Computer:
PC is the way to go. Not sure about the AU market (I only speak freedom dollars), but $2,000 will buy you a really good PC. An 8700k or 9900k CPU, 16 or 32gb of ram and a 2080ti or 1080ti GPU will be enough to run anything well.

Software:
You’ll prob find Assetto Corsa has the biggest track selection. There’s a huge modding community that make add ons (both free and for purchase) for the game. It’ll take some tinkering with the mods, but the game will look really good for a few dollars.

For multiplayer racing, nothing beats iRacing IMO. I get so nervous lap 1 my legs shake. It costs way more than AC though, so if AC works for him, stay there. It looks like iRacing is paying attention to the Aussie market. They’re adding a new Gfinity Supercars eSeries in 2020: https://www.iracing.com/iracing-to-develop-two-new-australian-supercars/

Wheel/Pedals:
I have a G29 wheel with shifter and it works well, but I swapped out the pedals for the Fanatec V3s and chopped a half second a lap. The sky’s the limit here, but don’t skimp on the pedals.

Screens / VR:

Rig:
Weld up your own. If you guys race, you either have a mig or know a guy that does. You’ll blow your budget on a decent rig otherwise. That’s the core of it. Any one of the topics above can be a bit of a rabbit hole. If you want to take it one step at a time, build the PC, buy a good size monitor and the wheel/pedal set first then build from there. The G29 can be used on carpeting without a problem so driving from a computer desk in the short term while you guys figure everything else isn’t a bad way to go.

For virtual surround sound, you can use Astro MixAmp Pro TR, Creative Sound Blaster G6, or Turtle Beach Elite Pro TAC. I recommend SBX Pro Studio (Creative) over Dolby Headphone (Astro and Turtle Beach) because it has less compression and more accurate positional audio.

 

Setup

You attach the BoomPro mic by inserting it directly into the headphone, which replaces the original headphone cable.

The cable terminates in a single 3.5 mm connector, so you can connect it directly to the controller or any other device with a headset jack, like the Mixamp, Sound Blaster G6, and Pro TAC. If you connect it to a regular headphone jack, then the mic won't work. No mics will. If the device only has separate headphone and mic ports, then you need to use a TRRS Y-splitter, which is included with the BoomPro.

 

Sound

SV007:

SV007 a well-balanced sound profile. The mid-bass, which is where boom and punch come from, is a little bit boosted. The sub-bass, which is how deep the bass goes and is where rumble comes from, is a little bit reduced. The overall bass is clean. The treble is close to neutral. It's clean, smooth, and crisp. The midrange is clear, not tinny or muffled. The overall clarity is great.

It has a large soundstage, very good imaging and separation, and good to very good detail retrieval for competitive shooters. I assess headphones mainly in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, a multiplayer game I've played for over 3000 hours and I thrive at relying on sound cues.

Soundstage is perceived space and environment of sound. It's width, depth, and height. I talk about the type of soundstage that the headphone produces. Many games have a narrow, shallow, and short soundstage. A small soundstage makes the environment around you sound confined or boxed in. With a large soundstage, the environment sounds more spatial and expansive. You can't comprehend it without experiencing it. Imaging is inherent to the audio content. It's how accurately the locations of sounds/objects are reproduced. Soundstage and imaging constitute positional audio, and you could say they are the stereo equivalent of virtual surround sound. Before you make any stances on virtual surround sound, I recommend that you read this post I wrote. Separation is how you discern individual sounds from a range of overlapping sounds.

Build, ergonomics, & features

SV007:

SV007 has an open design (as you can see with the grills on the earcups), so sound passes freely in and out, unlike closed headphones which attenuate sound from passing through. The benefits of an open design are generally a larger soundstage and better imaging. If your ears tend to heat up, it may help mitigate this as it allows more airflow and heat to dissipate.

The build is sturdy and lightweight, featuring metal yokes, hinges, and headband. It has no flimsy or squeaky parts. The cups are made of wood. They tilt and swivel and can lie flat. I have average sized ears and the earpads fit around them and don't press them against the inside of the cups. The pads are plush and have a smooth and relatively high-quality protein leather. The headband has decent padding, but the headphone has great weight distribution so it doesn't exert pressure on top of my head and doesn't cause hotspots. Adjusting the headband is smooth and easy and it stays firmly in place. The clamping force is mild and isn't too loose or too tight for my average sized head. The build quality is excellent with a near immaculate finish all around.

BoomPro:

BoomPro has a flexible aluminum neck and a tangle-free, braided cable that's free of microphonics. The game volume and mic mute controls are easy to adjust and don't accidentally adjust themselves when rubbing against your clothes. Adjusting them is smooth and consistent, not scratchy, sluggish, or sticky. The mic is as non-obtrusive as a boom mic can be and is almost unnoticeable in my peripheral vision.

The MK8 bundle comes with a V1 Switch + MK8, and thus basically saves you $60 versus getting a V2 + MK8. It's a value proposition. How much is better internal battery life worth to you? If you truly intend to keep it docked and/or in the car, I think you could easily work around the V1's limitations. Car power, battery banks, etc.. Easily fixed. However, if you get the V2, you keep the door open for some more options. Maybe you end up getting a Switch per kid because they really want their own and the ability to go mobile...if you went with the V2, then your initial purchase is a healthy participant in that possible outcome. If you saved $60 and got the V1, then whoever gets the V1 will have to accommodate its shorter battery life.

Still, for now, it's primarily docked...so for now, it really doesn't matter which model you have (V1 or V2). Let's focus on controllers! The Pro Controller is a great controller. Make sure you get an "E" unit.. This article explains what I'm talking about (at the time of the article, D was the latest...now we're up to E). There's some debate about what these letters mean, and not all countries use these identifiers (USA does), but one thing is for certain: ones labeled "E" were at the very least put into boxes more recently than prior letters. That implies more recent production runs, and possibly improved components. Anecdotally, it seems like the more recent controllers have higher quality d-pads. This is important because Pro Controllers have acquired a bit of a reputation for overly sensitive dpads that would register some inputs incorrectly. For my part, I have two. I think one is a C and the other is an E. The E's dpad is a lot more reliable, it works like I'd expect. With my older Pro Controller, I do not even waste my time trying to play Tetris 99 with it, due to how easy it is to get erratic responses from the dpad.

Another great option for controllers are the 8bitdo controllers. The SN30 Pro+ is currently on a lightning deal at Amazon. I also really like the non-plus version, the SN30 Pro. It lacks the palm rests and (for the hardcore) programmability, but it's smaller and usually a little cheaper...but for the next 40 minutes, they're the same price!

Using numpad notation: (5 = neutral, 6 is toward the opponent, 8 up, etc.)

IAD: 8 6 6 and 8 4 4 are pretty inefficient try:

IAD forward: 9->6 (wait a little in between, going back to neutral before 6. the cleaner/faster you get with this the closer to the ground you'll be when you dash - which is preferable because it gives less time for the opponent to react)

IAD backward: 7->4 (again neutral in between)

Other people have pointed out the shortcut for airdashing - I've always found those kinda hit or miss, so i prefer the above. Up to you though.

Long Jump: input: 2 8 (neutral) or 2 9 (forward) or 2 7 (backward)

TBH i don't really use this as much as I should(? idk i just play for fun and self-improvement, i'm not competitive), but it's just a practice thing - getting used to your controller. To practice, a good setup is to see if you can do a move/combo (or in this case jump) all the way from one side of the screen to the other (multiple times if it's a far-moving move) without messing up. IAD is the perfect example, start from one corner and IAD repeatedly until you get to the other corner. Do it until you can go the whole screen without missing the input. (don't just grind for it though, probably best to do this as a warm-up for 20 mins or less per day for a bit)

I second this OP, I just got in this week the new wireless 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ controller for $50 & its amazing. As someone online described it, its like a hybrid between the dualshock 4 + Switch Pro controller. The layout of the buttons & dpad is like the PS4 dualshock but its a retro Nintendo design for sure. It comes in 3 colors: the Gameboy variant, SNES, or an all black. (I personally went with gameboy cuz I have the Pro controller already which is an all black. And I prefer the button colors for the Gameboy over the SNES)

For features it has:

1. customizable software (which also includes the ability to set macros to certain buttons or just to adjust the sensitivity of things)
   
   
2. the ability to work across devices/platforms, as it can be used for things like the Switch, Android, Mac, or PC
   
   
3. a rechargeable battery that is ALSO removable & allows you to use two AA batteries to power it if your battery dies (and the rechargeable battery has a 20 hour life which is pretty good for a 3rd party controller
   
   
4. actual handles/wings unlike all the other 8bitdo controllers they've done in the past
   
   The placement of the dpad makes it perfect for platformers, & especially for Mario Maker 2 which is why I pre-ordered it. The official Switch Pro controller is good...except for the fact that the dpad can register false movements. Because you can for example press right & down at the same time accidentally when you're only trying to press right. But the SN30 Pro+ its also an all around great controller, not just for platformers.
   
   If you'd like something more portable & don't mind lacking wings/handles, 8bitdo has smaller versions/variations of the wireless SN30 Pro+ but without wings & the customization software. They are usually between $40-$50 for the SN30 Pro or SF30 Pro models, the regular N30 Pro/Pro2 is around $40, & there's even a wired model for $25.

I use keyboard and mouse for FFXIV, but for other games where I do use a controller I use the Razor Sabertooth. It's definitely on the pricey side, but I absolutely love it and I usually hate Razor products. Thankfully this only uses the normal driver that an Xbox 360 controller so there's no Razor Synapse or anything else that I had to uninstall. Detachable cable, backlit buttons, excellent D-pad, good triggers, good analog sticks, and the switches they used for the actual buttons are really nice.

I would highly recommend it to anyone willing to spend more money, since it really is worth it for something you use everyday.

Good catch with 2.4g vs. bluetooth, I always forget about that.

The biggest differences between each 8bitdo line are aesthetics and features such as rumble, analog sticks, motion controls, triggers and turbo:

• The SN30 is a base model that only features a d-pad, face buttons and a set of L and R buttons on the top. It resembles a SNES/SFC controller and works over Bluetooth and USB-C.
  
  
• The SN30 Pro takes the SN30 form factor and adds rumble, analog sticks, motion controls, turbo, and a second set of triggers. Still works over Bluetooth and USB-C.
  
  
• The NS30 Pro 2 has all the features of a SN30 Pro controller with a slightly different layout. The second set of shoulder buttons are set inside the first set.
  
  
• The SN30 Pro+ is a SN30 Pro controller in a form factor that adds grips similar to a Sony Dualshock controller. Still works over Bluetooth and USB-C.
  
  Features
  
  It all boils down to what features you want. The SN30 is a great replacement for a stock SNES/NES controller and is about $10 US cheaper than the other models. The Pro and Pro+ will also work great with the NES Classic, and will allow you to play PS1 games that require analog sticks.
  
  Aesthetics
  
  8bitdo has a number of color variants for each of their lines that have no effect on how the controllers operate. The SN30 GP line are a set of SN30 controllers stylized like the original Game Boy Pocket line. There's no functional difference between a SN30 and SN30 GP controller other than how it looks. The SN30 Pro line has two options: One that matches the original Game Boy and another that looks like a U.S. Super Nintendo controller.
  
  And there's the newer NS30 Pro2, which has an NES option that should match well with the NES Classic.

  For me, I like the SN30 Pro because it's a good compromise with the SNES controller form factor combined with modern features. The triggers aren't great for modern games, so I only really use my SN30 Pro for emulators and retro-style games.
  
  I already own a set of Dualshock 4 controllers, so I didn't see a need to have grips on my 8bitdo controller. But if I were using an 8bitdo controller as my daily controller, I would strongly consider getting the SN30 Pro+ for the added grips.
  
  8bitdo doesn't do a great job at describing the differences between each of their controller lines. Some sort of feature grid would be extremely helpful.

The emulator in my opinion is the easiest emulator to use. And for the ten years it has been in development I expect as much. Set up controllers on here is super easy and make the use of applications like JoyToKey and Xpadder not apparent. You can, in the application, map all the keys you want to any Xbox 360 wireless controller, PS3 controller or any plug and play controller.

If you're in the market for using a Gamecube controller you can get GC Controller Adapter for PC, if you already have a Gamecube controller of course. If you don't have one I recommend getting a Retro Link GameCube Style USB Wired Controller. I personally love RetroLink so they in my opinion are the best for the job.

If your low on room physically, saving up some dough for a playseat challenge might be your best bet. Just fold it up and stick your entire rig in the closet when your not using it, but it's a comfortable and reasonably sturdy rig when your burning some rubber. It's not gonna hold up to a $1,000+ direct drive wheel, but it would be perfect for anything else.
At a minimum if your not using one already, try to get a desk chair rather than an office chair so that it doesn't try to turn on you while your playing.

Then save up for a VR headset like the Samsung Odyssey or Odyssey Plus if you can. Everyone looks down on windowsMR for its tracking but it's seriously incredible and means you can get a killed deal on the headsets used on eBay. Plus in a racing sim you don't use the WMR controllers anyway so your basically just getting a vive pro quality screen and vr experience, for in the $200-$280 range. VR was seriously the best investment to my rig I have made so far. Absolutely love the clarity of my Odyssey plus after having an OG vive and Rift.

Okay, I tested it out with all three of my devices (android tablet, Shield TV, and PC). It's a winner. No discernable input lag on the Shield or PC. Minimal lag on the tablet, and that was probably more because the tablet is Intel and struggles to maintain framerates in almost everything. Input lag went away when I gave up on Retroarch on the tablet and tried a GBA game with Pizza Boy GBA, so I'm guessing it was the framerates, I wasn't keeping 60 FPS in RA.

I was able to nail combos on Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 that I struggled with on my XB360 controller on PC. The sticks are sensitive and I can tip toe and move at all speeds in Mario 64 (generally how I test sensitivity with Android controllers, that and F-Zero X but I haven't tested that game yet).

I'd put the d-pad on par with a Nintendo or Sony one. It's... different from the Sony, and has a bit more play in terms of wiggling than a Nintendo one, but it feels good, and no issues with diagonals, rolls, or even f-hcf /qcb/qcf, fdf motions.

The handles are more comfortable and hold more naturally than a Sony pad and really gives it a nice grip along with the slight texture on it. As a bonus, the centered battery gives it a nice heft, the rumble is faint but definitely there. I haven't tested the gyro yet. Also, it has a chargeable battery pack built in but you can also pull it and use AA batteries if you prefer. That was a nice touch, seems they thought of everything.

My only complaint is it doesn't seem to have a home button; at least not one that Android recognizes. Maybe that can be changed via the controller's software. I haven't downloaded that yet.

If you get it, just be sure to pair it to the right mode for your device. I noticed a bit of input lag initially when testing but it's because I paired it in Switch mode to my Android devices. Once I realized the error and paired it properly it was fine.

Edit - I got the Gameboy one (off-white w/magenta buttons), if it matters. Wasn't any matter of preference, it was just the only one in stock at Amazon. I'm glad I did though, the textured strips on the dpad are kinda nice and the other models don't have that.

Royal Kludge makes some decent boards, the only downside I see to that one is the non-removable wrist wrest and the huge bezels that make the board well... uh... pretty big, and the usb is non-removable.

I can see why its appealing, its on sale and a full sized board, but I don't think its the best option, if you don't need the numpad or don't use one very often you can go with a TKL (Tenkeyless aka Numpadless) board and then buy a numpad seperately (Jellycomb numpad is under $20).

Its slightly longer than a 60% board but it gives you arrow keys and the nav cluster (pg up, end, ect.), and it has optional bluetooth.

Its not my primary board but its build quality is pretty good and for the price I'd definitely recommend it since its essentially a Magicforce 68 with rgb, the Magicforce 68 being another very popular option around here but its not RGB, not that that's a bad thing but the board you linked is RGB making me think your probably looking for a keyboard with RGB backlighting and not a solid color.

Kinda, you can upgrade your health and stamina by completing shrines. No traditional experience based RPG levels, you can't just grind in one spot until you're buff.

The benefits of the Pro controller is that it can scan Amiibos, has HD rumble and can turn on the system by holding down the home button.

The benefits of the SN30 Pro+ is that it has a much better d-pad, and has software that lets you remap all the buttons, change joystick deadzones, trigger sensitivity, and a few other things.

Technically the A-B-X-Y is backwards on every other controller because the SNES controller used those buttons first. But yes, every controller made for the Switch will have the Nintendo layout.

There's also some good multiplatform games that I feel work better on the Switch due to portability like Dragon Quest XI, Final Fantasy 7\8\9\10, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy,
Katamari Damacy Reroll and Undertale. So if you haven't picked up those for PS4 you may want to consider them for the Switch.

Single player games most people enjoy in general and might be your type are Super Mario Odyssey, Bayonetta + Bayonetta 2, and Astral Chain.

  The SN30 looks pretty much exactly like the original, except the text says "8Bitdo GamePad Bluetooth Controller" instead of "Super Nintendo Entertainment System". They're both great, and I've gotten pretty good scores in Tetris when playing alone.
  
  But when more controllers are connected, and I'm playing multiplayer Tetris, there's an ever-so-slight input lag that makes me consistently make mistakes. Just switching to the left Joy-Con directional buttons is better.
  
  So my main hope with this official one was that, since it's essentially a Pro controller with missing buttons and sticks, the input lag issue wouldn't exist. I haven't confirmed it. I'll do it this Friday at the office where we play Tetris regularly.
  
  The fact that it also looks like the official one is just a plus ;)

I'm still plugging away at Fire Emblem: Three Houses and just started back into Dragon Quest XI. I don't have a ton of new thoughts on either, but I'm playing them and hoping to get through Fire Emblem fairly soon. Hey guess what, that guy what likes JRPGs really likes Dragon Quest go figure.

I bought a 8Bitdo Sn30 to help expand my rotation of controllers. It's a neat little controller with a killer D-pad. The D-pad is so good, in fact, that it kinda makes me worse at the games I've been playing, namely Celeste. I've gotten so used to the kinda squirrely nature of the Joycon analog stick that trying to play with an honest to god D-pad made me fail repeatedly. I played a few SNES games with it and they all felt great, though Super Mario World was a lot harder than I remember.

We aren't doing a push present, but I was just shopping for my wife's birthday and settled on these slippers. Alternatively, to go with the gaming theme, I just purchased this controller. It works with the Switch (and PC) and has an awesome d-pad. The same company makes more retro styled controllers but this one is brand new and felt great for old school Mario as well as some Monster Hunter World on PC. I literally got it yesterday, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Here's my setup:

  This allows you to use your Pi not only as a RetroArch machine, but also a general-purpose media center machine running Kodi. Seeing as I have multiple machines like this around the house, I serve up my ROMs and Save Game data off a server via NFS, so that I can play a game on one box, then move to another one and pick up my saved game from there. This is a far better setup than the shit Nintendo is releasing.

Well, here's some tips!


If you are going full digital, I really recommend you to buy at least a 128 gb microSDXC card, that way you can hold a good amount of games.

If you can, buy the yearly subscription of Switch Online, while it has NES Online and sweet deals and all of that stuff, the cloud save is the best thing it can offer, so that you can have your save files... saved from accidental stuff that hopefully won't happen to your switch.

Pro Controller is a recommended if you want traditional controller, but if you want a cheaper but durable controller, 8bitdo's SN30 Pro's the best one for that. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GK8J3V8?th=1

And of course, the bigger the screen, the better the gameplay, so play it docked. c;

Wired Controllers usually connect to the computer through the usb slot.

Wireless Controllers usually connect through Bluetooth, but some like the wireless version of the Xbox 360 controller require a receiver to connect and work with computers.


Most controllers that are made for PC are plug and play, meaning once you've plugged it in, it's ready to use for controller friendly games.


You can find out whether the game has controller support by checking it's store page on Steam, it will show on the bottom right of the page.

If the game isn't set-up for controller use, you usually set up custom controls for the controller using a program like JoyToKey.

The Xbox 360 Wired Controller is what I use, but there are better alternatives if you have the cash to spare.

But then I thought... I should have asked you guys for advice before buying. I did my own research so you guys, being veterans, might have a better suggestion.

I bought it off amazon for 52 bucks, had a lot of great reviews, probably the most well reviewed wireless mech for the price range. Went with the brown switch for a mix of gaming and typing, 71 key because when I'm playing games, extra keys tend to get in the way after a certain point and I'm a minimalist anyway. I also like the spacing on mechanical keyboards and this keyboard in particular. The general layout has enough room between the keys and the keycaps are clearly defined from each other so you don't accidentally mash more than one and it will register even if you do.

Are there better mechanical kbs for this price range/these specs, though? Amazon will let me return it if you guys have a better suggestion.

I have this one from Amazon but in just white backlit not RGB.

The switches are actually really nice (if you like blues) although VERY loud. I just put o-rings on last night which substantially improved sound...now all you hear is the switches instead of the keycaps themselves clacking off the board.

Also the keycaps seem to be of surprisingly decent quality, all double shot injection molded.
Another bonus I found was that the larger wire stabilized keys are not attached directly to the wire but to a '+' attached to the wire just like another switch.

It is also available tenkeyless.

(note - "e-element" "eagletec" and "mechanicaleagle" are all the same switches and for the most part the same board.)

The folks over at XDA still haven’t cracked the Note 3? That is surprising. I have the Moga Power Pro (same as the pro but bigger battery and can charge you device) and the Pocket. You will not be disappointed by the quality of Moga, any model you choose is well built and sturdy. I don’t recommend the pocket because you will need root with some emulators, the pocket does not have an HID mode like the pro. The 3rd controller you mentioned seems a lot like the IPEGA-9025 and should cost about 20.00 bucks. I read mixed reviews about the IPEGA some bashing the quality of the buttons and others bashing the compatibility with apps and phones. Is Gameclip and option because I think the OTG cable to the Sixaxis controller directly should work. Good Luck, If you do get the IPEGA post a review.

I originally had a set of Astro a40 headphones that I used with a 2013 Astro Mixamp. I recently bought some new, audiophile grade headphones, but I'm currently still using the Astro mixamp and I'm not really impressed with the quality. I'm not sure if my mixamp is just damaged / defective but I get lots of random noise and panning of the audio depending on the position of the volume/chat level knobs. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for another DAC/amp I could try out that has similar features. I really like the theoretical feature set the Astro mixamp has (down mixing from optical 5.1/7.1 into analog stereo, putting mic levels into the audio mix so I can hear myself, etc.) but I've had a hard time finding a similar product. That being said, if my best option is to just buy a new Mixamp I'm okay with trying my luck again. Thanks in advance for the help!

PS: if anyone has an idea if there's a difference between the 2013 mixamp I have now, the Mixamp "TR" and the Mixamp here I'd appreciate knowing the difference because as far as I can tell I don't think there is one haha.

I bought this DREVO keyboard on Amazon Prime Day, it doesn't have FN keys but I love the rechargeable wireless component to it and it's been very enjoyable to use. It can be wired if you connect the charging cable to the PC's USB port. It's a little small (no FN row or numpad, full size keys though) but I try to keep my system somewhat portable. Long story short, the DualShock 4 output isn’t that great. It has limitations meaning that plugging a $20 set of headphones in will have the same maximum volume a $200 set will have. It’s best to bypass the DS4 altogether when looking for optimal audio quality. There are two ways to do this:

Get a wireless headset like the Gold headset mentioned already.

Or, you can buy an amp if you’re looking to use an existing headset. I have a pair of Sennheiser Game One headphones and I use this amp in order to make the most of them. As someone that values audio above pretty much all else, let me tell you, it was worth the money.

Just keep tinkering with DS4Windows, and make sure you have the latest version.

If you're really serious about emulation though, I'd recommend getting some USB controllers for you console of choice. For example, I love SNES, N64, and GameCube games, so I have these:

There are probably some newer & better versions than what I have, and the prices on these things fluctuate a bit as well, so keep an eye on prices for the best deal if you're interested.

I currently just have the headphones, and it's only stereo from audio jack from controller or 3.5 to usb adapter. It still sounds amazing. Has a detachable mic and custom plates and head pad you can swap out . Build quality is the best I have ever seen. I do plan on picking up the Astro mix amp pro later.

Edit: I should have read your whole post before replying. I don't think you'll be able to have a fullsize keyboard on your lap with your surface and still be comfortable, sorry. I wasn't even comfortable with the official keyboard. The kickstand dug into my legs in laptop mode.

It's got a few issues here and there with the wireless but it should treat you well.

There's a lot of other wireless cheap options too if you want something less expensive, especially if you go TKL instead of 60% which will be a little bigger.

Another thing to consider is that you WILL need a mouse. I had a surface pro 3 before the battery controller died, and for actual work the touchscren just won't cut it after a few hours.

I think another good option is to just go all logitech. That way you can use the same adapter for both the keyboard and the mouse and not worry about bluetooth connections. I've been happy enough with all my logitech products.

Regarding 1) You've got basically three choices that I can think of.

A) You're going to need to use a custom PCB and build the controls yourself

B) You take apart a USB controller and use those PCBs and all the hardware from that controller to build a control yourself. This is similar to the first, but all the hardware is in one place and a little easier to get your hands on.

C) Just use an external Bluetooth or USB controller. There are some pretty decent ones that should work with the Pi and are designed to be used with a Phone or Tablet, so won't look bad at all if you mount a Pi with screen to them. Something like this one.

Regarding 3) There are tons of screens available up to 7 or 10 inches. Just have a look at aliexpress or ebay. You could even recycle an old tablet screen into an HDMI monitor. Sound is even easier, since the Pi has a 3.5mm audio out jack. All you need to do is wire a couple piezo speakers and a small 5v amp into the audio out jack, or alternatively get a audio Hat for the Pi that has an amp built in (this may be an issue if you get a Screen that plugs into the GPIO).

The 8bitDo SN30 Pro+ is really awesome especially if you’re gonna get into side scrollers or strategy games and the NES and SNES stuff.

It’s super comfortable and pairs very easily to the switch and has a dominant d-pad vs analog stick like the pro controller has.

I think ds4s are only supposed to work correctly with xperia devices. Unless things have changed in the past few years all solutions require some form of root.

I have an alternative solution tho. Instead of the ds4 why not check out 8bitdo's sn30 pro plus. Mine should be arriving tomorrow, but the one review i read makes it seem as great as i hoped. its more similar to a ds4 then an xbox controller, it supports android over bluetooth, and you can charge it with usb c instead of that god aweful micro usb port the ds4 has. I've been using this board weekly for maybe 2 years now. I really like it.

The back lighting is quite a novelty, there's a few fun modes etc. The switches are nice enough, definitely better than a membrane board anyway.

And it's got a nice solid metal construction. It feels much more high quality than you might imagine for the price.

It's a little over the $50, and you might be able to find something else, perhaps without backlighting, for a better price. I'm just recommending this one because I was in a very similar situation to you when I bought it, and it scratched that itch.

You probably won't get original Cherry MX switches and RGB for this price, so here 2 boards with what r/mk deems decent clones. Both of these are branded E-Element, they come with clicky blues and are compatible with pretty much all custom keycap sets made for Cherry MX:

1. If you don't care for the color orange you can get the absolute cheapest RGB keyboard available now as far as I know, the E-Element Z-88 with Outemu clone blue switches (louder than their Cherry MX counterparts) which is on amazon for $52. Every key on it can be set to any of these 7 colors: Red, Yellow, Lime Green, Light Blue, Dark Blue, and Magenta, but that's it. No true RGB.
   
   
2. If you want true RGB and like "floating keys" (visible switches from underneath the keycaps), the E-Element RGB keyboard with Outemu clone switches would probably be right for you.

I've been looking for one for a long time. It was supposed to support the "iCade" mode, but I couldn't get it working even with the non-VR games that were supposed to support iCade.

I had the Razer Onza TE - cheaper than the regular corded Xbox 360 controller, and it had extra features, but they were very.. fragile? Lots of people had issues with them breaking. The first Onza TE I had broke, but replacement was very quick and easy. Then the replacement broke. I haven't bothered to replace it again, but Razer has always been lovely to me with replacing stuff.

Haven't tried the Sabertooth myself, but it's apparently a big improvement compared to the Razer Onza. It's a little pricey, at 79.99, but it comes with a bunch of extra features; 2 programmable bumpers, 4 removable programmable triggers, a detachable cord, and a carrying case. If that's worth it to you, then by all means, do it. I'm looking at getting one.

A regular wired Xbox 360 controller is obviously cheaper.

A Razer Onza is too risky IMO for me to recommend. I've never had something break, and then have the replacement break in the span of a couple months.

I'm afraid you're going to have a hard time with that one. I have never seen such a controller outside Nintendo. Sure, emulating an xbox controller to make a gcc work is annoying, but it's really the only option for playing with your desired joystick. Also, pretty sure only xbox controllers are gonna work for the vast majority of steam games without finding some kind of software workaround.

I have the 4 port mayflash controller adapter. I just switch it to Wii u when I use Dolphin, and to PC when I play RoA. Works fine.
Drivers can be annoying but it shouldn't be that hard to get set up.

Otherwise it's pretty much XBC, or something of lesser quality for the most part.

I do, Keyboards and Mice work fine, never had a problem with Flash drives either (I used 32GB). For Emulation I would recommend a Bluetooth controller because I tried it with an Xbox 360 controller and the huge ass cable was a big hassle so I gave up and got a Bluetooth one. Here it is for the US, 29 dollars. I got mine in Germany for around 31 dollars and don't regret it at all, most games work out of the box like GTA SA, GT Racing 2, Real Racing 3, Modern Combat games, Dead Trigger 1 and 2 and so on. Emulators require a 2 minute configuration but that's not too bad. Especially awesome if you have a Slimport HDMI adapter and play with it on your TV, which is not possible with wired controllers.

If you already have a gamecube controller, or a few of them laying around, your best bet is something like this adapter.

The Shield controller will be getting a refresher soon in the rumor mill. It would be nice since I am really satisfied with the Shield controller.

I like the PS4 dpad more, giving it priority over an Xbox controller.

I checked out the Sn30 Pro Plus with the grips on it and wow I'm blown away by how the great this dpad is. The price point is perfect for my needs as I haven't needed gyro or hd rumble for a switch game in a while. The clickyness of everything made mon hun, dragon quest, and Celeste such a blast, like I almost regret playing 60 hours of that game with analog sticks D: Hoping to check out Hollow Knight soon as well. I guess I'm just bummed that you can't use it to turn on the Switch but beside that this controller's a super good one.

It's very similar to the Wee controller which I have and really love for emulation and also native Android games. (Platformers and top down games). I eventually had a fault with my controller after much use but it sounds like the daqi might be put together a little better. Also FYI I have a 5.5" screen phone and it holds it horizontal or vertical.

I use a USB to 1/4" cable from the Rocksmith video game to record on my Mac, or on an iPad via the Camera Connection Kit. I don't play the game, but the cable is quality. Sounds really great for the price, not much more expensive than the one you linked, plus it's longer and has free shipping. You should consider it!

There are MULTIPLE ways to resolve this:

1. Splitters. Send your computer output into a reverse splitter. This means your computer audio will go out (so you can hear donations, music, etc). It also means your game audio will still go into your headphones by plugging in a 3.5mm cable into the other part of the reverse splitter). However, with this solution you'll likely need a 2nd microphone (which often is better anyways because headphone microphones generally are terrible), or you'll need to do another type of splitter that allows for 2.5mm > 3.5mm and it just turns into a mess.
   
2. A lot of headphones have a mixamp that will let you do exactly what you're looking to do without all of the hassle. I still recommend a 2nd microphone (or something like a modmic with a splitter), to get the best sounding stream.

I have one of these, and I like it a lot. Very simple RGB low profile board you may not even need a wrist rest with. RGB is set on the board, and is limited to like 7 colors, which sucks, because it's got RGB LEDs in it, but they are nice colors. I have one, and it's very nice for the price. Pro Controller is still the best but the SN30 is a good option for a second controller or if you need that nice OG dpad for retro and classic games.

With Zealios V2s, even a 60% keyboard will cost you $60 for the switches alone, leaving you with, at best, $90 for the keyboard itself. As far as I'm aware, your only option at that price point is the 60% GMMK Compact which, with pudding keycaps included, will cost you $88 without shipping. There could also be some cheap kits on Tai Hao or AliExpress that I'm not aware of.

As for alternative tactile switches, the main competitors for Zealios V2s are Holy Pandas and its brothers (similarly priced), Zilents (pricier), Topre (pricier and non-customizable) and Box Royals (Cheaper but may be too tactile). T1 switches are also an option but aren't readily available so you'll have to buy them aftermarket. I'm not too familiar with the more budget-friendly tactile options but Gateron Browns really aren't that bad. You could also try linear switches with some Kaihl Cream switches or Gateron Inks?

But at this price point with Zealios-level expectations, I think your options are very limited. If this is your first foray into mechanical keyboards, it might not be a bad idea to get a prebuilt keyboard like the Anne Pro 2 with your switch of choice or a GMMK customized to your liking.

I recently bought two 8Bitdo SN30 Pro+ controllers and have been playing Tekken 7 very comfortably with them. Worth to have a look, I'm very pleased after a week of heavy use in Tekken 7 and Forza Horizon 4!

The Pokken controller is fantastic for playing, but not for building. The lack of joystick makes using the cursor impossible.

It depends what your budget is. If you want to really save a lot of money, you can go with Cooler Master Devastator II like the other comment said. Those are actually really good for that price. If you want to pay a bit more, and want a relatively cheap rgb mechanical keyboard, I use the Mechanical Eagle Z77.

For my mouse I use the razer deathadder, but that is mostly because I have big hands so I wanted a big comfortable mouse.

I am keeping it after all. I am not wholly satisfied, but it's not too bad. I really wish I could reprogram the keys, though, and not all of that can be done in software.

This is the one I got. Unfortunately its rather expensive, but supposedly much better quality. I managed to get it on sale during black Friday for $88 but you can probably save some money by buying it used and picking up the cables separately. You could also try the pickup the older model used. To my knowledge the main difference is doesn't have customizable equalizer settings, and it needs a separate cable to connect to the controller, whereas the newer model does chat audio through the USB.

I like the controllers with the phone clips because there's more control with how the screen is angled. I don't like the controllers that attach to the sides of the phone (like a Game Gear). I have a Gamesir G4S. It's quite good in feel. The only issue I have is it randomly disconnects now and then, which isn't too big a deal for a game like FFT.

A lot of people like the 8bitdo variants with a separate clip, but they're smaller than I'd like.

I agree. But it's dumb for the game to purposely give players the upper hand just because they choose to play with an inferior input method.

I'm glad this game is play anyway for the sake that it will exponentially increase the amount of time the servers are populated, but I don't feel bad about controllers being mechanically worse. People have known this for years. The developers got this game to run on essentially a pile of garbage. Pick up a $250 laptop, and have at it. Enjoy that mechanical advantage.

There's actually some pretty good telescoping BT controllers for mobile. I have this one and it makes my phone feel a lot like a PSP.

Given that a lot of the indies still require the use of extra buttons that the official NES/SNES controllers don't have, you might want to compromise and get the 8BitDo SN30 Pro+. It's been getting really good reviews, and it's both clearly intended to cater to old-school tastes while also being flexible for use in more modern games.

You should look into the 8bitdo snes controller. It's legit amazing. Feels like a real snes controller + it's both wired and wireless. A bit more expensive than the ibuffalo, but the quality is waaaaay better.

My favorite controller for sidescroller games has always been 8Bit-do's Sn30 line of controllers. It's $45, so a bit more than what you were looking for, but the d-pad is leagues better IMO. It's about $12 less than a pro controller.

It needs to be supported by the game. As far as I know, Fortnite is the only game that actually supports it.

For other games though, there are adapters that you can buy for Xbox/PS4 that allow a keyboard/mouse to emulate the controller input though. I can't vouch for how well they work though, I've never used one.

Just about every PC controller made in the last 10 years has the ability to pretend to be an XBOX controller.

Find a controller you like and are comfortable with.

My recommendations for PC are either a GameSir or a USB GameCube controller.

Buy a Razer Naga (not the Hex one) or a Corsair Scimitar. These have both got lots of thumb buttons. This assumes your brother in law can use his right hand. Just map the buttons how he wants in the appropriate software (Razer Synapse or Corsair Utility Engine) and save the profile to the device itself (IMPORTANT). Now buy one of those mouse-to-PS4 devices (like this one, for example). Now your brother in law can use the mouse to aim, and the thumb buttons to move and throw grenades or whatever!

I choose the Razer Saber Elite Gaming Controller for Xbox 360 for use on PC. I have been really happy with the quality and general feel of it.

I also have a couple of cheap POWER A Xbox One Spectra Controllers for when my nieces and nephews are over so we can play some co-op games.

I have two of the snes30 pads and they came with usb cables. I never tried using them wired but I would assume that they do work. Great controllers though. I got one that is snes style and the other is pal snes style so I could distinguish between player 1 and 2.

I have one of these 8bitdo SFC30 controllers and I absolutely love it. I've used it so much over the last year and a half that I'm very likely going to buy one of their NES30 Pro controllers. I think the NES30 Pro is better suited for PSP emulation and for use with a lot of indie games I have on steam (e.g. Rogue Legacy, Binding of Isaac, Risk of Rain).

I much perfer the d-pad over the analogue stick. However, I don't really like the Xbox or PS4 controllers, I personally use a Hori Fighting Commander. I've been using it since I started playing and I feel like it's a very well made controller for people who like to use the d-pad for fighting games.

How about the Razer Sabertooth. Its a revised Xbox360 controller with a MUCH better D-Pad. I have one for almost 2 years and its like brand new, very solid materials. I didnt want wireless since I would be playing in front of the PC, the cable is very long though. I dont like the fancy lights either, you can turn them off.

This is a link someone else posted for the ipega. it's only $24 and it has worked perfect for me. I like everything about it.

I suggest taking a look at this controller from 8bitdo. I use a variant of it for emulation and I absolutely love it. Only thing though is if you want to clip it to your phone you have to buy the mount separately and it doesn’t seem the mount officially supports the Core either so you might run the risk of incompatibility.

Don't think of them as remembering what letter is on the button. Think of them as positions. Top buttons are punches. Bottom buttons are kicks. Left side is weaker, right side (in the case of a controller, right most side is the triggers) is stronger.

Something like this can really help some people because all of your punches and kicks are face buttons, though they're definitely not necessary.

You'll get a very fuzzy, too-quiet signal. You need an interface of some kind, which takes the signal your guitar is putting out and puts it at a level your computer is happy with. These almost all will use USB in to your computer.

Cheap option. I tried something similar and had noticeable latency (delay) that was bothering me.

Slightly more expensive option. Yes, Rocksmith is a game. The interface cable they developed is good tech though and can be used for recording. I get a decent signal, no latency. It's how I record demos when I want something quick and I'm not looking for studio quality.

The most expensive/best/most versatile options. These are home-studio interfaces that can take a variety of inputs (your guitar direct, a microphone for instruments or vocals, some of them will take midi controller inputs) and convert them into computer-friendly signals.

Thanks for your response. That sounds like it may be a good workaround, though I don't have access to a Wiimote at the moment, so that's an additional expense... But it's a good idea.

Seems to be a slightly older model that isn't on their website, but is marketed as being PC bluetooth compatible, so maybe I'll give it a try. Hopefully it will work with a superNT in the future, I'm considering getting one.

Edit: I'm going to give this method a go with the newer 2.4G model and see if I can fool Windows into thinking it is a WiiController... I'll report back my findings for science.

This is specifically for Xbox one, hooking it up is really easy and it comes with all the cables you need. You don't have to hook up anything to your controller for chat, the headset into the mixamp works just fine.


Also, you do need to hook up the mixamp to a PC if you want to change the eq settings, otherwise you have Astro's default settings.

Depends on what you need from it. If you want it to be roughly the same size as the standard surface keyboard then you don't have many options and, given the reviews, all of those options are going to give you a worse typing feel.

If you can go a bit bigger then you can go with something like the Logitech K400 or go mechanical with something like the Anne Pro 2 which is going to be significantly thicker than the Logitech but will offer far better typing feel.

PS4/PS3 & PC - I own this fightpad, many people say its the best fightpad on the market, I would concur.

This is basically what you'd need for XB1. Comes with like a 6-foot optical cable and it's pretty nice because you can balance game/party chat and boost your headphone volume. It's a bit overpriced, imo, but it works.

For PS4, you could use the PS4 version or just buy the Sony Gold Wireless Headset which includes a wireless USB dongle and get the same thing for $60-90.

Just get the Fighting Commander. It's like a couple more dollars expensive than this one but it's much bigger and has a better D-pad altogether. They even have one for Xbox, too.

I have the full, non tenkeyless, version of this with backlighting. This model to be exact. It has a metal faceplate, the switches feel very nice, although I have never used MX blues, only reds, and overall it feels like a premium product. AMA

Will these natively connect to the SNES classic? or is there some sort of adapter I need. The only games I really want to play that I haven't already are: the pocky and rocky games, gundam wing endless waltz, Final Fantasy III, The Donkey Kong Country Trilogy, Chrono Trigger, and Mega Man X2. If the SNES classic plays these back with minimal audio and video differences I'll be set! I know Earthworm Jim 2 suffers from poor audio but I'l prob never play that.

I was in the same boat as you and due to the backorders of the Ducky, so I got an Anne Pro 2 and I am in love with the thing. It's 60%, got RGB, plus optional bluetooth. Some people report getting boards with faulty lights, but I ordered mine from Amazon in case it was broken and Amazon's replacement policy is probably better than a lot of other sites. Luckily mine had no issues and am using it everyday, mainly for gaming. Got mine with Gateron Browns and have no issues.
