Hi! I'm a medical student with RA, diagnosed 10 years ago when I was in high school. The experience of a flare and getting this diagnosis is such a pain in the ass (the literal, figurative, and emotional asses) if we're being quite frank. When I was diagnosed and then later on when I had a rough, persistent flare, the emotional burden was pretty heavy. There was a lot of crying, a lot of anger (at God, my genetics, my immune system, etc.), and a lot of stubborn refusal to utilize or even ask for things that could've made my life a bit easier. You've already taken that step by posting here, so that's one down! This sub and finding peers who either are going through similar things (there were a surprising number of women with autoimmune disorders in my class) or were just good, understanding people made a huge difference for me. If you're comfortable talking about your experience to others, I think might be surprised at how many people know the struggle.

Physical things that I did find helpful:

• Grippy rubber sheets to help open jars without requiring hulk-like grip strength (rubber bands around lids also work in a pinch). I got mine from my PT but it's similar to these.

• BIG pencil/pen grips are a godsend for achy hands
  
• Very cushy tennis shoes. My first pair were Brooks motion control shoes and they made me feel like I was walking on a cloud. You may not want/need that much cushion... it's a lot.
  
• If you can manage it at your practice and if typing/writing notes is more of a challenge these days, see if you can get a medical scribe to help you out there.
  
  Being comfortable talking to people about it might take time, but you'll definitely get there soon. You're a doctor! You've had to learn how to talk to people about all sorts of uncomfortable things, so you can absolutely do this. Remember that although you have this diagnosis, you did nothing to "earn" it and therefore theoretically there's nothing to be embarrassed about. I know it's easier said than done. Try starting with people you know and trust- close friends, family- and then branch out as you're comfortable. I honestly make jokes about my "crap joints" and how "my body is rejecting me" quite often, and I find that the self-deprecating approach works well for breaking tension while talking to others about my RA.
  
  Finally, it might feel like you're going stir crazy in your own body because doing anything physical is just a recipe for pain right now, but it will get better and you will get back to being active. "Normal" might not be the same as it once was, but you'll re-define it for yourself and your illness. You've just now been diagnosed, so your journey to finding the treatment plan that will work for you is just beginning. I'm sure you know these meds take time to reach their peak effect, so be patient (again, easier said than done, I know) and keep an open dialogue with your rheumatologist about how things are progressing. Be as active as you can stand without hurting yourself, even if it's just walking. Hopefully MTX will fix you right up in no time and you'll be back to doing all of the activities lickity split!

lincthesink had some good comments, here's what I'd like to add on to them:

1 - You shouldn't really be depending solely on your LCD monitor to judge exposure of the scene. So many factors are in play here (the light hitting the monitor itself, the general light conditions of the scene, etc.) and can cause the apparent exposure on the LCD screen to vary. What you should be doing is base your exposure judgements on a histogram or waveform display that should be overlaid on top of your screen. You can then check if anything is "clipping" in the scene (peaks going beyond the right or left extremes) and adjust accordingly. I believe the 60D has this feature natively, but you should download the Magic Lantern firmware for your camera anyway. It has tons of videography tools that are of great help - you can customize your waveform display settings, you can turn on "zebras" (which highlight underexposed/overexposed areas in the way lincthesink is talking about), you can turn on focus peaking, and much more.

2 - I haven't had much experience with this problem firsthand, but my guess would be that your actors/scenes are on a different plane than where the tripod is set up, so even though your camera's "levels" are accurate for the tripod plane, the plane your actors are on might be crooked. This is a fairly simple fix in post-production though, at the cost of some video quality (rotate the image and zoom in as necessary).

3 - Nailing focus is one of the most difficult things about shooting on DSLR, especially if you're going for that cinematic shallow depth of field look. If you preset your focus with the digital zoom and you shoot on a tripod, the image will always remain in sharp focus as long as there is no movement in the scene. Because I'm guessing most of your scenes contain movement (otherwise, it would be a boring film!), you often need to compensate for the movement by adjusting focus during the shoot - this is called "pulling focus" and is such a difficult job that it is a highly paid role all by itself on a full film set.

On DSLRs, you can maximize the chances that your shot will be in focus by: 1) stopping down the aperture. The smaller the aperture, the greater the amount of the scene that will be in focus. This is often the most practical solution to solving focus issues, but it requires that you have a lot of light to shine on the scene (to make up for the loss of light entering the lens). 2) using a wide-angle lens. The smaller the focal length, the greater the amount of the scene that will be in focus. This is why GoPro footage usually always has all of the scene in sharp focus - their fisheye lens combined with a narrow aperture ensures that everything will be in focus. 3) pulling focus during the shot. This is the solution that most filmmakers tend to use, as oftentimes you will want to use a close-up lens with a wide open aperture for artistic effects, or because there's not enough light in the scene to justify stopping down. However, physically putting your hand on the focus ring and turning it to adjust the focus tends to shake the camera too much and is generally not ideal. Thus, it's best to invest in a "follow focus", which is basically a gear that attaches to the focus ring that allows for external control of the focus (typically by a knob). You can get simple ones for as cheap as $3.50, but the more "legit" ones typically start at around $50.

I could write a whole other post just about the process of pulling focus, but there are basically two ways to do it: by eye, or by pre-marking the scene. If you want to pull focus by eye, I'd suggest investing in an external monitor for your DSLR or at the very least a viewfinder extender. This will allow you to see the image and judge focus much more clearly. You'll want to turn on focus peaking in Magic Lantern, which will highlight the in-focus areas with brightly colored dots. Then, as the scene progresses, you can adjust the focus nearer or farther away as your subjects move. This method is very hit-and-miss, but if you take time to develop this skill you will eventually get better at it. The second method is to first "block" your scene - have all your subjects move to where they will be moving, practice all the camera movements, etc. At certain points in the scene you will use a tape measure (or other distance measuring device) to measure the distance between the subject and your lens and write it down, making a marking on your lens or follow focus device so you know where to turn to at that point. When all this is done, during the actual shoot, you'll rely on these focus markings and measurements to operate the focus rather than looking at the scene. This has the potential to be much more spot-on than just doing it by eye, but it requires a lot more prep work and is typically a stand-alone job apart from the main camera operator (as it's difficult to move a camera and operate a follow focus at the same time!)

  Freezing things is a great idea. He could still help you prepare and cook the things, and still have options if he doesn't have energy to cook sometimes. Lots of people do this, hence the sub /r/MealPrepSunday :P
  
  Maybe consider a crockpot (/r/slowcooking)? Might be good for a beginner, and the recipes usually don't require a ton of work.
  
  This likely won't be an option now, or ever, but if it comes up: a powerchair with an elevate feature is amazing. I mostly use this feature in the kitchen and am honestly unsure how I'd manage without it. (I'm probably overall weaker than your brother, but I can stand for a little bit, too. "A little bit" doesn't really cut it while cooking, IME.)
  
  One site that's great for beginners, I think, is Budget Bytes. They provide step-by-step pictures for most/all recipes, and, obviously, aim for affordable dishes.
  
  EDIT: Toaster ovens are amazing and so much easier than a regular oven.

So, here are some really practical things I like to do as gifts, because they're things people don't really think about, but when you don't have them... so annoying!

• Flexible Jar Openers No need for a man with one of these. Seriously, it can't get you off, but it can open any f'ing jar you will ever need to open.

• Cast Iron Skillet Great for stove top or in the oven
  
• A few plastic condiment bottles. I like to buy the large jugs of oil (olive and sunflower) and pour them into these bottles to use. Way easier and it's cheap. Also good for storing dish soap if you buy the large, bulk size, or hand soap.
  
• Various cleaning supplies and soaps (sponges, scrubbers, gallon size bucket (to store cleaners and to use when cleaning), dust pan, broom, toothbrush)
  
• some other things you always forget about when moving (can opener, zip lock bags, aluminum foil, sharpie marker, surge protector, scissors, rubber bands)
  
  Add a bottle of wine, cuz the rest of this shit is boring af.

I think you're talking about follow focus? And if you are trying to follow focus with a kit lens (probably the 18-55mm or something similar?) it's definitely tricky to do that. Back when all I had was a kit lens, my friend turned me onto these little jar openers to wrap around the lens. The slight resistance makes it much easier to change focus manually.

I do recommend buying some better glass and a decent tripod. Even Canon's 50mm is only about $100 and it looks great as a beginner lens.

I find it to be easier but it may not work with all bottle types. I'm glad I was able to help in some way. ETA: Oh, and for standing, I don't have shoe recommendations, but I know that some restaurants will get thick padded mats for employees who have foot issues, to make standing at a station for a long period easier. Maybe get a couple for in front of the stove/sink/her preferred work area?

My (tiny, small-handed) mother had this great device for opening jars. It was just a pair of rails at a slight angle to each other \ / that mounted on the underside of a cabinet. The rails had rubber on the interior. To open a jar, you slid the jar into the rails until its stopping point (it accommodated all lid sizes) and then used the strength of both arms to turn the jar, leaving the lid behind. Arm strength >> hand strength (and ingenuity > brawn).

EDIT: it looked something like this. This is not a plug; I suggest search terms "under the cabinet jar opener," or just to build one yourselves.

A wine stopper or something else with a taper, maybe a plastic funnel, and a rubber bottle opener like this, or maybe a cork, comes to mind. Or you can use pliers and the rubber bottle opener to grip the inside by opening the pliers and slowly turn it while pulling. Good luck!

Ugh, hand-crank can openers. I was so happy when the soup companies started putting the easy-pull tabs on their can lids.

My partner had an awesome low-tech contraption at the last place we lived: a wedge-shaped can opener mounted on the bottom of the cabinet. You just pushed the can lid into the wedge and rotated. Fucking brilliant.

True, the trick on the lock ring is to make sure that you never tighten it more than "slightly snug." And that also goes for when putting on the catch jar because you can accidentally tighten the bottom ring without meaning to.

That said, it is very easy to over-tighten the lock ring if you are not paying attention. I've only done it a few times in 3 years, but the first time it was so damn tight I ordered two of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BKZUJK , one for each ring.

It was the only way I could get it to loosen up. I have strong hands, but could no matter how hard I gripped and twisted, it wasn't enough. I needed both wrenches.

I have one like this. I've seen them at walmart for around 4$. It will open large jars and small water bottle caps. You don't have to grip both handles as you open. I've found out you can just grab one handle and twist if it fits snugly enough to the lid.

In my city, there is a surprising number of young women who leave their doors or windows unlocked and have had a guy nicknamed the 'sleep watcher' enter their house/apartment. As obvious as this sounds, my recommendation is to lock your doors and windows. Also consider a silicone jar opener for all your pickle needs.

You probably tightened it down too much. It only needs to be snug, not torqued down.

In a pinch, you could use a wrench with a towel wrapped around it to protect the finish on the mod, but there's still a risk of slipping and scratching it up.

I’ve done it before with one of those rubber can lid grip things and a pair of pliers to hold and twist. It might not be perfect but t worked without breaking the glass anymore

We call this my boyfriend replacer. Fair warning, though: It is super noisy.

Get a jar key. It pops the seal so you can just unscrew the lid without having to deal with that initial struggle.

Get a silicone opener like one of these and they'll turn no problems.
