Ohhhh man, I feel ya on the finals! The struggle. Is. REAL. I'm also a final semester senior right now and I have a full blown case of the senioritis right now. GUH, I don't wanna do anything! I just wanna graduate already, enjoy my summer, and start grad school, dangit!
Today I've been cooped up in a lab all day. I got about five hours of sleep, so I'm feeling kinda weird and out of it. My only subjects today are three hours apart too, so my plan was initially work on homework that's due tomorrow, but who am I kidding? I've been in the lab watching SNL on Hulu and checking up on RAOA. =) After my actual research meeting today, I plan on trying to be a bit more productive with my schoolwork, and hopefully cleaning up my room a bit, too. Yeahhhh today's one of those super boring Mondays...X) Sorry I don't have anything more exciting to tell you about today, haha!
For stuff that will help you with your revision I suggest these items: a comfy reading cushion so you can work anywhere and still be comfortable! This lap desk also so you can work anywhere and be comfy- also it gives you a nicer surface for writing or for your laptop. I actually have this lap desk and I love it! I have a 15" laptop, and I still have room on the desk for my mouse. This lap desk could also be used for gaming anywhere with your laptop (that's what I do quite often)! ;D
For revision breaks, I simply suggest going outside! Nothing is more refreshing than nature, my friend. Take a walk, go on a bike ride, just sit outside and read- whatever floats your boat! =D I tried looking on Amazon for some outdoorsy accessories for you, but it's really all personal preference on what sort of outdoor activities you like to do!
As for my wishlist, I'd really like this water bottle for my bike, but I'm honestly fine with anything on my wishlist in your range, so feel free to surprise me if I happen to win!
Who needs revision?! Thank you so much for this contest! And good luck with studying, revising, and of course, on your finals!
Look for a lumbar support pillow. You're gonna look weird carrying it around but it supports your lower back and it will help with the pain from sitting in the chairs in classrooms. I use it everywhere, car, classes, library etc.
I use this one personally: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IJNJAZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_0BMJzb92CBH25
Try Tiger Balm. It's another cream similar to icy hot but works better for me.
I have a tens unit from Amazon that works pretty well for a battery powered one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NCRE4GO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_NEMJzb3SXNPQ5
Also an electric heating pad and reusable ice pack or if your dorm has an ice maker like mine a reusable bag for ice depending on what works better for your back.
Get a good backpack. Something with a sternum strap and a hip strap if possible so that the weight is more evenly distributed. Also, I never carry anything other than exactly what I need for class to keep the weight down and try to buy as many textbooks as possible on Kindle so that there's less weight there as well.
A good mattress pad if you're in the dorm so that you can supplement the mattress with one that's better for your back. They can get expensive (Mine was about $100) but it's an investment in your health.
A good pair of inserts in your shoes from Roadrunner, an orthopedic doctor, or a similar store where they mold to your feet has truly helped my pain a lot. I stick them in the pair I'm wearing for the day and I'm good to go.
It's going to be tricky to fit a double bed in that small room, but it can probably be done if you're willing to replace the closet doors. It'll still be a tight squeeze though, and the room will be crowded. I don't think it'll be possible to fit in both a decent sized desk and extra seating.
For the bed, look for something with storage; a platform with drawers and maybe a bookcase-type headboard would give you quite a bit. If you like to read or lounge around on the bed, get a bed rest.
Because the room will be crowded and because you've said it's too dark, a glass desk would be ideal. Try a set-up similar to this one, but measure carefully to make sure you get a desk that will fit into the corner where your bed is now.
For a bit more storage and a place to put a bedside lamp, here's a mostly transparent nightstand.
For lighting, look for lamps that have a shade in a light color. For next to the bed, this one or this one would be good. Get another lamp to sit on the cabinet under the windows. It looks like it's not very wide, so a thin lamp would work well. All of these lamps will take at least a 100W bulb and the glass in the room will help reflect the light. You'll also need a desk lamp.
Here's a floorplan, and as you can see, the bed is taking up most of the space. I'm wondering if the bed will fit on that wall though, because there's a tall white thing? on that wall between the desk and the bookcase and I can't tell if it's built-in or not. I'm assuming it's not since you didn't include that in your measurements, but if it is, I don't think the bed can go on that wall.
First off, thank you so much for your detailed answer, I did not know about any of these ergonomic tips and will definitely try to adjust my seat to it.
For "lumbar support", I meant a lumbar support pillow, such as [this:] (https://www.amazon.ca/Premium-Memory-Lumbar-Support-MemorySoft/dp/B011MTPXE0).
Reading your comment about putting a pillow or tower at the peak of my lumbar curve, and having actually tried it out (with my fist) it felt..good, like my low back is being supported and I am not really slouching, like I'm automatically having a good posture by it. Not sure if this makes sense...
And your comment regarding the seat pan and pelvic tilt is exactly how my car seat felt like. The seat pan is tiled with an upward slope...
I think I will be buying the lumbar support pillow as well as adjusting the seat pan angle to make sure it's not sloping. Again, thank you so much for your time and research, I really do appreciate it!
Hey /u/Onmymind42 I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones whose mother got them a Liberator Wedge 35 years ago in the form of a "Husband Pillow"
My wife got one for herself and each of our teanage kids. The irony is that theirs are ripping and falling apart yet my wife and I routinely use ours for sex and it's still going! And I doubt that the kids have used theirs for sex becuase they haven't taken to their dorms. If they have snuck someone into their bedrooms for some knookie - more power to them!
From a sexual point of view, I can say that the wedge most definitely does enhance the experience. It gives a great angle for missionary. It also helps change things up a bit for the rear entry positions and helps to relax a bit for anal sex. Wedges are great sex toys.
Yes, it can be very intense and stressful at times, especially depending on the type of work you cover. You can minimize that by figuring out what types of assignments are a good fit for you. If you encounter people that you don't enjoy working with, you can choose not to work with them again. It's a very rewarding job and you're always learning. I would suggest bringing along a back cushion to your jobs to modify your chair. I like the McKenzie roll: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H47GCO/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_3FZ7CbXYPW704. I hope this becomes a career path for you. Good luck!
I am also interested in this! I had a sentinel shipped in today, and the lumbar support pillow is way too stiff. I thought it was in my mind until I used the softer U-shaped neck pillow on my lower back, and omg, it felt perfect.
I'm thinking about purchasing the Everlasting Comfort 100% Pure Memory Foam Back Cushion on Amazon. Free one-day shipping is ideal!
Finding a bra that fit me better (the key being a supportive band) made all the difference to the aching back I had all my life up until realizing that a 38 band was 8" too slack to give me any support. It seems like such a small thing, but getting the strain off my neck and shoulders helped so much. It meant I could stand up straight, walk, bend over, sit in a car, go up and down stairs and do a bunch of other average tasks that I never full realized were much harder for me because of my boobs causing neck and back strain. My posture improved dramatically, which in itself improved my physical fitness and core strength.
I had an injury to my lower back recently. I noticed that sleeping flat on my back is the worst thing I could do for it. If you're a natural back sleeper, maybe try a pillow like this to ease the strain on your spine?
I agree about lack of lumbar support hurting your lower back. I fixed that by buying one of those memory foam lumbar pillows on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D5J7SL2/). No more back pain for me even after several hours.
Now the wheel being too high and pedals too close can be fixed too if you're OK with more upright seating position. My real life daily driver is an SUV, so I'm used to that, but I understand that it could be awkward for other people. So what I did is I raised the seat by 1.5" using two 8020 15-series profile pieces that I put between the frame and the seat rails. I also used them for attaching keyboard tray and shifter mounts as it gives much more adjustability than the stock 6cm spaced holes and I coul finally mount both the shifter and the tray on the right side to have an unobstructed entry from the left side. Here're some pictures of my setup, hope that helps: https://imgur.com/a/52onJ
And I don't understand the complain about the shifter being too close. If you mount it using the same holes that are used for the front cross bar it will be anything but too close. When I added that 8020 I even even moved the shifter a bit closer to me. I'm 6'1" (185cm) and have rather long arms and legs and after all these upgrades the rig is pretty comfortable to me to sit the whole day in it.
Noodles!
Happy first birthday to your munchkin!! Time flys, eh?
This would probably be the most helpful right now, my computer chair offers like.. no support 😅
I couldn’t work without mine to be honest.
This is the one I bought off of amazon, it has over 3k reviews and very reasonably priced. I also bought one for my friend and another for my computer chair at home.
Everlasting Comfort 100% Pure Memory Foam Back Cushion - Lumbar Support Pillow for Office, Car and Chair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IJNJAZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ECS4CbDMAQCQG
Does having your feet up high make it easier for you to sit because you are then leaning a bit more forward, taking pressure off the low back? You could do this by using a stool under your feet, but that might actually end up causing tension in your shoulders, neck and upper back. Because those parts are pushed forward, they are no longer supported by the spine, which will eventually cause pain.. I am thinking the best way to ease the lower back and also support the entire back, (middle and upper) would be to place a cushion behind the low back, or get a chair that is specifically designed for lumbar support. Below is a link to a chair cushion. Might be worth checking out.

https://www.amazon.com/LoveHome-Balanced-Firmness-Designed-Computer/dp/B00D5J7SL2?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1
I take my McKenzie Roll to all freelance gigs. While it does have lumbar support, it’s also a constant reminder to have shoulders back and chest open. I also recommend installing a Chrome Extension that reminds you to do 20/20/20. Also just making sure you get up, stay hydrated, and get some exercise will help.
My wife got me a lumbar support for my desk chair similar to this one
https://www.amazon.com/LoveHome-Balanced-Firmness-Designed-Computer/dp/B00D5J7SL2/
It makes so much of a difference since I have back issues. I love it so much, she got me a similar one for my car seat
Honestly people. Stop buying into esport/streamer hype.
You want a comfortable chair? Keep your current one. Buy cushions that are designed to support your back/ass:
Currently using these two: For my tush and for my back. $40 turns your shitty chair into a dxracer with probably better armrests ( at least my $100 staples chair has cushioned armrests )
Don't buy into the hype. I'm sure they're nice chairs but $300? If you had that kind of money to dispose of then use it on your PC.
The Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll by OPTP - Standard Density (701) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H48WYA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sycFyb1HYZ1EJ
I use the firm density and I can take it in the house/office and use it there too. Been using it for 2 years and I love it.
Before you shell out a lot of money, try adding a lumbar roll to your current chair - something like https://www.amazon.com/OPTP-Original-McKenzie%C2%AE-Lumbar-Roll/dp/B000H48WYA/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1473945712&sr=8-1&keywords=back+support+roll. I used to have bad back pain and tried a variety of crazy chairs, and funny enough, adding this to the most basic office chair is usually the best solution for me. Just adding a little support/pressure in the right place can make a huge difference in your comfort.
Have you tried a lumbar support cushion? I have one of these at work and one for my chair at home and they've been a lifesaver for my back.
Then you might try a side sleeping lumbar support, it will straighten your lower back and subsequently your pelvis while sleeping.
Something like this should work.
Lumbar Support Pillow for Sleeping - Adjustable Height - Soft Memory Foam & Pearl Cotton Lower Back Support Cushion in Bed https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V3SD5RT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_IaqFDbAFM70EP
If you have scoliosis you should be talking to your doctor. Something else you can do is correct your posture when you sit, see if that helps. Get a lumbar roll, put your butt against the back of the seat and sit up straight. Obviously, search the internet about what you should look like sitting with proper posture. Definitely get x-rays and an MRI.
Oh, sorry I should have read your post better. I know the current Forester/Legacy/Outback lines have had some complaints about too much lumbar support and people have been removing the plastic bit that drives it, which is what I did. Thought maybe the WRX had something similar.
I've seen cushions like this and this. They seem to work well if you don't mind how it looks.
I got one of these and use it in addition to a small square throw pillow that goes in the bottom middle of the backrest and then I use my regular (more flat) pillow at the top of the backrest. Seems to be working pretty well for me. I am currently 2 days post op and can sleep for about 6 hours at a time this way.
6'1" here as well. I lower the seat all the way and then add about 2 pulls up. I set the steering wheel so that when I look down, I can easily see all of the guages. Then I lay my arms on top of the steering wheel, with my back against the seat, and move back till wrists are sitting on top of the steering wheel. Then I adjust the recline for comfort. No issues driving for long period of time.
As for lumbar, they make these great little cushions now that you can use. I can't go without the lumbar, then my back will hurt.
For those of you who love the bed life and don't need this advice, double advice time! I highly suggest one of these, one of these, along with a decent laptop and mouse.
I really like this lumbar support pillow.
I have to go to physical therapy because of my shoulders/neck due to chronic muscle pain and my PT recommended I buy the lumbar support below. Not only does it take strain off of my lower back but it really helps decrease the tension in my shoulders and neck since it helps correct my posture. I don't wrap it around the chair, I just put it within the lordosis of my lumbars and am good to go. I also

I also invested in this book stand because I found that looking directly down at the table was also contributing to my pain

I bought this and it completely changed the way I stand.
You should also buy her one of these; no idea how she can be comfortable laying with the computer like that.
This this this:
https://www.amazon.com/Original-McKenzie-Lumbar-Roll-OPTP/dp/B000H48WYA
they have them in different shapes and thicknesses, find what's most comfortable for you. with amazaon especially you can always return it and try a different one. has helped me a lot
Use a lumbar support:

Make sure your hips are ABOVE your knees in your driving position, else you'll end up with hip problems as well
Good Luck and take it easy :)
Use one of these when you have to sit for a long time. Also get this book in case the PTs you saw didn't show you this exercise.
Swimming is the best thing you can do for a bad back.
Ginger is a powerful antiinflammatory and it is a lot easier on your system than ibuprofen.
I realize many of these things might be too weak for your pain, but they are all worth a try.
If CBD oil capsules don't work for you see an MD familiar with CBD to see if they can get you some of the more potent products that are available to only MDs.
I know a couple Huey pilots that fly with these:
Lumbar Support Roll Pillow
Everlasting Comfort
MemorySoft Lumbar Support Pillow with Mesh Fabric, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011MTPXE0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_LLdzxbDT73NQ3
Wet wipes! Getting up to go wash your face is hard so just having those handy was nice as I felt gross and sweaty.
Lots of other great lists on here, but my other thing is, I got one of those pillows with the arm rests - that thing was GOLD
https://www.amazon.com/Brentwood-Originals-Brushed-Twill-Bedrest/dp/B002S0NJNK
I generally don't get back pain from this seat itself no. However they do also make these for it:

For those who have back issues that supposedly helps. Beyond that do have to be careful getting in and out of the thing, sort of a process as to how low it is. If I were looking at another cockpit I would have gone with a different brand honestly, mostly one that doesn't have a center bar, but I can't justify a new one now as this one does get the job done.

I've got one of those and it's been a game changer. Lumbar support is severely lacking or way too low down or way too high up. Pretty much back pain free now.
That item looks mighty fine.
This looks comfy.
You're going to buy this. Because I said so. And because That item looks mighty fine.
this is what I have. got it on amazon and I’ve had it for years.
like a lower back support?
kinda like that?
Lower back support might help. I sit a lot at work and have had a lot of back problems over the years, including back surgery. I use this back cushion on my office chair and in my car. It’s helped tremendously.
I hate that you're having so much back pain. Mine has finally subsided. Here's a few things what might be helping me.
Desk job here also. I bought this for my chair. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IJNJAZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Jgz.zb12W822H
Here's my maternity belt: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0113WE0QS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_yMnUTP6iIT3gX
Otherwise, I started doing squats, slow and controlled, 5-7 days a week and that seems to have helped tremendously.
I hope you get some relief!
you're welcome
Try this works for me

Its called a "husband", a pillow with little arms that fails to prop itself up. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KBVDQRW
Before dropping a ton of money or modding your seat maybe you could try one of these?
At most you would be out a couple bucks.
I used to have horrible back pain. At night I would cram pillows under my legs and in the morning I would curl in the fetal position before getting out of bed to release the pain. I made a few changes that fixed it for me.
Also for a bonus tip YouTube stretches for your hip flexors.
Get a lumbar support pillow. Works wonders
Or get a portable table for bed
the downside is that studying while lying in bed makes me sleepy.
I have a 2014 without powered seats as well, and I had the exact same problem as you after about a year of ownership. Developed some pretty intense lower back pain that wouldn't go away (I have a long commute every day).
I bought this (Amazon - Lumbar Support Pillow). Solved my problem completely. Pain went away and didn't come back.
Best of luck!
A lumbar pillow could also be good, it also puts you a little more forward. I move it around a lot while driving, https://www.amazon.com/Original-McKenzie-D-Section-OPTP-700/dp/B000GPM520/ref=lp_3732051_1_13?s=bedbath&ie=UTF8&qid=1498467059&sr=1-13 ,
but it helps a lot.
TENS would help but that's really dangerous to drive with. If one of the electrodes gets disconnected it shocks you and you're gonna lose control of the vehicle.
This works for me. Makes me hate the car a little less.
I used this wedge and this McKenzie roll.
I previously had a softer McKenzie roll given to me by a PT, but after about 15 minutes of driving I found it no longer gave useful support. The firm one works much better for me on longer drives, and no worse on short drives.
e: also, some free advice - keep up with your exercises after the pain goes away. Even if you feel no pain when jumping up and down, that doesn't mean the disc is actually totally healed - it just means it isn't bad enough that it's getting pinched.
I do the same. My car also has a fairly flat seat and I bought it for this reason. So where the seat meets the back is almost at a 90 degree angle and not 45.
Cars with seats that dip towards the back making my hips lower than my knees hurt my hips.
I also use a wedge cushion similar to this:
https://www.amazon.com/Duro-Med-Coccyx-Cushion-Pillow-Sciatica/dp/B000HLZ8XQ
I find it takes the pressure off my tailbone and helps me sit at the right angle. It also adds a bit of softness.
I have a 2018 Premier and bought a lumbar cushion from Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Everlasting-Comfort-100-Memory-Cushion/dp/B01IJNJAZ0/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=lumbar+cushion&qid=1558472773&s=gateway&sr=8-5
I am 6'6" and felt the seat really rounded out my back and didn't support my lumbar at all. With the cushion I find it acceptable. Still one of the worst features of the car, sadly.
Get a Freedom Back Pillow. There are ones that have a massaging feature but its gimmicky and useless, the standard one that I linked is great.
I have one of these basic computer chairs and I had terrible back pain with it, and tried looking for a good task chair but all of them were $800+ so I bought the back pillow and no more back pain. Just gotta make sure you use it properly.
First of all, if you drive a lot, a McKenzie roll http://www.amazon.com/Original-McKenzie-Lumbar-Roll-OPTP/dp/B000H48WYA?th=1 for your car seat helps a lot. If you're like me and like the seat way back, you need to move it up closer so you're sitting pretty much straight up. One of the sciatica symptoms is if you almost cry getting out of the car, you've got it. The exercises I did were:lying on my stomach on the floor, slowly push up with your arms and arch your back, then slowly back down (should take 20-30 seconds per rep) 15 reps. Then lying on my back with feet in the air (like an L shape) slowly raise your bottom and lower back off the floor. Don't really engage your abs, just try to stretch your lower back. These were recommended to me by a massage therapist friend (after a massage, which might help), I am in no way an authorized medical advice dispenser. Sitting on a medicine ball (instead of a chair at my computer) helped a lot too.
It took about a month to get it better, but I swear, if I had had to live with that pain all my life I would have seriously considered something horrible. The pain is excruciating. It took some time to get that bad so get going on fixing whatever it is sooner rather than later. Good luck.
