Glubot - it looks funny to a non woodworker, but it is an amazing thing to have around the shop. It makes glue ups about 100 times more enjoyable. Maybe get some silicone brushes to go with it.

Magnifying Lamp - a great addition to any shop. Be sure to get one with a long arm like this one so he can mount it behind his bench and still be able to use it.

Incra Rulers - these are the best damn rulers you'll ever use. The slots make consistent marks that are very reliable. A 12 inch T ruler would be best, but this one is also cool.

Wool Socks - if you live in a cold climate and his shop isn't heated, this would be an awesome gift. I got these socks specifically and they are awesome. Me feet never overheat, but they keep me very warm and are very comfortable. This is a damn good deal actually... I might order these now.

I recommend making sure you have several items:

• Hamper (foldable or collapsible is best for college students.)
  
• Laundry bag (Just in case you don't want to carry your hamper to your laundry facility, or your hamper isn't carry friendly.)
  
• Desk lamp (any kind should be fine, so that way if your room mate is sleeping you don't have to have the entire room lit up)
  
• Power strips (you never know when you're going to need to plug something in, and you might run out of wall plugs)
  
• Change jar (spare change is always useful especially when ordering food, so you can give exact change. Don't forget to tip! You can make one of these yourself for basically free minus the cost of a bottle)
  
• Desk organizer (To keep your class syllabi in, as well as any returned papers. It's very easy to lose all of that stuff, and you never know if you might need it again during the semester.)
  
• Flip flops/shower shoes (keep them cheap because they're only for the bathroom, chances are that bathroom will be shared by you and several others, and most likely won't be the cleanest place)
  
• Healthy (ish) snack foods (whatever foods appeal to you really, but that's a start for some ideas, trust me healthy food is good, you don't want that freshman 15 to catch up to you too quick now!)
  
• Alarm clock (or you can use your phone which is what I ended up doing last year, but make sure it doesn't die!)
  
• Headphones (so you don't annoy your roommate with your choice of tv/music/movies/etc.) Here's three more headphones for variety, all of which are great for the price range. Klipsch, Vsonic, Sony(these Sony MDR-V6 go on sale every so often, they were literally just on sale for $54 and are absolutely fantastic for the price range)
  
  That's basically everything I either wish I had brought, or found very useful. Oh yeah, don't forget your cell phone, cell phone charger, laptop/desktop and appropriate cables. Also don't forget to do your laundry somewhat regularly, and that includes your sheets!

Feedback: You had a really nice intro segment animation, which tells me you really want to get into making videos because those segments cost $$$. So if you want to make these videos look more professional quite easily, get yourself an entry-level DSLR (e.g. Canon T3i), a very good wireless mic (e.g. Sennheiser EW 100 ENG G3), and some better natural lighting, nothing crazy, just like two of these (Boston Harbor TL-TREE-134-BK-3L 3-Light Tree Lamp, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003A9E734/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_qSxpDPmTDk8rz ). This would all cost like $1000 or a little less if you shop around and would REALLY take your vids up a notch instantly. Lastly, if you're able to, pick yourself up a copy/subscription of Adobe Premiere Pro CC and start toying around with your videos in there. Learn some tricks, watch some tutorials on YouTube, just play around with your videos in there for a few months. You will definitely learn some tricks and cuts that will make your videos seem much more professional. Then find all the places on the net that your target audience is at (like this subreddit), and share the content directly with them there. Better yet, figure out exactly what they're talking about and wanting, and then make quickly videos in reply and share it directly with them. These are the steps you must take if you truly want success in video.

I'm in the process of building my first FPV drone with my 11 year old son. Tools I owned or have purchased for this are:

A set of small screw drivers. I found a set in the bargain bin at NAPA Auto that had straight, philips, a few hex, a few sockets.

A decent electronics soldering station. Not the gun. I have a digital Weller that is easy to control, but the analog is just as good for these purposes.

A third hand. There are many different kinds. I got a cheap $5 one at Harbor Freight. Not great, but does the job.

Solder, de-soldering wick, flux (maybe)

Depending on where you're doing your work, might want an air-filter or fan.

A magnifying lamp is helpful but not necessary.

An assortment of board stand-offs/spacers is handy.

A good small pair of wire snips.

Wire stripper

A digital multimeter is not a bad idea.

Those are all the major tools you might need. Plus all the drone parts. batteries/charger. Radio/receiver. Camera/receiver(goggles or screen).

In short, it's a lot of stuff. The drone parts end up being the least expensive part, honestly.

You mentioned you're on a budget, which I totally understand. Building is not the cheapest route, but it's been a lot of fun so far. People who've done it for a while tend to forget the cost of tools. Once you've built one, subsequent drones are relatively cheap. You can re-use batteries, the charger, most decent radios, even the receiver.

If you're not in a hurry, Bangood is a good source for cheap(er) parts. You're on your own for support, usually, but there's lots of help out there.

Hey, glad you're using the info off this subreddit. I'm not just wasting words! :D

As for my thoughts on camera and green screen, IncredibleMacho is right that lighting really is the most important thing. Until I got my lighting kind of figured out, my c920 looked pretty bad. My HP-4110 cam was looking better by default, but I think with good lighting the C920 is a little bit better (but probably not noticeable on stream).

once I swapped the 4 lights in my ceiling fan with these Phillips Daylight LED Dimmable lightbulbs then the color and brightness in my room was finally getting up there. But that alone isn't enough. That helps with ambient light, but I still need a light over my monitors pointing right at me to really fill in.

For that setup, I'm using this:

  The lamp arm attaches to the desk just like the mic arm does. The dimmer switch isn't exactly required, but it does mean that I can adjust the brightness of that light that is on me and puts the switch on my desk. Otherwise, I'd have to reach around the back to get to the lamp switch.
  
  The green screen I'm using is this 6ft x 9ft Chromakey Green Backdrop. The stands are nice and tall, but it isn't very wide. I cropped the camera shot in OBS down (hold ALT + drag the edges of the camera) so that my screen area just fits in it, and that is just barely larger than I am. Part of that size is because it is a couple feet behind me and angles out to pickup light from that ceiling fan in the middle of the room.
  
  But as some people have said, you really could create your own custom one for cheaper. The fabric on this thing is just basic green dyed cloth. You'd do just as well with any cheap colored cloth (doesn't have to be green, just needs to be a color you won't wear) from any fabric store (some walmarts sell fabric). How you hang it is up to you. For convenience though, this kit for $63 right now on Amazon isn't bad.
  
  Good luck with your setup! Just know that it won't work like magic when you get your items, so don't get upset if you set it up and it doesn't immediately look perfect. It almost certainly won't and will still require tweaking things for a while. I'm comfortable enough now with mine that I don't even really think about it now when I start streaming. But when I first got it, I had to adjust lighting and camera settings for a bit every day.

Ahahah ISN'T HE CUTE? The snails name was Jared! Boyfriend and I found him in a parking lot! Sometime shortly after the pictures were taken I declared Jared as TooGross, but for a while he was cool. I don't mind icky stuff but snails get weird fast. I love their little snail mouths, they've.. like,

So in the background of a lot of the pictures you can probably see some disassembled (mostly American made) pocket watches. I take pictures at the watch desk because he uses a daylight lamp (like this) to see better. Um. It is very nail polish friendly! ;)

Ok take my opinion for what it is (an opinion).
I like the idea that you suggested for color temp, I would go with 3500K temp for the LED, 4000K is to blue for a warm comfy feel in the room and 3000 is a little to red for my taste. 3500 is perfect for a living room setting, but if you can not find it I would go with 3000K.

I would go with a center light like you have but flush mounted, then either choose a nice sconce on the same switch mounted to the wall or a [three light floor lamp] (https://www.amazon.com/Boston-Harbor-TL-TREE-134-BK-3L-Light-Black/dp/B003A9E734/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523457838&sr=8-1&keywords=floor+lamp+with+three+lights) in the corner with the lights pointed at the ceiling and wall to get a nice reflective light lighting the room but also allowing for spot lighting when needed.

I would also go with dimmable fixtures, for the times when you do not need it to be as bright.

My general experience is when we light out rooms ourselves we have a tendency to not provide enough light for all situations and just go with what is good enough. So I am all for having multiple lights in a room, that are just ready for when needed, but left off when you want the warm comfy feel.

If you want to see if you have enough light already or not, buy a lamp and plug it in and move it around to see if you could use more light and if so where it would be best to place it.

 If its your first tank, start out with easy-to-grow plants and you wont need CO2 or expensive lights. <br />
 I got a GE 50 watt equivalent daylight 6500k r20 flourescent light specifically and put it into the old style lamp that uses bulbs and is tall and has an adgustable arm like [so](http://www.amazon.com/Boston-Harbor-Architect-Swing-26-Inches/dp/B002ZKDUVE) but older and could probably be found at the thrift store for cheap.  <br />

For the substrate I got a bag of miracle grow pro choice organic. You have to get all of the floating wood and bits first. I used a bunch of buckets and time. I poured a bunch into the bucket and then filled it with water, and then waited a day and skimmed off the wood and anything that was floating. You could use the wood and the other byprodeucts as extra nutrient mulch and water if you want. I then carefully skimmed off the water once clear each day untill I was close to the bottom. When it was too shallow to skim water I carefully laid plastic wrap down, weighted that with some little rocks, let it sit for a day, and then poured off as much water as I could. Then I mixed a little nutrient rich dirt from my house and little sand to start off the bacteria and make the dirt a little thicker. By now it wasn't very watery but too watery to use. I let it sit in the sun in my aquarium until enough water had evaporated. Then I put the plants a little bit into the dirt and put a sand cap on. Note: I am not sure if I did it the most optimal way and made it more complicated or not since I didn't have anything to sift the dirt with. The sand I used was some quartzy kinda rocky sand from a small creek beside my house that I rinsed very thoroughly since it looked natural and was free. I have heard that you can also use black diamond blasting sand once rinsed very thoroughly as well for a black sand and pool sand if you want a cheap white sand that will get dirty quickly and look bad in my opinion.

For plants look for low-medium light and high-medium hardy plants like wisteria, java fern or moss, water sprite (close to but not wisteria), Bacopa monnieri, duckweed, Sagittaria subulata, Echinodorus tenellus, Rotala rotundifolia, Riccia fluitans, tripartita japonica, also check out tropica for other plants, pictures, info, and they have a pretty good rating system.

As for the cycle it would be best to do it with plants since they will soak up the ammonia and grow in the water instead of algae. I added water to about half of what I eventually wanted because I would have to dump it out later anyways. I changed it about maybe 1/3-1/2 one day after and then waited a few days. I still havn't added a filter since I don't have animals yet and snails plus water movement from a siphon have cleared up algae I have had so far. Also the Diana Walstad pdf is very good for another step by step guide for what you need. Edit: I have no idea why this post looks weird

Many people in this sub will probably scoff at this, but that is just a random soft white CFL from my cupboard! I had planned to replace it with a more suitable light after some proper research, but I couldn't help but notice that the plants really took off right away. I'm not at home now or I'd post a pic, but the plants are doing just fine under that light. I'm definitely overdue to trim them up as it is currently a jungle in there (but the baby shrimp love it!)



The desk lamp, which I love, is from Amazon. And I also picked up a timer which is set to come on for about 7 hours a day with a 2 hour siesta mid-day.


I didn't go with a dry start method. I stuck with the shrimp bowl directions on the first three pages of that document. The dry start method is fantastic for carpeting plants, but I don't really have any of those in my jar. I honestly half expected my first foray into the Walstad method would be a failure so I didn't want to invest too much into it, but everything is going fantastic. I am blown away at how easy it has been. I initially had some melt on the crypts and the sword, but they recovered and started new growth in about a week!

Looks like a solid start to me! I would recommend not fully assembling your models before you paint them, some places can be hard to reach when fully assembled.

1. The army painter range of brushes is a solid starting point, I think they have a starter pack with a few essential brushes. Get a tub of brush cleaner and clean your brushes throughout your time painting, I like to clean them when I change colors. This will keep in good condition and extend their life!
   
   
2. I like the GW plastic glue, it melts the pieces together for a strong connection! Super glue is also good and if you need to change a model up you can freeze them and they will snap apart.
   
   
3. I like the GW brand primers, though they are expensive! I've used army painter before and had mixed results, some good some terrible.
   
   
4. I do not have any experience with sealers.

In all things storage, think "vertical" or "hidden"/"built-in" to save space.

• Get a bed and bedframe, and put rolling storage containers underneath for your clothes. It saves space AND likely doesn't cost as much as a dresser. Example.
  
• Use a hanging shoe organizer on the back of your door to store stuff. One idea: Use it to store your food more efficiently. Example.
  
• You need more lighting. It's much cheaper (and looks cooler) to hang up lights on the ceiling. Think of draping them in a zig-zag from one end of the room to the other. Cafe lights look awesome.
  
• You'll probably still need at least one extra lamp, though. Tripod lamps look great.
  
• Your bed will be the feature of your room for years; make it look good! Get a light grey or cream-colored duvet, two big white pillows (to sleep on), some decorative grey pillows, and one faux leather lumbar pillow in cognac, to put it in front of the grey pillows and tie it all together.
  
  • Go one step fancier and get a blanket to drape over the bed. Navy blue or emerald green would look good. (Bonus: You have a blanket to curl up with.)
    
• Get nesting tables. These can double as your coffee table, eating space, and extra table space when you have friends over, but will "nest" when the extra table space isn't needed, saving space.
  
• This rug (2115, in navy blue) would look great in the space, it's affordable, and the darker color will be more forgiving of heavy traffic.
  
• If you can only get one plant, either get pothos or monstera. Both make big statements.
  
  Obviously you need a desk and a chair, and probably some bookshelves, but these are the big things I thought of. Good luck!

super basics:

• x-acto knife, super glue, plastic cement, side cutters (ideally flat cut, but these are good enough and inexpensive if you don't already have a pair), #1 round brush, #3/0 round brush (or a #2 and a #0), proper lighting, a palette, some kind of primer (check the sidebar), 2 water cups/jars (one for rinsing your brush, the other for clean water).

• basing materials and PVA (white) glue, MOAR brushes, needle files, sticky tack and mounting supplies (think corks), Masters' Brush Soap, epoxy putty (typically "green stuff").
  
  I use this lamp for painting, as do a few other people here. I generally only use the magnifier for prep work though.
  
  For starting out, I like this brush set. The package it comes in is a small dry palette, and nearly all of the brushes are useful, except for the 6 round and the 1 round liner. You will want to pick up some better brushes once you get a feel for things. I bought this set when I got back into the hobby last year and even though I do have nicer brushes, I still use these for basic work.
  
  Picking up one of these at the craft store (with your coupon, ALWAYS use your coupon at the craft store) is probably the most cost effective source of basic starting basing materials. Scene-O-Rama is Woodland Scenics' craft store brand, so it's decent stuff. You don't need to worry about this kind of stuff unless you're going to be working in minis that don't have integral (built-in) bases though.

This might seem odd, but one of the things that's most helped me in my coin enjoyment is a nice desk lamp I got from my GF's parents. This is the one and costs a little less than $50. It has a really heavy base, maybe 6-7 lbs, touch on/off and light setting buttons, a usb port to charge a phone on or whatever, and looks pretty sharp! I really like it for checking out coins under magnification because my room is so poorly lit. I mostly like to check out the change I get to look for errors, I don't have much for valuable coins. Really helpful for homework too.

The LEDs are long-lasting, fully dimmable, and can change color from pure white to a soft yellow. There's also a USB port built into the lamp so you can change a device from the lamp itself. Finally, the whole thing is on a swinging arm that can pivot and rotate however you want. After looking at several lamps that were similar to this one, I think this is the best of the bunch. So I bought it and I love it. It's a great lamp, definitely worth the price!!

You can point it at the wall in order to get a diffuse light across the whole room...or point it directly at your table for when you're working on something intricate like writing or crafting.

I just put my Hue bulbs in the lamps I already owned and it felt like an instant upgrade for ambiance thanks to the ability to soften up the light by adding a bit of color. I don't use a lot of color, but by adding a bit of orange or a bit of red to light, it makes the room feel warmer and more cozy at night.

I did buy a tree lamp like this for my living room, specifically because of Hue. I bought it because I do a lot of scripting with Hue (Applescript) and I like having a multiple bulb lamp for notifications. For example, when I use my universal remote to switch iTunes from playing on my Mac to streaming to my living room stereo, the top bulb in this lamp blinks (one quick blink). If I switch streaming to my Apple TV, the second bulb blinks. If I switch streaming back to my Mac, the bottom bulb blinks. And if there's an error (which hasn't happened yet, but I built in the option just in case) all three bulbs blink three times. I like having visual notification for button presses on a remote that would otherwise have no visual confirmation when I'm sitting at my couch (since my Mac is too far away to see, not to mention that its monitor is probably asleep anyway). Also, if I use my universal remote to turn off shuffle on iTunes, the bulbs in this lamp blink in order, 1, 2, 3, from top to bottom. If I use my remote to turn shuffle on, the bulbs blink 1, 3, 2, as a reminder that shuffle is now on.

I do this stuff using the Hue API which is well documented.

The was on sale for next to nothing when I bought it, so it was low risk... but now that I've owned it for a while, I plan on replacing it with something similar but more high end looking.

If you do any scripting with Hue, a lamp like this can be fantastic since it has multiple bulbs facing in different directions. Very highly recommended!

Find a dark corner of the room, set up a table, put something on it, shine a bright directional light at it, and paint it. You don't need a fancy setup to start painting still lifes; even a suboptimal one is good enough for studies. And as long as you can set it up in a corner that won't be disturbed you can leave it up for as long as you need to.

This is the lamp I'm using these days, by the way, and it's much better: clean, white light, very bright, like a little spotlight, and the flexible neck makes it super easy to adjust. But there are youtube videos and other instructionals out there for setting up a proper shadow box for setting up your still lifes in if that's something you have time and inclination for.

cool carpet, although it's not my ideal color type, it seems to fit with your couch. You can add some indoor plants here, add some side tables having shelves where you can add your favorite books like this one or this one or something that will match your existing furniture, or if you got some collectible, you can add it. You can also invest with some lightings like this one, you can add some wall art here like a multi-panel like this one here or a single panel like this one here or you can have a custom one depending on what you like

I don't use any magnifiers, but desk lamp wise I grabbed this a while ago and really like it.

The max brightness is very crisp, clean light. The lower settings are good for other normal desk lamp uses as well when I'm not painting.

I do like mine, I easily get a day of tuning and tweaking out of a full battery. The screen isn't bright enough to compete against direct sunlight (nothing much really is though) but it is brighter than I expected for the price.

If you are like me, blindish, you may want to consider a lighted magnifying glass too. Something like this. I found mine at a thrift shop a while ago for like $5 though I did eventually replace the old cfl ring light with a custom LED setup. It is really nice for the little transistors and such that have more than just 2 pins.

Get a great lamp

I'd recommend this over a spot lamp, it's LED, so lasts longer and is more controllable than a standard bulb. It's also super bright and the long strips of LEDs give great coverage.

It also has a bloody USB slot! To charge your phone! How good is that??

I was hesitant to get it because I thought it was gonna be a lot smaller for some reason, but I love it and it's the perfect size. It can rotate, tilt, have different brightness levels and settings (with an hour auto-shutoff timer button), and has a USB port for charging electronics. And it's a good price on Amazon at around $60.

This is the exact lamp that I bought. It's just a nice bright LED with a positionable gooseneck, and a weighted base. The base fits perfectly in the cutout shape on the top.

I just mounted a surge protector strip in the inside of the box, and the desklamp is plugged into it along with all my hero panel lights. That way I've got one switch to turn the whole thing on.

Lighting it from the top like that is REALLY a must to get the effect.

It's great! This is the one I have. The touch control works very well. It has 5 different color modes (basically a spectrum from a bright LED to a softer yellow color) that you change by tapping on the icon above the brightness display, and a USB charging port on the back.

It swivels at the base to rotate left and right, folds at the base of the neck to flatten/make more upright, swivels at the top part to adjust angle of light AND folds at the top of the neck for compact stowing.

Edit: Forgot the most important part- it serves as a headphones stand, too! Ha

I have a basic table and chair with this LED lamp as the light source. It's very adjustable and has a low footprint so I can make sure I'm not hunched over the table while also having a plethora of brightness / wavelength options to fit my needs. There are brighter lamps available, but I liked the metal construction and the fact that the lamp can be twisted at the top arm. If those factors aren't important to you, this one is cheaper and brighter.

As far as making sure your back isn't wrecked, that can probably be fixed by better posture. Instead of hunching over the table to get a closer look at the figure, sit upright and hold the figure closer to your face. I imagine table height would be the most important factor there since I rest my elbows on the table when I paint, so the table being the correct height means I can sit upright and hold the figure in front of my face.

Camera above your head: Logitech C920 webcam, mounted on a boom arm (can be positioned however you want to). It's a decent enough quality if you have good lighting. Couple of high power, bright white lights on a table stand and you should be good. I'm using one right now, but if I could, I'd use two. Taking pictures of your work: a good DSLR camera would be suited, with a good lens. Expensive option though. You could get away with using the webcam to take pictures and it'll look decent. Sony A6000 is a nice option, and if you want something fancier, Sony A7 III.

I have two windows in my bedroom but they're both surrounded by trees, so there isn't much natural light.

Artwork would definitely help a lot. Any suggestions where I should look?

I actually planned on buying a better desk lamp. I was thinking about this one - Do you think it's alright?

Also, can you (or anyone else) recommend a decent fps gaming mouse that isn't too expensive? If I were to get one, I would want it to match my keyboard, however I don't really like the idea of spending $50 or more on a mouse.. Unless of course there is notable difference between that and an everyday ordinary mouse.

I used one of these for a while and just upgraded to one of these. The first one is pretty good for just painting, the second one is great for painting and a pretty good all-around desk lamp.

I love my taotronics lamp that I got off Amazon. You can control the brightness and the warmth of the light (so if warmer lights bother you less for example) which helps me a lot!!!

This guy grows all kinds of things indoors that are normally outdoor plants. He can be entertaining too. He uses high intensity compact fluorescent lights.

I overwinter many tropical plants every year. I generally don't provide extra light but this year I'm going to set up a adjustable arm lamp with a 100W fluorescent for a miracle fruit plant I got this spring. Many people don't realize that even shade outside is much brighter to plants than even a sunny window inside. The glass blocks a lot of the light plants need.

The biggest problems I usually have indoors are scale insects and regulating moisture levels....especially in the spring. You really have to be attentive because water requirements change during during the year and it's easy to overwater even with plants that have proper drainage.

Edit: I had intended to mention that you can put an inexpensive timer on the lamp to turn it off at night and to make sure it's on every day.

I would suggest one of these clip on lights I use them for an art table that tilts and other random things (sometimes like a flashlight). You can adjust the lighting angle to how you want and it's got a pretty good color and strength. You can use them for pretty much anything, I actually use mine to illuminate my wardrobe right now.

• Mallet - Useful for hitting things without marring up the finish.
  
• Vise Block - I use a Magpul Bev block for work on my lower or upper. Waiting for the next Geissele sale so i can snag a Geissele Super Reaction Rod to replace the Bev block on upper work.
  
• Allen Wrenches - I have this set of 3 hex-torx allen wrenches. Super handy for rails and other mount screws. Might also want a long handle set if you use a hex screw for your pistol grip like i do.
  
• Torque Wrench - I have this Tekton torque wrench for barrels nuts, castle nuts (if you do torque yours, i don't usually), and whatever else needs to be torqued.

May work better than those small lamps, the led bulb got really good reviews so is proven, and also the lamp was just personal because i think architect lamps ar too damn beautyfull to pass the chance to put one in a desk. So that combination would provide good light to ur plants, but mostly check for what u like lamp wise, just know that led bulb is advised widely on amazon compared to those lamps u linked.

I did not actually use flash! I just have two lamps with very white bulbs at my desk mounted on both sides as seen in this photo.

I positioned the lamps to be in front of the shoes for each photo so that I could have good lighting from two sides.

I love the lamps a lot. I totally recommend them to anybody looking for a desk lamp. Other lamps take up space on my desk and these can be moved around very easily to wherever I want them.

Man that's a tough space to work with. Honestly the only thing I think will help with aesthetics is to sell that bookshelf and get a leaning one that's the same color of your TV stand. Try to hang the guitar if possible, and maybe get a different floorlamp that matches your other furniture. I'll link the style of bookshelf and possible lamp style I'm thinking of. Best of luck!

with some extra work you might be able to fix an old junky tripod head to the lamp and use the tripod handle for some extra control, but I think the natural movement of your hand may feel more organic.

If the lamp springs are strong then even if you let go the camera should stay in relatively the same position.

I got a floor lamp at IKEA that has a button you step on to turn it on, it's good for reading bedtime stories. And then maybe a dimmable desk lamp for diaper changes. I got this one on Amazon and it can do yellow and blue light and has different brightness settings. When it's folded closed, there's a little bar in the back that light can come out of for super dim lighting, and I actually really like using it that way late at night.

That guy is pretty etiolated. Just because they are near a window doesn't mean they are getting adequate light. I have my succulents on a west-facing windowsill that gets blasted with super bright sunset light and yet they are STILL etiolating. You might want to either invest in a grow light or put in on a south-facing window. If you want to do a grow light (which I realize you are in an office and space is valuable), this clip lamp and this bulb.

Hmm. Personally I'm a fan of Architect Desk Lamps, but ultimately I'd just make sure to go with a color that matches your desk/peripherals. Since everything is a dark brown/black I'd stick to that color lamp. Silver/grey might look good since you have a white wall.

High lumen LED light bulbs like these, or building your own key light with LED strips is the way to go.

They all run extremely cool. When using bulbs, you'll want something like a positional desk lamp so you can spotlight areas that might have shadows and blast them out of existence.

That's the super budget way to go.

Hey man, i know it has been 3 weeks since you have posted this, but I too have had similar issues. I have an idea of what would be ideal, but have had too much life going on to do anything about it.

I was thinking of buying a used makeup mirror with a light ring, and replacing the mirror with a magnifying glass and attaching it to the articulating arm of a lamp. It would end up something like this. I am a cheap ass and think it is too much money for something I can build myself from some thrift store items, but you may not be as cheap as me or in need of the magnifying glass.

I think every shop needs a lamp like this with the brightest LED you can get. LEDs are great, all I ever use anymore.

I would assume that there aren't a lot of monitor arms that use non-gas springs, if any. It would but somewhat unsightly, though you can cover them up.

If you get a lamp that can fit that softbox and fire those bulbs, you should have a decent setup. You can check my VODs if you need examples. I hope my links are good, because I am on mobile haha. But yeah, that setup works wonders for me so far.

This is the Lamp. It's nothing special but it definitely looks nice with the rest of the setup I like to think.

You could get a clamp light like this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HX2EVPS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_oeMqDbAP9ZZTH) and clamp it to that shelf and put a grow bulb in it so you can place it above. Just make sure the lamp can handle your bulb wattage. Or I’m sure a floor reading lamp works great too.

For a walstad like I described, I originally just used a small ikea desk lamp. It was this one actually.

You can also buy a timer for the light, so you won't ever need to worry about missing a day. This is my favorite timer so far. They have cheaper ones that work great too.

You should never need to feed the walstad bowl I described. At most, you'd have to add a glass of water every few days. You'll never need to do a vacuuming session on it. Just topping off should be fine. I've got my walstad bowl I made forever ago, and it still looks awesome. I've borrowed its light for weeks at a time, so it sat in the dark, and it's fine. I top it off every few weeks when I realize its getting REALLY low.

Super low maintenance. Looks beautiful. Just buy a large glass bowl (a few gallons), miracle grow organic potting soil, gravel, the plants you choose, and a piece of driftwood to get started. If you want to add a lamp on a timer, it's an extra ~$30 probably. You'll need a small bottle of dechlorinator too, but you'll need like a drop of it per large glass of water for the most part. If you stay on top of just adding a half cup or so every day (assuming its a hot day), then you won't even need to bother with dechlorinator after the initial fill.

Ahhh, yeah, somehow I. glossed over "behind the screen" and thought he was talking about LEDs inside the tower.

And yeah, I have a cheap LED lamp I got off Amazon that I have set behind my screen for some back lighting. Works pretty well and has multiple brightnesses and temperatures (aka blue balance) for different times of day.

Still though, the others were def talking about regular ceiling room lighting.

I personally don't think a phal would work in that setting. It would survive, but it won't thrive. It's the Jansjo. I have several in my shop and at home. If you point it down you will get a nice bright spotlight, if you point it at the ceiling or wall you get a nice ambient light. A very good lamp for the price IMO.

As a side note, they fixed the switch problem several of the reviewers mentioned (I have the old and the new).

The new leaves are definitely a good sign. The general recommendation for fertilizer is half strength once a month, or lower strength more often. A lot of people do "weakly weekly," personally I just add a little fertilizer every time I refill my watering can. Basically the more consistently you can do it, the better.

And if you don't think they'll get enough light where you are now, I'd invest in light and a timer. They are low light plants, so they don't need anything fancy - a cheap clip on light would work, or even any old desk lamp.

Seconding scytheis' comments. I have the AT2020 XLR version and run it through a usb interface with preamps. (would be a good option if you didn't already have a good DAC). It sounds a ton better than the Blue Yeti that I have at the office. You can easily tell which recordings I do where. The Yeti's not bad or unbearable, it's just not as good (despite glowing reviews). Glad to know the USB version of the 2020 is good too though; I might have to switch.

I got mine second hand from a younger cousin who beat it to death recording in college. It's truly nuke-proof. But it will pick up any ambient noise near it. Mechanical keyboard would be super loud but you could mitigate it. You can rig up a boom desk stand similar to this Rode using a cheapo scissor desklamp. There are some forum reviews as to which cheap ones have heftier springs for balancing but I couldn't find it right away. Generally can do it for 1/4 of the price of the real boom.

I love this light since it's pretty affordable for a non purple, white light.

I got a desk lamp and put a daylight bulb in it. This is the one I got, but you could probably find a similar one at a local store. I like it because it's very easy to redirect the light, I have it pointed above my mirror and a second lamp a few feet away to add some additional lighting.

The mattress is also off Amazon. $219 for the mattress, it's the 12 inch Zenus Memory foam in Full Size. I was pleasantly surprised at it's comfort level, considering I was coming down from a $3k King from Mattress Firm, it certianly wasn't 12x the comfort.

You could hit up your local thrift stores for a couple of swing-arm desk lamps. You can find them new for $15-$20, so the thrift store could easily be in the $5-$10 range.

It shouldn't be too difficult to remove the lamp and cord and re-purpose the armature.

Plus, assuming you can find them with the mounts, it will give you another axis of movement. (Of course, you could make your own mount pretty easily, too.)

Yea I think I took the pictures too close though. You can REALLY see every little stroke, a bit harder to sell the illusion. Just for your reference I used 2 of these lamps (I got 2 for $25) and I used these bulbs and this light tent and a point a shoot camera I had laying around. It is like 16ish megapixels and full HD...

This is a pretty good primer. It seems daunting, but it's actually pretty simple once you dive in. You can do this on any scale, from a half-gallon nano tank to as big as you can imagine. If you choose to try live plants, the cheapest lighting there is consists of a clamp light or clip-on desk lamp with a 23 watt 6500k compact fluorescent bulb in it.

It's pretty nice. My only annoyance is having to cycle through light modes instead of having dedicated buttons for cool white, warm white, nightlight, etc. and having the power button doubling as the lowest light intensity on the slider so you have to hold it to turn the light off.

The thing behind the Plustek is a lamp. It has some very bright settings which makes it useful when cleaning negatives or the flatbed scanner.

A few of the spring clips on the back broke when I was unhooking the wires to rearrange stuff. I probably could have fixed them or just taped the wires in. I've had the speakers for probably 10 years so it was more of an excuse than anything to get something new...

I have been growing a bunch of different plants at my cubicle desk at work - which means nowhere near enough sunlight even for a spider plant - and that includes quite a few cottonwood seedlings who are all doing very well.

It is a full spectrum light that is in the same range as natural sunlight. It has been perfect for me, every plant I have put under it has started putting out new growth almost right away and bends toward it just like they do with the sun. (Which is how I am getting interesting curves in my seedlings.)

You do need to keep the lamp about 16 to 18 inches from the plant to get the full amount of light for it though, but it will not put off any amount of heat worth worrying about.

I use one of these, which I like because it clamped onto the edge of my desk, can be powered off a USB port from my computer (directly below it), and has a reasonably flexible gooseneck so I can get the light where I need it. On the down side, there's no way to adjust the brightness. I haven't minded because I basically want full brightness all the time so I can see my mini clearly.

When I attended ReaperCon last August, I noticed an awful lot of TaoTronics desk lamps in use.

I use this one, it’s awesome. It’s not so bright and has different levels so doesn’t mess up your sleep cycle like turning on lights does.

I've been able to have 2-3 hour continuous painting sessions sitting upright in a chair, and not hunched over. Alleviates all kinds of back and shoulder pain.

The focal length is a little short (you need to have the mini a little close to the lens), so on rare occasions the lamp gets in the way of the brush. However the vast majority of the time its perfect.

Desk was designed and built by me and a buddy using pine wood from Home Depot. Decided to try something different by cutting out a "trench" on both sides of the top of table and laying RGB strips in and sealing them in with a frosted acrylic sheet. It's a little bit ugly but to make the upmost of your light, you can surround all or part of your plant space with a mylar (space blanket). If you cut sheets, you can glue them to poster board and make panels for around your grouping of plants. They're super reflective so any light that is not absorbed by the plants, or 'spills over' can get redirected back. I've seen it used underneath plants, or if you have a shelf, you could position the light from one side, and cover the opposite side to get the light shining from both angles :)

Those are some binding/terminal blocks I made awhile back for testing speakers/drivers, etc. I can plug in cables with banana plugs on them, and clip on to the terminals to test different drivers, etc.

There's some led tape/strip lighting under the top most shelf, and a clamp on adjustable led light with magnifying glass built in. I can swing it in when I need, and out of the way otherwise.

There's cheaper options, but I had the organizer and extra bins so I used those.

Fire extinguisher is a Kidde ~3lb standard fire extinguisher. An absolute must imo.

The drawers are great, when I'm properly using them I can keep the desk clutter free.

Generally when I'm working on a project, if it's going to take longer than an hour or so, I put all the parts needed into bins, organize/label all the components. Then get started on the build. I have a small whiteboard to the left of the desk that I can pin up schematics, and take any quick notes while I'm cussing myself for forgetting something obvious.

I honestly am not sure on lamps, I don't have a great eye for them myself. This was one I was looking at earlier but never ended up pulling the trigger on it solely because I can't personally justify $70 on a lamp haha.

I have the KDP90, and I use this lamp. It does the job pretty well.

These were 25 dollars when I bought it. It's modded (duh) and gets in the way a sometimes. But in general it gives me the freedom I need.

That I can do! I will tell you though that i'm still very new at this so my approach was/is kind of weird. Before the Arduino I bought a remote controlled outlet kit and had fun turning my lamp on and off for awhile.

But then I got curious and busted the remote open. And found it had a little transmitter that was talking to the outlet converter that i plugged my lamp into. Click the switch, it sends a signal to the converter, lamp goes on. Click it again, it sends another, lamp goes off. After a little digging I found the frequency needed to talk to the converter (315 Mhz) and ordered a 315Mhz transmitter and receiver kit which would plug directly into the arduino. Here's where the coding comes in.

I now was on the right frequency but I still needed to know a few more things about the converter so I could talk to it ( send it a signal). BUT because I had the receiver I could listen to the communication the old remote made with the converter. So basically my first code used the receiver to eavesdrop on a private talk to hear a password. Then all I needed to do was create a loop that sends the signal with the transmitter to turn it on and off after a given time.

Be sure you get a daylight bulb that is in 6500k or 6700k. I use a 23 watt but I have it on a desk clamp light with a very long adjustable arm so I can pull it higher or lower depending on how much light I needed. Mine is pulled up quite a bit, about a foot from the substrate. Might try a 16 watt? I have medium plants in my tank. Pearl weed, hydrocotyle Japan, Rotala Indica, luwigia, Alternanthera reineckii, and some moss. They're all doing well actually with flourish once a week. I'd like to put in a root tab but I'm afraid for my shrimp.

Chairs are super tricky, I would recommend trying them out before buying. The next chair I get will probably be an ergohuman style chair. ( Something with an aggressive lumbar and a headrest which is lacking in most chairs )

Any normal looking chair with robust padding is probably a 'safe' choice though. Just stay away from barely padded fake leather chairs. Padding is really the most important factor if you're going in blind.

I have a cheap swing-arm lamp - $20 - with a - $4 - clamp-on mechanism for my desk. That and a bright white, high lumen bulb will work very well for $30~. A friend has a more robust version, which is basically a giant hinged arm with built-in, color-changing LED bulbs. That's much more impressive but is > $100.

I've been using one of these for a few months now. I like that it's both nonintrusive (for maximum desk work space) and flexible. I have another smaller general lamp near my desk to provide ambient light in the area, and use the LED light above to really focus on my work.

I don't think so, the watts per gallon rule doesn't really work that well, especially under 10 gallons. I would just get a cheap clamp on gooseneck lamp and a small (7watt) compact fluorescent bulb. This would also allow you to raise and lower the lamp to get more or less light.

There was a LPT here recently where someone got a desk lamp, the kind that you can move around the actual light part, like this, and put an incandescent lightbulb in it and shine it on their hands to keep it warm. I would go with a heat lamp bulb, though, less brightness.

Set one up on each side so the light comes from above your shoulders.

My only beef with many hobby store brushes is the dreaded "hook-tip" that cheap nylon brushes quickly develop. Otherwise, you are right. You don't need ultra high-end brushes. Just one or two solid kolinksy sable ones of appropriate size.

I TOTALLY agree with the decent lamps. I have 2 swing arm lamps clamped to my desk that I angle to the middle so that I don't have shadows. Here are some like I use.

Tip for brush control: Rest your arms on the edge of the table. That alone will help a lot, then when doing fine fine detail (like pupils) flex and press against the table (it hurts cause its working)

Also it looks like your not letting coats dry between layers (swirly patterns) not a bad thing (its called wet blending, but its something that needs to be practiced)

Chitin (skin) - Do the crimson onto the primer for the fleshy bits then paint the screaming skull alone to cover up the shade in the wrong spot.

For the carapace, yes, want to do it even faster and have it look not half bad? do it via dry brushing
