A lot of us made mistakes starting out, but what's important is we learn from our mistakes, take the advice given, and improve the quality of life for our little buddies. I also understand having too small a space for a really big tank, but a 5g or even a 5.5g is really NOT that big... as reference, I originally had 3.5g tanks (the TopFin Enchant) for my bois with lots of water quality maintenance, but recently switched over to 5.5g tanks (TopFin Essentials kit) which fit in the EXACT same places the old 3.5g tanks fit (after doing a bit of cleaning and moving of stuff that didn't actually need to be there on the tabletop or simply sliding them over a bit). The tanks are just a bit more longer, around 16 inches long, but if you think about it, that's really not that bad and will fit fine on most nightstands or side-tables / end-tables or whatnot. I actually wish I had made the switch sooner. I see a NOTICEABLE difference in how much more active my bettas are now with the slightly larger tanks, even though they were quite active in the 3.5g tanks.

Do keep in mind that a filled 5g tank will weigh around 40 lb, and a 5.5g will weigh around 45 lb, so whatever you choose to keep them on should be able to support that amount of weight without collapsing (don't let that discourage you from getting the proper size tank though, just make sure to find sturdy furniture to keep them on :) and all will be well).

Here's some possible sturdy yet small shelfs/tables which will fit a 5.5g tank:

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-3-Shelf-Shelving-Unit-Black/dp/B01LWP8AL2/ (it says each shelf can support up to 250 lb). The only thing I would add (although optional, but would provide better support for the tank) is a sturdy but thin plank of wood to the top shelf surface for the tank to sit on top.

https://www.amazon.com/RooLee-Tables-Living-Vintage-Storage/dp/B07LC9F89R (another option that looks very sturdy, and would be amazing as a 5.5g aquarium stand, but costs more)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TLLSN5R/ (somewhat costly but looks great and sturdy)

Plants! They're great to have, I have some bamboo right now. I love it. Here's a really pretty bonsai tree!

And you definitely need a crock pot! They're super handy to have, just throw some food in in the morning and come home to a super easy meal, plus leftovers!

An electric kettle is another essential! Especially if you love tea.

Cheap, cute end tables! I turned the top of mine into a chessboard! Fancy-s up my room a lot.

Here and here are some really nice shelves!

You definitely need a set of knives too!

A really awesome bottle opener!

Here are some really cool glasses.

Aaand the cutest sake set ever.

Okay I'll stop linking now. I just really love household-y things! :D

Thank you for the contest and I hope this list helps!

I'm going to throw this one in there anyways even though it's by far the most expensive thing here, but still. 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display if you choose to go this way, I'm willing to help give you some specs that would help your friend out so they will be happy to be doing this forever and ever!

There are so many other options you could go with and if you choose to, your welcome to bounce ideas off me. The more special your piece I feel as though the more inspired your friend will be to be something big. I know I would!!

Good luck!!!

Not sure how to add more photos of it... I'm new here, haha.

I'll give some quick tips though.

This is my best standup desk investment - the Topo, makes standing for hours much easier - http://amzn.to/2eCjgC9.
My desk 'top' is a table from IKEA, it's pretty small but works great for a keyboard/mouse/other misc items - http://amzn.to/2eCjY2s.
This is my shelf that holds my laptop - might only work well in a setup where you're in a corner like I am - http://amzn.to/2frgGQU.
Amazon Basics wall arm is great, but you can use whatever - http://amzn.to/2frfa0V.
I use this to keep power bricks, etc out of sight - http://amzn.to/2ed49k6.
I put this little led strip behind my monitor - it's powered by USB and I have it plugged into my monitor so it is on when my monitor is on - http://amzn.to/2fIhguL.
Mousepad, i like the Razer Sphex for this, just because it's so thin - http://amzn.to/2eCmPbs - but it isn't the best pad for gaming, etc.

You'll want to put your desk top height so that when standing on the mat in whatever you're gonna use (I just wear socks) when your arms are at your side, your elbows form a 90 degree angle to go onto your keyboard/mouse. Your monitor should be at a height where your eyes are inline with about 2/3 up your screen (1/3 of your screen is above your eyes.)

I also put the shelf so that the laptop is below my monitor in case I want to pull my monitor out from the wall - however 99.9% of the time I find that I just have my monitor pushed back as close to the wall as it goes.

When mounting the desk to the wall, you'll want to try to put the center part into a stud, and use some decently burly drywall anchors for the rest. You'll find you may inadvertently lean on the desk and things like that, so you want it to be pretty solid.

Good luck!

Hey everyone.

For sale today I have this gorgeous faux-vintage coffee table. It’s got a stained yellow pine top with wrought iron wire bottoms. The legs are round footed making it perfect for display (or use) on rugs or carpets. Under the plane is a great, wide undercarriage for storing board games. The open construction really allows the table to open up, and the way the iron plays with the light... it’s really something special. Pictures don’t do it justice, you really got to see this bad boy in the flesh (metal (wood)).

The top is a little want for wear, and could do with a nice sanding, but I know some prefer the aged look. Personally I like a little patina on my coffee tables.

The dimensions are as follows:

  • height: 19 inches
  • Length: 4 feet
  • width: 2 and a half feet
  • under carriage is exactly 6 inches off the ground

The wife says I gotta sell this to make room in my collection so I can buy my grail table, this one: https://www.amazon.com/Tiffany-Coffee-Table-Clear-Finish/dp/B01LVZB4XT?th=1&psc=1

The tempered glass top is something of my dreams and so I’m flipping my current one to free up some funds for this. I’m sad to see it go tho.

Asking price is $125 OBO. I am willing to entertain trades if you have something really interesting but I mostly just want to sell. I can receive payment by PayPal (buyer eats the 3% fees if you wanna do G&S), I am also willing to do F&F if you’re comfortable, I have extensive positive feedback on /r/coffeetableexchange

I’m in Jacksonville FL if anyone wants to meet up. I’ll do a $15 discount for cash.

Thanks for reading guys. Let me know if you have any questions on this listing.

Oh gosh, moving is such a big job. I hope you're at least looking forward to it, or upgrading yourself into this house. Hrm. So it's a completely blank slate. That's actually really exciting! You'll definitely need somewhere to sit, and this chair seems comfortable and high quality for a price that isn't too difficult to justify, if it's one of your primary living room pieces. And to go along with it, this end table has a really cool design, and looks functional to boot. It's not all that expensive! Corelle dinnerware sets are seriously the best, and I'm in love with this one. Also, this one is cheaper and a lot of fun.

Hopefully you find some good ideas and your move goes smoothly. Thanks for the contest!

In all things storage, think "vertical" or "hidden"/"built-in" to save space.

  • Get a bed and bedframe, and put rolling storage containers underneath for your clothes. It saves space AND likely doesn't cost as much as a dresser. Example.
  • Use a hanging shoe organizer on the back of your door to store stuff. One idea: Use it to store your food more efficiently. Example.
  • You need more lighting. It's much cheaper (and looks cooler) to hang up lights on the ceiling. Think of draping them in a zig-zag from one end of the room to the other. Cafe lights look awesome.
  • You'll probably still need at least one extra lamp, though. Tripod lamps look great.
  • Your bed will be the feature of your room for years; make it look good! Get a light grey or cream-colored duvet, two big white pillows (to sleep on), some decorative grey pillows, and one faux leather lumbar pillow in cognac, to put it in front of the grey pillows and tie it all together.
    • Go one step fancier and get a blanket to drape over the bed. Navy blue or emerald green would look good. (Bonus: You have a blanket to curl up with.)
  • Get nesting tables. These can double as your coffee table, eating space, and extra table space when you have friends over, but will "nest" when the extra table space isn't needed, saving space.
  • This rug (2115, in navy blue) would look great in the space, it's affordable, and the darker color will be more forgiving of heavy traffic.
  • If you can only get one plant, either get pothos or monstera. Both make big statements.

Obviously you need a desk and a chair, and probably some bookshelves, but these are the big things I thought of. Good luck!

Hey there! Just finished setting up the nursery and writing this from my hospital bed during the induction process. Loved seeing everyone's nurseries!

A few very smart humans before me said to decorate with things that you like or things that can live in the rest of the house. It really stuck with me and with kids toys being so loud, I kept the base elements simple and soft.  Honestly it's my favorite room in the house and both my doggos love to chill in there waiting for their bud to join :)

I've just moved into a 1/1 in South Florida that has a 12.5' x 18' combined living/dining area as in most apartments. I moved with relatively little furniture and am starting fresh. I already have some plans here but want some feedback on my selections and ideas.

To start with —

The couch is a Ryler from Ashley Furniture in steel: https://www.ashleyfurniture.com/p/ryler-sofa/4020138.html

The TV/media unit is a BYÅS from IKEA. It is a glossy white but I am not necessarily trying to let that dictate the rest of the furniture in the room: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/byas-tv-unit-high-gloss-white-80227797/

I also own an Avenal shaded arc lamp from Target (in nickel finish) but haven't assembled it yet: https://www.target.com/p/avenal-shaded-arc-floor-lamp-project-62-153/-/A-52937505?preselect=51021780#lnk=sametab

The walls are white and the floors are a light grey/brown faux wood. The colors of the walls and floors both change a bit depending on the light — sometimes the walls look grey or off-white, but they are white. The floors look more brown than grey in the photo but in direct light they are pretty light. There is one ceiling LED fixture just out of the frame here, but the ceiling fan light kind of sucks and doesn't light the room very well, hence the big lamp.

Here are my plans —

Obviously will be moving my dog's bowls and food

u/magzma16 · 1 pointr/Decor

You should get a kitchen table...a small one you can put up against that bare wall but with the narrow not long end.- stash the candle on it instead of the living room table. It can function not only as an eating space but for board game night table too! and a bigger rug in the living room in the future than the green one- it kinda looks a little small and could be placed under the desk/ dining table to break up the space.

-Living room rug idea- cowhide?

-I also would recommend some kind of art that makes you happy above the couch and all around. You seem to dig earthy colors and that windiness look.

Check this out- http://www.decoist.com/2013-11-15/bachelor-pad-living-room-decorating-ideas/extend-your-living-space-beyond-the-obvious/
-I've thought about that book shelf. It might work better on the other side of the desk and with something like a tall lamp on it. It might be a good spot to hang the antlers above that later?
-End table in between the bookshelf and couch.- try this one?

-Why not have an accent muted green or maybe this green wall on that "dinning room" wall?
you could extend it into the kitchen's back wall but leave the separator?- I can't decide.

-a curtain for the window- you can find curtain rods with that cabin feel but keep the curtain light- or the same color as the accent wall green

Ok Sorry that's a lot- don't really know why I put so much effort. Its cool if you don't like any of the ideas- it was fun anyways.

u/Uhm_iMeantToDoThat · 7 pointsr/malelivingspace

You have a lot of small pieces in the space - if you want sleek, simplify. I suggest getting two more of the tv cube stands and bunch all three together. Now you have a long tv "console" and storage. You can migrate the printer and everything else on the short black shelf onto/into the cubes and eliminate that shelf from the space entirely. Maybe put the printer on the side closest to what I assume is the dining table so nobody has to cross over the tv if someone else is watching it. There are also cube baskets/bins you can get to put in some of those shelves to hide some of the clutter.

I agree on the floor lamp in the corner. Try to get something in brushed nickel/silver/iron Example 1 Example 2 - you have enough black and i think straight chrome would stand out too much. No shelf lamps or spider lamps. If you need that trashcan in the living room, try to hide it next to the lamp in the corner, or between the shoe rack and the wall.

The size of the rug is good but the pattern/color is eh. If you replace it, don't get anything smaller than that (5x7 I assume?), and maybe get something with a bit of color. If you like the red pillow, look for a rug with some red. Example 1 Example 2. If you're not going red, blues and greens would look good too. Low pile and polyester or better, polypropylene are your friends for college (well, anytime) rugs - low maintenance and easy to clean! Wool rugs can be like having an inanimate dog - very nice to look at but the shedding is not so great. If you don't mind that maintenance then go nuts.

I also agree on the coffee table - the end table probably isn't super functional for you. If you can, find something that has black and brown (example) so you can keep the end table at the end of the sofa while making it match your tv stand. Other things: If you need the woven cube storage in that room, try to bunch it on the dining table side of the TV stand. If the back of the sofa feels too bare after that, a slim console table would be a good idea - then you have somewhere to drop keys and a secondary drink/snack/etc surface. Wall art of course, be it pictures or just framed art on the big wall by the door. Maybe do 3 larger pictures/art pieces or a collage of different art in matching frames.

u/leanstotheleftabit · 2 pointsr/HomeDecorating

I'm really glad you linked the links and ideas. That art is a good example of how three pieces, presented well (framed, matted, good alignment/spacing) can really add to a room. And those storage cubes you can get at Walmart or Target (or your local equivalent) for cheap too.

> Also, you mentioned a coffee table but you linked something that Amazon says is a bench, I guess you just repurposed it instead?

Eh, bench style. Officially it is called the Nelson Platform Bench. It has been around for 70 years, but you wouldn't know it because it's just the kind of design that never goes out of style. Like Wayfarer sunglasses. That one link I posted is basically the same design, just with different legs.

While I'm on it, those Eiffel side chairs I linked to are almost as old, designed by Ray and Charles Eames, who are pretty famous in the mid-century modern style. Some models cost a pretty penny, but you can do a lot cheaper. You said you already had eating chairs, so maybe not these right away.

It sounds like a storage ottoman that can pull up to the couch may be more what you're after. Something like this or this?

This and this or this are other coffee table ideas with more storage. Apologies if Amazon does not ship to your area.

u/PastaZombie · 2 pointsr/homeowners

I have a lift top coffee table that I got from Amazon about 2.5 years ago for about $200 that I've been really happy with. Link My sofa is tall enough that it's comfortable to eat meals on it when it's lifted up, and the storage space inside under the table is also great. It's very sturdy with solid wood parts and relatively heavy overall. The tabletop is very stable when lifted. I also love that it has hidden casters under the legs so that it's easy to roll off the area rug for vacuuming or other activities that require more living room space, or simply to move it closer to you if you're eating off the table. Relatively easy to assemble. I did it myself in under 2 hours iirc, some of that time spent vacuuming up styrofoam debris.

u/Checkmate1234 · 95 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

After years of doing my makeup standing up in a tiny shared bathroom, I finally have a getting ready space of my own! We just moved into our first house, and I decided to convert the spare bedroom into a 'Glam Room'! In the room, I painted the walls, DIYed the no-sew faux Roman Shades (there's real honeycomb blinds behind them), wired the lighting, and assembled the furniture (with a buddy)! This was quite undertaking, and more than a few late night tears were shed throughout the process, but I could not be more pleased with the way it turned out!

Getting ready to DIY a makeup space of your very own, or have you already created you ideal space? I love to see pics of what you've done!

Not quite as elaborate as some of the others one here, but I figured some people like the simple style as well. I have a second nightstand coming for the other side, but need to figure out better lamps, if anyone has a suggestion for a good one that keeps in this style.
