Wow, all those comments on prevention of pressure ulcers aren’t much help when you are already dealing with one, eh?

I had one at 9yo, partly due to a sitting obliquity because of scoliosis, partly because I was prescribed a wheelchair with no special seating. I was stuck at home off school (with a visiting teacher for 2 hours 3x/wk) for 6 weeks which felt like years. I’ve had small minor reoccurrences 2-3x (I’m now almost 40) even though I take care of my skin and sit on specialized seating. Some people are more prone because of things like these. My most recent experience of skin breakdown was just because my skin got super dry this year (apparently a hormone thing for women my age).

Here’s what I’d suggest to help you cope:

  • unless you’ve had flap surgery, ask your doc how much time you can be vertical each day and save something special each day for that time. A friend visit, make a sandwich, wheel outside.... for me it was an hour each day, and I liked to use it to go for a wheel around the block or hang out with friends. It helps keep you sane!
  • ask if you can use a Ride cushion to be up and around a short time each day (assuming your ulcer is on your butt or sacrum?). There are Ride cushions or Roho cushions that float your bony areas so they don’t have pressure on them that you might be able to buy or borrow to minimize risk while you’re up. Your wound care team should have an OT who could help you find something.
  • meals: sign up for your local meals on wheels organization which in many North American cities can deliver a healthy meal to you once a day for a very low price. If you can afford it, try Home Chef, Chef’s Plate or another meal delivery service - some deliver full meals, others deliver everything ready to cook. If you’re in a city, try online ordering for grocery delivery from a local grocery store and choose a variety of skillet meals - they are healthier than TV dinners and only take 10 minutes in a frying pan.
  • connect with a local SCI organization and ask them for suggestions/programs for home bound people. United Spinal has chapters all over the US, and look up Spinal Cord Injury Canada if you are in Canada (fm me too if you are, I can connect you with the org near you).
  • sign up for a box/crate club like Escape The Crate it The Mysterious Package every month, giving you a puzzle to solve or mystery to uncover with clues each month.
  • watch streamers (if you’re not working). Twitch.tv and YouTube Live has lots of options. There are people gaming, cooking, building, making things, coding, illustrating, writing music, etc and it can be a good way to connect with a community of like minded people online that will help you keep the isolation at bay
  • get a Skillshare.com or Lynda.com account (a video course platform) often free through your local library and commit to learn a new skill while you’re healing. Having a target to work toward can help the time go by.
  • Reddit is your friend- I swear, you can stay occupied for months on Reddit.
  • there are lots of work at home jobs you can do that only involve a computer especially if you have customer service or call centre experience or know anything about computers. Amazon is known for hiring armies of home based web service testers, for example.
  • I recently bought this bed desk on Amazon, it works well on couches, beds or at a desk, allowing you to lie flat to work, read or watch Netflix: Uncaged Ergonomics WorkEZ Best... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07B9MHT4V?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
  • get a big roll pillow or one of those wedge shaped cushions shaped like a wheelchair ramp (like this: DMI Supportive Foam Bed Wedge Leg Rest Cushion Pillow for Back Support, Elevating Legs and Acid Reflux, Blue, 12 x 24 x 24 https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004X7CBFS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_URhzCb1DYAKBR) to help you find new positions to lie in. You can lie on the wedge on your belly in bed, on the long plane of the ramp with your arms off the short flat edge, with your computer on the bed itself, or use the wedge to support you laying on one side or the other. I have one I put my legs on so I can lie on my back.
  • get a free account for Zoom or use FaceTime to connect with friends you can’t see while you’re at home. You can even watch movies with friends using Facebook now, which is a nice way to do something with friends remotely.
  • nutrition is really key to recovery so I would ask your team for suggestions for a supplement that can increase your protein intake. http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/Nutrition/DietPressureUlcers.pdf

I’m thinking I might turn this into a toolkit for folks on bedrest for my work (I work for a SCI non profit, I make health resources), so let me know if I missed anything or if you have more questions!
u/kellyfeverxo · 1 pointr/Fibroids

I had a major myomectomy about 7 months ago and it took me about a full month to feel like myself again. Of course, all our recoveries are different. I know I wrote a lot here, but just wanted to be as helpful as possible. Good luck!

  1. The first week you will have a very hard time getting around. Make sure you are recovering somewhere where you don't have to walk up and down stairs. If you do have to walk up and down stairs, make sure you have a friend or family member that can spot you for the first few days.
  2. If you're able to have a friend or family member stay with you the first few nights, this would be really helpful, especially if there are any emergencies.
  3. You're going to get super constipated. Make sure you're eating prunes or anything else to help in that department!
  4. Because my constipation was really bad, I weaned myself off pain pills and took a high dose of CBD oil in its place (of course, if you feel comfortable doing this). Charlotte's Web has really high quality CBD oil.
  5. High-waist panties are really helpful at keeping all your bandages in place. I really like these ones.
  6. It's really important that the wounds don't get infected. I took Dr Christopher's INF formula and Wild Oregano oil every day after I weaned myself off the pain killers. Of course, you don't have to do this, but I was really paranoid about having to go back to the doctor so soon after my surgery. I do believe this helped deter infections.
  7. The first few weeks I had a hard time getting in and out of bed. What helped me was to pack my sheets really well under the bed, and I'd use my upper body strength to pull on the sheets in order for me to sit upright. Or if you're able to make some kind of "pulley system" on your chairs/beds, this might be helpful too. You want to focus on not using your stomach muscles during recovery and focus on your upper body strength. Of course, having a solid core will help, but you'll be in a lot of pain if you're using your stomach muscles to get in and out of chairs/beds.
  8. Move around once or a few times a day. Just "baby steps" around your house. I would just walk in an out of rooms for a few minutes. Don't overdo it! Sometimes you'll feel like your pain is gone and you'll walk a little faster and then pay for it later on. Take your time :)
  9. If you have animals, I highly suggest getting something like this to help deter them from getting near your belly. It's also nice to have to catch up on work and emails.
  10. I wasn't really able to wear jeans for a few weeks. If you're a leg shaver, you'll have a hard time shaving your legs for a few weeks. While I normally wouldn't care about something like this, I do have to see clients at my job, so I invested in maxi dresses. They have super cute and inexpensive stretchy ones on Amazon. I also invested in some biker shorts to wear under the dress, which helped my belly stay in place, in addition to my high waist undies. Make sure nothing is TOO tight!
  11. I didn't have an appetite for several days after the surgery. Certain food smells made me ill, but you really need to take food with your medication. Get some saltines or Ritz crackers for emergencies.
  12. Don't lift anything heavy. If you think it might be too heavy, it probably is. Ask someone for help.
u/silentastherave · 2 pointsr/diamondpainting

I use a desk with a spinny chair lowered all the way so the desk is about chest level for me. It's much easier on the back and easier to see the designs. I sometimes use my coffee table and sit on the ground but that's a lot less fun.

My lighting is bad everywhere so I just use a clip on desk light like this one. It's extremely nice to be able to move the light around to the part I'm working on.

I've seen these light tables advertised as well. There are also a variety of lap desks and trays that might make things easier on you. A bit pricey but nicer than a tote lid for sure. I wish you good luck and good posture.

u/anathemas · 2 pointsr/Coloring

Hope you find something you like. :)

I just realized I forgot a couple of things, and Amazon is working again, yay!

Krylon setting spray - it's the only setting spray I've ever used, but it sets well, as long as you don't try to change it - quite easy to edit imo (you can look at my recent post, Greyscale portrait, to see that it didn't stop me from editing at all -- and that picture was months old.

Also, I got this lapdesk when I had surgery but still been pretty useful when I want to go outside or color in bed.

My top recs would BV electric eraser and the blending pencils, but I've included everything I consider worth having. :)

u/ScottPilgrimVsUrMom · 2 pointsr/sticknpokes

It’s far from comfortable, but I kinda flex my arm as if I’m getting my blood taken if that makes sense! Second time round I did it in bed, using a little study desk (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07JZ4LDFV?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title - in case you’re interested!) so it was much easier on me! It’s great bc that angle is pretty hard on my neck and tough on my shoulders to keep my arm held out like that (I did it at my dining table first time round and it was too low down so I just kept it flexed out instead) but because it’s a bed desk my arm rested pretty comfortably at the right angle! Sorry if that’s awfully confusing!
And thank you ❤️

u/EeK09 · 1 pointr/aoe

You're more than welcome, I'm glad to help!

I totally understand your position regarding the K63. As I said, if you already have a good pair of keyboard and mouse, that device isn't worth the investment. I only mentioned it because I thought you were more interested in a true lapboard rather than a "lap desk".

I actually purchased a couple of lap desks in the past, but with my laptop in mind: this one and this one.

The second one is really good for laptops when you're lying in bed or on the couch, but I wouldn't recommend it for kb/m use. As for the first option, it works much better as an actual desk replacement, and there's a larger sized version that could be perfect for you, depending on your intended use.

Are you planning on using that desk while sitting on the couch, like Paul does on the video I linked? Then I can vouch for it. If you're thinking about using it while lying down, however, that desk is still too "tall" and uncomfortable to use, even at its lowest height setting.

The one you linked also looks like a nice option, but I'm concerned about those legs - they look rather flimsy. If you're going to support it on a solid base, like a coffee table, it probably won't be an issue. But if you're actually balancing the table on the sofa's cushions, then I'd suggest going for something a little more robust.

u/basurayaya · 1 pointr/Reduction

I just had my surgery this morning, so some answers are super fresh (and some I don't know). I was about a 36GG and had 1000 gram removed.

  • I had it done as an outpatient in the US. I arrived at 7am and left around 11:30am.
  • It definitely hurts! I've had surgery before and this is a more surface level hurt for me, mostly on my sides / armpits where they also did liposuction. My goal is to just keep up with pain meds for the first few days.
  • My doctor uses bandages for the first week, then a soft bra afterward. They provided a list of a few different wireless front close bras on amazon and suggested I buy one that fit me before surgery (to account for swelling) and one that was a size smaller. So, right now I plan to order about 6 different bras later in the the week to take with me to my 1 week follow up. Let me know if you'd like specifics - most were bras I see recommended in this sub.
  1. My surgeon recommends very minimal arm movement for 6 weeks. Elbows should be within 6 inches of hips at all times, no lifting, no hands over head, etc. Her opinion is that this cuts down on width (stretching) of scars).
  2. I bought an adjustable laptop / tv tray from amazon and it has been vary valuable so far in having a level surface and preventing reaching. This is the one I have, but there are lots.

Best of luck to you! I waited a long time to get this done as well (20+ years) and was super excited / nervous the day of. You've got this!
u/GetOffMyLawn_ · 6 pointsr/cfs

I have been able to improve muscle strength and improve aerobic endurance, but I have to be super careful not to trigger PEM. Doesn’t help with the overall fatigue but helps with function. In physical therapy they had me play with clay. They started me with very soft clay and I worked my way up thru stiffer grades of clay. About 5-10 minutes a few times a week.

Something I was looking at the other day was laptop desks for bed. Put your device on that so you don’t have to hold it. Amazon has a bunch.

EDIt: Here's a super fancy one, but you can get simpler cheaper ones https://www.amazon.com/Cooper-Folding-Writing-Storage-Reading/dp/B07JZ4LDFV/ref=sr_1_25?crid=24LZ245S69LNG&keywords=bed+lap+desk&qid=1574440177&sprefix=bed+lap+d%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-25

There's software that will read the screen out loud to you. It’s usually for people with vision impairment. So look on websites that have stuff for the visually impaired. Some of the software packages also take dictation so you don’t have to type.

Arm fatigue can be due to low thyroid. When is the last time you had that checked? Low iron levels can also cause muscle fatigue. Just because we have cfs doesn’t mean we can’t have other issues too.

u/Sarpanda · 2 pointsr/Vive

I don't really understand your space, but honestly...I think it needs some help even from a non-VR stand point. For example, my computer is in the little cabinet with the router on it here (I took an cheap office space cabinet and cut out parts to make actually two computer cases fit inside it):

http://imgur.com/uwrMkfu

...and you'd think, wow, look at those 4 monitors, that's the "battle station I'd like to use...but...actually, I almost never user it. Reason is my room house this couch...

http://imgur.com/5hyqgI2

...so on the opposite wall, I mounted this TV...

http://imgur.com/MGAYfCI

...what is my point? Couch + TV + PC = ultimate gaming experience in 2016. 99% of my gaming, are all done from either a game pad or a lapboard that holds my keyboard and mouse, from my couch to my TV. This was achieved simply by spending about $15 and buying a 25' long HDMI cable, and just routing it from the computer to the TV (in addition to the monitors). You'll find your computer able to run at least 4, possibly 5 monitors if you have a a iGPU as well.

Soooo..if i was in your room, I'd make PC game playing on a wall mounted TV from a couch a priority. In order to do non-game tasks, such as work, e-mail, Reddit, etc, mount your monitor on the wall near the couch such that is could swing out arm on and arm and you could sit on the couch and look at it using a lapboard, I use something like this ( made my own)...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IV3AEZY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00

..and a wall mount like this (I use a cheaper one)...

http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Wall-Mount-LCD-Arm/dp/B010QZCT5W/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1458226352&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=monitopr+mount+wall

More pricey maybe than what maybe you want, but it's not for VR. It's for ranking up to the next level of nerd. I'd do all this irrespective if I was going to get a RIft or a Vive.

The reason is, with this setup you can shit post on Reddit and watch Crunchy Roll/Netflix at the same time. You can easily play Tomb Raider on your PC + TV with a game pad, or play Total War with your Keyboard and mouse.

Now, given that you no longer need your desk area/space you could just get rid of ALL that stuff there, and not only have much cleaner, less cluttered aesthetic, but amble space for either a Vive or a Rift.

u/MeRollsta · 1 pointr/aoe

Thanks for the really informative reply. I'm glad you were able to solve your UI problems.

I'm not particularly looking for a keyboard lapboard like the Corsair lapdog, I just want a flat surface that I can put my keyboard and mouse on while on the couch. I've seen the Corsair K63 and it definitely is interesting. Unfortunately, it costs a lot too, and I don't want to spend $100 or more on a keyboard and mouse when i already have a really good mechanical keyboard and mouse.

I was planning on picking up something like this. It's 24", which is the largest I could find among all the lapdesks. What do you think?

u/tentkeys · 4 pointsr/GradSchool

Excellent idea - I hope it brings you much comfortable productivity!

For anyone else considering this: overbed tables have their pros and cons - you have to be right at the edge of the bed or the table won't reach you. I wound up getting a laptop bed tray instead, that I'm much happier with because I can use it anywhere, not just at the edge. Also works if I want to sit cross-legged on the bed or the floor.

u/fduniho · 1 pointr/ereader

I don't always hold an ereader when I read. One thing that has come in handy is a lap desk. It comes with a slot, which may be for sticking tablets into. Here's a lapdesk I found on Amazon with the same design. I stick my Likebook Mars into it and read hands free except for turning the page. The Likebook Mars has warm lighting, which is what you're looking for.

The only Kindle with warm lighting is the Oasis 3, which is not out just yet. The Oasis is designed to be held with one hand. It has a lopsided design that puts most of the weight on one side.

Assuming European prices are equivalent to American prices, either one of these puts you a bit over budget. Cheaper options include Nooks and Kobos. These have had warm lighting for a while now, though Kindles are otherwise nicer.

u/Dot_Matrix · 1 pointr/RedditLaqueristas

I use this
It was a bit cheaper when I got it though. It's perfect for the job. The hole at the top holds three or four polishes (depending on the brand) and the one at the bottom is great for brushes/orange sticks etc. the surface cleans up from spills/blobs nicely too with remover

u/maltballfalcon · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This laptop desk from my "Window Shopping" list would be pretty cool. And as you're coming back mid-August, I could pretend it was an early birthday gift! I work from home and bring my laptop all over the place. I have a sort of board thing that I made myself, so it's not like I need one right now, but it would be a nice upgrade.

Thanks for the contest and for your service!

u/valkyr · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Yep - agreed. For me, I game on my laptop b/c I spend half the week at the GF's. While I do have a nice custom built PC at home, I also enjoy being able to sit on the couch with her and game while we watch TV, though I need to get a lap desk to protect my man bits.

u/Telewyn · 1 pointr/pathofexile

I too would love controller support for PC.

I use something like this on the couch for a lap desk:

Lap Desk - Fits up to 14”Slim Laptop, Laptop Stand with Cushion & Bamboo Platform on Bed & Sofa, as Tablet Stand/Book Stand/Sleeping Pillow/Knee Desk with Cable Hole & Anti-Slip Strip by HUANUO https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BT6JQRV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EHD1CbT115YQ3

u/Xmortus · 1 pointr/classicwow

Completely an aside from the laptop specifics - don't use a pillow, it's gonna directly cause the two things you want to avoid. The laptop is gonna get hot as shit and in turn make the fans go crazy (loud). That's just how laptops are, especially a laptop with a dedicated graphics card as you are looking to get.

Get an under-laptop cooler and a couch laptop pad. Those are just the first examples I found, you'll have to search around for the best ones of each. The couch pad has a pillow underneath and a hard top, and the under-laptop cooler sits under your laptop (surprise!) and has small fans that'll keep the airflow. It'll make your experience far more comfortable and keep things cool and quiet, and it'll extend the lifetime of your laptop significantly.

u/SGBTK · 3 pointsr/ftm

I’ve been having similar pain, just not constant yet. The only over the counter paid med that stops cramps for me is Aleve. Something about sodium in it or something? Have you tried this one? As for the art/drawing, that’s really cool. Maybe in the meantime you could fashion a desk like this to be able to draw in bed. Good luck dude!

u/pinchic · 2 pointsr/vandwellers

I was thinking of doing that! Either that, or get those super compact tables like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Foldable-Superjare-Breakfast-Portable-Lightweight/dp/B01JRY1ETA

u/weaponized_porn · 3 pointsr/PSVR

Love that controller - what I did for mine was I got a lap tray from Amazon, then I separated the controller from the thruster, and secured both pieces to the tray with industrial velcro. I then added some screws around the border of the thruster/joystick, to further keep it in place.

u/carloselcoco · 4 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Seems like this Logitech N315 Portable Lapdesk & Cooling Pad would be very much enjoyed by /u/MATRONIX!

u/russxbox · 3 pointsr/Lenovo

I did. $1501.50 after taxes. I didn't have time to do as much research on it as I did when picking the Y740 but I did see the heat issue mentioned so I've been using it on this (sorry I don't know how to format links on mobile so here's the raw): Hover X+ - Ultimate Gamer's LapDesk (for 17" Laptops) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00X6J1J6Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_rFLUCbGB4S8JG

Everything's been fine so far, I honestly haven't even noticed the heat through the vent part. But maybe that will change later. Thanks for your concern!

u/orangejake · 1 pointr/ShouldIbuythisgame

You can also get something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005BBPTO0/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_kz00tb09D21QSNCP (or for a slightly more expensive version with a fan this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002VC9F0Q/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_My00tb0KMKFQN5ED)

I got the second one to allow me to use my laptop away from my desk (I hate the trackpad on it even for Web browsing), and I've absolutely loved it.

I bought one of these from Amazon for my Area 51M and love it.

I'm partial to the logitech portable lapdesk:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Portable-N315-939-000395-939-000405/dp/B005BBPTO0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371421533&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+laptop

Cheap, keeps the heat off your lap and the mouse tray is actually very good!

I've had 2 trays with fans and they've both died or eat up my precious USB ports. They also don't do a ton for temperatures, considering the fan will just slow down until it meets its thermal threshold and then spin back up again.

I have a pinched cervical nerve from a car accident and cannot work at all in the library cubicles... I feel your pain, I was in agony after an exam in NSB 145 earlier this term. As this other person suggested, working from home is definitely the way to go if possible w/ a chair that you can raise/lower to your liking. I also recently purchased a lap desk at home that I find comfortable as well (I prop myself up in bed w/ a few pillows behind my back and under my knees). https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00HUEZ7W0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is also amazing (https://www.amazon.ca/Rain-Design-mStand-Laptop-10032/dp/B000OOYECC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492399508&sr=8-1&keywords=macbook+stand) if you are working on your computer for long periods.

Thanks both - I’ve gone for this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01MXZSY6P/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hopefully will do the trick!

If it's just you pick up this up. It was a life saver for dorm living. That and it could work really well depending on your living situation.

Edit: it folds and can be put in a suite case. Really easy, I am planning on using this for when I travel in a few years.

By the way, the bed table I’m using, which I wish would have been more visible in the pic, is this nearpow unit. Highly recommended! Also works to turn our counterspace into a standing desk! Grab the omni, as it is the most cost effective way to read the event, and it collects everything in its proper order, then get yourself one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Sofia-Sam-Oversized-Supports-Laptops/dp/B013J7NI5Y

Because it is an unwieldy beast of a book, and this is by far the most comfortable way to read it. DC seems to love it's mega-sized omni's. Doom Patrol, Fourth World, Infinite Crisis, Blackest Night, etc. etc. they are all either come close to or surpass 1500 pg. The upcoming Statman Omnibnus is going to be over 1600...

I have this table, it's the perfect size for sitting and playing as to keep the drum off the floor as others has suggested. (I just bring the table up onto my bed)
I've also tried placing a thin wash cloth/microfiber cloth over the drum. If does dampen the sound a bit, but only a bit. I've ended up just playing on the drum when I know no one is home. It does suck, I kinda presumed a Japanese product like this would try harder to be less obnoxiously loud with how self-conscious (in a good way) their society tends to be. But I guess that's me just being a bit presumptuous lol.

That part's easy, there's plenty of wireless mice and keyboards. I don't play anything with a M+KB when I'm playing on a TV anyway, I use an Xbox 360 controller with a wireless adapter.

If you really want to use a mouse and keyboard while on your couch, you'll probably need some kind of lap desk like this one so you have something to use your mouse on.

Thanks for the heads up about the legs!

Maybe this?

It's called a lap desk. This looks like the one he's using: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HUEZ7W0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_onrAyb8SHTVAQ

Might be the WorkEZlaptop stand. If not this is what I use. Very flexible positioning and if you want can get the optional mouse pad.

Will run it just fine. I've been playing on a laptop with lower specs for awhile now. Will say either sit at a desk or get one of these (link below) as it will get hot. I prefer playing on a laptop for the mobility, just have to deal with the heat it will produce.

My friends do this, but I know they're jelly of my lapdesk. Also when I'm at home I have a monitor and a keyboard.

I bought this to game in bed without the covers suffocating the machine. CPU or GPU hasn't broke 80c since I have been using this

d) I have the M size, it's large enough for a 17 no doubt, but check the length of your laptop (I mean from the back to the front) because the table is 33cm, they have an even bigger table but it's just a table with no adjustable legs and angle.
With my 15 inches laptop I have enough room for a mouse, I played overwatch on it, but I stopped because I play genji and he needs a low sens on your mouse, which means I have to do big movements to 180, and there's not enough room for that on the table.
