I've challenged redditors here and on many other subs with this : Name one teen rehab or corrective residential facility that has never had a serious reputation for, or history of abuse. No one can name one it seems.
If I am being asked to help, the best I can do, is unconventional and I do not expect everyone to approve or whatever but here goes.
I wandered randomly into meeting a high level hypnotist who tranced out artists and writers for a living, allegedly helping them with the creative flow or some such thing.
He put me in a trance without my desire or consent one day, and it spurred me on to study hypnosis, being fascinated that someone could do that.
There are more than a few schools/genres of hypnosis. 99% of them were designed to attempt to help people, by people looking to help people.
I ended up reading lots and lots about therapy, as many of the hypno superstars were also allegly great therapists.
I ended up helping myself a whole lot, just from studying proper therapy books, that aren't some pop star new age trendy drivel. It can be hard to tell what to read. Where should one look?
Type hypnosis into an amazon books search. Sort by rating. Some of these books are ex$pen$ive.
Neuro Linguistic Programming is a deep school of trance induction.
Put that into google and sort by rating.
Type it into youtube. I see 65,000 videos when I sort by rating.
If you have a close friend, invite them into your study project, or even if not a close friend, someone you feel is truly good hearted and someone you can trust. Many books suggest finding a partner to go back and forth with. I've had hypnosis fights with the guy I know who told me about some books.
Don't trip out on trying to memorize or keep all the details of everything you read. Just get a few books and leave them around. Just casually browse that stuff if you don't feel like tackling a whole book at once and trying to ''learn'' it all. It;s a skill, like playing pool, or rock climbing. Just dabble around different books casually. I am sure that those two will be a great start.
If you want therapy in your life, getting to know what kinds there are out there is a good start. Many of the books are quite entertaining and fun, for clinical psychology books. The two I linked will make you laugh.
I think everyone should study hypnosis in elementary school, so it is more easily recognized when authorities, the media, and schools use it on people.
You start seeing and hearing politicians in a whole new way.
It tended to be invented for good, but is used to do bad things, as this sub knows very well. Studying and using what you read can help unravel and reframe experiences that can use some clarity and some that could use some fuzziness. If you want to be a great therapist to yourself, and want top take it seriously, you can do it if you choose to. Read enough books, and bet you can get hired as a counselor somewhere, when you tell them what you've read.
You'll be more helpful to yourself and to your friends and strangers if you just want to dabble.

Hey guys. Long time fan of this community and love the work and research. I hope this post is welcome here I felt it was applicable. This is from the streaming service Gaia, which is similar to netflix but for conscious information instead. This was a great episode and probably the best so far out of this series. I was motivated to share it here and in other sub-reddit's because of its message and deep impact. The reality we live in is inverted and we have been in a false state of perception for a long time as a collective species. This is rapidly changing as we re-disover and re-member who and what we truly are.

There is a lot that ties in with this but I really wanted to share the video. Here are some additional links and research on this as well as some books that I personally recommend. I hope this helps atleast one of you in some way, in that, I will be happy. This is my way of being service to others and I want us all to have a bright future.

the hard part about it is that there's positive things mixed up with negative things. so you're left figuring out what's what--or maybe you're not. Are you her boyfriend? I get the sense you wish you were, or it's something like that, even if you're a same sex best friend. It sounds like it may be you who needs to let go.

But without being there to fully assess the situation, I would bet it's exactly what you called it: "some sort of shortcut with dealing with a lot of personal issues." It's not that the spiritual stuff doesn't have immense truth. But all to often people new to "the path" use "the path" as a way to avoid facing their real problems. And it definitely can be dangerous. But it also can be just the outlet they need. Sometimes people need a positive outlet whatever that is, to be obsessed about it, etc, if that takes them away from their problem. One of their primary problems before usually is that they are obsessed with their problem. Maybe later she can circle back and examine it (rather than avoid it) with new eyes.

Spirituality at its core is all about questioning your own motivations and intentions. I urge you to do just that, not just hers. If you're able to be open and honest with your intentions, you may be lucky (though its not a guarantee) and it rubs off on her and she gets honest about hers. But either way, you first. Make sure your intentions are straight.

If your intentions are straight, and your coming fully from a place of concern--why not immerse yourself and learn what she's learning. Here's your reading to do list:

-Robert Monroe (the grandfather of out-of-body experiences). Read his first book: Journeys out of Body

https://www.amazon.com/Journeys-Out-Body-Out-Body/dp/0385008619

-Drunvalo (The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life). This is likely stuff she's into. Along with stuff from the Spirit Science Videos (they pretty much borrowed Drunvalo's whole speel). Here's the youtube playlist of their animations that made them famous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmN2RL4VJsE&list=PL2C2FBAB7E002EE3E

-if you really want to get into it read Thomas Campbell's My Big Toe (Theory of Everything). Read the first book.

I could list a million more out-of-body experience slash astral projection authors. There literally is millions of people experiencing mystical states my friend, and tens of thousands writing books about it. Basically your dream nature (i.e. where you invent whole realities in your head while you sleep) is closer to your true nature than what you experience here on planet earth on a daily basis. That is to say you're a sort of imagination machine. That's what all these authors are saying. There's a whole movement around this stuff. Immerse yourself if you really care. Otherwise, you're a dilettante feigning concern for ulterior motives. Your friend is on to something big here.

Thomas Campbell pioneers a concept called "Open Minded Skepticism." In western secular culture, we're too skeptical. It destroys our ability to imagine, to tap into our true spiritual imagination capabilities that you experience every night when you sleep. However, some people like I think your friend here are too "open minded." According to Thomas Campbell--and from my own experience--this conversely is problematic because it leads people to feel as though they know things they did not experience for themselves, which kills any real motivation to ask questions and figure things out on their own. In short, these people that think they know everything about spirituality can become know-it-alls, doing it for the wrong reasons, and miss what they really should be learning. So you need a balance (as with everything). You need to be open minded, but you need to be skeptical until you verify possibilities through your own experience. I.e. your own experience out of body, in mystical states, etc.

You seem like the more rational one. In Drunvalo's Ancient Secret of the Flower Life, he champions a concept of "Left Brain vs Right Brain" and the idea that male thinking is the more rational left brain side whereas female thinking is the more imaginative intuitive heartfelt right brain side. Specifically what he champions is that we western scientific secular people need to use logic to convince the left brain that what the right brain intuits is true. You need to spiritual logic to convince yourself to live in your heart. Our logical minds need to consciously understand the consciousness system we are living in, in order to live up to our true more intuitive imaginative nature.

Again, you're an imagination machine, with more powers than we currently feel and know we are capable of. According to Campbell (who by the way worked at Robert Monroe's consciousness exploration facility), we are baby consciousness in a petri dish called "planet earth" designed specifically so we can grow ourselves into higher/greater consciousness. So we live in an experiment. It's an experiment that is trying to grow us. It's also trying to get better at growing us. It's a virtual reality. And outside of this reality is more virtual realities, and so on. That's how consciousness works. Like in Men in Black when you zoom out and see one reality inside another. Got it!

So your job is to convince your left brain that a shred of any of this is true by doing your homework and reading what the many who've gone before you have said. I invite you to amazon.com. Good luck!

Hello, I am an engineer and am very analytic in my thinking as well. I had a series of life experiences a few years ago that opened me up to things like meditation, hypnosis, and past lives among others. After reading Dr. Michael Newton's books 'Journey of Souls' and 'Destiny of Souls' I decided that I wanted to do a past life regression and have my own personal experience. I did this because I wanted to know first hand what I would remember, how it would feel, and how it might all fit in with my issues I'm dealing with in life today. It was such an amazing experience that I recently decided to take a class to get certified in hypnosis.

After reading your post I realized I might have a perspective to offer that might assist you. This is my opinion based on what I've learned and what I've experienced, so take it for what it's worth. First of all, in my hypnosis class I learned that hypnosis is really just a term used to describe a state of mind that we all enter naturally without realizing it. When we work with a hypnotist, we are working with an individual who not only helps facilitate reaching this state, but they also help us utilize that state of mind to work towards accomplishing goals.

The hypnotic state of mind is basically where your brain waves slow down from the normal busy beta range to the slower and more relaxed alpha range. A deep trance state is even slower still where your brainwaves enter the theta range. Delta is where we go unconscious and dream/sleep. These brainwave states are natural and like I said, we go into them all the time without realizing it. When our brain waves slow down our conscious mind moves closer to the subconscious/unconscious mind where our habitual thought patterns originate as well as our intuition. With a focused effort you can consciously access these programs and insights to help you to accomplish your goals.

When we read a book or watch tv we tune out all the external noise going on around us. We immerse our imagination in the story being told. This can be categorized as a state of hypnosis. When you get into your car and drive on autopilot while deep in thought, this is a state of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a participatory event and although you become more suggestible in these states you are still you, and you are still very aware of who you are and what you are doing.

One of the reasons some people are less hypnosis friendly is because it requires a 'trust' in order for us to truly relax to this state with another person. There is also the factor that if we are overly analyzing everything that is going on we really aren't relaxing and letting our brain waves slow to the alpha state. There are many factors at play. My advice would be to learn how to let go and trust the process. Be more on board with doing it than you are in resistance to it. We can all be torn on certain decisions. Hypnosis only works when you truly are ready to move on and accomplish goal X. If part of you really doesn't want to accomplish goal X, then that part of yourself will sabotage the process. We can be incredibly conflicted creatures, especially those of us who overly analyze everything.

Get the notion that you are a difficult case for hypnosis out of your head. You go to this natural state several times a day, every day of your life. The only difference is that in hypnosis or meditation you are actively working to accomplish a goal. Hypnosis is facilitated and guided by somebody else. Meditation is self guided. Repetition makes a difference too. This isn't magic. There is a reason why things work the way they do. The more you focus on your goal and work at it, the more likely you are to accomplish it.

I hope this helps. Sorry its so long. Let me know if you have any questions.

Regarding note-taking:

I've seen studies that say the mere act of note-taking itself helps you absorb some material-- even if you never go over the notes again.

Of course, some types of material are lots more difficult than others, and so you couldn't be expected to get by simply on a single pass of note-taking, and then discarding your notes (like most engineering classes, for instance).

In many technical subjects, missing a single critical point or bit of info can throw off all the rest of a class. So it helps a lot if you can get an accurate and comprehensive record of what a teacher tells the class, and writes on a chalkboard. However, most people's note taking techniques cannot keep up with the speech and writing of many teachers, who might be lightning fast in their delivery due to having presented the same material dozens of times or more. Tape recorders often don't help either, as they still require transcription to be useful, and it can be tough to find the time to sit through the original lecture a second time to do it. And you still run into the problem of being unable to transcribe as fast as the verbal speech (and in a recording, you also lose the chalkboard visuals).

I believe the rapid note-taking technique involved dropping all or most of the vowels in words as you wrote them. The resulting abbreviations were still remarkably legible, but took much less time to write-- and so you could keep up with pretty much any lecture much better than most others.

(Please see the book for details though; after 30 years I could be forgetting something important here).

Regarding hypnosis, yes, it's good to be concerned about mucking around too much with your psyche. Lots of people do this much too cavalierly with drugs (and sometimes pay a terrible price).

On the other hand, hypnosis is also pretty safe-- much safer than lots of other things many people routinely do to themselves on a daily basis-- unless maybe you're trying very hard to make it NOT so.

I have to admit I probably went too far with hypnosis personally-- because I really liked the idea of getting some of those superhuman capabilities various folks talked about, both in fiction and non-fiction related to the topic. However, in real life, what few people do attain amazing powers through things like meditation and the like usually only do so after many years, and tons of other mental and physical disciplinary measures-- plus have an expert mentor guiding them the whole way: unlike a college student (like me) as eager to jump into something as William Hurt was in the film Altered States. Yikes! That was me; and I sort of got into some things as weird and scary as Hurt did in the film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080360/

But I went to extremes: and KNEW I was going to extremes. There's plenty of natural safeguards against going too far with hypnosis; plus more safeguards you can add manually as you go along. In my case I eventually was trying to do my best to get around all of those. Yikes! Ha, ha.

Quite a few years later I would actually get into a similar pickle with lucid dreaming, and find myself desperate to get out of it again, too.

The main book I used to get started with self-hypnosis I found in the Whole Earth Catalog: Self Hypnotism by Leslie M. LeCron. I think the link below points to the same work:

http://www.amazon.com/Self-Hypnotism-Technique-Daily-Living-Signet/dp/0451159845

I'm gradually writing up all my personal experiences online, in a list of stories which run the gamut from straightforward autobiographical, to epic science fiction. I've presently got a chronological outline of them all here (please excuse the creative presentation format: I'm also striving to make a living with them).

As to lasting benefits from the Silva Method-- it's really hard to separate out lasting effects from any particular single thing I tried along the way: for everything tends to have some sort of effect on you, good or bad, big or small. And sometimes you can't ever realize or define such an effect except under very specific circumstances; circumstances you might well never come to meet.

I do remember the Silva book sure was good at motivating the reader to do the exercises. And the mental exercises eventually became excruciatingly difficult. Sort of like weight-lifting for the brain, maybe. But I'm not sure if it offered lasting benefits or not, to be frank. But perhaps it at least had as much effect on my brain as striving hard to understand differential equations in college did.

Maybe the real answer to your question lies somewhere in my online stories. Where you could judge such effects (if any) for yourself.

I'm 34 now. My parents are both narcs but my mom actually more so. It's come to light a lot lately with behaviour toward my sister in law and I'm starting to see it with my wife as well.

I tend to be more assertive than my brother with my parents and my wife is more sociable than my sister in law so they've become the targets more often - they also have the only grandchild so far. Problems around this dynamic is where we're at as a family but I was very much in your shoes throughout my "prime" dating years.

I know our problems may not the be the exact same, nor have the same causes, but I was very much a people pleaser as a result of my upbringing and to some extent still am. This translated into being a pushover with friends, passive with women and low self-confidence in general despite having great social skills and a wide variety of hobbies and interests.

My suggestion is to not focus on just women and dating per se, but focus on you as a person in multiple aspects of your life. I think a strip club would only give you a skewed view of women because they're paid to show you the exact attention you want - you didn't "earn" it by being yourself and learning how to interact with people who aren't just performing to get your money.

Since my parents always knew better and were judgemental control freaks, I found I basically had to figure the more social aspects of life out at 26 when I moved out of my parent's house for the first time. That's when I grew some balls and did things on my own where I gained a lot of confidence. Online dating was a huge help because it's different from the traditional way - you learn about each other a bit then you meet in person if you both want to. It's important to develop chemistry ASAP in person but at least the ice has sort of been broken via emails, texts and phone calls first. You can develop your own style for meeting people and get to a comfort level around women and dating this way if it works ok for you. You'll be on plenty of first and only dates with people but treat them as learning experiences because that's what all dating is anyway.

Other things that helped me was hitting the gym, a podcast called "The Art of Manliness" and this book that I heard about on said podcast - https://www.amazon.com/Not-Nice-Pleasing-Speaking-Unapologetically-ebook/dp/B076VVH14M/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1537974726&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=saying+no&psc=1

I'm no expert, just sharing my experience in hopes that one little tidbit of info helps. Best of luck!

u/awarenessis · 2 pointsr/threekings

Congrats and welcome to the club...or maybe almost to the club (though it sounds like you were possibly close). :)

There are tons of books out there on the subject of Out of Body Experience / Astral Projection. You will find that authors generally fall into one of three categories: -1- traditionalists (with occult explanations for OBEs); -2- realists (believe OBEs are entirely internal experiences, lucid dreams, or some other natural phenomena / hallucination); -3 - mystics (believe the realms explored are real or diverging realities / planes of existence).

I've read and amassed a small library on this subject because it became very important to me when I started regularly having OBEs. Through my reading and personal experiences, I definitely recommend starting with two of the better known authors in the mystical camp: Robert Monroe (who has already been mentioned), followed by William Buhlman. The books you want are Journeys out of Body and Adventures Beyond the Body. These books will do a good job of covering many great OBE techniques, as well as provide inspiration and motivation. They're good reads too... :)

Some may recommend books by Robert Bruce, but I would advise against his stuff (at least in the beginning)...his energy work is an interesting approach...however, if your goal is to gain OBE / AP quickly, there are better methods.

I am currently working my way through Explorations in Consciousness by Frederick Aardema. This book is very very good. I would go so far to say that it is possibly my favorite book on the subject. The author does such a great job of pulling together information on the subject from all sides...it is (mostly) a non-mystical take on OBEs, but completely objective and inclusive of all possibilities.

Anyway, the topic of OBEs is something that is very personal and you should formulate your own conclusions. Give it time though and remain open. Read as much as you can on the subject. I think you'll find though that once you have a full-fledged OBE, you will figure out what you believe rather quickly. For me, I simply "knew" it was real. Hard to put in words, really beyond this knowing.

Ask him if he'd consider hypnosis, either from an experienced hypnotist or through self-hypnosis. I've used self-hypnosis in the past to overcome some issues of losing attraction for my partner .

The book that taught me how to do self-hypnosis is called Instant Self-Hypnosis: How to Hypnotize Yourself with Your Eyes Open (http://www.amazon.com/Instant-Self-Hypnosis-Hypnotize-Yourself-Your/dp/1402202695/), but you can find other books as well as free info on the web about how to do it.

The way self-hypnosis works is first you use an induction script to get yourself into a hypnotic state (which feels awesome, btw!). They you use a suggestion script to give yourself the information you are trying to work on and change in your life. He'd have to write his own suggestion script, I imagine, since his situation is kind of specific to his relationship with you (how to write your own script is described in the book I mentioned above). His script would focus on things particular to your situation, like "When I look at thsad, I always get turned on. She makes me hard every time. My penis gets especially sensitive whenever it touches her body. Being inside her vagina makes me incredibly horny and makes my penis feel amazing. Her vagina makes me want to cum so badly that sometimes I can't stand it. Every day I get more and more turned on by her. I have the best sex of my life with her, and it just keeps getting better and better." Etc. etc.

He might have to self-hypnotize himself and use an induction script followed by his self-made hypnosis script many times, like every day for a month, for example. Eventually, it might help him overcome some of his conscious and/or subconscious blocks to enjoying sex with you.

I don't know if hypnosis would work for him, but I can honestly say it has helped me. It might be worth a shot as one tool in your overall approach to dealing with this issue.

I'll just add an echo for Mind Play - A Guide to Erotic Hypnois by Mark Wiseman

There are a number of erotic hypnosis groups on Fetlife. Which is a route to finding events near you and other people doing hypnosis.

For books I also like to recommend:

Monsters and Magical Sticks. There's no such thing as Hypnosis by Steven Heller

Trance-Formations Neuro Lingustic Programming and the Structure of Hypnosis by Richard Bandler & John Grinder

Specifically the Exercises I, II and III :)

Before Mind Play came along and became the Defacto community standard this was my go to recommendation:

Look Into my Eyes by Peter Masters

Your wife will know you are both new at this. One common bit of advice is to "Be The Hypnotist". Which is to say have absolute confidence that what you are doing will work.

The moment you have success - and with a willing partner like this there is no reason you won't - it gets easier to build on that.

Humans have a habit of rationalizing. Which means afterwards they say "I was just playing along" or "I didn't feel hypnotised", which can be one of the hardest parts to overcome. Having some experience and being pretty damn sure they were hypnotised it got easier after convincing them they were.

There are set pieces out there that utilise an induction and the 'convincers'.

In the UK Anthony Jacquin or Jonathan Chase present similar training material for Street Magic.

Here's there set piece.

Here's there inductions and if I got the link right there should be a whole series in the playlist.

(If you want to look into that more then "Reality Is Plastic" by Anthony Jacquin )

But that's not erotic or in the bedroom. His style is chatty and sharp and he might have picked the volunteers from the audience.

So how do you do this in the bedroom?

It wouldn't hurt to "do a roleplay". In which she imagines she is the best hypnotic subject ever and for want of a better explanation, plays along.

It can be that simple.

Before, During and After try and get your partner to talk about her experience.

Remember the way she describes things - because if you use similar language it will work better.

(That's what the exercises in Trance Formations cover).

On the subject of audio files. It may help you a great deal to study how others talk. Hypnotists have 'a voice'.

You can also listen to them without going into Hypnosis and you can skip through parts.

May a few minutes of induction and then to half-way through to get to the 'content'.

Your wife may listen to a few files and just find them very erotic - in which case you can use the suggestions that they are using as material to hone in on what she likes to hear.

I'd highly recommend you check out Ainslie Meares on Meditation ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ainslie-Meares-Meditation-Dissolve-pain-Tap/dp/0646966936/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= ). I'd been plugging away with a couple of meditation practices over the last few years (breath awareness and mantra based techniques) with varying degrees of success, but a few weeks ago I saw a dude in this sub recommend this book. Since then I've smashed through it and started practicing the technique, and good lord I'm feeling better. My general sense of anxiety and stress has completely dissipated, giving me back my sleep, and I feel like I want to reconnect with people I've left by the wayside in recent years. Other side effects (probably due to not being stressed and getting proper sleep again) include a noticeable jump in my workouts and physical fitness, a greater sense of empathy but also critical thinking without getting sucked into cyclical thought patterns, and just a more general enthusiasm for life.

the technique itself is probably one of the simplest I've ever read about, so simple it almost seems too good to be true. I'm about to start my second read through to make sure I've got the nuances of it down. this is my new 'go to' whenever anyone asks me about getting into or deepening meditation. It's been written from the perspective of a mental health professional who did his own investigations, firstly into hypnosis and then later into meditation.

> I don't believe that a worldview that (for instance) legitimately believes in an afterlife will generate the resolve necessary to commit oneself to solving these problems.

I believe in an afterlife - not based on stories passed down by religion, but based on information collected from individuals who had died for a while; based on scientific investigation that has refuted pure materialism; and based on consistent reports collected from individuals under hypnosis, especially the work of Michael Newton - 1, 2. Brian L. Weiss is another author who has published his experiences with clients under hypnosis (e.g. 3), but a skeptical reader will want to read Newton first for a more comprehensive, less anecdotal treatment. There are reports where it was possible to confirm memories of past lives as recounted by children. Such stories are not scarce - if you frequent the right subreddits, you will see a few per year, for instance this one. Of course that's anonymous and easy to fake, but that's why we have this information from many sources.

You will probably need a personal experience to make any of this subjectively credible to you. You can't believe in electricity until you can feel it, or see it at work.

But none of this conflicts with what you wrote here:

> To advance, humans will need to deal with the ongoing anthropogenic mass extinction, reverse global climate change, sustain their explosive population growth, and eventually find ways to colonize other worlds.

I fully agree with this - and so does the above spiritual narrative. The works of Newton and Weiss both contain warnings from non-incarnated beings - call them guides - who emphasize that humanity needs to solve such problems, and that if we don't pay attention, we're on a good road to fuck up majorly.

Belief in afterlife provides context and perspective for our lives here. It changed the following attitudes for me:

  • It becomes nonsensical to pursue an indefinite lifespan for the body, if the body is just a temporary vehicle intended to provide experiences needed by the soul.

  • It makes much more sense to act selflessly and with love, rather than out of a hard-nosed, thick-skinned, rational self-interest.

I see these attitudes as helpful in terms of contributing to solving the world's problems. If this was a purely materialist universe, then the rational end-game for me would be trying to develop augmented intelligence so that I can be among the first to become transhuman. I would hope to be part of a first wave of augmented intelligence pioneers that would render the rest of humanity obsolete. I wouldn't care about the outcomes for anyone but the people I know and care for. If I can make it off the planet and maintain a high quality of life in space, then for all I care, the Earth and its degenerate, monkey-like inhabitants can go to shit.

With my belief in the afterlife, I have a new interest in not selfishly pursuing transhumanism, but rather helping fix the planet's problems in a way that includes everyone else in the solution.

My argument is that belief in an afterlife can be an essential component in favor of solving the problems you listed - rather than opposing them. In fact, I would argue you aren't consistent in your materialism if you care about trying to solve the world's problems, instead of becoming rich and transhuman only for yourself.

Please do yourself a favor and quit smoking. I'm so glad I quit 2.5 years ago.

The thing that made it super easy for me was my friends book. She gave it to me at a Hypnosis conference her and I go to every year. I quit the day after the conference in Las Vegas 2.5 years ago.

It made becoming a non-smoker super super easy.

Don't get me wrong, there are still days where I'll have a craving (its not often, maybe once every few months). Now I'm able to use a super easy technique that takes me less than 10 seconds to push the cravings away.

OK. Regardless of what you choose to do with it, I want you to be clear that you're engaging in hypnosis. Hypnosis without all the hard, complicated, induction bits, but hypnosis none the less. You need to be VERY careful about what you say and how you say it.

In particular, the unconscious mind doesn't really understand negatives at all, and will interpret just about anything as a command. So if you say "Now you don't have to want a dog anymore when you're awake!", this will be taken as a command to want a dog when she's awake.

As long as you stick to describing scenes, it's probably not a big deal, but something you need to be aware of none the less.

It would probably be an excellent idea to pick up a good book on hypnotherapy. I'm personally fond of http://www.amazon.com/Trance-Formations-Neuro-Linguistic-Programming-Structure-Hypnosis/dp/0911226230 , but that's mostly because it's the one I read first. http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Hypnotic-Suggestions-Metaphors-Corydon/dp/039370095X looks like it might be a good choice in this particular case (since the induction is already done for you), although not for beginners. Amazon has various suggestions off of those that might also do well.

Why thank you!

The issue is there are loads of super in depth clinical books (which deal with stuff you will never need to know in this line of work) or the utter rubbish stuff that says it can make your boobs turn into alpacas or whatever. However, once you filter that there are lots of good books out there. Here are a few I suggest:

u/Iheartburritos · 3 pointsr/UniversityofReddit

Hypnosis is surprisingly easy to learn and it is something that you can teach yourself virtually right away. The first time I learned about hypnosis, I ordered http://www.amazon.com/Look-Into-My-Eyes-Hypnosis/dp/1440449864/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1345509335&sr=8-2&keywords=look+into+my+eyes and http://www.amazon.com/Hypnosis-Beginners-Awareness-Achievement-Llewellyns/dp/156718359X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345509321&sr=8-1&keywords=hypnosis+for+beginners after seeing some suggestions by hypnotists on reddit from an AMA about 2 years ago (I believe it was reddit anyways).

Hypnosis for beginners offers direct scripts that you can read from (my sister with absolutely no idea how hypnosis works was able to hypnotize someone her first time trying it by reading the first script in the book) and the other one is more about ideas and how you can use it with a partner. Truthfully, I barely read either of the books because you realize quickly that you can wing it and improvise the hypnosis sessions yourself and that is what I have always done.

The biggest factor in hypnosis in confidence. You are leading someone into a state of deep relaxation and the way you speak must reflect a certain combination of calm and relaxing as well as confidence and authority. Whenever I start a session, I use a certain hypnosis voice (it is talked about a little bit in the look into my eyes book) and the voice is both commanding and very "flowy". You do not want anything to happen during the session to bring the person out of hypnosis so everything must flow very well.

The other big factor with hypnosis is trust. The more that the person trusts to be vulnerable with you, the far easier it is to successfully hypnotize someone. This is why hypnosis works very well with SO's and honestly it is by far the most fun (you can get VERY creative). I don't think I'd be able to run any sort of course or anything on hypnosis but I can certainly try to answer questions and get you to the point where you can do it yourself.

u/firesnakeprophecy · 3 pointsr/conspiracy

You don't need to be a psychic because everyone already is a psychic.

As far as practice, it really takes 3 weeks before most people will see improvement with any new skill. I would even say give it 3 weeks for the shock of change to wear off and more like 3 months to really feel comfortable. (Kind of like going to the gym). This M.D. talks about the 3 weeks thing early in this book.

An interesting take on psychics currently employed in government is when Robert Monroe talks about bumping into a secret service agent in the astral when the President was visiting his town (I think it was his first book. You gotta wonder if those secret service agents are being trained in all forms of security detail - including psi attacks.

And if psychics in groups can do defense work, I"m sure they can do offensive work as well. This is the conspiracy forum and I don't have any hard evidence, but you gotta wonder how someone like Tiger Woods falls off so hard. Gets caught in a scandal where he loses billions of dollars in sponsors.

You think the guy down the street gets pissed losing a few thousand on NFL Sunday? Imagine how mad sponsors would get after losing billions? (You can't exactly lay physical hands on a figure as prominent as Tiger Woods - very similar to all the "meltdowns" we see from pop music stars all the time - Kayne, Britney, etc).

How many back surgeries is Tiger going to have? Someone needs to tell this guy he needs a witch doctor not a surgeon. And he's been "cursed" by a powerful CEO sorcerer with even more powerful military wizard friends with lots of cool top secret toys.

It's not that much of a leap to imagine corporations like Nike or AT&T have access to classified government technology either. Colonel Corso in "The Day After Roswell" even says this is how they keep reverse engineering secret. The tech gets farmed out to private corporations and reported to the public as "breakthroughs" or "discoveries" from a Boeing or Dow or whoever.

Mind control tech would fit right in with athletes or musicians or actors (Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Scientology, etc). Nothing becomes popular or gets to the top of any charts that will reach millions of people without first having to confront this very real reality of thought control and influence.

Tiger Woods father was a very smart man. He didn't say his son would be more important than Gandhi without good reason. I just don't think his father knew the specifics of how the impact would play out.

Also, the topic is not remote viewing, but I do cover the surface layers of it in a videocast I just did about aliens. I had promised in an earlier thread I would eventually get around to telling that story so here it is if people are still interested: Part 1, Part 2 - and I hope to have Part 3 next week.

u/napjerks · 3 pointsr/OutOfBody

You definitely weren't dead but it sounds like what is commonly described as a near death experience. Maybe it has something to do with the tension or stress of being in the room by yourself as the known center of attention all the while being required to lie down and the mind reaches out for a bigger perspective. We still really have no idea why the mind does this when it does. But the situations are very predictable and this episode matches the classic scenario.

Of the few people who can share a story like this it usually only happens once in their life. And then there are the rare people who have it several times. Consider reading one of Robert Monroe's books just for fun.

And consider yourself lucky. Maybe a little bit charmed. You have a great life experience to share with others who are open minded. Thanks for sharing it here.

u/ThePolymath · 20 pointsr/IAmA

I recommend reading as a good start. The two best books for beginners IMHO are: Hypnosis for Beginner's by Hewitt and The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Muprhy. The first is a great intro to all things hypnosis, the second is all about the subconscious which is what hypnosis taps into, just avoid the religious undertones if that isn't your thing.

I think I will do an edit up top and explain how hypnosis works because there are a few people that have asked already and this AMA is still young.
It works best with people who are creative and have great imaginations, the better your imagination the more likely you will be able to be hypnotized and get to deeper levels.

As far as not working well, you have to want to be hypnotized for it to be successful. There are lots of "tricks" for people who are resistant to it, but if you sit down in my chair and say, "I bet you can't hyponotize me, go ahead, try" then I will not be able to hypnotize you. It is also much harder for very analytical people and paranoid people because the ability to let go and relax is very important.

u/jadedapprentice · 1 pointr/exmormon

I'll start with an author whose work in comparative mythology is exceptional and deeply spiritual in a way that's very conscious of the difference between organized religion and spirituality. He's got a lot of books, some more scholarly and others much more approachable. Two examples here:

"Since lies are what the world lives on...those who can face the challenge of a truth and build their lives to accord are finally not many, but the very few"
--Joseph Campbell, [Myths to live By] (http://www.amazon.com/Myths-Live-Joseph-Campbell/dp/0140194614/)

“Half the people in the world think that the metaphors of their religious traditions, for example, are facts. And the other half contends that they are not facts at all. As a result we have people who consider themselves believers because they accept metaphors as facts, and we have others who classify themselves as atheists because they think religious metaphors are lies.”
― Joseph Campbell, Thou Art That: Transforming Religious Metaphor

Next, if you really want to stretch there's a remarkable series of books created from first-hand accounts from hundreds of individuals under hypnosis to map out the nature of what might be termed our spiritual home or "life between lives" - I find this to be more credibly presented and much more consistent with the many well-documented near-death experiences that are continuously being studied by groups like NDERF and IANDS and Dr. Newton's methodology makes these books a compelling read:

Michael Newton, Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives

Michael Newton, Destiny of Souls: More Case Studies of Life Between Lives

These aren't for everyone, and the idea that there is a proper place for spirituality can be hard to swallow for those who feel scarred by organized religion, but they've been helpful in my own personal journey to stay grounded while I escape a church that's obsessed with sexuality, the pursuit of money for itself above even the welfare of its members, and even the smallest perceived deviation from its accepted belief system and practices.

I trained myself in sleep hypnosis using a pirated version of this audiotape. This guy has a really calming voice and he leads you through some self hypnosis/meditation techniques intended to help you sleep.

At a minimum, listening to something like this could help you fall asleep just by helping your mind relax. For me, after practicing with the tapes for weeks/months, I eventually relearned how to fall asleep. Now I have no problems going to sleep any more. I was also working on becoming a lucid dreamer at the time, so you could work on something like that as well if you wanted. The self hypnosis techniques are great for that. They also teach you to control your body a lot better.

Also, I used to take these melatonin pills which work really well for me. They have some stuff in them that relaxes you really well, plus the melatonin to put you to sleep. One pill will make you sleepy, two will pretty much knock you out, assuming you are actually trying to fall asleep and are not doing stuff thats going to keep you awake no matter what.

I dont need the audiotapes or the melatonin pills anymore, and I have not for a long time. The pills are still nice if I am changing time zones or altering my sleep schedule or if I really need to fall asleep on short notice.

Finally, I have found listening to audiobooks to be an excellent way to fall asleep. Find a book that you really like, nothing too serious though, and just play it very quietly while you are trying to sleep. It gives you something to listen to/do while you are still awake, but it won't prevent you from falling asleep. These days I usually don't even make it through a chapter before I am out cold. Which makes it tough to ever finish a book because I just end up playing the same chapter over and over. But the sleep is good. And with that, I am putting on my audiobook and falling asleep.

Sounds like your top emotional need is recreational companionship

If you met a cool girl who wanted to hang and do stuff I strongly suspect it would turn into an emotional and eventual sexual affair.

If you want to be happy, go ahead and do that. You are currently not compatible with your girlfriend - she is unwilling to meet your emotional needs. That's the point of dating - to see who you're compatible with. Also your other comment about "Honestly, can't stand the thought of absolutely crushing her (it would)." means you care way too much about being responsible for her feelings.

Perhaps the book Not Nice will help you with that turmoil.

u/gizzledos · 4 pointsr/science

You can learn how. I taught myself years ago by recording my dreams. I progressed from basic dream recollection into lucid dreams, and then willing myself out of body during lucid dreams. Read up on it, and think about it during waking life. I recommend you read Robert Monroe's Journeys out of the Body. This way you will be more likely to think about it when you sleep. Learn to relax your entire body in bed, practice closed-eye visualization. PM if you want more info.

Oh Robert Monroe's books are an absolute delight to read. He's very articulate.

In short, he had a business in radio in the 50s. Then he started having spontaneous OBEs. This goes on for 10-15 years, and he wrote down every single experience he had. He then developed Hemi-Sync, a series of binaural beats to help people concentrate, sleep, etc.

Not overly dramatic, very down to earth books. Even if you don't believe one yota of what he says it's still a freaking awesome read. But I'm certain you'll identify with the three books. You have to read them in chronological order, that is: Journeys Out of The Body, Far Journeys and then Ultimate Journey.

Having read these books and some books on shamanism it's very interesting how often the two make similar points.

It's not magical, although I can understand why you'd use that word. I'm sure you've heard all the stories about people leaving their bodies during operations, after a car crash, things like that. Well, it's the same thing, except he is able to induce this state at will. It's not that rare, but it is very difficult for most. I can't do it. But then, I don't want to, because one of the drawbacks is you might start doing it spontaneously and have no control over it.
This book explains it all:
http://www.amazon.com/journeys-out-body-robert-monroe/dp/0385008619

There are later, far more advanced studies, but Journeys Out of the Body, along with Dr. Raymond Moody's casual study called, Life After Life, pretty much got the ball rolling on the topic in the 1970s. (I've also read books about obe's written in the late 19th century.) I found the first one the more interesting of the two.

Our survival instinct is wound too tightly, which leads to this suffering. What you see as banalities are actually the distractions from this suffering, but the distractions themselves are as material as the source of distress; and distractions are, by nature, only temporary. A better satisfaction is probably tuning into a sense of compassion and right action. Meditation will help you cultivate this, and it will allow you to approach distractions and suffering with patience and love.

Our banalities are part of a nature we choose to accept when we take this form. The form is not ideal, as I said. Perhaps because its creator is not perfect, or perhaps because the flaws are by design. Whatever the case, when you are done here, it will be as if no time as passed at all. You will look back on it like the single blink of an eye. All the strife, the pain, the disease will be a page in a book without beginning or end.

There's a trilogy of books on this subject written by the late Robert Monroe that you may find illuminating. They're listed here. You may not believe what he has to say. But consider it food for thought.

>Again, it is not their historicity that is important - you said yourself that doctrine isn't any more true because it is older and I agreed.

Well, let's distinguish age from accuracy. By "historicity," I mean the degree of verifiable reliability of a text. Something can be old but still be reliable. However, the gospels do not appear to be a reliable record. Only an old one.

>The "proof" you seek will most likely never come to you if you are approaching it from this angle. This is not something you "think about" for a while and then "get". It is something you live, and then experience. I mean this in a very practical sense.

I look at it like this. Claims of miraculous events are made about a man. He walks on water, raises the dead, casts out evil spirits, converts water to wine, multiplies fish and bread enough to feed a small army. He's purported to have said that he's the son of God. And not in the colloquial way they used back then, that we were all "sons of God" or "children of God." And not even in the way that the regional kings used. He's purported to have said that he's the direct issue of the creator of the universe. Half man, half deity, and no one comes to his dad but through him.

If this person was standing in front of me right now, saying these things, I'd back away slowly and keep my hand on my wallet. If other people were saying these things for decades, in an oral tradition where facts get mixed up and the storytellers embellish, and it's getting translated from Aramaic to ancient Greek in the process, I think I'd have even less reason to believe their claims. I don't think it's a bad angle to say, "I'm not so sure about that" until shown otherwise. What I live and experience never crosses over into a realm where such claims become compelling.

And I do actively explore the possibility of the supernatural. I just don't do it from a theistic perspective. While theistic perspectives of this phenomenon do exist, they are decidedly outnumbered by non-theistic experiences of people who have no particular implulse towards challenging or doubting the claims of any religion. Of course, I readily admit that their claims are just as potentially suspect as those of a theist. But these are claims that I can actually test.

NP. One of the things I want to warn you is to not fall into the trap of becoming a "nice guy". I suggest reading https://www.amazon.com/Not-Nice-Pleasing-Speaking-Unapologetically-ebook/dp/B076VVH14M ; basically, it's good to be grateful and polite, but too much can be a bad thing.

Also yeah, I just meant the account wasn't made specifically to throwaway for this purpose. I had an account that I stopped using too, but it wasn't meant to be a throwaway at the time so I don't consider it a throwaway.

Another thing is, at the risk of sounding too much like someone high above lecturing you... but I've learned a lot these past months and I really want to share what I've learned.

I think you should accept all of yourself, the good, the bad, the past, the present. If you are ashamed of your past, then you still haven't solved your low self-esteem problem and that will extend towards bad feelings/depression and also be an obstacle in finding fulfilling relationships.

Wow, fascinating!

I can't really offer any answers other than what you can read in Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls. I'm just going to say that if you haven't read them yet, you likely should, especially with your background. Newton's work is the only really credible (and useful!) report of the afterlife that I've so far encountered.

Perhaps it might help to mention that other hypnotists have corroborated Newton's reports, and are getting the same consistent images from their own clients as well - including people of various religions and cultures who have never been exposed to the books.

If you ever arrive at the bottom of this story involving Don, Paul, and Kurt, I would be very interested to know what you find out. I wouldn't worry about falling into some kind of vicious cycle. It does sound like you've come here in this life to break their hearts, but the way they've all fallen for you suggests that they're willing participants in the lesson. The way you feel nothing for them makes me think this life and body have been chosen for you so that you don't get scarred in the process.

Having this as an episode in your life doesn't necessarily mean that this is what your life is all about, or that it must end prematurely. There might be all kinds of different things in store for you, this might just be something you've come to do before the other things happen.

I've fallen for someone in a similarly inexplicable way as you describe Don, Paul, and Kurt falling for you. I hope that what she felt for me was very different from the complete lack of empathy you are describing for these guys. Regardless, it was probably the most painful experience of my life. I had a precognition that it would be extremely painful on day one. I asked myself, do I want to do it anyway? The answer was a resounding yes.

I seem to have emerged from the pain, for the most part, though I'm still battered and bruised. I continue to have love for this person. I, too, have no answers. I tried looking for them, but no longer really expect to find them.

Some things, I suppose, we might only find answers for when we die. I suppose it's possible to live without them. It's not like we have a choice.
