As someone working through this but a few years ahead of you, I'll pass along the list of stuff I've bought and/or wish to buy...

Hand Tools

  1. You say you have screwdrivers, but ifs worthwhile to have a full complement of them. You might consider getting a hand tool set like this one. Also, diagonals. Can't stress that enough. Eventually, you might upgrade a lot of these, but it'll get you started.

  2. Ratcheting wrenches, along these lines. Conventional wrenches are functional, but these are much more so.

  3. Ratcheting hex key set. In fact, this one looks good. If you have any Ikea furniture in your future, these will be worth their weight in guld.

  4. Maybe a vise. That particular vice is mid-priced, but you can find well-reviewed vises at just about any price point.

  5. A good range of sand paper grits: 80, 100, 120, 150, 180. You might also pick up a sanding sponge.

    Power Tools

  6. A Dremel

  7. Maybe an electric circular saw or a jigsaw. I really don't know which I'd prioritize, but you should probably have at least one of them.

  8. If there's money left over in your budget, I'd suggest a random orbit sander.

  9. A drill press

Also, there are fluids to consider

  10. Simple Green

  11. Penetrating oil

  12. Wood Glue

  13. Mineral Spirits

  14. Linseed Oil

Of these, I'd focus on the hand tools, fluids, and the Dremel. You can always ask someone to buy you a saw for Christmas. If you have these things on hand, there probably won't be a job come along that you can't handle at some basic level. I'm assuming you don't need yard grooming tools, because that's an entirely different list.

Great choice, can't go wrong. You got the cooler right?

If you got the unfinished version hit me up if you want help finishing it. It's really super easy to do yourself so the way I see it why not save $50? I see no reason at all.

edit: Ok guys Here is a guide to finishing the Firewood 4

Here is the OG post, if you wanna see the comments.

However that guy wasted his money so:

Here is the only thing you need to buy to finish it. You can use just any rag you have lying around and super fine sand paper can be bought anywhere. FW4 even unfinished doesn't really NEED to be sanded further though, that's totally at user discretion. However if you are paranoid (completely without scientific justification) like the OP of that thread is, then here is tongue oil, which is what the creator of the Firewood uses to finish them..

Then, if you're just the hands on type, or really wanna customize or something, You can always make your own wood polish and wax.

Short, simplified instruction set.

  1. Sand unit with 400 grit or finer sandpaper according to the direction of the wood grain.

  2. Clean the unit off thoroughly, ensure no dust or particulate in on the surface of any kind.

  3. Moisten steel wool with Wax/Oil, rub into wood WITH the grain.

  4. Warning: DO NOT get into vapor path, or on button.

  5. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, ACT before the wax gets sticky. Wipe off wax with rag in the OPPOSITE direction of the grain. So, the opposite direction you put it on in.

  6. Allow to fully dry, wait overnight to be super safe.

  7. Repeat steps 3,5 and 6 in order until desired result is achieved. 3 Coats should look great, but 4 or 5 will add durability.

NOTE: After the first coat you can apply the wax with a rag if desired, or ultra fine sand paper. If you use a rag it should be a terry cloth or something else that won't leave behind lint.

Thanks! I used Modern Masters Bronze Reactive Paint: https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Masters-ME396-06-Reactive-Metallic/dp/B000I1QE4C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467854880&sr=8-1&keywords=modern+masters+bronze

Then I used the green patina activator from them: https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Masters-PA901-04-Solution-4-Ounce/dp/B000I1TH9Q/ref=pd_sim_60_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41FxhPyOHpL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=RB53F7QN5E1VNQXPRVQB

This method is a little pricier than some of the others have been doing recently, but it's pretty much fool proof. Since I'm not terribly artistic, I figured it was better to spend extra money and go the easy route :)

De-solv-it is by far the best gunk remover I have ever found. They have a contractors strength version which is more concentrated than the original. I prefer the original version for stain removal on clothes, the contractors version for tough jobs like yours:

I was wondering if that was pure, but I couldn't find a source to back it up. Thanks.

Doc's is the best price, Second is the same size but no brand name, Bestine is the priciest because you're paying for the brand, it's literally 100% more expensive than the other two after shipping.

Doc Edington's

And Heptane sold as 100% Pure Bottled Heptane

You need to open an air purge valve (I am assuming you have one or more of them) to allow the water to drain out.

The reason that it may be gunky is that it has not been cleaned, nor has had an anti-corrosion additive used.

https://www.amazon.com/Rectorseal-68712-Quart-Boiler-Treatment/dp/B008A3UEA0

With boilers, a clean system is a happy system. If you take care of this now, and drain and maintain it on a regular schedule, you should get many years of great service out of it.

It is when they get neglected that things can go to shit.

Oh, and if you're in the USA, it is available in Laboratory grade purity on Amazon in various sizes!

Your link goes to an Elizabeth Warren Instagram post.

Anyways, duct seal is usually used to set a hose bib into an exterior wall. As long as the chip isn't huge it'll work fine.
