I have some recommendations and suggestions. I know there's a lot of info, but you should know this if you want to get more value for your money. I ran out of space before I could cover everything, so just ask me if you have questions.

Headphones

The first thing you should determine is whether you need sound isolation or not.

• Open-back: the earcups have perforations/openings that allow sound to freely pass through. The benefits to this is generally a larger soundstage and better imaging. This can also help if your ears tend to sweat.
  
  
• Closed-back: the earcups have solid shells that isolate sound from passing through to various extent.
  
   
  
  Next, you should figure out which sound signature you prefer.
  
  
• Balanced/flat/neutral: doesn't over- or under-emphasize the bass or treble.
  
• Warm: emphasizes the bass.
  
• Dark: recesses the treble. A headphone can be warm and dark.
  
• Bright: emphasizes the treble.
  
• U-shape: emphasizes the bass and treble a little.
  
• V-shape: emphasizes the bass and treble more than U-shaped.
  
• Mid-forward: the mids are louder than the bass and treble. The mids may be emphasized or the bass and treble may be recessed.
  
  Sub-bass is how deep the bass goes and is where rumble comes from.
  
  Mid-bass is where impact/slam comes from.
  
  Generally, for competitive shooters, as little bass as possible is favorable because bass overpowers or overshadows footsteps and other sound cues.
  
   
  
  Lastly, you should know what sound characteristics constitute positional audio and pertain to immersion.
  
  
• Soundstage: is produced by the headphone, not the game. It's perceived space and environment of sound. It's the size of the sound field around you. A small soundstage makes the environment around you sound confined or boxed in. With a large soundstage, the environment sounds much more spatial, open and natural. You can't comprehend it without experiencing it.
  
  
• Imaging: is inherent to the audio content. It's how accurately the locations of sounds/objects are reproduced.
  
  
• Separation: is how you discern individual sounds from a range of overlapping sounds. This is only important in competitive shooters.

  has emphasized sub-bass, mid-bass and treble. Has clean bass and smooth treble. The soundstage is very wide, like the others I've mentioned, but it lacks some depth. It's probably only noticeable if you play competitively or compare it side-by-side with headphones that are deeper. This affects the imaging from front to back. The imaging from left to right is excellent. Separation and clarity are excellent. Detail retrieval is great, but bass overpowers sound cues a lot.

  You can connect the headphone and mic to the PS4 by using an audio USB adapter. The one I linked has separate jacks for the headphone and mic, so in order to use it with V-MODA BoomPro, you need a Y-splitter, which is included with the mic. The other 3.5mm mics have an own cable, so there's no need for a Y-splitter.
  
  USB mics, like AT2020USB, Snowball and Yeti, connect directly to the PS4.
  
  If the cables aren't long enough, then just use an aux extension cable or a USB extension cable.
  
   
  
  The PS4 isn't capable of powering all headphones sufficiently, so you may need a sound card or a headphone amplifier and a DAC (digital-to-analog converter). A Sound card has an amp and a DAC built in and sacrifice sound quality for features. You need a DAC because USB and optical are digital signals and PS4 has no analog outputs. There's a common problem with reversed left and right channels when using USB DACs, so I'll only list DACs with optical. I'll only list USB sound cards that officially support PS4.
  
  Power isn't just impedance dependent, it's also sensitivity dependent, which many new to this hobby overlook. If a headphone has a low impedance rating and a high sensitivity rating, it will be very easy to drive. If a headphone has a high impedance rating and a high sensitivity rating, it should be easy to drive. If a headphone has a high impedance rating and a low sensitivity rating, it will be hard to drive. If a headphone has a low impedance rating and a low sensitivity rating, it will be very hard to drive.
  
  There's no consensus on where 'high' impedance starts at. I've read/heard anywhere from 50 ohms to 300 ohms. For sensitivity, there are two different measurements used for this: SPL/mW and SPL/V. 100 dB SPL/mW and 110 SPL/V are considered high.
  
  If you don't want to ever deal with this, then I recommend just getting a very powerful sound card or amp, e.g. Creative Sound BlasterX G5 or Schiit Magni 3.
  
  Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X, Philips Fidelio X2 and Sennheiser HD598 are very loud for me out of the controller or by using an audio USB adapter. The 600-ohm version of Beyerdynamic DT990 is too quiet.

Holy shit for real? I was being a dick too man, I apologize. People who've bought into gaming headsets often don't like hearing they aren't the best investment so I guess I'm prone to being salty with them.

If you want my recommendation for VR with the Vive I've been recommending the HD 558s for a number of reasons. They are really decent quality overear open headphones and the material on both the ear cups and the headband should hold on to your head well in use in VR while you're moving all around. These headphones (along with the 598s) have an amazing soundstage for gaming as well. Because they're open you're going to be able to hear the world around you, this might sound immersion breaking but I think you'll find that it's not and it's the trade off with open headphones and having a good soundstage. It also has the added benefit of being able to hear people while in VR though.

Now, coming from gaming headsets the bass might sound a bit lacking or they might not seem to pop as much but that's due to a more realistic and neutral soundstage. I am 99% sure you'll get used to it. As I mentioned about the 598s are also great and maybe even a little better but the headband is made out of a pleather material that tends to slip, so I can't recommend them for VR.

The 558s are about $100 and are easily one of the best pairs of headphone you can buy at that price point. For VR I would recommend picking up this as the included cable is very long (great for couch gaming, not for VR).

For a mic in VR I'd say just use the one in the Vive. For desktop I use either my Blue Snowball or my Blue Yeti.

i don't have a nontwist cable to test, but im pretty sure you need a nontwist cable to put into your headphones. you need to twist to shove them in all the way(if they aren't in all the way, you will only get sound out of your left ear, or quiet sound, or other stuffs). essentially no, you cannot use the headset without locking the cable into place.

i step on my cables a lot, and imo this is actually perfect. it keeps the cable in the jack perfectly. if you keep pulling on it for some months it'll seem to come loose easier, but cables are dirt cheap to replace in stead of you usually needing to get new headphones when you inevitably break your cable (went through 5+ headphones before i got my sennheisers)

i recommend grabbing one of the replacement cables sold on amazon. they hold into your pc jacks better than the cable+2.5>3.5mm adapter that it comes with in the first place. i got the 3m and it's been great (i broke my old one due to twisting it really really hard inside the jack with my chair, completely my fault. other than that it's held up great.)

i really don't understand the need to not have the twist mechanism, it's pretty beneficial. is there any reason why you'd actually need to remove it?

I'll never not recommend Sennheiser, they are amazing. Even their budget headphones are really good and sound leagues better than similarly priced headphones from "premium" companies like Skullcandy and Turtle Beach.

Comfortable, sound great, replaceable cable, and easy to clean (those ear cushions pop right off, I hand wash them with Dawn dish soap about 2-3 times a year).

The default cable with the 6.33m plug and 3.5mm adapter is a little annoying, I replaced mine with one of these and it's been great.

Hi there! I posted this late last night in yesterday’s tech help thread, but it obviously wasn’t the ideal time, so I didn’t get a reply.

I’m currently considering building a gaming PC, and I plan on getting the Massdrop x Sennheiser PC37X headset. However, I’m not sure how long down the road I’ll have my build ready, and I’d like to have the headset for console gaming in the meantime. But, one problem: the Dualshock 4 doesn’t natively support the PC37X, seeing as the headset has a dual cable form. So, I’m thinking of pulling the trigger on the headset now, as I plan on using it down the road anyway, and buying a cheap $5-$10 audio splitter to connect it to my PS4 controller. One question given that context:

Next up I'm saving for a Schiit Modi 2 and Magni 2 DAC/amp combo.

They're not detachable, but otherwise the Final Audio E3000 sound right up your alley on a budget. You could also try the BGVP DMG but buy an aftermarket mmcx mic cable if a detachable cable is a must-have. The issue with your budget is that most great headphones in the price range aren't super warm and the detachable cables don't have mics, so it would take you over budget to replace the cable. The go-tos in that range are the Ikko OH1, Etymotic ER3XR, and the vSonic GR07 Bass Edition, but all three are known to have pretty strong treble. My gut says you might really love these with something like this.

I've got the AKG K240 Mk II. They're the same thing, just different colors, an extra cable (coiled), and an extra set of earpads (velour). Definitely worth getting the regular version, especially given that they are right at your price point.
Just know that these are not "bassy" headphones. They are semi-open, which allows you to hear sounds around you, and people can hear what you're listening to. This makes them sound more natural. They have a decent soundstage, meaning you can hear what direction a sound is coming from. The effect depends on the source audio though.
The replaceable cable is a huge benefit. Running over the cable with your chair no longer means the end of your headphones (soldering those tiny wires is not easy for an amateur like me). The downside is that they only work with AKG's proprietary connector, and the cables aren't super cheap, but it's still cheaper than buying a new pair of headphones. And you can always pick up a better cable (longer, shorter, braided, whatever suits your needs).
Oh yeah, in case you were wondering, these headphones are extremely comfortable to wear. I use them for many hours every day and I never become fatigued. In comparison, my MDR-V6 would become uncomfortable to wear after a while, and the high treble on them would also start to give me a headache.
In summary, I think AKG K240 has amazing features, quality, and comfort at a great price.

I have a pair and they've got fantastic instrument separation. If you lie down in the dark and focus on the track, you can very clearly distinguish every note that every part plays (probably to the point where you'd be able to transcribe the music quite accurately). I would not quantify the bass as weak; it has punch, even if not earth-shaking.

However, they have a laid back feel - they might feel slow for someone listening to fast, dynamic, lively music. They're great for anything, but if you discriminate and need the phones to closely suit the genre, then these are probably best for classical, jazz and movies.

They're also larger than the ATH M-series phones, but are said to be more comfortable because of their lesser headband clamping force.

But with regard to what you said, though I got mine for $99, $156 is still half price, a fantastic value.

One final caveat - the HD 598 phones come with a detachable 3.5 mm-in 6.3 mm-out cable, which will not be connectible to a computer or portable music player, and you'll have to resort to the included adaptor, which may be impractical for some users. This cable would alleviate that problem ($16).

I know it's 10 ft, but you can loop the cable using velcro. Also, this cable is lighter and more flexible than the V-Moda audio cable. It feels like you're wearing headphones with no cable attached, yet they're still playing audio. =)

If you like super-light audio cables, try it. For $3.50 and free shipping, it's definitely worth a shot.

Wow, you so spot on it makes me mad... I got mine when they went on black friday sale. On February 6th I ordered this.

Last night after the foam had removed itself from my leather I had pulled out the foam, flipped the leather inside out and regluded the foam back with super glue (which by the way works wonderfully, I think they may sound better now since the glue hardened a bit, it supports the pads better against the headphone.

The headphones are great, the focus pads aren't worth $10 and Hifiman sells them for 40. The cable is worth $5 considering it broke after 3 months and they charge $120 for it.

This is true. But with closed headphones you get less sound stage and it feels more like you're wearing headphones than it feels like sounds are happening around you. Open headphones allow sounds to feel like there is some space between your ear and where the sounds is coming from. It's kind of a balancing act.

I'm going to be using my Sennheiser HD 558 for personal use. They're the most comfortable thing I put on everyday. I could probably wear them 24/7 and not notice them. They just kind of melt into your head and onto your ears... and they sounds great for the price.

I did buy a shorter cable and plan on ziptieing the Vive cables so I get a snugger fit without more cable flopping around. The cable that comes with Senn HD5XX headsets is at least 8 feet long. Great for at your desk, not great to be dragging around behind you in VR.

A couple things:

I highly recommend the HD 598s. I've used them for over a year now and I still love them like the day I got them. Everything sounds good on them and they are super comfy - you could wear them for 24 straight hours. I got this replacement cable for them and It's very high-quality and well worth the $16

All that being said, I would not really recommend using them in public. Firstly, while I love the the tan and brown look, they will look kind of goofy in public since they aren't really your "normal" headphone colors (unless, or course, you get the ones in black). Aside from aesthetics, there is not really a good storage solution (I think there's a case you can get for them, but it's really bulky), so they might get broken if you put them in your backpack and aren't careful with it. Finally, they are open-back. You will be able to hear everything around you, and everything around you will be able to hear you. If I'm without speakers and don't want to wear headphones, I'll actually just set them on the desk and turn them up a bit and they double pretty well as makeshift speakers.

Anyway, they're really best for home use (I use them for gaming, music, and everything in between).

I think a closed pair of headphones is most versatile because it can be used in more settings. I'd go with M40x with a pad change. It's a solid, affordable headphone with excellent build quality and doesn't require amplification to sound good.

Sounds awesome, comfort is amazing, and can be powered reasonably well from just the phone (I use Fiio Q1).

There are probably better options if you want just bluetooth or wired under $100, but if you want the flexibility to do either you could get:

Take a look into ZS5 reviews, you'll see the updated version of it has sharp highs and a semi-recessed bass, but the isolation from Comply's foam tips helps the bass tremendously and the waxguard takes care of the sibilance on the high end making them a lot more balanced. I don't know if I'd call it bass boosted at that point, but I listen to a lot of EDM/rock/drum & bass with my ZS6 with comply tips (which sounds very similar) and I'm not disappointed by a lack of bass at all.

That bluetooth cable is the only one I'd recommend for KZ headphones, the others are a mixed bag. I use it for the gym myself and it can hold a charge for several days while being used about an hour in the gym each day.

The cable isn't necessary, but recommended. I keep one in my gym bag for if the bluetooth battery dies (hasn't had it die yet charging it once a week... but I probably need to go to the gym more often). The stock cable is kind of sticky, doesn't keep a good fit around the ear, holds its coil shape a little annoyingly, and has a lot of sound interference anytime it bumps/scratches anything. It's usable, but it's worth it to upgrade imo.

I have the ZS6 myself (I prefer the look with the vents and wanted a green IEM) and have only tried the ZS5, so I have a lot more experience with the ZS6 but they sound very similar to me (the v2 version of the ZS5). If you have any questions let me know.

Yeah I thought the same thing until i tried it, and I was blown away by the DSS when I got it after it came out. I'm really picky about my sound and I simply couldn't do without it now. And again, I prefer the virtual over actual headsets with 5 drivers in each ear (as I have a few of those) because the sound is so much punchier in a headset with 2 larger drivers, and the spatial awareness is easily just as good.

Another solution I often use with the "cabling issue" is that I simply bought a 3.5mm TRRS cable and simply set the chat/volume mix where I like it and still just have that cable running across the floor, leaving the MixAmp tucked nicely away under the tv.

So you are correct about the cable. The headset adapter should have come with a short adapter cable (around 3 inches) that goes from 2.5mm to 3.5mm, essentially allowing you to use whatever cables you had been using to plug into your 360 controller. So if you have that adapter all you would need is a 2.5mm cable.

So the standard Turtle Beach adapter is exactly the same as the Microsoft Stereo Headset Adapter. No difference at all. The Plus included the "superhuman hearing" which essentially is a compressor and high end boost, so footsteps sound louder, but explosions and gunshots sound a little weak with it on. The EQ settings are pretty good, and I much prefer the settings (on MixAmp or Plus) solution over having a "treble" and "bass" knob, as they always seem to get turned by accident. For me, The self monitoring alone is worth it. I hate not being able to hear myself. Keep in mind the MixAmp has self monitoring as well, and I would highly recommend just sticking with a simple adapter if using that. The DSS on the other hand doesn't, so the adapter would come in handy. Either way I'd say it's definitely wroth the extra $10 bucks. Sucks that we have to spend $40 bucks on a silly adapter, but comparatively it's worth the price.

  Which Bluetooth cable do I choose? There's about 3 different ones and they are all different.

I use an audio splitter (example) to route music from my phone/laptop to both a speaker and an Arduino circuit. The code I wrote for the Arduino takes in the music, breaks up the signal into its various frequencies, and assigns a color to the dominant one. For example, I made it so that lower frequencies like bass lines appear blue and higher frequencies like vocals appear more red, and in-between ones are more purple colored. It then propagates that color down the LED strip.

I can use any color I want. I just thought this color scheme would look better for parties. And it ended up matching the overall look and feel of Simulation Theory, so I thought I'd share.

Analyzing the frequencies takes a lot of computing time, so the LEDs aren’t propagating as fast as I'd like. To fix this I'm working on a different algorithm that uses a completely different method.

I was actually looking into those 668s before I got these MP ones. They do technically have a detachable cord, but not quite like what I meant. I wanted to be able to use my mic adapter (not this exactly but it's the same thing). I appreciate the recommendation but the only reason I was asking was to see if there was anything else as good or better for as much or less.

I do agree that the MP headphones are not $20 headphones though since they practically require mods to be usable. I do consider them absolutely fantastic $40ish headphones though.

For what it's worth, I've purchased off Amazon a 6-foot male-to-female AUX cable as an extension cord for my computer headphones. But the same model I got also comes in 12 and 25-foot lengths to make it a little more accommodating. I don't know if the quality for audio deteriorates after a certain length, but it's really nice for my computer and I imagine it would help get a good sound feel while playing consoles.

Yeah! Honestly I totally agree. I bought a PS4 to play the new spiderman game and it was definitely frustrating when I started my stream to have viewers say that there was no game audio.

I just used a headphone audio/microphone splitter cable i got with my headset and plugged in directly into my external monitor speakers and it works great. Heck some monitors even have a head phone jack directly into the monitor itself so if that's an option try that.

First thing I would do is replace whatever headset / mic / headphones / speakers you use with a cable like this. Make sure it's selected as the only output device. Play a youtube video. Make sure you don't hear any noise (indicated a monitor speaker or something is active).

Then, open Windows Voice Recorder and play a test recording. Make sure the mic picks up your voice.

Now that you know both are working properly, play a youtube video and record using the voice recorder. See if you get any youtube audio in the recording.

Looking for an adapter for my 598Cs's 6.3mm cable. Looks like the cable is 2.5mm TRRS to 6.3mm. I need an adapter that converts that 6.3mm to 3.5mm. I purchased this one a few weeks ago, but it didn't work at all.

Someone suggested yesterday that I might need one that converts to TRRS, but that seems near impossible to find, and the few I can find seem sketchy and expensive (here and here). I'm at a bit of a loss so any help to find this adapter or something that works would be great. If I can't find anything here, I'm gonna go into a BestBuy or Guitar Center and ask around if they might be able to help.

EDIT: Been thinking about it more and is my issue that the cable is TRRS and therefore converting that to be just sound is impossible? Should I get a new cable like this?

I just picked up the SONY ECM-CS3 to replace my Zalman mic, and everyone says I sound much clearer now. It's also much easier to manage since the clip fits my headphone cord perfectly. Be sure to get an extension cable if you do pick this up as the cord is incredibly short.

My car does not have bluetooth audio streaming, but it does have an aux port. I play music from my Google Play Music subscription on my daily commute through my phone's headphone jack. Sometimes I want to skip a song or pause the music I'm playing. This often ends up being frustrating and dangerous.

Is there an android device that will make this easier and safer for me? Maybe an android powered music player with physical play/pause and skip buttons? Would I be better off getting a smartwatch? (If so, is there a cheap one that works well with Google Play Music?)

I've tried doing the "Ok Google, skip track" thing, but that was frustrating, too.

If anyone wants shorter cables I recommend getting these, the standard AKG cables are okay, but for some reason kept dying on me every few months.

What I love about these cables is that they're flexible and soft unlike the standard AKG ones which are pretty stiff, that and there's tension springs and they actually work unlike the cheaper mini xlr to 3.5mm cables.

So to my knowledge, there are some bad quality replacement wires with a mic for both iphone and andriod, but like i said bad quality. There is not much you can do other than buy a cable without a mic, if that is what you want. I bought this wire and it works like a charm.

Star eater is a non issue for my optics as well as my seeing. It would only occur if a star would be 1px in size and lands on a green bayer position.

I use the lacerta mgen built in exposure trigger via a snap 3.5mm to sony multiport adapter and set the camera to bulb exposure (which cuts the effective bit depth to 12bit). The A7rII is a fantastic general purpose camera but it doesn‘t shine when it comes to astrophotography. Cs :)

Nice find! I've had my gold K240's for like 15 years, and I've worn them at my desk like every day. I've only had to repair a busted wire in the left can and replace the cable. You're not going to get what most would consider a good headset for $50 or less, and you're DEFINITELY not going to get a good wireless headset for $50 or less. If you want something for in game chat and you don't care much about music or audio quality then you can get this headset from Logitech. Otherwise, get $30-$40 wired headphones and a $5 microphone.

Also, Windows uninstall just removes whatever the application developer wrote into their uninstaller. So often times this means files will be leftover, you can get something like the free Revo Uninstaller to remove those leftover files.

The AKG in my flair. I love it, and got this cable upgrade since my cat likes chewing the rubber part. Open, accurate, and I can hear all the good and faulty parts of whatever I listen to. I honestly don't have a problem with the "light" bass; it's not emphasized. It can handle DnB and dubstep if I need it to.

Pretty neat set of portable headphones that I was planning to pick up. Note that apparently the cable with the mic and controls kinda ruins sound quality, but thankfully it's also detachable so you can get a solid replacement cable like this one if you really want to.

The default cable is thin and only coated in rubber while the Sennheiser one is sleeved and very solid. It also delivers a better quality of sound.

Those products might look old and not gamer like but I have personally tried even $150 sound blaster ae-5 card and this $40 innocent looking card beat it hands down.

Can't tell you how many times I got called out for wallhack in CS:GO due to amazing surround depth and sound separation.

What are you trying to accomplish? The terminal inside the headphone is 2.5mm, that adapter is backwards if you're wanting to plug a 3.5mm cord directly into the headphone.

I bought the shorter cord directly from Sennheiser a couple years ago, no issues other than the cord is very microphonic. It's not exactly what you want but it's an elegant solution. Something like this would also work, no experience with that brand though.

I'm assuming you have 2 cables -- 1 for headphones, one for mic.
You'd need a long bit of shrinkwrap big enough to go around both (or just zip-tie them every few feet). Without seeing your headphones, I'll have to stick to generalities. ;)

Plug the extensions into your computer. Route the wires to front of desk. Then use something to mount the ends nicely under the front of your desk. Could just tape them together and use some nylon strapping to hold the ends in place (easy way) or could make a nice wood or other enclosure to hold them.

Just skimmed through Amazon, I couldn't find any AptXHD 2 pin or MMCX neckbands, but if you are ok with normal AptX you could get these or if you want to get MMCX headphones, these. Otherwise, I think the ES100 is a good idea, maybe just get a short cable to go with it and clip it to a shirt pocket or collar? Or run the cable through your shirt down into your pocket.

Luckily, those can be replaced easily and for not too much money. I found this one, but it's one of the first I saw. There might be better ones, but I think it'll be fine.

Here it is. Poor lighting with the monitor on haha... basically a lead from the back of the PC, wraps around the monitor, then I plug my headphones into that port. Gives it some flexibility and also will pull straight out instead of at an angle from the back or top of the pc.

I have the yeti too. Agreed, it barely fit under the bottom of mine when attached to the stand, I would always have to bend the bottom of the cable. The one you linked, or this 4ft version are both great.

No Fire TV models support pairing two Bluetooth headphones simultaneously. Here are your options.

Option 1) If your TV has a 3.5mm audio out headphone jack, you can connect a Y splitter to it and then connect two wired headphones to the splitter. This is the best option for audio quality because you won't have any audio sync issues since everything is wired, but it does mean running wires to your couch.

Option 2) If your TV has a 3.5mm audio out headphone jack but you don't want to run wires across your room, then you can connect a Bluetooth transmitter (in TX mode) to your TV's headphone jack and then pair two Bluetooth headphones to the transmitter. This is the best option in the sense that you both won't have any wires tethering you, but you risk audio sync issues and you both might be out of sync a different amount.

Option 3) Pair a Bluetooth receiver in RX mode with the Fire TV, then connect a Y splitter to the receiver, and then connect two wired headphones to the splitter. You won't have wires running from the TV to the couch, but you'll both be tethered with wires to the little receiver box on the couch. You might have audio sync issues, but you'll both be equally out of sync.

The default cable they provide does not work with headphones, as it's actually the larger plug (what are they, 6.5mm?), with a 3.5mm adapter. You can buy a different cable from these guys, which will fit much better, or mod the headset to accept 3.5mm cables (requires removing the locking mechanism).

The microphone and controls really limit you, but off the top of my head the Klipsch Image S4i, Meelectronics A151p/A161p match your criteria although I'd rather not recommend that Klipsch it'll suit your music best. If you're willing to up your budget then the Shure SE215 + cable or even the Klipsch x4i after burn-in.

I'm really enjoying the new Metallica album. The mastering/production is quite good. Death Magnetic borders on unlistenable with my 598's so I appreciate that they didn't make that atrocious mistake again.

It's not hard at all, and seems to work pretty well. You just have to control the volume on your phone since it doesn't auto-mute.

I use the headphone jack on the front of my tower and with the adapter, it was sticking out way too far for my liking. Felt like it was just a matter of time before I would accidentally hit it and bend/break it. Also, the length of the cable was super long, I had to roll half of it up just to keep it out of the way.

I honestly had the same thought go through my head, I thought is having a male+female 3.5mm hanging on the wire going to be that much lighter than the stock DT770 cable?

The answer is yes, much lighter, granted I'm using the amazon basics extension which has a really small/lightweight female end, and my 3.5mm is Amphenol KS3PC-AU which is more expensive but it's higher quality and more lightweight than the cheap alternative you buy in stores so I don't even notice the connection.

Even still, doing a chassis mount female connection is going to be less weight than what I did, but I definitely don't feel any weight hanging on the wire (At least with the DT770 which is what I primarily use).

This one has no stiffening material and also a mic.

I have both the T2 and T3 because they're different and I listen to each of them when I'm feeling a different sound signature. I think most people like the neutrality of the T2, but I found I like the slightly brighter T3 more, personally.

the connections at my jack, and right cup, have both deteriorated so that i have to fiddle with the cable to get sound. i must chop and resolder the jack and both cups (to keep length equal), or replace with new cable and just solder to the cups.

• which do you recommend?
  
• if i replace the cable, should i install small jacks at the cups (to reduce future twisting stress), or just solder in directly to the driver? (i will not pursue jacks if it would require sawing into the wood cups.)
  
• if i replace the cable, should i get this which has 3 poles at the cups, or this with 2 poles at the cups? here is the driver opened up. there's only 2 leads presently, however you can see 4 contacts on the driver. this leads to the next question...

Your Aux cord, the one you use to plug into the hearing aid... does it have 3 rings on the plug or 2? The earbuds/mic have the 3 rings on the plug, 2 for stereo and 1 for mic.

Perhaps all you need is an aux cord with a mic on it, so that it has a 3 ring plug. This way you'll have your hearing aid for output and the cord itself will have the mic. This may be the solution. These cords do exist. For example heres one on amazon.

There are others as well. I googled "aux cord with mic" and several items are out there. Some have coiled wire like this one. I'm not sure that is ideal but there are several options and design choices.

If your aux cord is 2 ringed, standard headphone jack, i would consider trying a 3 ringed aux cord with a built in mic. This may solve the issue.

I was looking for one too but had no luck. I just purchased this a few minutes ago and am going to modify it so it's shorter. It looks like I might get lucky and the 3.5mm end might unscrew and I can simply reuse the connector after I cut a few feet off the cable.

Yep, that's a good solution, I've ditched my ModMic too and just bought the Blue Snowball ICE. The more expensive version with 3 pick up patterns is only worth the money if you want to record instruments or singing.

With regard to the 3,5mm extension cable for the Superlux...just get an Amazon basics one, they are cheap enough to just say fuck it and get a new one once the cable memory gets too annoying.

MEE makes a replacement cable, and if the volume controls on their other headphones work, it might be a good sign that the controls on their cable will work.

I don't see any reason why you can't replace your cable as you wish. Just make sure the 2.5mm end has the same type of twist-lock as the original. Here is the first one that came up on a Google search. This one comes in four different lengths.

Hey Op, James from Antlion Audio here, sounds like you may have some environmental EMI that is causing some issues. I would suggest a better shielded extension cable such as https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Extension-Adapter-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00LM4ON3I/. One of the issues we had with the ModMic 5 is with all those 3.5mm connections it really opened it up for EMI. Drop me DM if you have any questions or need a bit more help.

OK, you need a DAC ( or, a long 3.5mm extension cable ). Schiit make good DACs though you're looking down the barrel of a $100 device anyway. I would just grab a 3.5mm extension long enough to reach your PC but not too long as it degrades quality and can introduce noise.


An AMP is an amplifier. Takes a signal and makes it louder and more powerful to drive higher impedance headphones.

A DAC is a digital analog converter. Converts digital signals, like from your PC, into analog signals for your headphones.

Hah yep I use pretty much the exact same type of speaker for this. It's just a crosley radio (no bluetooth) with aux in, though.

So yeah I would do the Schiit stack then get a RCA to 3.5mm cable like this or this which would feed from the back of the Vali to the B2. If you're not wanting to listen to it through the speaker you can just turn off the B2, or select a different input (bluetooth?).

Alternatively, you could skip the RCA output and just use a 3.5mm male to female aux cable + 1/4in adapter out of the headphone output.. which would go to an Aux cable you leave connected to the B2. Just switch between that aux cord and your headphones out of the headphone port.

I just use the headphone output, but as I type this I remember I saw I had a RCA to 3.5mm cable last night so might switch it.

Question for you: That box that the red connector is for. Does it do anything for you (like do you have speakers or something hooked up)? Or are you literally just using earbuds when using the computer? Because if you're just using earbuds (like standard 3.5mm headphones or whatever) then you can likely just get an audio extension cable like this one and just plug that in where, in your video, the green connection is. And then plug your earbuds into that.

If you need one that also supports your earbud's mic, then get something like this and it'll do the same thing (The headphone icon one would go into the green port, the mic one goes into the red port).

Why not just buy another cable? You're on the right track. I recently purchase the same cable from BB a few weeks back, as I decided to "hide" all my devices behind the wall where the TV is mount.

Typically, the Kinect, when given a command, would blast an IR signal to your devices. With no line of sight, the signal never makes contact. The IR cable, when plugged into the 3.5 mm jack in the back of the Xbox, will pass off any verbal commands given to the Kinect as a secondary way to send the signal. As long as the pods at the end of the IR cable are near the sight of the IR receiver on the device, the commands will go through successfully. Keep in mind, this only works for the Kinect/Xbox; if you still want to use your remotes, you will need a repeater as /u/stmaximus mentioned.

E: Also, if you find that the IR cable isn't long enough, you can use just about any 3.5 mm extension to create more distance. Just an FYI if you were unaware.

This cable is a great replacement for the stock, preference for shorter high quality cable for your desk to amp/dac.

If it's a standard 3.5mm, it will use the same industry-standard audio cable as any other audio device that uses 3.5mm plugs, unless your microphone has some proprietary plug/wire style, in which case you could be at the manufacturer's mercy.

I got this one for use with my HD558s. I'm then running a 30 ft long headphone extension (15ft from computer to link box, 15 ft for Vive cable) back to a Behringer headphone amp and then a DAC. I also have other 15 ft extensions (DisplayPort, USB, power) from the link box back to my PC.

The end result? 30 ft of Vive leash, headphone cable is cable-wrapped back to a proper headphone amp and DAC. No plugging/unplugging, and good sound quality to boot.

Granted, take everything I just said above with the understanding that I don't have a Vive yet, and it might work great...or not!

The sound is good enough to take advantage of the speakers. I’ve had this cable on long enough to not notice a major difference between using a headphone jack vs. Bluetooth.

I use this. It works for both my Sennheisers and M50x. Although, you'll probably have the same issue as it's only very slightly smaller.

I would recommend an adapter like this. Just leave it on the end of your cable all the time and you won't notice it.

So I'm in the same boat as you - plan on buying the next oneplus model, looking for new bluetooth buds/iems. Keep in mind, I'm not sure if these are available where you are, but it was suggested to me to look at TIN Audio T2 which come with a detachable cable, and also pick up the TRN BT3 bluetooth cable to use with them. That might be stretching your budget, but that's one of the options I'm looking at. Also considering the Aukey Latitude set and Shure SE112 (on the very tip top of my budget). Not sure how much I like the "collar" on the TRN BT3.

I got it solely for the fact that it is braided, and I think that braided cables are much more aesthetically pleasing than rubber cables.

Microphone-compatible 3.5mm extension cables are a separate thing. They're not easy to find. You can usually tell by the black (or otherwised colored) bars on the connector itself. Two bars is speaker audio only, while 3 bars is speaker plus microphone.

For anyone not liking the provided cable, I got This replacement cable, and it has been great.

It's surprising that you don't have a headphone jack in the back of your desktop. In any event a 3.5mm male to female cable would work. Plug the male end into the front of your desktop, run the female end around the the rear of your PC, plug the headphone plug into the female end and the mic plug into your PC.

You can get one of them at walmart for like $5 or less.

Though I don't have a link, I'm sure there are many adapters to break out the Headphone and Microphone connectors so it can be used with a Standard Computer. In fact, I would suspect most Gaming Headphone Sets would come with this adapter.

I'm surprised your headphones did not come with such an adapter. Both the adapters above are marked. One connector has a Headphone Symbol and the other has a Microphone Symbol.

You want to make sure the adapter you find is a single 4 pole (TRRS) socket that breaks out into two 3 Pole (TRS) plugs. Though likely the Mic could function only needs 2-poles (TS). But 3-Pole probably makes it more versatile.

A Headphone "Y" connector you linked to is going to be one 3-pole in and two 3-pole out. That's not going to work. You specifically need 4-poles (TRRS) in and TWO 3-poles out (TRS).

A 4-pole 3.5mm splitter works. Depending on the distance from your computer/sound card port to your head, you might also want to get an extension cable since the Cloud II's cable is somewhat short without the USB dongle.

I use this cable on my 599s. It's well-made and it matches the color scheme of the headphones really nicely. It's also a much more manageable length that the stock cable.

   NOW. Plug in the #2 purchase into the xbox one stereo adapter... then into the splitter, #1 purchase. Plug in the #3 purchase to one hole on splitter and the other end to your computers "line-in jack" or mic jack. Plug in headset cord to other hole in powered splitter.
   
   Then on elgato switch mic to the line in setting and TA-DAH! Thus recording their voice and your voice, using your headset microphone. No extra microphone needed.
   
   Note, the #2 purchase is not "necessary" but I found it better than having the bulky powered splitter hanging off the controller. You are gonna want 6ft of #2 and maybe 12' of #3.

It's the same cable as the AT headphones use. Yes it's detachable and I recommend you change it no matter what if you get them because it come with a 1/4 on the end and a 1/4 to mini adapter which is offal.

T2's use MMCX. From experience, Yinyoo is pretty consistent and are available at a decent price. These will run you 20 bucks. They have silver ones for almost double the price as well. If you're in no rush, you can get them for about 10 bucks or less off of Aliexpress.

You can get a cable for like $30. The seller states it doesn't work for the HE400S but after they switched to 2.5mm mono connectors it'll work fine.

hey OP, I have a setup question. I already have the startech adapter listed above and I have some regular headphones (Senn HD598) and a third party mic (antlion modmic). They all work fine when I plug them in to the startech connector and then plug that in to the headset adapter, but then I only get stereo audio.

If I plug my headphones into my Turtle Beach DSS2 for 5.1 audio, then I only need to plug in my mic into the headset adapter. The mic is 3.5mm but doesn't work plugged straight into the headset adapter. If I plug it into the startech adapter, but keep the headphones plugged into the DSS2, then the mic works, but the chat audio goes through the startech adapter, not the optical audio port that the DSS2 is hooked up to.

I'm assuming this is because the mic only has 2 black bands, not the 3 black bands required for the headset adapter. I see you have a 2.5mm female to 3.5mm male connector listed under the second bullet point, but it seems kind of pointless to plug a 3.5mm cord into the connector (3.5mm to 2.5mm) and then plug that into the microsoft supplied chat connector (2.5mm to 3.5mm) included with the headset adapter just to get it to work.

I suggest the Startech MUYHSFMM which is a 4-pole headset splitter. If this is still too short you can also get a 4-pole 3.5mm extension. This configuration does not use the volume control dongle. Otherwise you can just do the single 4-pole extension to the volume control.

The audio degradation is pretty minimal. You would still need to select your desktop speakers or headset which can be done through the sound properties.

Can you use a different AUX cord to check if that is the issue? This adapter might also help as I think your headphone's aux cord is permanently attached.

so your headphones are TRRS (Tip Ring Ring Sleeve) meaning it has four contacts to make the microphone work. The Audio/Mic splitter makes it so you can plug the headphones into the two ports to make it work. It takes 4 contacts and splits them to the necessary places.

Your headphone extension, only has three contacts TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve). This is why it's not working for you.

IIRC the HD598 uses a non-standard connector for the plug that goes into the headphones. It's actually not 3.5mm that plugs into the headphone but rather 2.5mm.

The HD 598SE (black version on Amazon) comes with a shorter cable that is 3.5mm without adapter if that interests you.

Otherwise, I believe there are unofficial "replacement cables" for the HD 598 that you can buy (I believe there are some official ones too but you have to scour the Sennheiser parts site) that are 2.5mm/3.5mm
