If you're looking to record on your Wii U, then you're probably going to want to use an HD PVR. The problem with this kind of capture card, is that it's a little bit pricey. You can get other capture cards for a lot less, but you will lose the ability to capture footage in High-Definition. Hauppauge makes pretty good equipment for this, but those capture devices run in the $150 range. Since you are on a budget, I'd see how one of these works. Personally I have never used that kind of card, but it is on the more affordable end.

Live commentary is pretty simple. Just record your voice while you play. Audacity is a great free program for this. If you're looking to do anything fancy, try the REAPER program for it's trial period and go from there. You'll also need a microphone that doesn't produce a lot of feedback. Snowball is pretty good for this.

Video editing is going to be expensive if you want good programs. I use Sony Vegas Pro 12, and that cost me quite a bit of money. But you can do it for free with Windows Live Movie Maker. If you want to do it cheap, Pinnacle has a video editor for around $60 dollars that isn't too bad.

To get your content out there you just have to keep working at it, that's all there really is to it. There are also places like this subreddit, or voltronarmy that let you promote your content in friendly communities of LPers.

Basic rules vary depending on your audience and style of play. Some people never do live commentary, others only do live commentary. Different LPers play different kinds of games, or make content that differs from playthroughs to go alongside their Let's Play series. As a general rule, avoid discussing your political and religious views so that you don't piss anyone off. The comments on your videos will be turned away from the video you just made and become some inane babble about why you should/should not believe something.

Thank you so much for confirming with me. This has helped me come to a better understanding.

I just got into deeper contact with the company that did my splitter and they said it's due to these splitters not being able to process the 4K HDR signal to non-HDR 1080p "proportionally". It was mentioned on their Amazon page, but I didn't grasp what they meant by "proportionally". But whatever this actually means, it does mean that the Elgato cannot fully understand the signal and so it ends up dark/washed out.

As for my monitor getting no signal with HDR enabled, I don't think it's meant to be this way. I told them and they asked for my monitor EDID details, so I think 1080p monitors with the splitter (from 4K HDR to non-HDR 1080p) works just fine as long as the signal is supported. But when it comes to the signal for the Elgato, I don't think the Elgato supports it fully so it cannot work with it properly. I've contacted them for further explanation and details on all of it. Since I only care for capturing, me not being able to see a 1080p image on a monitor when HDR is enabled is not a game breaker, it was just to test if the product did any HDR properly or if it was falsely claimed, but it seems like in this case, it's down to the other product and how it takes a signal.

But details aside, no matter what, HDR will be washed out on the Elgato with these devices. I can only think of that AVerMedia GC573 Live Gamer 4K Capture Card which mentions HDR support as the only method if you truly want to play in 4K HDR and want a brighter/more colorful standard 1080p image.

The only other mention of a way to possibly play in HDR with normal capture is with that HDCP 1.4 splitter. Someone on the Amazon reviews mentioned this splitter to make the signal function properly with an Elgato, but this said reviewer did not try it themselves, so there is no confirmation it works.

As for me, I am just gonna turn off HDR for now when capturing or altogether even. I think I'll forget about it rather easily since I primarily game on PC with non-HDR monitor. I just play the few PS4 HDR exclusives on occasion (though more often recently).

Anyway, thanks again for posting and following up. This has helped me tremendously.

P.S. Here's the email details written by them and not my translation (if you want their official details haha)

1) Color washing out issue due to HDR processing. As you've already seen, as soon as HDR is turned on, your 1080p signal gets washed out. Our Splitter can downscale from 4K to 1080p, but it can't process HDR in a 4K source signal to 1080p (non-HDR) proportionally. If there's such a thing as HDR in 1080p, then downscaling from 4K/HDR to 1080p/HDR wouldn't be an issue. Additional scalers are needed in order to downscale HDR from a 4K signal into a non-HDR 1080p signal. This color washing out issue is what you're seeing with your Elgato capture. Unfortunately, there's no solution for this issue currently.

2) For the signal issue with your 1080p monitor, could you please send me the make and model for this monitor? If possible, please help extract the monitor's EDID information for us to analyze. Attached are some instructions for extracting the monitor's EDID information.

For your setup, you only need to keep the EDID DIP switch setting at default (all up).

Seems like no one is getting your idea. If you only want to capture, edit and upload or stream directly, you don't need to spend too much. There are two important parts that you need to consider if your idea is to play and record from a console at 4k60: 1. A video capture card like Elgato 4k60 pro ($271 USD) 2. A HDMI splitter that let you play and record at the same time at 4k60 Gofanco Prophey splitter ($56 USD). For the build; if you are planning to edit on Adobe Premiere, I'd stay with Intel because you should use hardware encoding to reduce render times and Premiere only works with Intel Quicksync. For the GPU, I recommend Nvidia for stability and if you'd like to stream, the nvenc encoder is possibly the best option for OBS. Having a mid-high GPU opens the path of PC gaming at 1440p or 1080p.

The build I'm suggesting is $1232 USD for a grand total of $1,559 USD, leaving some spare cash for upgrading and buy other accessories(mouse, keyboard, webcam, headset, etc.). I highly recommend adding more storage (you're gonna need it for 4k recording) and maybe more RAM or better GPU.

Edit: If you don't mind a bit longer render times or not gonna use Premiere, you should go with 3rd gen Ryzen. Also, streaming high quality 4k video may be difficult, you should consider to scale it down to 1080p. Important: if you're planning to OC, you'll need a better cooler (maybe bequiet, noctua or liquid cooler).

Here's the deal. Get only the most necesary equipment right now, and don't skimp on the cost. Most microphones are good, and I particularly like Logitech's desktop mic as a starting point. HOWEVER, remember that the more you shell out on equipment the better it will sound.

Get a good set of headphones, at least a pair you can use whilst recording. Having the mic pick up your game audio is a bad idea. If you can get a good headset, even better. I know it's an expensive option, but I found the Astro A30 to be totally worth every penny (start with just the headset, get a mixamp if you want to use multiple audio sources without switching around cables)

As for a capture device, there's plenty of options, but again, remember that the more you pay, the better quality the capture will be and the better the software will be for capturing. I personally don't use a capture device, but I have a friend who uses a hauppage HD PVR and swears by it. Also remember that the device you get may or may not be usable for live streaming if you want to get into that. Also keep in mind that the low cost recording devices are fairly limited in what they can do. They might be good for older consoles and the wii, but they won't be good for the 360 or ps3 at all.

As far as software goes, invest in a copy of FRAPS for PC recording. You buy it once and they give updates for free. Also get editing software. If you record both the mic and the game audio to the same file (like how fraps does it) you won't need anything special, just something to re-encode the files so they aren't so huge. I can't remember what I did before just dropping in my video to Sony Vegas, but I like SUPER for converting most things. If you want to get into live streaming, you'll need Xsplit it's the easiest way to get streaming up and running.

I use a Roxio Game Capture that I got for $80CDN, but Amazon has for much cheaper, but apparently it only captures at 480p.

This model is component video only, but they have a more expensive model that does HDMI model as well.

It works well enough; does pass through video to your TV so you can play while capturing to your computer. Since the hardware does all the compression with the video, even a laptop with a modest C2D processor is able to handle it.

Here's a Roxio propaganda site and here's a video review I came across that seemed pretty fair to me.

The problem is they're all going to be compressed somewhat by the external device. If you want super-sharp grabs, you're going to need something better that doesn't do compression on its own, such as a frame buffer grabber like the Black Magic Intensity. Happily, they have come down in price quite a bit.

Hope that helps.

I have been doing just that myself, been saving old family movies before they are un watchable, I use https://www.amazon.ca/Hauppauge-Colossus-Express-Internal-HD-PVR/dp/B00WMJMDG6/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1/141-6523776-5836914?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1494403343&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=Hauppauge+Colossus+2+PCI+Express+Internal+1080p+HD-PV but because VHS only uses Av and not comp I had to get this https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00LN0AGIM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 to convert just the video to hdmi, the card comes with an s video to av so I use that for the sound and av for picture, because the program that comes with the card is good for tv recording via hdmi in order to get decent audio and video to save I use obs studio which is free but because the video is huge MP4 I then re code that in handbreak which is also a free program to make it a smaller mkv so instead of 8gb per hour it's 1gb. Hope that helps. Also having a vcr to plug into all this helps. Luckily I already had one from the 90s

So two options:

  1. Emulators. Personally, don't love them as they are not always they best and I enjoy the genuine feel of the game on the console. It's easy to get a PS2 to usb controller for the PC and Emulators do allow you to sometimes stream at a significantly better quality than directly though the console (HD Texture packs, Mods, etc.)

  2. I would recommend this capture card: https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Game-Capture-HD60-PlayStation/dp/B01DRWCOGA/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1543023009&sr=1-3&keywords=capture+card

I personally use it myself and it's the simplest version of "plug-and-play" I've ever seen. Never had any problems, amazing customer support and just general reputability. The price can be a bit steep so if you're trying to save a bit more:
    https://www.amazon.com/AGPtEK-Capture-Video-Recorder-Support/dp/B01MYWBG1I/ref=sr_1_9?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1543023009&sr=1-9&keywords=capture+card

It does it's job, is effective but some of the reviews maybe need your consideration.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your PS2 games (MGS3 is God-tier IMO)!

I don't have any code that does it, but I do have a broad understanding of web technology so I'm confident that I could figure it out. I have a CS degree and I've been employed as a web developer for 10 years now, so perhaps that skews my opinion on the difficulty of such a project.. I would probably attempt it with Java since that's what I'm most familiar with, but you could do it with any general purpose language that supports processing streams of data.

The goal is to keep a buffer of the previous 10 seconds of AV data that had been streamed and to automate packaging it up, uploading and submitting it to reddit along with a meaningful title with one command.

One aspect would be in obtaining the input stream of AV data. I reckon the best bet for this would be to use the HDMI from the Sky box and plug that directly into your PC. A special PCI card would be required for this, as the HDMI ports you get on PC graphics cards are for video out only. Something like this would give you a stream of AV data that you could work with. I'm getting out of my comfort zone here, but I assume there would be a way to convert whatever format the sky box is providing into something compatible with web tech (ie mp4). Then you would need to maintain a buffer of streamed data which represents the video which will make up the gif. Posting it would be possible through standard HTTP requests.

It sounds like a mildly interesting pet project so maybe I'll try it one day if I have nothing better to do

All of the above is relatively doable for any proficient developer. There are probably hundreds of thousands or even millions of people out there that could do it. The other end of the difficulty spectrum would be a program that automatically posted goal gifs without any human interaction. That would have to somehow processes the AV stream and understand that a goal has been scored, work out which team scored it, and for maximum difficulty points which player scored it. I wouldn't know where to begin on something like that. The number of people that could do that is probably in the thousands, and they're probably working on systems like Tesla's autopilot and earning $200k a year

I feel like I should maybe create a guide or something in the future for how to properly record a P:M game.

I noticed you're looking at a relatively cheap Capture Card. The one you're looking at is generally considered to have poor quality and can only output a maximum of 480i. The only Capture Card I've used (and still own) in that price range is this. It can output a maximum of 480p (which is the highest P:M will go on a Wii anyway) and works really well with VirtualDub (the software you will be using). You'll also want to pick up an S-Video Cable for the Wii so the video quality is decent.

Some people will recommend that you buy a Dazzle and while a Dazzle is decent, I'd recommend staying away from it due to the massive headaches a Dazzle Recorder can bring upon you. Some models have issues with sound, some only output 480i (not nearly as good as 480p) etc.

The next step is to download Software which will capture the game that is being played. I'd highly recommend VirtualDub as it will work with the video card listed above and can also function as a video editor afterwards.

All videos that are recorded will need to have lossless codec that they go through in order to decrease the original file size. This can take a 1-hour game original video from being 500gb to 100gb. Basically, if you record without one, you'll eat up your hard drive space fast. The best (atm) for codecs that don't lose any quality is HuffYuv. The video quality will be near 1:1 as you see on the TV while also not having a gigantic file size. You can also use Xvid if you want.

Now you'll want to edit your video. Simply use VirtualDub with simple edits. Once you have your final video, you'll want to encode the file by using a product called MeGUI. It'll encode the file into x264 and NeroAAC using a video editing language AviSynth. It's all pretty easy to use.

If you want to record on your TV and computer at the same time, it'll be a little bit of a headache. Your best bet is to buy splitters and AV female to female adapters. It may look like a mess when you finally get it setup, but it'll still have no lag (or less than 1 frame).

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. There are some really good tutorials and guides over at Something Awful LP Wiki. Even though it's for Lets Plays, it'll still be able to help you since you're trying to effectively do the same thing.

EDIT: You could also drop money on an Elgato HD Game Capture, but they're really expensive. The quality is second-to-none though.

u/queen_crumpetbum · 3 pointsr/GirlGamers

I haven't recorded any videos or streamed on youtube but I have been streaming on twitch this year. I only really stream Nintendo switch gameplay. All I needed (I already had a good pc and 2 monitors) to buy for the set up;
Elgato game capture hd60 pro which I needed to link my switch up to the pc.
logitech c920 hd webcam but webcams aren't always needed for streaming - loads of cool streamers who don't do webcam and still do well with my personal fav being dreamie pop on twitch
blue yeti microphone

That was enough for me to get started and although it can be quite intimidating and weird at the start, keep going. Especially with games like stardew because there's such a sweet stardew community on twitch. I would recommend hanging out in some of these streams when you can, get a feel for the way things work and make some friends!

This might be not the best place, but are you sure about this? Professional gamers are rare, those that are nearly 40 even more so, especially in FPS games. It's not much of a career.

I mainly wanted to write the above, but have the builds as well. German prices, but should serve you at least as starting points:

I have no experience with capture cards, but from what I understand you should add something like https://www.amazon.de/Elgato-Game-Capture-Latency-Technologie-Hardware-Encoding/dp/B015E3OT54. Maybe someone else will chime in here.

For the displays:

> My pricing roughly has come out around £6k but that only includes 1 27" 240+mhz monitor

Get that one for the first build, like https://www.productchart.com/monitors/16909. For the second one a regular 1080p display should be fine.

I use OBS most of the time, Shadowplay is good too but will not work with Open GL games. Also if you are ready to invest some money i think full versioin of Bandi cam is worth it. You could also invest in a Capture card like the Live Gamer HD or the Live Gamer HD 2 I think they are both awesome depending on what your buget is and they can compress the video without the need of your processor x.264.

u/ZTUltima · 1 pointr/letsplay

Roxio Game Cap I've used both the HD and SD versions. They get a little more hate than I say they deserve. They do an admirable job and are usually heavily discounted on Amazon. If he has his own video editor this is perfect. It comes with one but it's not very good.

USB Microphone Fairly cheap but good rated USB Microphone. He can use Audacity, which is a free recording and sound editing program, along with this for his commentary.

That's about $80 but I don't know how much cheaper you could get. If he has a microphone already and computer games he can record there's always OBS, a free computer recording software. As far as a PS3 capture device though with a mic this is about as cheap as I can see. Certain gaming headsets are compatible with the PC if he has some Turtle Beaches or something. I hope this helped!

In the States, most all (everything I know of) digital cable is encrypted MPEG2 over QAM256. The set top box tunes and decrypts the MPEG2 stream, and sends the decrypted stream over the firewire port. It maintains any copy protection, so only copy-freely content will be decrypted. On my Comcast cable, everything except HBO and Showtime is copy-freely, so comes out clear on the firewire port.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_Control_Information

I have another QAM256 tuner for ClearQAM and over-the-air stuff. Conveniently, Comcast has all the over-the-air channels available in unencrypted-QAM256 (ClearQAM), so I don't need to bother with an antenna.

If everything out of your set top box is copy protected, you should look into an M-Card/CableCard tuner. This will be activated by your cable company and come with DRM software to deal with copy-once restrictions on your PC. (Disclaimer: I'm pretty sure CableCard is a US-only technology, so you may be out of luck. Hopefully this is useful to the next person to read this.)

I'm not familiar with any legal solutions to recording digital content from satellite subscription services.

An inexpensive but good quality capture card would be the AVerMedia c039. It's better than the crappy Dazzles that people use...not as good as some more expensive cards, but a much more solid base than the Dazzle, and with decent drivers.

Get 3 RCA Y-splitters and two Composite extension cables (you can get longer ones if you want).

Plug the Red/Yellow/White cables from the GC/Wii into one splitter each. Take one of the extension cables and run it from one end of the splitters to the TV. Take the other extension cable and plug it into the other side of the splitters and feed it into the capture card. Make sure the colors match everywhere.

Plug the capture card into the computer and make sure the drivers are installed. Download Open Broadcaster Software and install it. When you open it, right-click the white area under "Sources" and say Add > Video Capture Device. Give the source a name, and select your AVerMedia device from the drop down. Then in the same window, select "Use device audio" in the Audio section, and "Output to stream".

Go here to get some basic streaming settings for OBS for your computer: http://obsproject.com/estimator

Press the Preview button to see what your stream will look like, and to see if you can see the captured output from the GC/Wii. If you need to move the capture screen around or resize it, press the Edit Scene button to do so.

Assuming you're streaming to Twitch, once you've set up your Twitch account, get your stream key from twitch.tv/<your username>/dashboard/streamkey. Open OBS settings and go to Broadcast Settings, select Twitch from the service list, pick a server close to you, and put in your stream key.

Also, fix all the things OBS tells you to fix in red text, or press the Optimize button to do it all for you.

Start streaming. ta daaaaa

I'd recommend any camera with a HDMI out, A GoPro is way overpriced for the quality of the camera. They are for strapping to stuff and not having to worry if it is going to break, no filming in a studio.

As for software I'd recommend a Blackmagic Capture card. I have had the best luck with there cards and drivers. It works great with OSB Studio which is free, and works well with Youtube and most other streaming platforms.

u/elemenophea · 35 pointsr/pics

I use this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WSAWZ1M

It comes with software which you could use, I guess, but it is very buggy and frustrating to use. I instead use OBS (https://obsproject.com/). Once you hookup the VCR to the computer you set up the VCR as the capture device in OBS settings. Set up OBS to record a file of everything that shows on that device. Hit play on the VCR and you should see the VHS tape playing on your screen. OBS will capture it & when it's over you can hit stop recording and it will make the now-digital video file for you. One thing I learned the hard way is to make sure it is picking up the sound. If your computer's volume is off, the resulting digital video file will be silent.

Hope that I explained it well enough. Good luck :)

u/ajeoae · 2 pointsr/techsupport

You should be good with those. In particular you might want to bring it via component in particular if the camcorder supports it...then S-Video would be my second choice, and lastly composite.

Here's one for example that handles component: https://www.amazon.com/DIGITNOW-Capture-Converter-Adapter-Recorder/dp/B0747R2VMZ/

Personally I used a Hauppauge Colossus II the last time I did this and the results were pretty good. Just those Hauppauge drivers are a pain! https://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-Colossus-Express-Internal-HD-PVR/dp/B00WMJMDG6

As for the Firewire question, USB 3.0 should be a primary target if your PC supports it, but USB 2.0 should also likely be "ok" for DV camcorder quality footage. I'd pay the extra for USB 3.0 however, or go with an internal PCI capture card if your PC can support it.

Good luck!

I'm thinking of getting a tv tuner card, because I have a cable outlet in my room but I don't have a tv to move into my room.

The one I'm thinking of getting is this one from Amazon. LINK

Has anybody used this card and liked it? Or can anybody suggest one in the price range of $50 - $75 that they had more success with or had a better experience with?

u/hlmtre · 2 pointsr/battlefield3

Thank you. I've been looking at recording solutions for a while, and since I have a desktop PC right next to my Xbox, I bought a Hauppauge
Colossus PCIe card. The thing is tiny, and you plug your Xbox into the card, then the card into the TV. Even when the PC was off it still passed through video. Super cool.

One downside is I can record only my friends' voice output, since it comes through the speakers. If you want a slightly more complicated setup, my friend BoneKin records with a Hauppauge HD PVR and some nifty wiring and a microphone. He's got a mixer patching the mic audio into the game audio, so you can hear everyone at once. I can probably dig up a crude MS Paint drawing he made to illustrate how it works, if you'd like.

u/TAmedic27 · 2 pointsr/thelastofusfactions

Buy a capture card and stick with elgato or the HDPvr. Depends on what type of computer you have which is best.
I've heard elgato is best on macs and HDPvrs are better with windows.
Also.... you WILL need an HDMI splitter that will filter out the HDCP that Ps3 has to prevent recording in HD or else you'll have to hook up through component and your quality will suffer.
Supposedly THIS one is the best and eliminates HDCP totally so you can hook up HDMI from PS3 to splitter, HDMI to capture device, then HDMI to laptop/pc and to the TV.
Personally, I have the HDPvr Rocket which is portable and can capture on the fly. You can hook it up hard wired or record freestanding to a SD Card. Its THIS one.

u/elcanadiano · 2 pointsr/Rockband

I did not realize I failed to respond to this beyond that. I apologize for that.

In terms of capturing game footage, you need go for a capture card. I would personally recommend one that is PCIe-based if possible. Could be any of these (all are Amazon US listings, check your local country or elsewhere if applicable):

u/ThickLemur · 2 pointsr/buildapc

This one is fun! Okay so let's go numerical here.

  1. recording is cpu intensive but mostly recording software doesn't utilize hyperthreading. So the difference in the i7 and i5 is .2 MHz per core. No biggie.
  2. Z mobo are about 30% more expensive. This can vary a ton bases on the board. There is 2 data 6 gb/s. You use these for ssd and HDD. There is also two data express. These can be used for optical drives and some other things. Really HDD can run fine on data express. If you got another ssd you would move the HDD to SATA express.
  3. Yes it can. Fps drop shouldn't be more than 10% but that has little to do with the GPU and more to do with the HDD bogging down as it writes the data. It is very important that the game you are recording is installed on the SSD and that you are recording to the ssd. Ooooorrrr you can pick up one of these gizmos and not worry about it at all.
  4. it's worse because your in Australia. But yes 144 hz monitors are double to triple 60 hz at any resolution.
Sorry this took awhile but I was digging deep on some of the titles you mentioned and video cards. A non-reference 1050ti will probably hit somewhere near 60 fps on Witcher but if you want to be sure stay with the 1060 6gb. I only hesitate since your goal is recording and I want you displaying at high quality.
Here is the same build with a great 60 hz monitor. Leaves plenty of room for a recorder. Note that the recorder was in USD.

about a year and a half ago I bought a new capture card and i got this, which had just gotten support in the kernel in 4.9, and it has worked amazingly well. I have been super pleased with it. I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but i hope it helps.

Equals Awesome Capturing.

I have a Toshiba 500 GB External plugged into front USB and just one press of record button and it records. Press the record button again and it stops. The light blinks so you know your recording.

It's easy to use, easy to setup. The on screen menus are slow to load but I don't need them as I only press one button on the remote ever. It has a built in editor but it didn't work that well. I just record on hard drive. Then take hard drive to my PC and edit footage.

I love this thing. If you use the splitter I linked it removes HDCP and you can even record streaming apps like NF and PSV.

The Portable Standalone version is also really nice, although it would probably need a little setup to start streaming, but for just recording it's awesome. What nice is you can plug a usb drive into it and record gameplay even when away from a PC, or plug it into PC and use the software. Plus it's got a big red button for recording, you can't beat big red buttons.

Try a USB A/V video capture device kind of like this:

https://www.amazon.com/UCEC-Capture-Adapter-Digital-Converter/dp/B00WSAWZ1M/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1504738697&sr=1-6&keywords=USB+Video+Capture

I did it years ago with one similar to this for DVD's and it lasted me through hundreds of them. It's a bit of a pain since they're all basically the same garbage from China and terrible software support. Also, expect a downgrade of some sort from Gamecube picture quality for sure.

Back when I did this, I had to research tons because I couldn't get settings right while also considering file sizes for storage. I'd recommend trying to do it in conjunction with something like Open Broadcaster Software(OBS) since there's a lot of info online about settings for it. Though I'll warn you that getting these cheap USB devices to work properly on it might become a pain or be super simple.

Finally, I looked into doing this for PS2 a while back and basically decided I needed to go with component cables instead of the standard a/v for better picture quality, and that was even more complicated and involved more expensive and less supported devices. Good luck.

u/psych7111 · 1 pointr/blackops2

To be honest, there's no way to really do this without either buying a capture card or having someone else that does do it for you.

This is because games like COD or Halo that record gameplay don't record video but instead record actions done by players and kind of replays itself in-engine. They do this because you can record an absurd amount of matches without using almost any hard drive space and because it uses almost no resources for the game to record like this.

You can get a really cheap capture card for USB if you don't mind standard definition and it will work easily on even older laptops.

http://www.amazon.com/EasyCap-DC60-Capture-Adapter-Software/dp/B006OV01NU/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1380593647&sr=1-10&keywords=capture+card

Although I always recommend HD. A cheap HD component capture card that looks alright.

Are you doing it live? If not, you could take something like a game recorder, record the whole game, then edit certain clips of what you're choosing to talk about. I've used something like this previously: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VM4J4Y6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Nothing fancy but it works well. Something like onemanshownetwork referred to works just as well. Depends on your preference.

u/ZippyTheChicken · 2 pointsr/cordcutters

that sucks.. I know even popular devices like a Tivo are somewhat difficult to get the files off it but it is possible to get them off and save them. I think some guy wrote software that reads the episode info and renames the files and moves them to your drive.

But I used a CableCard Tuner which had 4 tuners in it.. but you can get the same thing for Antenna ..

$89 Hauppauge 4 tuner for Antenna

https://www.amazon.com/HAUPPAUGE-WinTV-quadHD-Express-Tuner-1609/dp/B01DZSVLTW

or you can get a single tuner card for $15 like I have now and get it used off Ebay or amazon

even with a single tuner card on antenna only .. you set it for a show you want to record and it will record all future airings of it .. so it could record The Simpsons at 2am when you are sleeping.. soon enough you have so many shows and movies .. you just let it run and check on it every few days... look for new movies in the listings and schedule them to be recorded.

u/Starsy · 1 pointr/buildapc

Something like this?

I'd seen that, but the 'capture card' title threw me off a bit since I'm more interested in just playing rather than capturing. But I assume there's software that can just play the incoming video instead of capturing it?

You're right - although while googling I found this, http://amzn.to/1QbJaK7 , a capture card that records to an external hard drive. Never used it so not sure how well it would work, and I think you'd need an external monitor, but maybe a possibility!

I'd also recommend trying out the software OBS to record, you can tell it to use CPU or GPU to record(not sure your computer specs but could be a better solution)

u/OnlyAnotherTom · 1 pointr/vjing

I don't have personal experience with it, but the AVerMedia Game Capture HD2 looks like a good option. Works as a stand alone box with HDMI in and through, records to an internal HDD without needing USB for data or power. one drawback is that it can't be used as capture into a PC, unlike other AVerMedia products.

Like the one you linked it's under $150 but it's not clear if it includes a HDD, so might be worth a look.

u/mistical · 3 pointsr/AskTechnology

I'd recommend doing all of this by streaming over Twitch. That way she'll be able to watch your stream from any of her devices as they all have the Twitch app (and alternatives like Pocket Plays). This will make things much easier for what you want to accomplish.

The software you'd use to stream all of this from an external capture card would be OBS, Open Source Broadcaster (free).

And finally, you have a variety of choices as to which hardware you could use to do this all with. Here are a few choices to take a look at and depending on your price range:

  • AVerMedia Live Gamer Extreme $139.99 (supports 1080p@60fps, USB 3.0 compatible)
  • Elgato Game Capture HD60 S $149.95 (supports 1080p@60fps, USB 3.0 compatible)
  • AVerMedia Game Capture HD2 $168.64 (only 1080p@30fps)
  • AVerMedia AVerCapture HD $99 (if lower budget, only 1080p@30fps)
  • Elgato Game Capture HD $125.89 (only 1080p@30fps)

If I had to go with an external capture card, I'd either go with the AVerMedia Live Gamer Extreme or Elgato Game Capture HD60 S. So read up on these and see what the pros and cons of each are.

Now as far as latency between you and her, that will all depend on your upstream bandwidth for your internet connection as well as what video resolution and fps you'd be streaming at. But in normal/good scenarios, this will be 10-20 seconds.

You honestly don't even need a PC to record TV. This Capture Card records up to 1080i 60fps or 720p 60 fps through a component cable:
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=65026&vpn=MTVGCAPHD-C281&manufacture=AVERMEDIA
You can put an HDD inside or a USB Stick and it'll record on that.
If you want to record 1080p 30 fps you case use this one:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/983193-REG/avermedia_c875_live_gamer_portable.html
If you want to record 1080p 60 fps I'm afraid you'll need a PC. This is the only capture card on the consumer market at the moment that records 1080p 60 fps:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G9QTUVE
If you choose this last option you also need a PC to record on. Something like this will do the work:

Thanks for the comment! My son enjoyed reading it at the same time. To be honest, I doubt the age thing matters much after a certain point. I'll retain the title of this series for a while longer though for the sake of continuity.

OK.

Capture cards range from the basic ElGato HD60 Pro, to professional grade Magewell cards.

I think... you would probably be happy with the 4K60 Pro MK.2 or the AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K. Both push the full HDMI 2.0 bandwidth, meaning they can support 4K60FPS or 1080p240 inputs. You wont be able to push that to twitch, but you would be able to record that locally on the stream machine with a faster SSD. If you want to record at a rate that high you would need a Samsung 970 EVO Plus or better though because the write speeds required are enormous.

After those two cards you are getting into diminishing returns so I wont go there.

I have a friend that lives in an apartment building over and she has more than two channels. I would just assume that there might be some sort of wiring issue somewhere for my connection? I've tried this with two TVs, a converter box, this, and I have swapped out the coaxial cable. I could go for some cable that is super thick but the two channels that do come in look very good so I have no idea what the main issue is.

u/SpagNMeatball · 3 pointsr/ps3bf3

This can be a bit challenging, especially if you don't have any video experience. You can definitely just point a camera at the screen, but thats not the best way.

  1. Problem 1- You need to get the signal from the PS3 into a format that you can capture. The PS3 can go up to 1080p, but Battlefield sets the max at 720p, 60fps (frames per second) and uses HDCP, which is an encryption method so you won't be able to capture the HDMI directly.

  2. Problem 2- You need a good capture card that can handle HD.

I use this to solve problem 1- HDMI Splitter One output to my TV, one to my Capture device. I connect the HDMI to this- HDMI to Component converter This strips HDCP and gives you a clean, HD component signal. The flow is PS3-HDMI-->Splitter-->TV and Splitter-->Converter-->recording device

I have access to a broadcast quality HD encoder so I don't have any recommendations for the actual capture device, but a quick google search found this- Aver Media

Some people have used this- Hauppauge Gaming Capture card Its input is component so you need the stuff above. The diagrams on their site show you using component through their device to the TV, I like splitting the HDMI better.

BTW- Monoprice.com is a great place to buy all the cables you will need also. HDMI, component, etc..
u/TheRealBigLou · 1 pointr/htpc

In my experience, integrated graphics is more than enough for a HTPC. In fact, a GPU may be a bad idea--especially a powerful one--as it draws more power. A HTPC will be running constantly and the less power draw, the better.

In all honesty, most of your money should go into storage, memory, and a quality case (for sound dampening and aesthetics). Also, I didn't know if you wanted to integrate live TV into your setup. For that I recommend either the DCR-2650 Dual CableCard Tuner (if you have a cable company that supplies a CableCard) or the HVR-2250 Dual TV Tuner Capture Card (if you cannot use a CableCard).

Thanks again for all your help.

u/smushkan · 1 pointr/videography

I can't speak for whether or not your camera can output 60fps via HDMI, but what you do need for this setup is a way to connect that HDMI output into your PC which is what capture devices are for.

Your biggest issue here is that 1080p60 is not a standard video resolution and framerate combination, so it's not a very common option on professional equipment targeted at working with broadcast standard footage.

Instead you could look at 'gamer' oriented gear like that offered by AVerMedia. They're not as robust as professional equipment and might not play nicely with professional software, but they're easy and relatively cheap.

As far as I'm aware, Premier does not support 60fps capture, so you'll need to use additional software to capture the footage and encode it. The software that comes with the capture device should suffice - it won't be broadcast quality, but it will be 60fps and plenty good enough for web use.

u/Brawli55 · 1 pointr/Twitch

For a PC - you want something with a strong CPU, moderately ok GPU (we have a 970 in ours and that works fine). More importantly, you will need a capture card to capture the PS4's video. If you don't want to suffer any video / audio delay, you'll need either an internal card or an external with 3.0 USB. Decent cards with those specifications generally start at $200. Maybe $150 on sale.

From my experience, most people who with internal use the Elgato HD 60 Pro. For external, the Elgato HD60 S. They are simple to use without much setup.

u/ITdoug · 1 pointr/Cordcutting

TV Tuner or TV Capture Card (something like this, but I can't recommend this specific one or not) for a PC will allow you to watch OTA shows on your computer. Get a recording program and you're set. You already own a PC so you're halfway there.

To add: Roku has a program called Plex. You install a small server on the PC where you recorded the show, and the shows will appear on your Roku almost as soon as they're on your computer. You get it free for 30 days and i think it's $5 to buy it outright after that.

u/roushimsx · 1 pointr/gaming

If you want to do some HD capturing, you're looking at $140 for a Happauge Colossus. You'll need to pick up an HDMI splitter if you're going to be playing off your 360 and if you're playing off of a PS3, you're going to need to pick up some component cables (due to some AWESOME HDCP-related restrictions on the platform).

Some things to keep in mind:

  • There's a delay of a few seconds if you're not using the passthrough function of the component input. Games will be unplayable unless you have the component output running to a secondary monitor.
  • There's no passthrough function for the HDMI, which is why you need to have an HDMI splitter. Again, you'll need a secondary monitor to play off of.

I have it set up with the consoles running into my Colossus on the PC next to the TV. The 360 hits a splitter, the PS3 I toggle between component+optical/HDMI output depending on if I'm capturing or not. There's a 19" monitor hooked up to the PC that mirrors with the TV, so I can use either as a monitor (typing on the TV right now). When I play games, I just change the input of the TV, but can still control the function of the Colossus via the smaller monitor next to it.

If you just want to capture off of older consoles and are maxing out with SVideo, pick anything supported by DScaler. I use a Winfast TV2000XP Deluxe for that stuff (handy for N64 games that aren't supported by any emulator).

Well, you can, but not exactly. Since you can't just load a Hi8 into your laptop's Hi8 drive, you'll have to use a capture device to record the contents of the Hi8 tape to a file on your computer. You may also want to look at avermedia ones (personally I think they perform better than elgatos). The one I have is about 100 bucks at the moment: https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-Multi-Card-Low-Latency-Pass-Through-GC570/dp/B06XRF732W

Well, if you have a desktop computer, you can buy a TV capture card which will replicate all the functions of a smart TV set/DVR, but on your computer, so you can change channels, record or playback shows, and watch live TV, same as you would do with a normal setup.

It's normally set up to take a coaxial cable input, which both cable TV and most digital antennas have nowadays. So it should be rather easy to setup and configure.

Example: https://www.amazon.com/HAUPPAUGE-WinTV-quadHD-Express-Tuner-1609/dp/B01DZSVLTW/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=tv+tuner+card&qid=1549720454&s=electronics&sr=1-3

I use this capture card from Amazon & stream or record through OBS. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00WSAWZ1M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_mT2oDbD4MMVEH

If you want you can get a splitter so that you can play on your tv but still stream or record on OBS. (That exact splitter takes a while to ship though so you could shop around.) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07RYXD4R3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vV2oDbQ17F89X

So you can start by using OBS https://obsproject.com/ to manage your sources. You can stream the sources to your server of choice using a guide on youtube. I can assist you later today on my discord if you'd like.

The sources can be organized within a "Scene", which can be changed on the fly with pre-defined hotkey combos you set.

An Elgato Stream Deck would indeed be a useful device to very quickly change to the scene you are looking for in an elegant way, and integrates into OBS.

You can then use either 2 capture cards to send the scenes from the first two pc(let's label them)

You have the Final Destination PC, (Webinar-PC), where you would send the sources from the Second PC(Software-PC) and the First (Presentation-PC.)

The capture cards will be located within the Webinar-PC and you would send the output display into those to cards.

Then within OBS, add two "Video Capture Device" sources and select each capture card.

If you are only doing 1080P, you only need 1080P Capture cards. Any higher and You'll need a set of 4k capture cards.

As for the cards themselves, you can use the Avermedia 4k card https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-GC573-Live-Gamer-4K/dp/B07DHSZC4K/ref=sr_1_5?crid=24SJC8MKYPOC5&keywords=avermedia+capture+card&qid=1558123394&s=gateway&sprefix=avermedia+ca%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-5

or the Avermedia Ultra 4K https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-GC573-Live-Gamer-4K/dp/B07DHV47HF/ref=sr_1_5?crid=24SJC8MKYPOC5&keywords=avermedia%2Bcapture%2Bcard&qid=1558123394&s=gateway&sprefix=avermedia%2Bca%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-5&th=1 if you don't have a free PCI-E card; though using these will need access to a USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-C port on the Webinar-PC

If you do not have that, you can use a https://www.amazon.com/Warmstor-Adapter-Converter-Support-Charging/dp/B073H1QVJZ/ref=sr_1_20?keywords=type+c+to+type+a+3.1&qid=1558123593&s=gateway&sr=8-20 converter.

You do need to be aware of the USB bandwidth in that case, however. 4k raw footage exceeds the data throughput of 3.1 gen 1, and requires USB 3.2 Gen 2 2x2 speeds(20Gbps) as it can get up to 14Gbps. Or firewire.

If you only need 1080P https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-Multi-Card-Low-Latency-Pass-Through-GC570/dp/B06XRF732W/ref=sr_1_3?crid=24SJC8MKYPOC5&keywords=avermedia%2Bcapture%2Bcard&qid=1558123758&s=gateway&sprefix=avermedia%2Bca%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-3&th=1

And USB https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-Multi-Card-Low-Latency-Pass-Through-GC570/dp/B00005141S/ref=sr_1_3?crid=24SJC8MKYPOC5&keywords=avermedia%2Bcapture%2Bcard&qid=1558123758&s=gateway&sprefix=avermedia%2Bca%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-3&th=1

As for your Camera, What kind of camera are we talking about? Webcam? DSLR? Mirrorless? Depending on the type depends on what you need.

u/fischurr · 10 pointsr/Rockband
  1. You're going to need a capture card to record your video from your console. Look at Elgato or Hauppauge

  2. Of course you'll need a Camera to record your face-cam, any one will do. Logitech is popular for these.

  3. Okay so you've recorded all your footage, now what? Pop that footage into a video editing program like Adobe Premiere and get to work. Crop out the parts of the game capture you don't want, layer them over your face-cam recordings, and boom. There are dozens of tutorials on how to crop footage, basic editing, etc.

  4. Render that shit.

  5. Upload it to YouTube and prepare to not be able to monetize the video you spent all that time making.
u/lulislulu · -6 pointsr/Twitch

This is not true. If he invests in a Capture card which supports compression and realtime encoding. Like this https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Game-Capture-HD60-Pro/dp/B015E3OT54/

But keep in mind that your mainboard needs to support the throughput.

Everything from hdmi to twitch is done on the card, almost no cpu power required. You still need to mix in your webcam thou.

If you want to do that with hardware you would need one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079Y77R71/

and some hdmi splitters. A hdmi cam etc.

u/sumrndmredditor · 3 pointsr/splatoon

If you are curious about getting a capture card, Amazon has both the the AVerMedia Gamer Live HD 2 and Portable 2 for $99 right now. Pretty good price for a 1080p60 card as the comparable El Gato and other such competitors usually run $150+.

I picked the Live HD 2 the other day and have been messing around with it. Quality looks sweet once I dialed in OBS with both streaming and recording. Plus, it's also an excuse to finally get my Ryzen 7 1700 to flex its muscles outside of gaming. Setup was pretty straightforward, but I am noticing some quirks as I try to get the audio to pass through to my headset instead of my current noisy headphone port to line in setup. I may even start recording more of my trash league X rank Rainmaker shenanigans as I always forget to use the built-in recorder in the heat of the moment.

u/thefoyer · 2 pointsr/cordcutters

Windows media center which comes built in with windows these days, does the rest. It has a full on guide which allows you to set future recordings and you can watch tv OTA (over the air) (I believe if you want to watch something and record something else you'll need a dual channel tuner)... and personally I prefer WMC to the software most tuners come with.

If you have just a standard cable line, yes all you need is a TV Tuner Card.

But, if you have a cable box that the line feeds into and then feeds to your TV you need a Media Center Remote with an IR device. This will allow you to change channels on your computer and it will change the channel on your cable box.

My setup in my dorm has a cable box so these are what I used:

I swear by it. Incredible little card. There's a USB 3.0 version you can use if you only have a laptop to work with.

As for editing software, Adobe Premier and Sony Vegas are fantastic pieces of software, though they may take a little effort to learn.

EDIT: I should note that due to the StarTech cards lacking any sort of pass-through, you'll need a powered splitter if you want lagless output to both your stream TV and the card itself. This is what we use

u/OfficialAndySamberg · 2 pointsr/pics

for anyone wondering how. I bought one of these and a VCR from a thrift store ($6) and recorded using OBS. (to play the 8's I used the original camera which still worked)

u/SirSaltie · 1 pointr/AskGames

1: Depends on the PVR. Though most have an audio input.

2: There's tons out there, but I can warn you to stay away from the Dazzle devices. they might be super cheap the the video quality is pure garbage.

I just bought this for myself. If I remember, I'll check back here in a week or two and let you know what I think of it.

You can also get standalone devices like this. But I have no experience with them.

if your going to get a non K version CPU, then your not going to overclock and could leave out the CPU cooler...

also, you could get a TV tuner separate from your monitor. I have a dcr-2650 it works with cable cards, and has dual tuners. Having a tuner in the computer instead of the monitor would allow you to record shows/use your computer like a tivo.

u/expert02 · 3 pointsr/cordcutters

Yeah, they seriously need to at least offer a CableCard add-on. They have 4-channel ones for about $200 and 2-channel ones for about $100.

Heck, they could just add support for specific USB CableCard tuners and call them "Certified".

Colossus

u/fkjac · 1 pointr/AskTechnology

USB 2.0 should have enough bandwidth for 2 HD cameras per bus.

If you want to use higher-end camcorders, they will probably have an HDMI output. In that case, I would get something like the BlackMagic DeckLink Mini Recorder, which basically acts as a HDMI input. It is however quite expensive, especially since you need one per camera.

You should also be wary that processing 5 HD streams at once is extremely CPU intensive unless you want to compress the video signal.

u/tenhourguy · 3 pointsr/youtube

A USB port is generally USB 3 if it is blue (in this photo, the left port is USB 2, the right USB 3).

As for capture cards, Elgato is the big brand, but mostly it doesn't make much difference. Just be sure to read what resolutions and refresh rates it can capture at.

I avoid the whole fuss about having to hook up a computer though and use a standalone HDMI capture box instead, which can also accept component. It's this AverMedia one, which works nicely, but is limited to a maximum recording resolution of 1080p30 or 720p60, which may not be to your needs. I also bought it a few years back, so the hardware is nothing new and the price hasn't even come down - it's actually gone up a little.

Anyway, I would say to consider the standalone capture boxes. The upside to them is you don't need to hook up a computer, and you won't have any compatibility or performance issues, but the downside is you generally can't livestream and you will require an external hard drive.

u/SilentBobVG · 4 pointsr/buildapc

Finally a question I can actually answer. For just normal Red/Yellow/White A/V cables I use this setup.

Option 1

  1. Go from your console to a splitter such as this. Doesn't have to be exactly this splitter but it does have to have external power or you will have signal degradation.

  2. You will need extra cables so pick up a couple of these. One cable goes directly to the CRT the other into an adapter.

  3. Here is one I have used a lot it is a solid adapter for the price. They can range from cheap to really expensive so it's whatever you want to put into it.

  4. From HDMI out go into your method of capture I use this. If you don't want stretch for the El Gato, AverMedia is also a reputable brand. Then just USB from the capture card into your PC.

Is there any reason you want HDMI? You can keep steps 1 and 2 from above and use something like this instead.

I can also answer any question you have.

Edit: this is a pci-e card

You will need a capture device such as this

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Express-Video-Capture-1080p/dp/B007U5MGBE

I have no idea if that one is good or not, but this is the kind of device you are looking for. There really is not other good alternatives as far as I know.

I didn't have this exact one, I had the HD60 and it worked horrible with Smash for Wii U so I switched to an AVerMedia ExtremeCap U3. It's not perfect (sound bug for the first ~2min when streaming) but I had nothing but problems with El Gato so I tend to stay away from their products now.

The Avermedia Game Capture HD2 captures straight to an external hard drive or USB memory stick, no need for a computer. Any PS4 vids on my channel are recorded with it if you want to see the quality (I won't link any to avoid spam but my channel is in my flair if you want to go there yourself).

Maybe you could use this, but I have no experience with it.

Thing is the issue happens even when I'm just previewing using either software, so it's not like I'm trying to stream in that moment. Recording locally shows the same. Very frustrating. I ordered the AVerMedia Live Gamer HD 2 off Amazon to try it out later today. If it works as it says on the tin then the Elgato is going back and getting a scathing review on every outlet I can find.

The only way i have found to do this is with one of these. The HDMI is output only on the retina MacBookPro. An HDMI to USB capture card while expensive will work. The one I have linked to is the one I have my eye on.

Edit: The reviews seem to indicate little to no lag on this one.

Oookkk...now I see the light.

This is the card I was looking at. I guess I failed to see the fact that it's single tuner.

I had been looking at the HDHomerun but I think I was just too dumb to realize what it really was, you know? I think, after seeing the refurb option, I will go that route. I kind of hate to be reliant on WMC honestly, but it's either this or spend hundreds of dollars on a Roamio, or Tablo/Simple.tv+externalHD option to get a guide/DVR.

Thanks VERY much for your help!

Here is my reccomendation, but I will tell you this is not a recommended way of using a game system and will put a burden on your PC. So I will ask if you are not recording or streaming why would you want to do this?

I'm not sure what your question is, but I think you're asking how to get the VCR output to a computer. You can use any number of composite-USB capture cards. Back in the day only FireWire had enough throughput to handle real-time video, but these days the built-in encoders can push video over USB2 no problem.

For a cheaper device, there's the ExtremeCap U3 which can do 60 FPS and negligible lag, but you're limited to stereo sound.

Unfortunately, when you want 1080p/60 with multichannel sound, afaik, there are no consumer level devices. You'll need to be willing to spend $1000 or more. And when 4k comes, it will get even higher. Unfortunately, USB3 won't be able to handle 4k, so you'd need an internal PCI card. (And hard disks themselves aren't fast enough to capture uncompressed 1080p without working in tandem).
