If you all want a look into the spectrum of coaching styles this book is pretty good. It is enlightening to see the different personality's behind each coach. https://www.amazon.com/Behind-Bench-Hockeys-Greatest-Coaches/dp/1629372447

u/Mike_R_5 · 2 pointsr/Flyers

This book gives an amazing look at the first 25 years of the franchise. Great read.

> Brian Macfarlane

if you find the original books for any team, you have been blessed by the hockey gods. i have this and as i said, the leafs one because i was born and it was around so i fucking read it.

To all the downvoters, make yourself a cherry and egg sandwich and tell me how you like them apples

u/sleipe · 2 pointsr/hockey

A friend just recommended this one because I was looking for something to read as well. I remembered your comment so I thought I'd share.

u/rossrhea · 1 pointr/hockey

I really liked Brian McFarlane and Ron MacLean's books.

As for fiction, Scott Young's series is great. It is for younger readers though.

u/wyshynski · 9 pointsr/hockey

Yeah, if only because of the crossover between HOF voters and the Top 100 voters.

Here is where I note that the list me, Lozo and DGB created is lightyears better than the NHL list: https://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Players-History-Other-Stuff-ebook/dp/B01NBXW34H/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510684539&sr=8-1&keywords=wyshynski

Fully agree with the newspapers. I got a couple of different ones and splurged on the frames for them and they might be my favorite thing I have in terms of cup merch. Also, I highly recommend this book put out by the Post Dispatch. Was like $12 with prime but it’s worth it.

u/oilrocket · 2 pointsr/hockeygoalies

It does look interesting, I am finishing up In the Crease: Goaltenders Look at Life in the NHL by Dick Irvin. It is a bit dated, but I like hearing the stories for guys back in the day.

I have The Power Within: Discovering the Path to Elite Goaltending on my Christmas list this year.

FranÇois Allaire's The Hockey Goalie's Complete Guide: An Indispensable Development Plan looks good too.

u/Teusaurus · 2 pointsr/hockey

If you're interested in reading more about hockey in Europe, I recommend the book Away Games by Laura Sullivan. The author visits a couple of European countries during the 2004-05 NHL lockout to follow NHLers and see what hockey life is like in the different countries.

u/r35h93 · 1 pointr/hockey

I read about it in this

Great book with a bunch of little stories, I highly recommend it

Are you open to a book purchase? I have this on my bookshelf and I think you might find it very helpful:

http://www.amazon.com/Fuhr-goaltending-Grant/dp/0919591280

Demos with photos of many different save options for hybrid goalies.

Look up the book: "This Is Russia", some of the Oligarchs paid players with bags of cash, the KHL is weird money wise. He is coming back because of other KHL/Russia issues and wants a cup. Every hockey player wants to win 2 things, gold and a Cup.....he can't do the later in Russia.

u/anacondra · 1 pointr/mvsw

Somewhat related, King of Russia was suggested on the podcast way back. Its pretty good.

u/tornfightstrap · 1 pointr/hockey

I was googling for a specific quote that appears in this book (https://www.amazon.ca/NHL-Ice-Action-Boardroom-Battles/dp/0385671466), and I stumbled upon a great paragraph from a poster on a message board in 2004....

A salary cap will never benefit the players because the NHL does not have the means of the other sports leagues to make money to really increase the cap. The cap will remain stationary because there are too many teams that are going to constantly be feeding at the teet of the National Hockey League elite. Nashville is never going to be a super-profitable market because it has nothing to do with hockey.

u/tit-waffle · 1 pointr/WashingtonCapitals

I know it's not the same, but in case your search doesn't work out, WaPo also put out a nice book: Worth the Wait https://www.amazon.com/Worth-Wait-Washington-Capitals-Memorable/dp/1629375578

u/Pinsent85 · 2 pointsr/hockey

Something like this could be up your alley. There's stories and interest pieces for every year of the NHL.

At what point does an idea turn into a sport though? I'm most familiar with hockey and have done a lot of reading on the history of it. There had been many stick and ball games before it, but at least in the case of Ice Hockey the English were the first to create rules for the game. Most people have always assumed that British soldiers in Canada standardized the game. However, recently there was a book written by hockey historians claiming the game can be traced back to England and that Charles Darwin made mention of it long before anyone in Canada laid claim to creating it.

The book is "On The Origin Of Hockey"

http://www.amazon.ca/On-Origin-Hockey-Carl-Giden/dp/0993799809

I have not read it yet, but I know it's all the buzz within the hockey world right now.
