That's going to be some nice dank herb, brother. Nice work! Some bud never stops throwing pistils. Genetics and environment both play a factor. To my eyes, yours looks like bud at around F56 that needs to go to F70-F80. This 40x loupe from Amazon is the best inexpensive magnifier that I know of. As others said, you really need to look at the trichs to get an accurate read on ripeness.

Get a good mineral/rock ID book (I suggest buying this one ahead of time).

You will probably have really good mineral specimens in lab so you won't need a hand lens just yet, but you should buy one anyway (I suggest this one).

When the semester starts, spend a lot of time in lab alone looking at the minerals and memorizing a few key characteristics (name, formula, crystal habit, hardness, streak) of each one. Seriously, get used to being in there on the weekend, bring a beer (brown bag it). If you are good at identifying minerals in hand specimen, it will help out tremendously when you get into Petrology and out in the field. Don't rely on your instructor alone, look around for mineralogy websites from other universities. I found this series of lectures by Doug Haywick to be helpful.

First I'd suggest getting a loupue, or a reappy good magnifying glass..
http://www.amazon.com/Collectors-Professional-Magnifying-Loupe-Optical/dp/B005GX0FSS

The quarters are worth their silver content, but go through them and check for key dates and errors, of course.

Silver dollars from the 70s are worth $1. They have no silver in them. They are just funny money
Walkers, again, are worth a small bit above silver spot, but again look for errors and key dates. Same with the frankers.
Kennedy halves that are from 1971 and later are NOT silver and are just worth face value.

The 1995 pieces are silver eagles. They have almost zero numismatic value unless they are key dates, and are 99.9% silver, worth spot

Mercs, again check for keys and errors

Jefferson nickles are worth face value, unless they are war nickles, and have a P S or D on the back of them. Those are the only ones that are silver

I would suggest you go through ALL of them carefully. If they are in 2x2s (the cardboard holders), don't take them out. They were put in there for a reason.

I know I'm going to get hated here, but the vast majority of what you have is "junk silver". EG, silver coins that are just worth their weight.

Though, I say to go through them because you MIGHT have something worth a lot more than the silver content. That is always better. Not to mention sentimental value.

Just bought one of these mini microscopes and it is absolutely amazing. Has 2 light settings, either UV or LED and has 60X magnification. Super cheap too.

i bought one of these 2 years ago for like ~$2. works perfect, can clearly see the blue layer. 30x magnification minimum is what i would suggest.

Ok she's going to need a rock hammer. I recommend an estwing like this: https://www.amazon.com/Estwing-E3-22P-Pointed-Shock-Reduction/dp/B0002OVCMO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1500498067&sr=8-2&keywords=rock+hammer

hand lens (not a magnifying glass)! Every geo has one: https://www.amazon.com/Magnifier-Triplet-Illuminating-Magnifying-Jeweler/dp/B00KAPBYNC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500498120&sr=8-1&keywords=hand+lens

Journal/composition book for her to take notes and catalog her findings

Other things to think about: geology summer camp, local rockhounding groups/clubs, identification book, mineral ID kit, vest with lots of pockets, boxes for the rocks to be stored in, and good boots.

This loupe is super affordable and honestly I’m a huge fan, don’t have any issues seeing tric’s with her. I’ve heard this slightly higher priced loupe ($16 usd) is a bit better but I really don’t mind my cheaper loupe one bit!

u/LeeSalt · 2 pointsr/mtgfinance

I highly recommend this one-piece style of loupe for cards: https://www.amazon.com/Fancii-Illuminated-Jewelers-Magnifier-Triplet/dp/B015VGEBS4

You just set it on top of the card and look, you don't have to hold anything or adjust the distance, it's already pre-calibrated and the light works better than the fold out or pop out kinds of loupes.

With a Jeweler's Loupe

Source for interested parties: Amazon.com for about $15

Thanks! I'll be sure to keep it up then. I used this little bad boy that I bought here. It's as easy as placing your phone camera onto the lens and taking the picture.

u/crispy48867 · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Was a rare coin collector from the early 60's through the 80's. always used a Tripplet. they are rugged and dependable. At a 30x power, they blow things up well enough and also give you a feild of view that is wide enough to be of good use. I've had this one since 1976. It's exactly the same today as it was then...

Please invest 3-5 bucks in a jewels loop with 60x
https://www.amazon.com/Magnifying-Loupe-Jewelry-Magnifier-Jeweler/dp/B0137997H2
Something like that.
Shame to cut them before time.
Also you can wait until the fan leafs are dying / discolored.

u/Graceful_cumartist · 2 pointsr/vinyl

No one can tell it from those photos, you need something like this and take a look yourself. While at it, might wanna order a digital stylus cauge for like 10 bucks also.

These cheap "jeweler's loupes" on amazon do the trick usually. They claim up to 60x or something, I don't really believe that, but they work. You really don't need much.

I have one like this https://www.amazon.com/Bluedot-Trading-jewelers-loop-60x-Jewelers-Magnification/dp/B00MMP6YJW/ref=zg_bs_8090802011_34/131-9874862-0971406?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=KZZ0NZVTM7TRMRNBQ9E2 (mine has some different brand but they're from the same factory anyway I'm sure) but I've seen various others from just searching "jewelers loupe" on amazon used and they all worked fine.
With how cheap they are it's also no big risk.

This one seems good but I'm not sure if the blacklight is strong/large enough. I want to illuminate a whole card. Also it seems bulky / awkward to use.

also I am not sure if 60x zoom is too much or not

I wanted to ask for advice in a store in person
