>Does the Ledger S display it's screen how much coins I own?

no, not on the nano s itself , but ledger live does in fiat and BTC and keeps track of the txs

>Is Ledger live required to manage coins inside the S?

You can use ledger with other wallets as well like :

electrum

https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161925-Set-up-and-use-Electrum

Blockstream green

https://docs.blockstream.com/green/troubleshooting-advanced/troubleshooting-advanced-index.html#hardware-wallets

>I'm concerned about using Ledger Live is because isn't the whole point of using cold wallet is to keep it offline as much as possible?

Hardware wallets are not cold wallets or cold storage but hot wallets that keep all the private keys within the hardware (nanoS) and all the tx signing and validation occurs within the hardware wallet. It is safe using a trezor or ledger on infected computers as long as you verify the address

> So does Ledger Live stores information that are susceptible to hacking?

None of the private keys or backup are stored on your computer or on ledger live. This is one of the main purposes of a hardware wallet, you can transact even if your computer is compromised.

>Please advise on things I need to watch out for when operate the ledger hardware and software.

IMHO you should first focus on getting a hardware wallet trezor or ledger and :

  1. Consider more secure means of backing up your BIP39 backups in case of floods or fire - https://cryptosteel.com/
    Or https://billfodl.com/products/the-one-and-only-billfodl
    or https://bitkee.com/ or https://cryptokeystack.com/
or https://www.amazon.com/Vector-Number-Capital-Letter-Punch/dp/B01A1CTYG2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1521669827&sr=8-5&keywords=punch+tool+set+letter Use steel , brass, or copper or other durable metals. Wood and aluminum are unacceptable.

  2. Keeping that backup safe and private

  3. Use a passphrase with the hardware wallet (most the security concerns with HW wallets are solved with a passphrase.)
    https://wiki.trezor.io/Passphrase
    https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005214529-Advanced-passphrase-security

Make sure the passphrase is also written down somewhere private so you do not forget it!

  4. Buy your hardware wallet directly from the producer or amazon site under the producers name. Verify the integrity of the hardware wallet if you are extra paranoid :

  5. Never brag about your wealth to others

  6. Never invest in any investment scheme or get greedy thinking you can quickly increase the amount of Bitcoin you have with daytrading

  7. Setup your hardware wallet , transfer a small amount of btc to it, wipe it clean , and restore it to give you confidence that the backup was done right and give you experience in the recovery process.

  8. Keep your Mnemonic 12 or 24 word seed secret and private and show to no one. Never use premade 12-24 word backups , you create new keys and backups upon setup.

  9. Lastly Never store your bitcoins in a web wallet or exchange . You own 0 bitcoins if you do not control your private keys.

> What do you think? does it make any sense? How would you mark the links? (pinching, denting, twisting, etc...)

Sounds like a fun project, but there are easier and more convenient ways to have a seed stored in a durable medium like metal. Punch letters and a steel-plate would do the job much easier.

I would use twisting. Pinching or denting is something that might happen too easily unintended. Whatever the designated characteristic between 1 and 0 is, you want it to be as deliberate as possible.

That’s what I have... it’s really hard to engrave. It’s makes it indestructible but hard to stamp. I wouldn’t recommend.

I think I’m going to get this to replace it if I can’t get it engraved well. CryptoCurrency https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CLMK3WJ

If I end up with enough value stored in those words I’ll get a safe deposit box or a permanent safe to store it in.

Amazon, you can get hearts, stars, peace signs, pretty much anything you can imagine.

I have a hardware wallet and these price increases are making me nervous so I just bought:

[Number and Letter Stamp Set (36 PIECE PUNCH SET / A-Z & 0-9) Industrial Grade Hardened Carbon Steel Metal - 1/8" (3mm) Characters - Perfect for Imprinting Metal, Wood, Plastic, Leather, & More!]

and

Online Metal Supply 304 Stainless Steel Sheet (26 ga.) .018" x 12" x 12" - 2B Finish

I'm hoping the stainless steel sheet isn't too hard for the stamp set to mark.

Once I get my backup seed stamped on the stainless steel though - I have to find a good hiding spot.

I've decided against a safe because as others have mentioned a safe just says 'Steal me please'.

I've decided against a safe deposit box at the bank because - well this is bitcoin and that just seems wrong.

[edit] links and stuffs

[edit2] also thinking of covering the stamped sheet in something like hard clay (have to break the clay to make the seed visible)

u/barnacledoor · 1 pointr/cubscouts

I'll have to find out about getting a Square. I'm sure that'll help a lot.

I'm thinking of getting these bracelets and using fishing line to attach these tags. I'll print out a little $100 club or whatever ($150?) and glue it on the tag. I'm considering putting something like these clear stickers over it as well to protect it a bit. I'm not sure though as the major complaint about those stickers is that they don't stick on for long.

u/chahoua · 1 pointr/Monero

All you need to keep safe is your seed. If your computer crashes you can always restore your wallet only using your seed.

Preferably don't store it online but on paper in a safe or stamp it onto a piece of stainless steel using something like this.

u/the_duck17 · 3 pointsr/CAguns

If you care more to be compliant than to win any beauty contests, pick up a set of punches for $20 and do it yourself.

Probably can go one size smaller on the punch size but you might come in a smidge too small.

Or wait until a gun show and there should be a laser engraver you can have do the job on the spot, takes like 10 mins. Or try a paintball shop, they have laser engraving too, trophy shops as well.

u/razerzej · 2 pointsr/DungeonsAndDragons

Yeah, I just found that out a little bit ago. Used twist-offs might work okay, but flattened bottlcaps that had been popped with an opener look like... flattened bottlecaps.

Pre-flattened caps or stamping blanks would be a more expensive but labor-saving option (or one could just go full spendy and buy pre-made fantasy coins). Whatever I go with, I owe you for the inspiration!

u/moontrainpassenger · 1 pointr/ethtrader

You can buy your own engraver. Or dremel tool with engraver bit. But best (and cheapest) is the letter punch set, like this https://www.amazon.com/Vector-Number-Capital-Letter-Punch/dp/B01A1CTYG2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1504064933&sr=8-3&keywords=letter+punch+set

Will take about half an hour to do 24 words. I've tried it on stainless steel plate (slightly more difficult) and on aluminium plate (much easier, because allu is softer). But alluminium has much lower melting point. Decisions, decisions :)))

u/abolish_karma · 1 pointr/dogecoin

http://www.amazon.com/Piece-Letter-Number-Punch-Stamping/dp/B00315F93O <-- this + 3 strips of stainless steel.

I'd love to see a piece of metal shaped like a bone, for nature - based cold Storage. (Back yard, remote mountaintop or deserted island depending on the amount stored)

u/AnagramGuy · 5 pointsr/diypedals

Thanks! Took a couple tries. I used a similar set to this one: Letter Punches

And then I fill the letters with black paint and buff the surface.

This was the inspiration:

I would say 1/16" might be a bit small, although I'm sure you could get by with that size. It might be a little difficult to read. The size I use the most is 3mm which is just under 1/8". That is still small but easily readable. You might want to find or make a chisel about the same width as the date is long, (4 numerals) and stamp each pendant with a chisel line to register the digits on...keeping them straight. It doesn't have to be deep, just enough for you to see while the metal is hot.

Edit: I assume that you are in the U.S. (Burning Man) and here is a 3mm number set that is cheaper that the ones you described:

https://www.amazon.com/Beadsmith-Piece-Gothic-Numbers-Metal/dp/B009L10ZJK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483231827&sr=8-2&keywords=metal+number+stamps

u/p3t3or · 2 pointsr/GiftIdeas

I once used a lot of moleskines. I'm assuming the person is familiar with and possible has them. I got something like this for myself in the past to create titles / labels on them:

https://www.amazon.com/Piece-Capital-Alphabet-Letters-Stamping/dp/B002ZJ520C

You'll need a tiny hammer to to help stamp into the leather.

u/Azlas · 1 pointr/Entrepreneur

Laser would be nice.

A sticker would be fast.

This would be, good. But you have to find someone who will make one of these with your logo on the bottom end.

u/ryanthesoup · 1 pointr/polymer80

I bought a metal stamping set, like this. But I didn't have anything to fully support the guide rod channel while I was doing it, so it looks like straight up shit. If I were to do it again I'd either take it to an engraver or buy an engraver tool.

u/dannown · 2 pointsr/korea

well, amazon sells them, but it's a lot cheaper to get them from a Chinese grocery store like Ranch 99.

u/VetteRacer · 3 pointsr/EDC

First, congrats!

Second, could use metal stamps to add to it. Use the / to cross out previous year and punch the new one.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KW483B5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iSrKDb6FCYKN1

u/myusernameranoutofsp · 1 pointr/Bitcoin

I think that using this and a plate of metal is a better and cheaper form of cold storage.

u/Lampwick · 1 pointr/CAguns

better off buying just a cheap set of 1/16" stamps off Amazon

u/Valkreus · 1 pointr/sffpc

Hey Frank!
I recently got a Steck and tried out the mod. Like you said, finding details and pictures of this mod was nearly impossible. Here's an album walking through the steps of it

And here's a link to the metal pieces that can be used

By metal stamps, is it possible you mean "letter punches"?

If you find yourself some wooden coat racks... you can get yourself some metal stamps. Princess Auto has a sale this week and I picked some up... https://www.amazon.com/Number-Letter-Industrial-Hardened-Carbon/dp/B06XCZ3TDG/
