I'm a big fan of Crystal Light powdered drink mix, make 1/2 a gallon at a time, 0 calories (or super low) and most are caffeine free. They come in sealed plastic containers which then have sealed pouches in them, are cheap, easy to store, and the containers come in handy afterwards.

They regularly go on sale at super markets for like buy 1 get 1, stock up. They are double sealed, easily transported, and make water taste way better

Basically you are looking to balance carbs and protein.

Carbs are sugars, and grains. Fibrous carbs (check the nutrition label to see how many of the carbs are fiber) are better than simple carbs (think fruits, bread, rice, and other grains). Protein carbs (nuts, beans, legumes) are also better than simple ones.

I found the app, Carb Manager, to be a god send. You type in what you ate and how much and it tells you how many carbs/fiber and protein is there. Helps you get a good feel for what portion sizes you can have of things.

General rule of thumb for amounts seems to be:

Breakfast - no more than 30 carbs
Lunch - 45 to 60 carbs
Dinner - 45 to 60 carbs
With 2-3 snacks a day at no more than 15 carbs each

You will want to wait at least 2 hours between eating (for blood sugar testing). I found that spacing my meals out more like 5-6 hours with a snack at the 3-4 hour mark worked best for me.

It was also emphasized to me that I should be EATING my carbs not DRINKING them, so no juices or sodas. (That really helped with my water intake. 😋)

All of these need protein with them. My favorite snacks are Nature valley protein bar, Special K Protein Meal Bars, and Carnation Breakfast Essentials, in addition to nuts and cheeses.

It's pretty hard to be healthy if you're re supplying in towns. If you plan ahead and do the logistics, you can set up yourself up for mail drops and control what you want to eat. You should be able to eat healthier that way.

For e.g., one thing that I was never able to find in supermarkets along the way was black bean powder. They did have black beans in tetra pak boxes, but dam they were like a pound and a half or something, which is just too much. Something like this is more reasonable: https://www.amazon.com/Greenmax-Black-Bean-Powder-10-50/dp/B008193GZS

Anyways, stoveless is definitely doable, I did it, but in order to be healthy you probably need to do mail drops.

That's the one I was talking about. It has 560 calories in one can. They're really good at helping you put on weight. And they don't taste bad. They're really good if you make a smoothie or milkshake with them.

Most US meal replacement shake companies also sell their product in a powder form to mix with milk or water. For example, you can get Carnation Breakfast Essentials for 50 cents/pack. They aren't particularly calorie dense, but 4/day would give you 100% of many vitamins and minerals. I would recommend eating smaller portions of the local food for breakfast and lunch (because you don't want to be rude or appear elitist) plus your healthier dinner and supplement with 2 of these per day. One of my friends is obsessed with making oatmeal and mixing these in so if they have any similar sticky carb gruel you could probably spice it up with this.

If you're looking for something that is a total calorie replacement instead of just vitamins and minerals, then I would go more with a Scandishake product, but these are much more expensive at $2/packet (they're a medical food). The per calorie cost is actually almost equal though. This is what we feed to cancer patients and CF kids in the hospital because of the intense calorie load. They do not contain many vitamins/minerals though so you might want to do 2 of these plus a multivitamin and then you wouldn't need to eat the local breakfast/dinner. I should add that these things are fucking delicious. We make milkshakes for the kids from extra whole milk and one of these packets and it's like 900 kcal in a glass.

Low electrolyte levels will make you feel like crap but too much won't hurt you (unless it's a crazy amount).

It sounds expensive though, here are the ones that I use and might save you some money:

Carnation ones are always solid
