Yes, you would probably need new bits for the impact driver. There are a couple of things with an impact driver:

You want to get "impact rated" bits. Typically it will say it somewhere on the package. An impact driver puts a lot more torque (twist) on a bit than a normal driver, so some bits (especially cheap ones) can break/shatter under certain circumstances.

Also, the impact driver (at least that DeWalt one) will only take 1/4" hex bits. Any bits you have with a rounded shank (part that goes into the driver) or that isn't a 1/4" hex won't work. The nice thing though about the 1/4" hex thing is once you have those bits, changing bits (like from drill to screw driver) is really quick and easy.

Here are some drill bits I've used:

Here's a pretty good screwdriving set:

and then I got this nut driver set:

I use 3 types.

For small holes to use for metal pins and antenna, you'll need a pin-vice. If manual twisting is an issue for you, you can get a spring action vice where you use a pushing motion and the vice does the twisting.

I use an electric power drill for larger holes. This is good in that you can control the rpm and torque so you can do precision holes. The drawback is that the smallest bit you can use is a 1/16th.

Then there's the rotary tool (commonly Dremmel) which uses high rpm's but has a ton of useful heads not only drills so can be used for cutting, sanding, drilling. But even at low rpm's it's still pretty fast and you can easily loose control. Also 1/16th is the smallest it can handle.

Just so you know, Oak is poisonous to smoke out of.

It does appear to be Oak, and however it could be Hickory or Maple. Maple is safe to smoke out of, so I'd recommend getting a set of Maple and trying it with that.

Also you said you wanted to drill through the full thing. http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DW1602-1-8-Inch-12-Inch-Extra/dp/B00004RGYL

And a scrap of wood you don't care about.

Also a drill but I'm bored of looking for links and you get the point
