One thing I have learned over the years is that while quality can be expensive, it doesn't have to be. Also, what one person loves and thinks is the "softest set of sheets ever!!!!" can feel like sandpaper to another person. (OK that's two things. Oh well.)

I have major sleep and texture issues, so I have spent a lot of years perfecting my bedding. After much searching and much cost, I ended up finding out that the Target UltraSoft sheets are my second favorite ever (to some discontinued Lands' End knit, their current knit is not the same.) I love that these sheets come in individuals, so you can buy just the ones you need. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I just got a new pillowcase from Sheex at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and it is amazing. Someday I will get their Bamboo Sheet Set as my summer/alternate sheets.

For blankets, I'm a big fan of the warm fuzzy ones. Target again has some from a couple of their brands (Threshold and Shabby Chic) but I find they're not quite as good quality as they used to be. I have recently acquired a new SherpaSoft blanket from Bed, Bath, and Beyond which is amazing. It is thick, soft, and warm and happened to be on clearance plus I was able to use one of their coupons for it.

I absolutely love a down comforter, but I'm allergic to actual down. I stumbled across the Pinzon Down Alternative comforter at Amazon, I have had mine for nearly 5 years and it is still in excellent condition. Duvet cover is super personal depending on style, but if you have a thing for flannel, I highly recommend the Pinzon flannel duvet cover as well. Another thing I've had for years and love, the Pinzon 190-gram is my favorite flannel, even above LL Bean and Lands' End.

Due to some surprise issues (hello, holes in my former (not the Target) favorite sheets!) I also ended up going on a spree and replacing some bedding basics last weekend. I have a memory foam topper on my mattress, which means I needed a cotton mattress pad/cover otherwise my topper turned into a heat-generating slab of concrete. I tried something from a local store that didn't work, ended up back at Amazon for the Zen Bamboo Ultra Soft Mattress Topper. Slept on it last night and it was fabulous.

And finally, after a couple of failures, I stumbled across this adjustable! pillow from Coop Home Goods on Amazon, which is absolutely amazing. I like a soft pillow but need neck support, but most pillows are too thick for me. I love that you can simply zip the pillow open and remove a bit of the fill, or add more if you like a firmer pillow (they sell additional fill linked from the pillow page.)

Congratulations on your new house, and good luck with your bedding shopping! A well-attired bed makes the whole experience so much nicer.

I got https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UYG8HRS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Which is sold by Sleep on Latex via amazon ( https://sleeponlatex.com/pages/our-story-2 )- who is mentioned here frequently. The issue, however, is that they only seem to sell dunlop and from what I tried in the store I liked the bounce of talalay.

I got a 2" soft which will augment my mattress' current 2" comfort layer. I was going to go for a 3" but my wife is a back sleeper and so 2" felt like a good middle ground.

I also went with them because it ships via prime and reading the feedback they are responsive in case a return is needed and will help facilitate shipping back a giant king sized slab of foam. =)

I'm hopeful I can figure something out! My next step would be moving towards diymattress.net since they sell talalay toppers. Which on that note, I found their website section on how to build a mattress interesting.

Reviews can only tell you so much unfortunately. Everyone is a little different in what they want.
Goods about that mattress: Uses the combi-zone coils from Leggett and Platt, which are good coils. They aren't revolutionary technology that that Voila came up with and there are some options for getting them in a mattress. http://www.mattresses.net/ulhypoco.html
Another good is that it does use some latex in the comfort layers.

The bad: I have no clue what the other foam layers are, what their density is and whether they will last. Memory foam layers should be at least 4 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) or 5 pcf density (especially if you are heavier)
Polyfoam should be at least 1.8 with 2 being the minimum for heavier people.

If they are willing to tell you more about the densities of the foams and you are ok with everything, then it might not be a terrible buy.

However, if they don't tell you what's inside the mattress, it's best to assume the worst and potentially move on to something else.

That link I included is a mattress that I got and have had good success with so far. It might be worth considering along with other options. It could also be part of your DIY project as you can order those components separate from the mattress. They also make a slow recovery latex that is supposed to be more like memory foam.

All things to think about, and good luck. It's not a bad idea to go down the rabbit hole when researching. https://www.themattressunderground.com/

Edit: DIY
http://www.mattresses.net/copocobylean.html
http://www.mattresses.net/kibawozimaco.html (the coils are 9inch, get the 12 inch to include the topper in the mattress)
For the comfort layer these are two options.
http://www.mattresses.net/puslrelato.html
https://www.amazon.com/Density-Elastic-Memory-Foam-Mattress/dp/B006QWWW5C?th=1

The advantage of going the DIY route is that you can customize if you don't like the feel. for example, say you get the memory foam, but it doesn't quite cushion or support as well as you would like. You can add a medium or firm 3 inch latex layer and have the memory foam on top of the mattress. Of you can replace the memory foam in 5 years when it starts to wear out because the coils will still be good.

I was on the forth floor of Murray last year and will be again this coming year. You will need to bring an Ethernet cord for your PS4, as well as a coax cable for your TV. Try and make both of them a minimum of 6 feet. Most of the time you will need them to wrap around the room to make it to your devices. My coax cable was like 15 feet and super cheap. The first week everywhere is going to be sold out of them so get them ahead of time.

My roommate couldn't keep from stealing my stuff from the big fridge so I had to get my own (again, something sold out the first week of classes).

There isn't too many outlets in the room so a power strip is helpful, one with usb ports at the end saves space.

You shouldn't need a safe unless you really need to protect something extra carefully. There is a lock on your door as well as the door to the hall way. Connected to your desk is cabinet that can be locked, something like this will work.

Also, the most underrated thing I brought was a 2 inch memory foam type padding to go on top of the mattress something above an inch will do wonders. I think I got mine from target for like $40 and it really is amazing compared to the standard mattress.

In Murray you can change the temperature with the thermostat in the room so I never needed a fan, though I had the one on the ceiling on all the time.

Mattress protector/encasement: Hypoallergenic bag to seal bed bugs, dust mites, and spills in/out of mattress. https://www.amazon.com/Encasement-Waterproof-Hypoallergenic-Breathable-Protector/dp/B00Z06F2OI/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Mattress+protector&qid=1562627220&s=gateway&sr=8-4

Mattress topper: Egg crate or gel foam that is placed on top of the mattress for extra comfort. https://www.amazon.com/Memory-Foam-Topper-Mattress-Sleep/dp/B01GICXDN4/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=Mattress+topper+twin+xl&qid=1562627405&s=gateway&sr=8-6

Mattress pad: Lightly padded/quilted but otherwise similar to a fitted sheet, placed below sheets to protect mattress & hold everything together. (Kinda like underwear for your mattress.) https://www.amazon.com/Gilbin-College-Quilted-Mattress-Polyester/dp/B00MGWK06E/ref=sr_1_9?crid=HBFAAZPF1KD5&keywords=mattress+pad+twin+xl&qid=1562627643&s=gateway&sprefix=Mattress+pad+er+twin+xl%2Caps%2C146&sr=8-9

Mattress protectors are a good idea if you have dust mite allergies, or have concerns about the cleanliness of the mattress. Topper is good if you are used to a plush pillow-top type mattress or find the mattress too firm. Mattress pad is really useful if you are using one of the other two things, or to add a little buffer if the mattress material is plastic or rough.

ETA: You can find combo protector/pads, topper/pads, etc. too. So many options.

I share most of your sentimates regarding air mattresses. For that reason, this year I decided to spend some extra moolah on getting a nice one. It's made out of a kevlar like material and doesnt leak at all. It's super light and rolls up to the size of a sleeping bag (or less to be honest).

Also I bought a REALLY nice 3 or 4 inch thick foam mattress that fits perfectly on it. Those with a solid sheet and I'm going to be sleeping soundly.

the herb Lavender is known to help with sleep a lot, you can burn Lavender incense like a hour or so before you go to bed, make some tea with it, make a dream pillow or ever buy a Lavender infused mattress topper like this.

https://www.amazon.com/LUCID-2-inch-5-Zone-Lavender-Mattress/dp/B01H2N2G3Q

note: I hear that Lavender tea can be very strong it might be best to mix it with something else.

A mattress topper will make your bed feel ten times more comfortable

As for me I would like this tea pot

Congrats on the job and good luck!

Absolutely get new bedsheets then, maybe a new stuffy, and maybe a squishy mattress topper so it feels different when you lay on it. Consider painting the frame too, but have friends over to help you, but don't do that one immediately.

Make it different. Trust me on that one. Move the art on the walls around too. Create some tangible physical changes.

u/stealthxstar · 3 pointsr/SuperMorbidlyObese

i have that exact topper and it is amazing. I'm at 330 lbs at 5'7 for reference. i got it because i got a new mattress that was very firm (need it to be or it would sag horribly under my weight) and it is a godsend. I am a side sleeper exclusively.

it isnt noticably warm to sleep on, although i have a waterproof cover over it (like a fitted sheet with a rubber layer) and then normal sheets. but i do not notice it being warmer than a typical mattress.

it is very plush and it has held up extremely well to weight and body heat in the 2 and a half years i have had it. (using it at minimum 6 nights a week, usually all 7). it is noticeably discolored from heat in the apot i sleep on, but it is just as plush as it was when i first got it (i know because the other half of the queen mattress is virtually unused and flipping the topper feels exactly the same). i do not know if it absorbs body oils, and if that would make it smell, because like i said i use a water proof sheet to avoid that.

it did smell a bit funky the first few days but after a week it went away, and it was unnoticeable under the sheets (i used it for a month before getting the waterproof sheet, so that observation is through one layer of cotton sheets).

i definitely recommend getting the topper!!!!!

edit: sorry i have the 2inch one!!

u/j3utton · 1 pointr/GoodValue

People have already said it and I'm going to agree with them. As long as the mattress you have now is still good, just get a topper for it. When the whole mattress needs to be replaced, look into investing into a quality memory foam mattress then. In the meantime, save some money.

Toppers come in various densities that affect the quality of it. Higher the density the better usually. We bought this one about 8 months ago and are (so far) very happy with it.

For an aging mattress your best option to extend it's life is a latex topper. For maximum comfort I recommend Talalay poured latex.

One if the most economical options is Dreamfoam Bedding's latex topper. It comes in several sizes. It's a 3" inch thick topper with no cover. This is standard practice. You put it under a mattress cover than put your sheets over it. A queen size will run you $354 but there is usually no sales tax. Amazon also offers 6 month zero interest if that helps.

The $600 max is really limiting you. Otherwise you could go with flexuscomfort.com , sleepez.com , or sedonasleep.com which all offer queen-size mattresses with split-firmness latex layers.

Even if you give up on the split firmness to save money, you are still limiting yourself at $600 since presumably one of you is over 200 pounds, and people over 200 pounds need a mattress with higher-density foam, which is more expensive than the cheap foam found in many cheap mattresses. If you could go up to $712, then brooklynbedding.com would be a good choice, since it uses high quality materials suitable for people of any weight. (I'd consider returning that frame if you could, and then put the money to a better mattress -- you can use the mattress on the floor until you are able to afford a foundation or bed frame)

If you absolutely must stick to $600 max, then the best I can recommend would be to go the DIY route. You can get a 6-in thick polyfoam core for $219 plus shipping here:

https://diymattress.net/products/foam-base-core-certipur-us?variant=30901531788

then you can get a 3-inch Talalay blended-latex layer here for $300 plus shipping:

http://www.kttenterprises.com/price-warranty-density-chart.html

(or you could get two 2-in thick twin-XL size latex layers, different firmnesses, and cut them down in width so they fit on the queen-size core)

And last, a mattress cover. Here is one for $70 :

https://www.amazon.com/Soft-Heaven-Mattress-Cover-Hypoallergenic/dp/B00WB8M9BC/

or one for $55 :

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F4IEXH4/

That might all come out a little above $600 after you add in shipping.

So this isn't gel but if you can afford it or have really generous gifters I love Tempurpedic.

Here is an example of the gel and they come in all different inches.

u/notanamphibian · 1 pointr/berkeley

I have this one and I actually really like it. Super affordable too. Made the on-campus beds much more bearable. I have the 2-inch and that's been good enough for my needs. :)

u/Inigo93 · 17 pointsr/camping

Go buy yourself a good foam pad. Not something for backpacking or the like. Something like this. Do that. Bring a couple of handwarmers into bed with ya, and you'll be amazed at how warm it will be. Not much else required, really.

u/notFREEfood · 1 pointr/berkeley

I'm making this recommendation not because I had one and liked it, but because I didn't have one and it's probably the one thing that would have increased my comfort greatly.

I found this on amazon for $50, but tbh I have no idea whether it actually is a good product or not. However as long as it holds up to use and doesn't give off an offensive odor it should be appreciated.
