My friend has one and I've only seen it in action when he has a bunch of people over, but it's usually randomly opening when people walk by, or not opening when you want it to. Plus, it takes like a second to open, so you have to stand there and wait, which isn't cool if you're chopping a bunch of stuff and need to keep throwing it in.

I'd definitely go for the foot pedal, something like this if you're looking for a nice combo can.

I know this sounds kind of crazy, but I've been giving these trash cans to friends who cook. They absolutely love it. Nobody wants to spend money on a semi-fancy motion-detecting trash can, but it is extremely handy in the kitchen. http://www.amazon.com/Nine-Stars-Touchless-Automatic-Motion/dp/B0031M9H3A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369956673&sr=8-1&keywords=trash+can

Your trash is always locked(no smell) and you don't need to touch anything to add more trash into the bin. You don't need to push a pedal or anything like that.
I'm talking about things like that

But I understand you reaction. I was buying it as a toy but now recommend it to everyone to try. It's awesome

I use a 10 gallon trash can with a lid and a wet bag trash liner - original for diapers, now I use them in the bathroom for towels and wash cloths, SO much better than dirty wash cloths piling up!!

Sure. This is the one I have from Simple Human as others mentioned. The lock is pretty secure and my gremlins can’t get in once it’s locked.

We got a bin that hangs on the kitchen cabinet door for compost that fits the standard 3 gallon "bio bags" perfectly: http://www.amazon.com/simplehuman-In-Cabinet-Trash-Heavy-Duty-2-6-Gal/dp/B00DMMW22W

It comes out easily for transport to bin outside (because you cannot carry the bio bags themselves).

I agree! I live in an apartment and don't have a garden. What can I do after the compost has formed?

Is this good enough to compost in or is it too small?

Polypropylene (PP) no. 5 -- I did some research on it and it seems to be a safe option. I found an article saying it was okay. But I think my best bet would be to research the actual containers I am using so I can get more relevant information.

I use diaper pail liners in all my small garbage cans. They're washable, durable, and attractive. I got mine from Amazon but you could find a similar from another source if you dont want to support them.

I just wash sort as I go. [Something like this might be useful to you] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000QJEW9K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1CCpxbZ74H64V)

If you have a dishwasher you can use it to wash your containers as long as you don't heat dry.

I assume you are in a more rural area that doesn't yet have single stream recycling? All of the automation you are talking about exist at Material Recovery Facilities that take in mixed recycling. Those machines are really big and expensive though.

I use a setup based off of this one. You can order a "starter pack" worms online (red wrigglers... not earthworms). I also have something along the lines of this for temporary holding of vegetable scraps in the kitchen. I transfer it to the bins (in the basement) about once a week.

Oh, and if you have access to shredded corrugated cardboard, it's about the best food in the world for worms.

This is the can we use, with a kissaluv liner(2, cycled while being washed). We already owned the can, so we just repurposed it for diaps. Works great.

The automatic lid isn’t necessary, but it is hands down my sons favorite feature of anything in our house.

u/Darklyte · 1 pointr/smarthome

Well, that's better than my mom's $200 SimpleHuman trashcan

u/seriouslyneedaname · 1 pointr/ZeroWaste

Maybe something like this would do? The metal "garbage can" type containers come in different sizes.

u/Sketchin69 · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

You ferment in something like this?

u/istroll · 3 pointsr/pics

Go buy one yourself?

You can get an outdoor weatherproof ashtray for somewhere around $50. Probably easier than trying to get your company to do it and less than a carton of smokes in most places.

u/FennecRua · 2 pointsr/u_PrurientPutti

I use something similar to this for my disposables (different simplehuman model but you get the idea).

They make their own bags for them, but in a pinch you can usually use a large kitchen bag. However, their bags are a lot tougher, and hold odor a lot better, which is why I use them.

On the rare occasions that I need my cloth diapers, I just toss em straight in the laundry. :p

Edit: Link fail!

u/spockspeare · 5 pointsr/DIY

Dual can sounds big. Also, if I ever replace my venerable Rubbermaid foot-operated can, it's going to be a self-opener. I think one of those would fit where the one in the pictures is.

But then again...

u/far2frail · 1 pointr/cats

I got one of these in-cabinet trashcans specifically so that I wouldn't have to worry about my cats eating floss, Q-tips, etc.

Here's the trash can: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VXULPTQ/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I1S3267DQM9WT1&colid=1FPGUY6DLRU91&th=1

We're considering it because our other recycling center thing is getting to be too small and cumbersome. It's a neat trash can/recycling can. I just hate, hate that she bought it and now makes me question if we should get it. With her setup, she could have gotten a bigger recycling bin instead of the combined one. We have less open room and that's the dual one makes sense for us under our kitchen island. She could have been a massive recycler and gotten a much bigger one and then a regular trash can.
