• I found this Soma wirefree bra and now I wear nothing else unless it's a special occasion. I even fall asleep wearing these, they are so comfortable.
  
  
• I live in Old Navy vintage tees when I'm at home. I'm kind of an expert in pjs and these tops are the best. Super soft, don't shrink when dried on medium, and nice enough to throw a bra on and run errands in. The lighter colors can be sheer.
  
  
• For plain regular t-shirts, I love the GAP favorites line in short-sleeve scoopneck, long-sleeve v-neck, and long-sleeve crew-neck. These shirts are nice and thick and also don't shrink when dried on medium.
  
  
• I love the Bath and Body Works shea-infused socks. I buy a couple of pairs each year, and they keep my feet so warm while providing a little traction on the wooden floors. On really cold days I will wear them with my boots. I wash them with my regular clothes. While the stickies on the bottom will peel off eventually, none of them have gotten to the point that I decided to toss them, and I think I have been buying them for four years? During the winter holidays is usually when they have the best selection, usually with cute little animals!
  
  
• Let's talk underwear. Almost every day, I wear 100% cotton Hanes bikinis. Sometimes I'll go crazy and wear a boyshort. But 100% cotton, always and forever.
  
  
• For fancy/no-panty-line occasions, there's only one answer - the Hanky Panky retro lace thong. Expensive, yes. Worth it? Totally. The thong part is very comfortable, doesn't dig in the front OR back, and the best part is that the high rise of the stretch lace smooths out that little pooch I have in front. It doesn't creep, doesn't bunch, and sits well under tights, skirts, and dresses.
  
  
• The Hanes Solutions Super Opaque Tight in Maximum Blackout Coverage is the best black tight I've found. It's the tight I wear in most of my fits, and while there is a little shine, there is no show-through at all.
  
  
• I am a firm believer in the 'leggings are not pants, cover your butt' school of thought, so I have this high-low hem shirt and this tunic, both in black, to go with my collection of printed leggings. They are both loose-fit and drape very nicely.
  
  
• While buying multiples of clothing isn't unusual for me, there's only one time I bought multiples of boots. I have the Franco Sarto Trooper boot in black, gray, and claret, a dark reddish-brown. The boots are so comfortable and sleek-looking. They go with everything, and the elastic in the back ensures a perfect fit for wider calves. They even have a wide-calf version, although my calves are 17' around and I could still wear the regular size.
  
  
• As far as regular shoes go, I think we all know I'm a big fan of the Vans slip-on.
  
  

I've been looking at leather bags and the Kate Spade Jackson Street Quincy hobo looks nice (https://www.katespade.com/products/jackson-street-quincy/PXRU9421.html) though it costs close to $280 tax included. I prefer pink but it goes with less outfits. If the leather is as dark as in their site as opposed to Nordstrom's where it the lighting makes it look like dark grey, I like the dark leather contrasted by the gold lettering and zipper. There seems to be conflicting opinions on how Kate Spade purses are these days and it's more confusing with the recent acquisition of Kate Spade. Nicole Glass said she's looking to improve the quality of the leather, and I'm assuming that means the 2019 stuff is supposed to be better? The main bag I like in 2019 collection is Margaux Satchel (https://www.katespade.com/products/margaux-medium-satchel/PXRUA161.html) though it looks more plain. I do like the look of the inside more on this one. I prefer the aesthetic of Kate Spade things, even if people tend to say Coach has better quality leather.

Anyone know any other brand that has an aesthetic like Kate Spade? I know of Liebeskind, but their designs tend to be too plain for me. Madewell's tote is well known but I'm not really looking for a tote. I'd like to be able to fit Time magazine rolled up (10.5 in length) if I have to go to the DMV or something, but I'm not carrying laptops and groceries in it. Really prefer to keep things below $500, ideally $300. I'm going to go to a Kate Spade store next week to see how the leather feels to my hand.

I'm making mine! I'm going to be Lagertha, SO is going to be Ragnar. My throw-together costume isn't going to be show-exact, but I'm pretty sure my group of friends will know exactly who I'm playing.


After shopping around online, actual Vikings costumes run a damn pretty penny - and I only have ugly ones. So, I'm improvising.

This corset and this bolero are my choices for replicating Legertha's tunic-type shirt/sleeves and her armor/vest. Bracers I'm still working on, but I might end up making them myself. I might find a tunic or large brown/tan t shirt and chop/adjust it accordingly to have the bottom coming out of the corset to mimic the tunic since I've not been able to find a good actual tunic top that I like.

These boots were too adorable to pass up, and then I have brown leggings as well.

My company that I work for receives supplies on pallets, so I'm getting one or two to break down and fix into a shield. Painted, of course. Throw a few brown belts on my waist, though the corset that I'm buying actually has sufficient buckling.

And then there is her sword and sheath, which I'm still pondering.

Finished up, of course, with youtube tutorials on Lagertha's hair style. I like that one just because it's easy for someone who doesn't do a lot with her hair very often. I think I can manage this one.


As far as for my SO and being Ragnar ... that's a whole different ballgame that I will be sorting out and figuring out on what to do starting this weekend!

Thicker tights last longer in my experience. Also putting them on the right way helps too. Gathering it all up at the toe and pulling it up your leg instead of putting them on like pants. I also make sure to take of my rings before putting them on and use the pads of my fingers and avoid the nails. This all sounds more complicated than it actually it. Just little things I've learned from tearing way to many pairs of tights. It's worth it to invest in a pair of thick, spanx brand tights. My pair of spanx tights have lasted 2 years. It's incredible. My sister even got a pair thats reversible, grey on one side and black on the other. Crazy awesome. I try to pick up a pair if I see a good deal or a cool pattern whenever I'm shopping. I've lost good tights, but I try to keep rotating them enough that I'm never too crushed when an awesome pair gets a run. J Crew and Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters all tend to have sales at the end of each "season" and I usually swipe a couple pairs half price or off.

I'll see if I can find the boots. I bought them on amazon a couple years ago. I couldn't find my boots but these ones are all similar. Mine were just super cheap, and I don't use rainboots super often so it worked out pretty well. But these styles are what I was talking about.

They are rainboots that don't look like the typical hunter boot, or bright yellow wellies.

Combat boots and riding boots are very in style. (Also, don't worry, under $100/75 is plenty, you'll definitely be able to find one, two or three boots with that.)

If you want a pair of black boots, I'd go with the combat ones you linked. Or, if you really wanna go for comfort and splurge a little bit, Doc Martens are freaking amazing and will last absolutely forever (assuming you take good care of them).

Personally, I own these and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made! After breaking them in, you will never want to take them off. They're also a little out of the ordinary and stand out, especially in North America.

Riding boots are really nice too. They're so versatile and can go with practically any outfit. I really like this one:

My last piece of advice would be to hit up your local thrift or vintage store. Not only do you sometimes find fantastic deals on shoes that have been barely worn, you can also sometimes find some inspiration.

How dressy is your office? Business, business casual, or casual? Mine is business casual and we take the casual pretty seriously if we aren't meeting with clients. I wear riding style boots to work with skinny black pants quite often. I think that any leather (or fake leather) boots that are pretty classic in terms of style are appropriate for the office! Suede is fine, too, but just tends to get messed up by snow and once that happens, they're too junky looking for work - so you have to be careful how much you wear them.

To be more specific, the main boots that I wear look like these but are actually Ralph Lauren and from TJ Maxx, they cost about $100.
I also have these which are a bit more casual but still work if you office isn't too strict. And these which I just got and love! I think the first and last ones are the most office appropriate, personally. The last ones would be cute even if they had a slightly higher heel. I buy a ton of shoes on Amazon because I have Prime and can return them for free if they don't fit :) It's a good place to shop around for the style you like even if you don't buy from there!

Honestly, this is something that really doesn't have an answer unless you start getting into mass-produced apparel.

Sizing shoes in general is really difficult to do because of how different our feet are. My experience with small batch leather boots for an outfit of around 250 fighters all using the same kind yielded very different results; some needed the extra half size up and some didn't and claimed the fit was already on the snug side. Others said they were far too loose.

I don't know what you're leatherworking experience is like, but boots are the hardest things to make by a substantial margin. Unless you're a professional cobbler, odds are you're going to get some things wrong on the first few attempts regardless. Even if using a template, all templates vary in how much spare room there might be inside the shoe.

My feet are personally quite flat in the sense that arch to ankle is only around 2.5 inches, so I'd probably be able to get away with it without changing the size.

I guess the best I can offer if you're going to make them is to make them at-size and buy some insoles that can be cut and see. What matters absolutely most in a pair of boots is good ankle support so your choice of pattern and leather thickness matters a lot here as well.

If you're not a cobbler or using a pattern I'd recommend staying away from making leather boots unless you have the money to burn doing it as a learning experience rather than expecting a final product to come out well on the first attempt. There's a reason most shops stay away from footwear, and those that do it don't do much else.

Generally, it's just best to buy something and layer over it. A number of fighters I know, including myself, use these and just cut the fringe off and they look great (wax is recommended). They've lasted me over a year and show very little signs of wear and tear, and the soles are only sketchy on very wet days:

This is the eternal question if you live in a big city and have to walk a lot - where to find comfortable, stylish shoes!

I've had some success with:

• Chie Mihara amazingly well made and comfortable, her husband is a podiatrist, but her styles can be a little OTT.
  
  
• Gentle Souls this skews more to frumpy but if you find a good style, the comfort level is amazing.
  
  
• Rockport Total Motion - this boot has become my winter fave, but it's a wedge, and the line overall can look a little clunky.
  
  I've also heard good things about Ecco shoes and Mephisto.
  

Enzo Angiolini Deanja boot goes up to size 11. They fit my 12.5" calves perfectly. They're super durable, so so comfy, and I get compliments nearly every time i wear them.


However!!! I have them in every color and I only recommend them in black. They're sleek and smooth and classy. On the brown and grey ones the leather is a different texture, and scuffs reveal white underneath because the boot color is, like, a veneer? Cheapy looking.

The black ones are a much nicer, smooth leather, and they have none of the scuffing problem. I beat the shit out of them last year, commuting by foot in Chicago's snow and salt with no maintenance besides the occasional wipedown with a wet paper towel, but surprisingly they're still in decent shape and I still get compliments when i wear them. I bought a second pair of black ones recently just because i'm afraid they'll be discontinued and i won't be able to find them again :)

IF YOU HAVE SLIMMISH CALVES BUY KAMIK RAIN BOOTS! The calf if about 15.5" on them (slimmer than a Hunter) and they're about half the weight and super sleek and beautiful. Plus they have the cushiest comfiest insoles ever. ...Oh, and they're like, half the price. I just bought the Jennifer and I'm super impressed. I read a lot of reviews prior to buying too of people saying they liked them way better than Hunters.

These lace-up Fryes! I don't need much in the way of warmth, since our climate is warm, but the adjustable lacing means I can fit wooly socks underneath them when the thermometer does dip.

My excellent husband-dude found them at an absurd Amazon discount last Cyber Monday, and I love them. They make me feel like Katniss.

You definitely can still rock jeans and look more mature :) Get yourself a pair of nice dark wash or black jeans, straight-leg. You can dress dark wash up or dress it down and it's always flattering.

How do you feel about heels? A low heel can really help to amp up a look. I also am really liking the look of oxfords and loafers lately for casual wear. Where do you live? Do you have a distinct winter season? You can't go wrong with a pair of good riding boots... lots of different styles to try on :)

As for the purse, I really like this one which is out of your budget right now, but it does it seem in line with the more alternative/gothic look you like? I'll hunt around for more in your price range :)

My calf measures 13" and they fit snugly. I managed to get them on sale at $140, making them the priciest pair of shoes I own, but considering how often I wear them I am happy with my splurge and think I will be for a few more years. Not really bottoms, but I've found a pair of knee-high boots always seems to even out my body and make me look longer and slimmer no matter what kind of pants I'm wearing under them- though I tend to favor skinny jeans since they fit under them more comfortably. I have a pair of loose-fit black skinny jeans from Macys and forest green Gap Corduroy skinny pants.

To go over them, I have a pair of Hush Puppies Alternative boots from Macys (most comfy shoes in the world- period), and these hot Miz Mooz boots. The Miz Mooz boots were on sale for 40% off when I got them on Amazon, and I get so many compliments on them!

I'm short (5'2"), but with this combination, I never feel too pear-y or stubby.

My Sam Edelman Penny boots ALWAYS get compliments! Very classic riding boot, so if that's not what you're looking for obviously I'm no help. But IMO they look more expensive than they are, and are pretty good quality considering they're actual leather.

Hunter boots. Everyone I talked to said, "Oh, they're so cute. . .but they leak sometimes. They're so great, though!" and I just thought it was ridiculous to buy rain boots that leak.

I bought these Kamik Jennifer boots instead and they're terrific. Low profile, solidly constructed, and super comfortable. I've walked miles in them at a time!

Personally the three classics for me:

Leather or suede booties with some kind of cut-out to help elongate the leg

Waterproof boots

Riding boots, especially brown ones

I'm not a fan personally of over the knee boots, and I prefer flat boots unless it's a block heel on an ankle boot, like this.

They don't feel any different from my Kamiks, except they're 3x more expensive and have those little white tags on the front.
