I love my TENS unit. I bought the unit from my physical therapist (PCP wrote a script, too, so my FSA covered it). I get my pads in bulk from Amazon.
Having the unit has helped me be more functional while in pain, as it's been great to take the edge off and I don't need to take my pen pain meds. It has also been helpful with cramps and spasms in my legs and back.
This is the exact unit I have...it's a champ. (Been going for almost 3 years, runs on 9volts, cables are in great shape and haven't shorted. Usage is between 4-5 days a week, generally for a few hours each day).

I regularly use a TENS for other issues I have.
Talked to my OB and she was onboard for me using it during pregnancy and labor if I desired.
I got one through my insurance - it was astronomical and didn't feel as good as the "medical grade" TENS units they use at a PT facility.
I returned that one (it was like 400$ - absurd), and tried a few different ones.
I bought this one from Amazon - it is amazing and does an excellent job for much cheaper(30$)! Weee!
I also bought these pads as replacement.
But seriously - it is far, far better than the one I received through prescription and it is the third one I tried off of Amazon (after learning about it from others with my genetic disorder). Highly recommended!
Not sure if you have ever used one before - but definitely make sure you understand how to put the pads on correctly before you use it!

I need these from my health and personal care wishlist. They're electrodes for a TENS machine, which helps with my muscle and joint pain, after I have seizures. I only have four, right now, and the adhesive is getting weak, so they don't work anymore.
Here's a smaller, cheaper one, so others can get more.
Your opiate point also reminds me of something I went through: opioid-induced hyperalgesia. Basically, with long term opiate use, the thing that's supposed to treat pain causes you more pain and makes you hypersensitive to stimuli.
Also, I went to let you know you can get one for $25 on Amazon for yourself, aswell as enough pads for a very long time for $20. Make them last by not changing the pads very often, even when they loose stickiness they still have the conductive gel so I use cheap medical tape to stick them on.
