to handle this stuff. If you're not considered a Nuclear Energy Worker (in Canada they call it this) you might actually not allowed to handle this stuff from a regulatory perspective depending on where you work/live. Now that looks like it's mostly copper and aluminium, so activation is less of a concern, but any part with steel in it could be a concern. It all depends on the amount of neutrons these things have seen.

Not knowing what they were used for I can't really give you any reasonable starting point. Maybe they just actuated water flow through a pipe in a reasonably safe area - maybe they were on a robot exploring a Fukushima Daiichi reactor core. The two are incredibly massive differences.

Assuming you'll be handling these quite a bit, generally a starting point are placing film badge dosimeters outside the hot cell in an area that is considered 'not exposed', you don't want them outside though either as you get exposed to radiation from the environment as well. This is your control dosimeter. Depending how activated the materials in this motor are you might need a giant pile of lead bricks around it or just a thick concrete wall or both. Inside the hot cell, pick a specific spot that you place another film badge dosimeter at which is always a certain distance from where you store these things. The idea being is that radiation dose falls with distance, so to get consistent measurement keep the dosimeter a set distance away. You'll have to send those film badges away for analysis on a cycle set by your local regulatory agencies.

The facility I worked at which wasn't a nuclear power plant, for the office staff, if your annual dose was >2mSv/year compared to the control dosimeter then the technical staff were doing something wrong shielding wise. In Canada the effective dose limits for a nuclear energy worker is 50 mSv in any one year and 100 mSv in five consecutive years. The dose limit for pregnant workers is 4 mSv from the time the pregnancy is declared to the end of the term.

I'm not any sort of expert on personal dosimeters, any recommendation I'd make would be based on the same googling you'd be doing. Honestly at that price point if you were otherwise happy with it I'd just buy another one. Only problem I see with it is a pretty low gamma energy detection range that tops out at 1.25MeV, but if you're just interested in knowing when you've entered a general increase in background it's fine.

The X-Ray sheets online are black and clear - and the plastic sheet they're on is tinted blue because back then they thought the blue increased contrast to the eye - it doesn't.

If you turn the image black and white, fiddle with the contrast, and then colorise the image to Cyan..... you'll get the same X-Ray result!

The sheets from X-Ray cassettes are AWESOME. Plastic phosphor layer, and a BLACK back layer - the light you see isn't leaking from the blue light of the tube, it's only from the phosphor lighting from X-Rays.

You could spend $25 on a trash can and maybe $5-10 on stuff trying to get it to seal.

Or you could spend $55 on an HDPE drum with the seal built in.

I'd look up what your can is made out of, reference this to see if it is safe. Also what temps it can hold. I like HDPE because I can dump hot liquid in it without worry.

But really, sealing isn't that necessary. Keep bugs out, but that's really it. No oxidation concerns. More on infections later.

As far as heat, I wouldn't worry. Many of the esters and phenols created from hot fermentation will be cut out with your early heads. It's really not a big issue. But 70-80f would be great for whiskey, and and I wouldn't expect it to get any higher even with the thermal mass of 20-25 gallons.

And sanitation... Well. I don't really worry too much. I spray my fermenter down with water and store it open, upside down. No sanitizer, not really necessary. But if you really want, spraying starsan should be fine. Mild infections are good for complexity though, so a lot of people skip it.

I did recently get a bit of mold when I stored it incorrectly and had some liquid... Whoops. Luckily HDPE can be bleached.

I'm not a targeted individual, and frankly I don't think you are either, but I'll proceed in giving you the benefit of the doubt anyway.

First, you need undeniable physical evidence. Get a Geiger counter (you can find a relatively cheap and well-reviewed one on Amazon here) and read up on the measurements that a Geiger counter will give you with this chart. If the radiation is causing you significant physical harm like you've described then it is likely ionizing radiation, which a Geiger counter can accurately measure.

Your references towards being affected by electrical appliances sound more like elecromagnetic radiation though, which is quite different from ionizing radiation. A device like this can be used to measure ambient EMF radiation. Again, make video documentation to prove that you're being exposed to extremely high levels of it.

If you're concerned about the possibility of your video evidence being tampered with, as many TIs seem to be, you can upload that video evidence to a storage medium such as FreeNet (/r/freenet), which will split the video file into many, many pieces and distribute them to thousands of volunteers worldwide so that the original file can be retrieved later. The data in the pieces that are distributed to the volunteers is encrypted so they won't know what they're holding on to for you, so even if they were complicit in the alleged gang stalking they wouldn't know that you (as the uploader) were someone they needed to fuck with. (This is, of course, a very brief explanation of the inner workings of FreeNet which leaves a lot out, but you get the gist of it.)

Now for the suggestion you're not going to like. See a mental health specialist. If you're correct, and you have the evidence to back it up, you can get yourself a clean bill of mental health that you can present at future court proceedings to help validate the fact that there is a grand conspiracy against you. And if you're not correct, and you are mentally ill, you can get help.

You should travel a considerable distance from where you live to contact the mental health professional, because the conspiracy against you is certainly localized to some degree. However unlikely, it is possible to buy out local mental health professionals, but it is simply not feasible to buy out every mental health professional in the entire country on the off chance that they might have one particular person come in that they need to conspire against. You aren't a rambling nut job, so I am confident that you will agree that it's astronomically unlikely that a conspiracy against you would span more than a small network of a few towns. With this in mind, seeing a somewhat distant mental health professional seems like a logical option in a plan to fight this attack on you.

Meet in a "Publicly accessible private place".

An example would be to book a hotel room in a hotel with at least 4 floors and more than 50+ rooms. Check into the room as normal and tell the other party, preferably in a secure manor like an encrypted e-mail, the room number. That other party can go directly to your room and meet you there. I do know some old ones, some standard issue ones, and some advanced ones.

The tags used for pets are around the size of a grain of rice. Doubt you have one of those.
Check your jacket and try to make your room use less consistent.

Audio bugs could be used on your phone by taking control of your microphone. Yes, hidden services could use your location, they track the 'cells' your phone connects to every time you change areas or use it. A competent, well-equipped group could track your phone if it was off or in airplane mode. Take the battery out, or remove the GPS temporarily. Some people go as far as to disconnect their cameras and microphones when not using.

I had to do a double take to check that I didn't post this last night without remembering.

I am going through this same process with the 10x14 attic space above our bedroom. I started off with Plan B and tried a few different methods. Filter bags filled up much too quickly and would have been expensive but they did a great job of containing the mess. I have a Dust Deputy attached to my vacuum which helped, but inevitably, the shopvac would get clogged with insulation that made it out of the vortex. My most recent adaptation was to attach the dust deputy to the top of a 40 gallon airtight drum I bought from amazon and then use some old pantyhose around the shopvac filter. This greatly extends my times between either emptying the shopvac or emptying the 40 gallon barrel. Inevitably the shopvac gets filled first but the pantyhose does a great job of keeping the filter in usable shape.

I did buy a Toro leaf blower/vacuum and it worked well but I didn't have an airtight container at the time so the fine insulation would just blow out from under the lid of the trash can I was using. If you have ANY holes in the tubing, you will have a dusty mess on your hands. I plan on retrying this method on the remainder of my attic in the next couple of weeks. If/when it doesn't work adequately, I will buy some insulation bags from Amazon and that should finish the job for me.

I'm not going to try this(or I might) but I think if you daisy chained two dust deputies and two drums, you would be absolutely fine with a shopvac.

I also made the mistake of failing to consider the difficult in mixing the Green Fiber cellulose bales without their machine once I had removed the old insulation. I only needed 7 bags for above our bedroom but man was that a PITA. I used a concrete mixer attached to my battery powered drill and managed to get in a great rhythm but having the machine would have been a million times easier.

I've got a couple of these and like them. They are above your price range, but were the lowest cost ones I felt comfortable purchasing. I've owned mine for nearly 2 years and haven't had a problem with them. I've even tested them extensively shooting them with dental x-ray systems to ensure they were accurately reporting.

That’s not the only brand. Just check for “emesis bag.” You tie up the top by putting the top of the bag into one of the ring slashes. These can be folded into a small frisbee shape. One can fit in must purses. Carrying one around might help you feel more comfortable in general when going out because you have what you need if you get nauseous (like in a store or something).

Yes, it is a real risk! But prevention is easy, just keep touching the case or any other metallic object every few minutes (with very high-end components I get OCD and do it every 2-3 mins).

Hmm, quite the predicament. Here is a solution that might work for you (this is for the goldfish)- go to a local hardware store or tractor supply or landscape store and try to find an all purpose tub, storage tote, or practically any large container, somewhere around 30-50 gallons. Most of these tubs are fish safe, and are very cheap. For filtration use a large sponge filter and pump which are a very cheap and a effective alternative to normal filters. I wouldn’t worry about heat at the moment as this is meant to be temporary, and goldfish can handle it briefly. I wouldn’t but any decorations or substrate in the tub, just leave it bare. This setup is actually widely used in the goldfish hobby, so it’s a great choice.

But i build PC's all the time and I have never used a grounding strap. Whats more important is to make sure you don't produce statics. Don't wear socks and run over carpet for example. You can always ground yourself by touching, for example, a heat radiator or the grounding part in an electrical outled.

So what I would do is get a piece of magnetic imaging film [1] and survey the desk area for fields. Besides that I would introduce an insulator, for any development board I work on, I have used those green craft boards [2] which are seem to be great insulators. You might also try using a wrist connected grounding strap [3]. If there are any electrical posts built into the table, unplug them, and inspect the insulators and neutral & ground runs.

The blumats have a 30gal resevoir with a pH controller. This has basically cut my weekly work in half. I just top off the res every couple weeks.

That's a 3x3 tray, so that leaves 6 inches on all sides for some pavers to hold up those shelves. I use a transfer pump and wand to feed from 5gal buckets and then pump the runoff out of the tray back into a bucket for reuse outside for my strawberries.

Yes. There are devices made specifically for this used in electronics manufacturing all the time. Generally it'll be a wrist strap (or foot strap) that is conductive and plugs into a ground to discharge static continuously, but if you just want to avoid getting shocked you simply need to move the point of discharge away from your body. Holding onto a conductive (non-grounded) object like a steel rod and touching that rod to a conductive, grounded surface will discharge the static but you shouldn't feel anything since the discharge is between the two conductive surfaces and not your skin and something else.

I got sick of those, since all the ones I could find for sale were like that. Ended up getting a proper metal can, and don't have any problems now. Put spout into thing, squeeze handle, get gas into thing.

OK, this probably won't be the most well reviewed response, but it worked for me. Just be aware you need a trailer for this.

After a few years of evap ponds, and other things, I got frustrated and just bought 2 of these. I thought would need them both, but in reality, I used maybe 1/2 of one with gray water from showers and cooking. Put some bleach in it from time to time. Dumped it at a gray water approved place after the burn. 7 people will maybe fill 1 if you aren't sloppy.

I'm in California where our two largest concerns (mine, anyway) are earthquakes and fire.

For earthquakes it's standard preparation stuff because aspects of grid can shut down for short or long periods of time. There's also the "get out of the house now!" type situation which is really just shoes and a flashlight, or just your human body. If your bag is downstairs and you're upstairs you're not going to run to a bugout bag first. It's just get out (depending on the quake, the building, etc).

I do have a bugout bag primarily for fire evacuation, which has:

• Important docs. Homeowners policy, our will, healthcare directives, passports, social security cards, etc.
  
• A printed road map of the state (thin book).
  
• A kickass little am/fm radio.
  
• A handheld 2m radio programmed with area repeaters, I have a mag antenna in my truck.
  
• Geiger counter. Way over the top for people to have but I bought one so where else would I put it.
  
• 4 way water key.
  
• Spare credit cards, some cash.
  
• Medications we need.
  
• USB chargers.
  
  I also have a google spreadsheet printed out that has the items we want to take. The evacuation orders can come at any time and you might be knee deep in some project or sick on the couch, you need to be able to mindlessly grab items that a smarter-you considered bringing. The bag is just the one that we're really screwed if we don't have. This is my list, it's taped under my desk at home.
  
  Edit: also, there's a column for different family members. My kids have stuff they're supposed to grab (a change of clothes, etc) while mine has the chainsaw and a shovel.
  
  It's possible you'll have less than 20 seconds to escape your home but chances are you'll have at least a few minutes, maybe even a few hours. Having a list of things to grab from the house thought out in advance seems reasonable to me. And some stuff that's super useful (like dumping everything from the medicine cabinet into a bag) is more of an instruction than an item, per say.

ESD wrist straps are usually something like a megohm to ground so that there is enough of the path to discharge any static buildup, but not enough current to kill you should something go wrong. If you work on live equipment and have a short to ground on one arm and touch something with the other, the current path goes straight across your chest. Here, $1.73 for a strap If you want to make one you need 1 megohm resistor to put between your body and the ground.
