(Part 2) Reddit mentions: The best led strip lights

I put my intakes towards the top of the bucket and my exhaust fan in the lid. It mostly depends on what type of pot you're going to use. If it fills your bucket then you'll want to have them high enough so the air isn't blocked. If there's some space around it then you could go lower but be sure to leave a little space at the bottom if you plan to make a drainage tray. I planned my bucket with a 3 gallon smart pot in mind so i kept the intakes high enough to not be obstructed. There's a link to my first bucket in my profile as Ekropf was kind enough to put it on spacebuckets.com. I haven't taken pics of my 2nd bucket yet, but it's similar. That site has lots of great pictures and info. If you do end up using an intake fan you'll want to mount it somewhere that doesn't blow directly on the top of your pot as it will dry out the top layer of the medium too quickly so the wet/dry cycle will be tough to maintain.
I can't stress the passive intake enough. I was very much of the opinion that I was going to have 1 intake and 1 exhaust fan but some very good people here pointed me in the right direction before I started building. You can see the thread and comments in my profile. (Hoping I can pass along the knowledge I gained. The people on this subreddit are awesome and helped me immensely.) I was very pleasantly surprised by the pvc elbows. They're only about 80 cents each and since I had already ordered 2 fans I made a 2nd bucket. Also, if odor control is important to you then you'll want to maintain negative pressure in your bucket. Intake fans can lead to positive pressure and air leak whereas passive will guarantee negative pressure. Just Google it if you haven't read about it yet.

I'd recommend getting a temp/humidity weather monitor and try your bucket with 1 fan first. You can always install a 2nd if needed. It's important to check temp/humidity with your pot and medium in the bucket...I found its much different than an empty bucket. Something like this...

I found cheap bricks of coco at Petsmart. It's also used for bedding/substrate in reptile terrariums. Roughly 6 bucks for 8 quarts...add about 30% perlite or vermiculite and you can easily fill a 2-3 gallon pot.

Three 5-gallon buckets and one lid (Ace Hardware has white ones for $4, if you don't want orange or blue from HD or Lowe's.) All three cost $12-13.

THIS POWER SUPPLY, the Supernight LED Charger. It is $20.99. You will also need a power cord for it, which I recommend just going to literally ANY thrift store and picking out a nice three-pronged power cord. I'm fairly certain that any three-pronged power cord will work, so if you have one you're not using at home, you can use that.

THIS LED GROW LIGHT, which is 300w and cost $50.99.

TWO of these PC fans. Total cost $10.04.

I bought one of this black duct tape, one of this foil tape (although I recommend buying two, as I ran out with my first roll and had to buy another from the store), and also some double-sided tape, because, if your LED strip is like mine, the adhesive backing is almost nonexistent and the tape becomes necessary.

Oh, and good-quality velcro adhesive patches!

You will also need a power drill and a sturdy box cutter.



I started by taping the entire interior of one bucket with the foil tape, save for the bottom portion where the soil goes. Then I covered the outside with the black tape. Next I drilled holes in the bottom for drainage.

Then I took two of the other buckets and used a ruler's width to mark a cut line right below the lip of each bucket to create spacers. The process of cutting the plastic buckets was definitely the worst part of the process, especially since I didn't have a great cutter, so if you're getting a new one, don't be too cheap. I got this one and it's blade locking function no longer works after this project, so be advised. I lined the spacers with foil tape.

Using the remains of one of the other buckets, I trimmed more of the bucket down so that it's now only the bottom and stands 5" tall. I found some random large screws in my toolbox and drilled them around the circumference, which allows the rest of the bucket to be easily lifted off of the drain pan.

I then drew a circle about 1 cm in from the lip of the lid and cut that out. The light fits perfectly on it. There is lots of light escape at the rim, but it looks pretty cool, so I don't mind it for now.

For the power supply, I cut off the female end of the three-pronged cord I got from Arc Thrift and stripped the wires down a bit. There were three wires inside, green (ground), white (neutral), and black (live), which I then connected to driver. I was certain to unplug during any wire-play and I hope everyone else is, too.

The sidelights were sort of a struggle. I used a scrap of the buckets, like maybe 4-5 inches of bucket from about half-way down to a quarter, so not much. I then lined the inside with the double-sided tape, cutting strips, in an effort to conserve tape, which feels very stable. I drilled a hole and fed the cable through, then determined the best spot to drill a hole on the exterior bucket. It's about at the center of the bucket, or in my case, 13 cm down from the lip. Finally, I fed the LED cable through the exterior hole and the lights were basically in place, where it would sit right above the soil.

I didn't want to have to extend any cords, so I found an ideal spot to place the driver on the exterior so that all cables (LED strip, both fans) could reach their appropriate ports. I fixed the velcro onto the bucket and the driver and tidied the wires with some more duct tape.

Finally, I sealed the edges of both fans, inside and outside, with their respective tapes.


I'm pretty sure that's everything I've done to this point, but if I think of anything else, I'll add it. I'm likely going to black-out the spacers to reduce light leak.

It depends on the look you want to go for. My room started off looking a lot like yours with the beige on beige carpet and walls, minus the ummm..... unique drape. ;) I repainted and added some chair railing but that may be more than what you want to do.

LED lights are an easy, inexpensive addition. They allow you to change the entire look of the room at a moments notice and when you don't want them, turn them off. The Arcade1up Pacman and Galaga ship lights are fantastic for the price, especially if you find them on clearance (I got them for $8 each) just be prepared to run some mini usb wires for power to them and they eat batteries fast. Their light up Marques they recently released are also pretty cool but at $60 each, there may be better options.

Off the top of my head, $500 sounds like much too little for all of what you are asking for, unfortunately. $500 can definitely get you a decent enough PC but it probably won't have everything you want; especially regarding fancy lighting and low noise levels. If you're planning on buying everything new, then a half-decent monitor and Windows alone will cost you $150 or more, leaving $350 for the actual PC- sure you can get an ok pc for that much, but it definitely won't be running any games on high settings even at 1080p.

This is what I could come up with for about $506 on pcpartpicker. It's a fairly decent system, but definitely not the prettiest. I also didn't include an operating system (Windows license) because a legitimate license costs about 20% of your whole budget. You can install and use Windows without a license with some restrictions (eg a watermark) until you can save up some money to buy a license.

I would suggest that you don't focus on the aesthetics of the build right now with your budget, and instead, upgrade later. The case I included has a tempered glass side so the insides are nice and visible. When you can save up some more cash, you could buy an inexpensive LED strip and stick that inside your case to immediately upgrade your style by +10. Alternatively you could get an nzxt hue lighting system which is designed to be put inside your case and can be controlled by your PC but that's much more expensive. The advantage of the latter solution is you can also add led fans and other accessories later.

Their own flashlight that can go around their neck. I use these and put a longer, breakaway lanyard on it. Teach them how to use it and what to do if they get lost.

Bucket, shovel, scavenger hunt with animal and plant identification, crayons and paper and do transfers over leaves and stems, smores, their own sleeping bag, pillow and blankie/stuffie from home, refillable water bottle. Their own air mattress or sleeping mat is awesome too. You can set it right next to theirs.

If the campground has paved roads, a scooter or bike is nice for them to have. Also look to see if there are any geocaches for kids around the campsite or start one (take a toy, leave a toy). I stock up on Dollar Store items.

Squirt gun, LEGO, dominoes, crazy 8's or other cards for Go Fish, and lots of kid friendly snacks.

You can cook small pizzas in a frying pan adding a lid for final cheese melt or on a grill with foil over it. Bring dough, premade sauce and cheese to make their own pizza.

Sunscreen, benedryl gel for bug bites and bug spray. A hat. Sweats, more clothes than you think you need, gloves and slippers. I always bring rubber soled slippers camping. It's great to get out of your hiking boots or tennis shoes and easy to slip on for late night potty trips.

Get solar garden lights ($1 Walmart or Dollar Store) and place all around camp. I also get these lights to clip on the zippers of the tent and their jackets. I leave them on all night. It helps find the zipper for middle of the night bathroom trips for me and helps me find the kid in the dark as well as giving them security.

Have them help make meals and put drinks and snacks in their own cooler so it doesn't spoil main food. I also bring cup a noodles, spaghetti o's, and mac and cheese for easy meals.

Help them find their own hiking stick and bring sandpaper so they can smooth it. Teach them how to properly use a buck knife, clean up after themselves and others, build a fire.

Wet wipes/baby wipes. They're invaluable for cleaning up kids.

Swiffer's are pretty great for cleaning floors and they aren't expensive. Also get a small vacuum for any carpeting. If you like coffee, definitely get a Keurig. If you're in an area that has cold winters, a comforter for your bed will be important (there are some really cute ones at Target). For when it's warmer out, having a small fan will help the air in your room circulate better. As for LED light strips, this one from Amazon worked really well for me.

The 3820 overclocks and there's actually plenty of reading available. It also provides 40 PCI Express lanes instead of 16, so you don't run out of GPU bandwidth if you add a second card.

This is the version with out the blue LED, and it's currently $125 from Newegg, after a $10 rebate. You can buy that and add some blue lights for like ten bucks. Either that stick or a flexible cable.

As for the fan, maybe I can put three 230mm fans and a 140mm in perspective. My current case is a Level 10 GT. I'm not fancy, I just got it secondhand. The point is that it has three 200mm fans and a 140mm fan in pretty much the same layout, and these are my idle temperatures with a Phanteks TC14PE. Under load, the CPU doesn't crack 60 C (though I'm not overclocking it at the moment). GPU stays in the low 60s. It's an ASUS DC2T (also secondhand), but that's still pretty nice.

There isn't really room for improvement at this point, at least with air. Adding another fan would just increase the noise level.

For my 75" TV, I needed the original starter kit plus 3 extensions. Pretty expensive but I got everything for 50% retail.

I arranged them about 2 inches in from the edge of the tv all around the backside of the TV. They are secured using command strips hooks.

Makes a huge difference in perceived picture quality. Contrast does indeed look significantly better and I no longer notice inconsistencies in backlighting during dark scenes.

I bought this USB->Serial adaptor to hook my computer up to the H801 to flash it.
I would not recommend it though.
The H801 requires 3v to flash, by default, this adaptor is 5v. I had to cut a jumper wire on the back of the board and solder across the terminals of another to convert it to 3v. If you aren't afraid of cutting/soldering jumpers though, its pretty straight forward, and I know it works.

  I ran two strips off each power supply, total of 4 strips, one running underneath each beam crossing my garage ceiling in a ~20'x20' space. I'm very happy with the results. Here's a pic shortly after I got them up and running:

These light up my shop completely, and because light is coming from everywhere, there is very little in the way of shadowing. Also, I can move big pieces of wood around in the shop, and not worry about bashing light fixtures and breaking them, and it was ~$125 or so for all of the bits (the power supplies were the most expensive bit). They're pretty much ideal as far as I'm concerned.

You may be able to shop around a bit but this is the setup I used to get it going. The Bed lights are pretty easy to setup they have a peel off sticky part so you can tape them right onto your bed and the hue lights are cool cause you can control them from Alexa and have her change colors and also change lights based on the music and an app on your phone. I jokingly programmed my Alexa to dim the lights and play Red Red Wine when I say, “Alexa, we have company” Hope this helps!

There are tons of different ways to accomplish this.. But I'd say by far the easiest way for you to do what you need to do without hassle is buying something like this. It has color changing leds but if you don't like that I'm sure you can find other ~5v RGB strips.

This is ideal since the strip is already designed to accept 5v via USB and that's much easier to accomplish via batteries than a usual 12v or 120v strip for example. You could probably power the strip via 3 AA batteries in series, costing you the price of a battery holder. No need for larger series of cells or any kind of extra driver for the leds.

I don't have a pic of my setup but it looks similar to this. I like it when watching SDR content, but when I'm watching HDR I'll unplug the light strip. It helps illuminate the room when we are hanging out, but doesn't produce any strong points of glare because the light is behind the TV

I'm using a usb LED light strip I got on amazon. I don't remember the specific one I have, but something like this would do. If you don't want the light splashing around the screen and just want an indicator light you could get something like this that has a tiny amount of LEDs on it and get a USB extension cable and route it to wherever you would like just as a simple indicator light.

I have bought a number of them on Amazon over the last few years, and currently have these ones around the computer monitors, an iMac, and around two TV's around the house. I think these are fantastic. I used a single strand for around all three monitors, and the 32" up top, and have a shorter strip running along the edge of the desk, on it's own circuit, so it can change to a different color if I want it too.

Hey everyone, I posted this thread last week and got input from you all about what you want in your work/battle station.

Here is a summary of what everyone suggested and what I did to try to solve their problem.

For the sake of shipping and to save money if you already have a desk, I designed it to mount onto an existing model of IKEA desk that's very common, decent quality and not very expensive.

I got these on sale for about $20 and they are amazing. Its 3M tape, so just wipe down the wall where you will stick them and they will hold fine. Super easy to take down, cheap, dimmable, color changing, comes with remote, and you can daisy chain them with a bit of research and time. Easiest and cheapest lighting solution I've found - have them in damn near every room hidden on top of my crown molding. I just add some velcro to the remotes and attach them to door frames.

Each LED on a strip of WS2812 can be addressed independently. It's probably, uhhh, a bit more effort than you're willing put in unless you're already programing microcontrollers on the regular.

You could buy the kit he uses on that trailer, I guess, but you're going to want to shorten those 13 foot long leads. It's super dim at 18 leds a meter.

If you drop the "multiple colors at the same time" requirement you can pick up 5 meters of waterproof strip, a controller, and a remote for like $20-25 on Amazon. They won't respond to sound like the above kit.

30led/m black strip. 60leds/m white strip. (it's cheaper than the 30led/m stuff but don't try and chain a second 5m reel off the controller). Extra connectors, jumpers, etc show up in the "also purchased box." You'll want to seal connections with some "self-fusing silicone tape." You can find it at hardware stores or Amazon.

What camera do you use? And what type of leds? I used a regular iPhone camera and these were my leds. I’m no photographer but my best guess is the lights have a low frequency.

You can't tell from the GIF, but I ran the LED strip twice along the underside of the top of the desk. This helped make it a bit brighter. After that I still had a bunch of LED tape left so I rolled it up and hung it off the back of my computer monitor. This added a lot of glow to the back wall which I thought looked pretty nice.

Cheap, really easy to see (the white one is super bright) and should make it a lot easier to deal with.

I don't know of any, but another good option is a night walk kit!

Awesome. Okay so just to clarify (sorry), I know I could use the hand controller provided with these lights, but if I got the H801 controller, I could change the lights with an app on my phone for now. Is this correct? Then going forward I could get this controller to hook up to Smartthings.

I have 3 zones total, the wall art, and 2 sets of cabinets I would want to light. Would I need 3 of these controllers, one for each run of LED lights? And then I would need to use the app to turn on each run individually?

If you recommend a different H801 controller would you be able to link that to me?

I personally am a fan of the Hue's simply because I have had friends install some of the cheap ones and they are just junk in the long run. Plus the Hue app is way better than almost all of the competition out there. The Hue lights are still on sale from black friday at Amazon and Best buy.

How long? RGB (white is blueish) or RGBW (extra white LED)?

This seems to be the same model I used for a project (giant lamp). Worked perfectly fine. Afaik if you got yourself another controller it'd respond to the same remote.

You can cut the stripes as you see fit and reconnect them. You'd need something like this for easy connection when you cut it up. As an extension cable you can use whatever you like as long as it provides 5 wires.

For LED lightbars you can get them anywhere really.

I recently (yesterday) bought this.

It's a 1 meter of RGB 5050 LED, and I plan on running it with a external battery pack for some project that requires being mobile.

They have ones with AC adapters, really just google something to the extent of 5050 LED strip, RGB if you want to change colours, or just get white or whatever colour you want/need to save money. 5050 is the size of the LED, there are smaller ones as well.

If you don't trust buying from some Chinese company you can ebay it, or look at your local brick and mortar stores. I know Costco sells Sylvania Mosaic ones, and of course Amazon sells it.

Youtube video search something like sylvania mosaic review to get the general gist of what it is.

I mean the quality might not be there, but if you go thru Costco or Amazon their return policies are pretty good, and it's not $200, it's like $30.

First and foremost, this is 5m of lights and half the price.

You can buy 5 meters of pure white for about $8, and if it's for cabinets why would you wan't anything but white? If you want RGB,

You can cut the strips to your own desired length/luminosity.

12VDC power supplies are in abundance and cheap.

If you don't need a remote, any cheap switch would turn them on and off, or better yet, use hall effects to turn the lights on if cabinet door is opened. Why would I want a remote for cabinet lights? Ambient light sensor if anything, so it works like a night light.

Sorry if I'm shitting all over this, I just laugh every time I see some overly priced LED lights. It works though, because people like lights. I just wish people knew how much they were over paying.

The safest thing is a properly-sized resistor on the 5V rail. If you don't do that, the PSU may appear to run fine without it initially and then randomly shut down, reset, etc., potentially ruining prints. You need to keep drawing 1-2 amps at 5V to keep things happy. If you really want ideas for things to put on 5V that are actually useful:

Nice work. Does the ceiling in the tile chamber get too hot? Maybe you don't run the candles all the time.

One thing, pretty cheap as well. Think about trying this. They'll help your eyes if you have the lights on or the candles going.

Love the color on the wall and the white floor...

I used these Dioder Lights from IKEA on the front. They're wired, and have the ability to change color too which is really nice. I kinda think that these would have come out a lot brighter, but im for the most part happy with that i've got.

On the back, I rigged these LED strips. They're also wired, and once you get the right materials, really easy to learn. The only difficult thing is that these in particular had a waterproof coating on them that made it impossible to connect together without peeling the waterproof coating entirely off where the two cut strips connected, but it looks great now, so it doesn't matter TOO much now.

The 60 cm goes from partly up the rear to the front on the bottom. The 30cm is next to the radiator at the top. Now for the RGB controller I am not using the one in the kit. I mainly bought the kit to get a SATA to barrel connector but it had some other useful wires too. I am using a SUPERNIGHT IR Remote Controller as it allows for your own preset colors. If you go this route you need to make sure to change I believe the red and blue wires as they are reversed on the CableMod strip. They included short extensions with my kit so I reversed them on that.

My previous build had just SUPERNIGHT RGB LEDs and I must say the CableMod ones are much better. I want to find out a way to get the CPU area lit without seeing the RGB strips.

So I had to get creative for the back of the monitors as only one of them has a usb port, and I wanted to maintain the freedom of movement the monitor mount allowed, all while still remaining in my budget. I had to find a self contained, USB powered set, with cabling long enough to make it to the left monitor and still be cable-managed nicely. After some research I found a set that works well enough. When prime day came I bought it at a bit of a discount to keep it as cheap as possible. The desk lighting I found on this subreddit on another post.

Yes, you will need a power supply and a controller of some kind (similar to what came with the original kit).

I searched Amazon with the term "LED strip controller" and found this which should work fine . It's even the same brand as what you have (not that it's critical to do that)

I recently added LED lighting to my closet and gun-cabinet using these:

In the closet I added a motion sensor (this one)
and a power adapter for 120v to 12v. Has tons of light and it's awesome having it be motion activated.

In the gun cabinet I used the same style LED strip, but am running it off of a battery (this one) and a toggle switch.

I could easily run another motion sensor in the cabinet though, that might work out better for your scenario. If you have the room for the battery you can just secure it with some double-sided tape, add the motion sensor and have it run an entire strip of the LEDs (it'll be very bright), though you might only need a few sections of LED.

I actually just bought this LED strip off of Amazon. It isn't anything spectacular, but it fit my needs length wise and color. I only really wanted white in the beginning anyway. I just have it plugged into my motherboard with one of these. It works well and was much cheaper.

As far as the desk lights go, I probably can't help you too much, but it's likely just an LED strip under the desk or along the back of it.

As for the computer lights. To make it easy for you, some cases have LED's built into them that you can control like this one here it's not the exact same as OP's but somewhat similar. To get one similar to OP's my guess is it's this case here, but it doesn't have LED's built in so you'd have to buy yourself some case LED strips if you find yourself savvy enough for it.

As for the components, you can easily find components that light up and are controllable such as this RAM. Most higher end GPU's have controllable LED's, you can research the brands that might. I know my EVGA brand Nvidia cards do. The light up CPU heatsink looks to be a hybrid cooler similar to this one which has controllable LED's.

After you have all that stuff, it's a matter of just installing the LED controller software for each and picking blue/pink hue's for them.

Its just a random 6ft one I got on amazon, super bright and flexes nicely.

Not OP, but if you are looking for computer lighting the HUE+ is a great option for inside you computer, and for outside the computer there any many different options. I'm using some Sylvania Mosaic, which are nice but there are plenty of different options out there.

What is your thought on neutral white versus warm white? Looking at the two of them via this I think that neutral white is a better white.

Assuming I'm calculating right, these strips are 60 lights/meter and that's only like 4.88 watts/meter so the size of the PSU should not matter at all, just any 12v will be enough to supply it.

Yes, but the specifics of that will depend on which controller you buy. I'm actually doing something almost identical- hooking the lights up to a timer.

When power is restored, they resume whatever setting and brightness last used.

Thank you very much! The lighting is actually a sort of photography trick, as it's just color-cycling lights on the back of my TV combine with a panoramic photo from my phone. It just worked out that it gave it that rainbow effect.

It’s just one of those LED rope lights, I got of amazon. I cut it to the size of the stand, then sticked it to the back of the stand and boom! Lights. It’s a nice touch if you don’t want a background. It has a remote with a bunch of colors and modes. I just thought this was the nicest!

I use a USB lightstrip inside my case and use a USB A to USB Motherboard 4-Pin Header to connect it. All for under $15. The led strip has a control to set color and mode (blink, color cycle, etc). Cheap and effective solution for case lighting. I really didn't want to add molex connectors to my PSU so this was the best solution. Just to note, the LEDs will stay on if connected to the USB header. If you want it to turn off when computer is off, you may need to set USB power in your BIOS. I keep it on off the hell of it, it looks cool just cycling colors.

I see that you're planning to use a USB power pack + the Black Diamond Revolt. I must say that I tried this out and was highly disappointed by the brightness of the headlamp with rechargeable batteries. It was only semi-bright at full charge, and then you can see them dimming down to nothing within just a few hours.

I ultimately opted for a mini usb clip light (these can get up to 45 lumens and is rechargeable!), which was much more reliable than the revolt IMHO. And then I brought this as a backup light, which clips right into your power pack and weighs (I hate this phrase but in this case it's true), next to nothing.

Also I personally feel that with all the options available for lightweight USB based lights, there's no need for the tent with the built-in lights. It would save money and flexibility to get a normal tent and then bring your own little USB strip like this.

The first link in my comment comes with the control box and 3 LED strips. You can buy extra LED strips if you want but you might not need to, they're really bright. You could always buy extra strips later if you think you need them.

Had a buddy line the top of their living room with them. Instantly able to change the color of the room. Tricolor strobing is amazing, and seven color fade can make any space way more interesting. Some people can't deal with their harshness though.

These are really nice because there's an app that controls all the lights as well as a button that attaches to it. I have my button under my desk with some double sided tape.

I know I'm not really answering your question here... but we just installed 5 more foot of cabinet space and my wife wanted some under cabinet lighting. I looked on Amazon and most of the stuff was pretty expensive.

I opted instead to do LED strip lighting and ordered 32' of it + transformer + dimmer for the same price as 24" of any of the other solutions. The pluses are:

• LED strips can be cut into 2" sections so you can cut it to length (soldering is required but very minor and simple)
  
• The strips have sticky back so you can stick it right under the counter. I used some glue to help some parts stay but not too necessary.
  
• Very low voltage and power consumption.

The ones behind the desk (I used a different power supply than the one included, and actually had these lights before I got my pc quite a while ago. Very good purchase.)

The ones behind the monitor (Not nearly as happy with these ones. They seem overpriced, and the colors aren’t very accurate. The white is plain awful, and the remote is way limited compared to the other strip. But the ease of use and “auto off while pc sleeps” is really nice, as well as the power coming directly off the monitor. They aren’t as bright either, but that’s due to power limits.)

The head lamp is a good idea! My dog has a reflective collar when it's not too dark out yet, an LED collar when it's dark, and a reflective leash. There are also LED lights you can attach to a regular collar and/or yourself and/or your leash that are pretty cheap.

The SMD5050 variety would work, but are less efficient.

The larger chipsizes such as the SMD7020 draw too much power and get quite warm, increasing difficulty in the heat management department as well as probably being just a tad too bright to be positioned so close to the plant canopy.

Yeah! I did not design the camera mount but here is the original and here is a remix which can house different cameras. Print whichever fits the hardware you have on-hand.

The LEDs are actually just a cheap 2m long USB powered strip I got on amazon. This is the exact one you see in my pictures.

You have 3 choices in LEDs, traditional PWM 12V based which I think you're better off buying from amazon.com because they have tons of kits. This for example, also note that these strips are non-addressable AKA no unique color per LED.

WS2812B/WS2813 are the common choice for addressable LED strips. You can get 1m/60 LEDs<$10 from ebay, but again amazon has options. (Strip) and (controller).

Then there's the APA102 an addressable RGB LED which you don't want because they're way more expensive.

I've bought all 3 kinds and every WS2812B (1m/30 and rings I've bought worked fine. I've yet to try the APA102 and the traditional 12V RGB strip.

I haven't had any problems with the non-waterproof strips. I usually take my plants out of their containers to water, so I haven't worried about them. However, if I were to buy more side lighting I would get more of these warm white 5630 waterproof strips. Their spectrum is a little cooler than the 7020s and they seem somewhat brighter as well.

Have you taken a look at the NZXT 2 meter (also comes in 1 meter) LED strips? They come in different colors, are pretty inexpensive, and have brightness and power controls.

Sure! Quick summary: it's clear 2" acrylic tube with paper on the inside to diffuse the light, light strip in the tubes is this, fire at the bottom is these with fabric glued around them. The thrust structure, interstage, nose cones, fairing, legs, raceways, and gridfins are all 3D printed out of black or clear PLA. All the wiring for the light strip runs up wires in the raceways and then down through the tubes

Do yourself a favor and use a strip designed for 5V operation instead. Something like this or this. That way you can use it in conjunction with a rechargeable USB power bank. They also make USB inline switches if you need one.

The brand i got was LDH. Here Most of them are very similar. I think cablemods is very overpriced but, I hear they're good. I already had a SATA 12 power adapter so you may want to find a kit that has one of those.

You can always get a cheap set of LED strips to stick inside your PC that come with a remote that allows you to pick between 15 or so colors. If you go with that route id recommend going with black/white for all of the hardware aka the stuff you cant change the color of since all white or all black can mesh well with any color

Get something like this and stick it on the back of your desk. Assuming its against the wall it'll illuminate the back really well. You could continue it underneath your desk for an underglow effect as well.

The setup I have patiently waiting to be installed uses these flexible, trimmable LED strips from Amazon. I was facing basically the same issues as you, so I'll end up mounting the LEDs along the top and entire length of both sides of the door frame. At the junctions between strips and corners, you can use the connectors sold in multi-packs.

I chose my power supply wattage based on this PDF from a manufacturer. Some supplies are sold with an AC cord and plug, and some are available with a hardwire option.

Rather than a motion sensor, I opted to use a jamb switch I picked up from Lowes. Just another option to consider.

I zip tie the extra wire of the lights to the battery pack. Then I use that industrial adhesive to stick it to the board. It works really well, I've never had anything fall off using that stuff. I take some gaff tape and put it over all of the components. For the light strips themself, I used the adhesive they have on them to stick to the bottom. That's holding up really well. For the side ones I use a glue gun to stick them on. Those ones require a little fixing up every month or so, banging the board around will unglue them over time. The portable battery for these don't make any noise. It lasts a long time running two strips before needing recharged.

I bought this unit on cyber Monday for $10, it turns on and off with the TV and is pretty convenient.

The screen I purchased came already packaged with the LED kit. All I had to do was stick em on. They look almost identical to this set.

I had to modify the power connector so I could plug it into a PC power supply.

I have both of these. The main difference is that the first one is multi-color. Also, having USB power is better than Ikea's AC power since you can plug it into your TV's USB outlet and then the lights will turn on with your TV.

This particular one does use a setup that would need an outlet, but I've seen some DIY setups that create a hard-wired solution. I don't know the complexity of it though, unfortunately. Also, when you say it doesn't have a convenient connection to one another, how inconvenient is it? Could a small drill solve this issue or is there actually open space between each location? Or maybe it's metal or glass?

I went and added these different LED strip lights which are powered by the USB on the speaker amp this morning and this set didn't cause the buzz. The radio dial now changes colors like an old jukebox.

Marineland makes a pretty small LED light Here is a link, you would just need to figure out a way to rig it in place in the hood. If you're not growing any plants you could get some of those stick on LED strips like these for example and place them in the hood.

put monitors on one side, tower on the other. Or put the monitors on one side, tower in the middle, and controllers/headset/mic/etc. on the other side. I'm using these to hold power strips, it's only going to work for the long skinny ones though. IKEA has one that can hold a wider variety of sizes. Based on the shadow and graininess of the pic I am guessing you only have a ceiling light? You could add a lamp on one side and one of these on the other. If you want to continue with the green color scheme, you could get one of these orb things and an rgb led strip

Should be the same for your Strix. Just cut the length you need and use the pre-soldered connector on the led strip end to the provided ASUS cable adapter.

You can also solder a new connector on the freshly cut end of the rest of the unused strip for more in the future.

Tbh, I don't recommend going that route even if you are unless you get a good deal.

NZXT makes some decent LED strip kits. The NZXT Hue fits in a 5.25 bay, runs off SATA power and can be set to any RGB color. If you just want one color, you can get one of the NZXT sleeved light kits; these fit into an empty expansion port on the back and run off Molex power.

About $3 more on Amazon, for a longer length (almost 2x long), including prime delivery.

That should be all you need. I took the controller board out of the box, desoldered the plug for lights and power, soldered 2 small wires for power and ran them right to the barrel plug on the NES. The screen doesn't sit 100% flush with my wall. There was literally just enough room for the led strip that I ran around the velvet on the back side. At first I had stuck it on the metal portion, but this causes a lot of light to bleed into the screen so I moved it onto the velvet.

I'd say there was about 1/8th of an inch gap.

Addressable LEDs (WS2xxx, NeoPixel, etc) will not work at all with Hue unless you build some sort of controller which intercepts the signal between a Hue-compatible controller and the strip. These LEDs work completely differently.

RGB LED = These are the ones used with Hue strips. Color is controlled per strip and individual lights can not be controlled. A voltage signal is sent giving power to each red, blue or green (white if its RGBW). Brightness combinations create colors.

Addressable LED = Data is sent to control each LED individually via code. Some strips have just a data pin, some of the ones from Adafruit have a data and clock pin. These have constant voltage from the 5v line and send signals to change color per-led.

Aside from the way these strips behave, they also use different voltages. Hue strips, and generic SMD5050 strips, use 12v. Most of the addressable strips are 12v. You will ruin a 5v strip if you shoot 12v through it.

Now, you can buy any generic SMD5050 led strip and connect it to a Hue-compatible controller. I've done that with these and it works fine, though had to solder the connections since the green and blue were backwards on the pins.

tl;dr Addressable LEDs will not work with the Hue system.
