I'll just post in here what everything is. I'm very sentimental so I like to buy one thing and use it forever. The pens were the hardest thing to find in terms of what I liked, but this is the stuff I use everyday and love to death.
The leather case is from Amazon. Search Rustic leather brown pen case. It has some flaws, mainly the slots are too tight and the stitching doesn't go all the way to the bottom, but I love it. Looks great and was like
$15$25^^woops with Prime. Here is a direct link to it.The VPs are both yellow gold, fine nibs. The grey has Pilot Namiki black cartridges in it, the black has Pilot Ichuzika dark brown in it. The brown is my top ink, looks amazing on almost all types of paper. The VP is my favorite pen ever made, though the grey runs a bit much for a fine nib. I love these pens, I have no intention to buy another anytime soon.
The pencil is a Kerry and has a pen-like cap that still works like a mech. The lead is a 0.5 mm. Awesome pencil. My dad gave it to me and I love it so much.
The highlighters are from Japan and have clear nibs so I can see as I highlight. I'm in law school and go through a hell of a lot of highlighters, so these are my favorite. I couldn't give you a brand, I get these locally. These are almost exactly the same thing.
Anyway, that's my stuff. I'm very passionate about my stuff, so I hope you like my EDC as much as I do.
A good set of pens is really fun for creative types. Pentel SignPens (either these or these) are fantastic. Sakura and Stabilo make great ones as well. I like previously offered highlighter ideas and love my new see-through ones that I linked there. Also what about a set of sketch pencils?
What about some paracord and accessories for making guinea pig leashes? There are tons of sites that tell how to make them, she might be into it.
I also just recently got a little more into makeup and found an AMAZING set of cheap makeup brushes as a starter set - These and I'm actually getting them for my 18 yo niece for Christmas.
Best of luck!
Since no one else has jumped in, surprisingly, let me go ham with suggestions. I also have incredibly small writing so I know the need to have the proper supplies.
Kurotoga
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004OHNTVC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_p.O2Cb0KYCQXX
This is the best pencil on the market for languages that use characters like Kanji. The main selling point is how it sharpens the tip every time so you don't get those blurry lines when the tip goes dull. I have it in a 0.5, and I'm able to write incredibly small still. I would suggest getting the recommended lead with diamond tips if you have the tendency to break lead. I'v been on the same pack for 3 years and have only replaced the lead 2 times even with constant writing.
Uni-ball Signo UM-151
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003FXWGWE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_BdP2CbQBJ90ZE
This is my go to pen for everything. It's the most amazing thing and a total workhorse. Even though it's 0.38, I still find it easy to write tiny without any problems. You have to try to see why everybody loves and recommends them.
Zebra Sarasa Gel Pens
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004NRB2LM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_hgP2CbN7S8HWD
I use these when I feel like making my notes more colorful. They are amazing although some people complain about the scratchiness on paper. I use a 下敷き or pencil board so I don't feel as much. Again, if you are a heavy handed writer, I suggest doing the same because those tips are quite sharp.
Copic Multiliners
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002UCUGSM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_cmP2CbG89ADE3
This is a bit of an expensive pen, but the main draw of these is that the nibs, and etc. are replaceable so they are eco friendly. The other selling point is the ink which does not bleed even when you use highlighters. The pens mentioned above will so you'll have to pre-highlight or underline. With this pen, you can just write and then highlight without worrying about smudging. I have the 0.5,0.3,and 0.1 because I use these for inking so choose the size you feel most comfortable with.
Zebra Mildliners
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072QXQHFC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7iP2Cb1BBQY0C
I know you didn't ask about highlighters, but if you're going down this rabbit hole, I might as well take you all the way. These are my favorite highlighters as they're so very soothing to the eye. I always feel that they add an extra level of class and sophistication, not to mention whimsy, to even the most basic lecture notes.
I hope this was helpful. I have more suggestions for writing supplies, but I'll comment again if you want to hear about those. I will warn you that they are pricey although I can't imagine my life without. Good luck and cheers!
Not at all. It smears the writing a bit as it erases, then once you rub it enough, it turns completely clear/invisible.
I use these pens all day, every day and they have stood the test so far. I make a ton of mistakes usually when writing so these are a godsend.
10 Pack, retractable
12-color marker set
Highlighters + Eraser
And to top it off, my favorite: the microwavable 'smart notepad'.
Again, the ink turns clear at 140°, so this notebook allows you to write notes in the notebook with the Frixion pens/markers/highlighters and "reset" it by microwaving it for a few seconds. Best part is, you can scan the pages into perfect PDFs with their app. And you can mark the page to tell it where to save it to (email, Google Drive, Dropbox, local save, etc.) It finally started to break my habit of taking notes and never going back to them with this a couple months ago. I'm super psyched on them and I just wanna spread the gospel of Frixion 😃
Focus? Sounds fake to me...
Nah, I'll quit jerkin' around. I find it very hard to concentrate on reading as well, I find it easier on a screen rather than a physical page, but I seem to skip all over the page, read words in the wrong order and start at the end of sentences and then go to the start no matter what it is I'm looking at. Very annoying.
The car on ice analogy is a really good one, I've never been able to put that into words.
Audiobooks sound like they'd be really helpful! If there's a letter or something that I need to read myself, though, I sometimes put a scrap of paper, a ruler, or a bookmark underneath the line I have to focus on so I have to read that before moving on. That or even running your finger along the line in time with yourself reading the words. It might feel unnatural at first but if it helps, it helps!
There are even cheap plastic things that rather have a window cutout or a clear highlighted strip to help focus on the line if that's helpful too, I found some here :)
Here you go.
These are god tier pens. It's like the Sharpie fine-tips and Staedtler (sp?) triplus but don't leak as much, and because they're not ballpoint they don't scratch at paper. They come in a million colours, which can be helpful but maybe not that good for an engineer who likes dark things, but they come in three packs of a colour and 10packs. Check eBay as well.
If your giftee is in the US, that's why they've never tried these - they don't sell them in North America for some reason. It's like a closely guarded secret by the rest of the world hahaha.
My thoughts on some of these things:
This is the funniest prank I've ever seen. Sorry if anyone already posted these items, I'm too tired to check -
pink is the new black!
I get on well with Waterman Florida Blue. However, have you thought about using a different highlighter? Have you tried the Stadtler TextSurfer Gel 264 it's pretty much any fountain pen ink friendly providing the ink has dried on the page first. It's like a wax gel that you roll on rather than an ink highlighter and comes in yellow, pink and orange. Amazon US sell them for $4. They are really good highlighters for fountain pen inks.
Gel pens are wonderful for decorating!! I often use them for different headers in my weekly layouts. I am a stationary addict so I have all sorts of different pens. The Tombows are a bit on the pricier side, but the thick lines could totally be done with highlighter - in fact something like these or the Zebra Mildliners could probably do the same thing. The only difference is the Tombows are water based, whereas highlighters tend to be alcohol based so the risk of bleed through is there but if you use a light hand you should be fine!
I have this issue and I was a literature and writing major.
Are you in a 4 year school or in a community college?
You need highlighters of many colors. I would get something like this. You won't be messing with a ton of highlighters. You have 1.
Go through your questions. Say you are reading about Dante and they ask, "Of which Florentine political party was Farinata a leader?" The important parts of that question are "political party" and "Farinata". Highlight those in a color.
Go through your other questions and highlight pertinent information. Just the keywords. At the top of the text write down 1. political party Farinata. 2. xxxxx etc
To answer it, you just need to scan. Don't worry about reading for the test. Just scan the entire article starting at the beginning for Farinata. Prof's usually write tests in the order found in the text.
For my reading. I would use Cornell Notes. For nonfiction it was easy. Every chapter was a sheet. Every section was a bold section. I'd pick 2 or 3 points from each section and write it down. When I was done, I'd write a summary and some key questions. I'd approach it section by section. I wouldn't approach it as a whole chapter because it overwhelmed me too much. For fiction, I'd first go online and find a summary of each chapter so it was broken down for me. I would then do the Cornell Notes again. I would write down the characters in the book and write down major things they did. Then I would write down major plot changes, any literary devices, etc. I would then write down important questions and summary. (When I had my Shakespeare class, I watched the old school BBC version and then read the play so I could actually understand what the hell what was going on.) But remember, reading a summary of a text online, is not a substitution for reading the actual text.
When it came time for tests, I'd copy my notes. I'd put all the summaries in order on one page. I'd write out all the questions to go over.
I know this seems like a lot. Trust me. This system took me a lot of time. I was able to cut it down a lot as time went on with my version of shorthand. I sometimes had 200-300 pages of reading a week. I did have accommodations to have audio books, but it didn't help. I found that I worked better if I listened to music and either sat in a coffee house or in the library at school.
I had accommodations in college. I had time and a half for tests. Which helped a lot. I also got to type all my essays instead of handwriting them.
Good school supplies are ones that last a long time or are of a higher quality then the cheapest alternative. I have looked at local stores and amazon. I simply do not have the money this year/parents willing to splurge for the supplies that last and are good. My problem most the time is two or 3 good pens can last me all year or I'll go through 3x 20 packs of cheap pens.
For example if I could get my dream school supplies this year (not that it will ever happen)
What I will end up getting right now are cheap binders and notebooks, the cheapest lead I can find and cheap pens.
Sorry for typing such a long thing!
Berol highlighters may not be what was used in the pic, but it's such a beautiful, bright, crisp, neon yellow highlighter line that almost anything else pales in comparison. Try them out!
Yes!!!! Best list, ever! Let me make this easier for you..

LOTS OF DAMN SUPPORT OR GTFO.
Dear sir or madam,
College is the rocketship Jesus tits of life. As an adult I yearn for a life where I have minimal responsibilities, loads of peers my age with plenty of free time, minimal downside risk in life, minimal financial burdens, tons of sexual options (all who happen to be around their lifetime physical peak), and being arrested or doing drugs really isn't taboo.
Get your shit done first (it's the low stress way to live), because if you do that then the rest of your time is actually FREE time. As in you're not trying to relax with a subtle knowledge that each moment you're relaxing is actually procrastination & as such is slightly fucking you over more than the last minute.
Once your shit is done go apply to every cool internship (so you can have a baller job someday - this will take you like 3-5 hours per year to find), go bike/skate/run/swim/whatever so you don't look like a slob, now take this fit body and choose an attractive clean person to hook up with, get a bottle of wine/tequila/beers once a week - get tipsy, smoke a J after you've done all of this, reflect on life, once you can save up a few grand (and don't blow it), someday you'll really really need it and rather than asking for a favor you'll be able to chill in your underwear at 30 & shill out unwanted advice to some ungrateful kid. Hopefully even maybe just a little bit encouraging him/her/whatever to enjoy this season of life... since it is the most fun they will likely ever have. Learn to get shit done & enjoy life while you're in college or just accept having a shitty life. Totally up to you.
Also,
highlighters
Random 30 year old guy
He was price comparing to this, the Fischer one is MUCH better, probably use a higher quality silkscreen process, clean the burs up a bit better, use better plastic, and they probably electronically test them for accuracy afterwards (take a picture of them before shipping and make sure the silkscreening is on correctly). It's obviously more expensive than the cheap china crap. Easily 3x the price of the chinese crap when you consider the labor costs. But the real cheap Chinese rulers can be had for $0.20/each
It’s a highlighter called zebra mildliners.
Here’s a link: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0752PW6ND/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Oi3HDbRM62F6D
These highlighters have very calm colours and are soothing to the eye. I like these better than your typical neon yellow highlighter.
Thanks, glad you think so! I used a set of Steadler pigment liners. This set has treated me quite well and comes in a sturdy take-a-long case.

Thanks for sharing. I just ordered some!
Uni does as well. These are the ones I get from Jetpens.
Actually that's not correct, the one in the picture is the Uni Promark View Highlighter. You can differentiate it because the Uni has the coloured plastic behind the nib, but the Sharpie ones have black plastic behind the nib.
