I love sandalwood. My lady loves sandalwood on me. Here are a few of my opinions on sandalwood and sandalwood-inspired scents.

St. Charles Shave Santalum Album Extract: (EdT) This is a one-note sandalwood. Quite sweet and creamy, and almost gourmand in character. US$18 for 2 oz.

St. Charles Shave Limited Edition Sandalwood from Wood: (EdT) still a one-note sandalwood, but deeper and richer. Less sweet, a bit more woody. A friend of mine pronounced that it has "more gravitas."

Herve Leger Homme: (EdT) This is artificial sandalwood (ebonal, and maybe okumal) but smells quite nice. Brightened up with ginger and yuzu (a hint of fruity acidity compared to a creamy sandalwood) and lasts a long, long time. Unfortunately, this has been discontinued. Dangit!

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Cologne: This is a sophisticated scent, with some lavender, floral notes, and patchouli, with plenty of powderiness (to my nose.) The sandalwood isn't very present at all, though it's a nice scent. Garnered compliments from my lady despite its sweetness and floral notes. Not very long-lasting, and wants a separate atomizer. (Used as a splash, it's too powerful, and cloying!)

MPeG Santal Noble: Edt - A favorite of mine. Not super sandalwoody, but very woody. Smells like freshly-sawn cedar planks, along with amber, coffee, and spices. A superb scent, though not sandalwood-forward.

Karnataka Mysore Sandalwood Soap: This is a soap with actual Santalum Album oil (this is the "true" sandalwood, as opposed to the less complex "Australian sandalwood" and "Hawaiian sandalwood" oils.) Very little sweetness. The "soap" scent comes through clearly, but smells natural, as opposed to artificial. Over time, the sandalwood scent diminishes, but doesn't smell less "real," only less strong.

Every Man Jack Sandalwood Bodywash: This is a gel, in a plastic showergel bottle. It's not real sandalwood, but is pleasant enough. The scent doesn't last beyond the shower, but my lady likes how it smells as I use it. Sweeter than Karnataka, and more artificial, but not bad for everyday shower duty.

Caress Endless Kiss Sandalwood Vanilla body wash: No. Just no. Got it home and was uninspired. I added actual sandalwood oil and actual vanilla extract in an attempt to salvage this, but it could not be done. You'd have better luck adding fragrance oils to an unscented body wash, in my opinion.

Proraso Red (sandalwood) shaving cream: This is a great shaving cream, expecially for the price. The sandalwood is very earthy, and not very sweet to my nose. Lathering is excellent, lubrication is great. The scent doesn't last after the shave, but it's great while it does. I carry a tube in my gym bag, and also use the stuff at home. Very nice earthy sandalwood scent.

Nature de France Sandalwood Deodorant: This is an earthy sandalwood, quite similar to the Proraso cream. Not sweet, not overly creamy or woody. No aluminum, so it's not an antiperspirant, just a deodorant. Still, I love the smell.

Ogallala Bay Rum with Sandalwood aftershave: This is an aftershave, based on Ogallala's spice-heavy Bay Rum scents (cowboy-style, as opposed to pirate-style "pure" bay rum scents.) The sandalwood isn't particularly realistic, but it is pleasant, and has gotten me more than a few compliments. It's a very sweet sandalwood, to the point where I sometimes find it a bit cloying. My lady never fails to compliment me, though, if I've used it, regardless of whether I tell her that I have. Needs to be shaken and -for best result- applied once your face is dry. Good skin conditioning.

u/BostonPhotoTourist · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

I was actually asked that very question about 10 days ago. I've copied the response below:

Okay, so I'll answer the question in two parts:

Aftershaves

This is a tough one. There aren't that many fougère aftershaves that are both good and inexpensive. The best I can recommend would be, in order of price:

Antonio Puig Agua Lavanda (ignore the literature and just trust me on this)

Pour un Homme de Caron Aftershave Balm, which is both soothing to the skin and one of the greatest lavender fragrances ever built. It's been a little battered by time and reformulation, but is still a masterpiece. Simple, unobtrusive lavender, vanilla, and clean musk.

D.R. Harris Arlington is one of the most revered fougères in shaving, though I must confess that I'm not terribly fond of its sweetness. I find it rather too lemony for me, which gives it an air of lemon pez.

Perfumes

I feel rather odd saying this but the absolute best compliment to Imperiale, in my view at least, is not a fougère at all, but a leather fragrance called Knize ("kuh-nee-sha") Ten. It's a dark, dry, old-style leather, the preferred fragrance of James Dean, and one of the most richly complex fragrances I've ever encountered. It's gorgeous stuff, jointly created by two of the greatest perfumers in history. That said, it's an extraordinarily divisive fragrance, so I'd order a sample of it if you think it might be for you. If you need recommendations for sample dealers, just let me know.

If you're looking for lighter and cleaner, I can recommend four brilliant fougères that would work beautifully with Imperiale:

  1. Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel: A slightly peculiar but eerily beautiful fougère with heavy emphasis on petitgrain and iris. Bitter and powdery, with rich oak moss base notes, and one of my favorite fragrances of all time. It's dirt cheap to boot.

  2. Penhaligon's English Fern: Perhaps the most "classic" of the fougères on this list, though it's heavier on clover and anise than most other fougères I've encountered, which really plays up the "soapy green" aspect of such scents. Extremely popular in the shaving world and very much a "mature" fragrance; I never feel old enough when I wear it.

  3. Azzaro Pour Homme: The only aromatic fougère on my list, this is one of the great masterpieces of perfumery and so historically significant that there are six individual perfumers who claim to created it. It carries a slightly bitter caraway note and has a bit of a rough beginning, but transforms into a beautiful, airy fougère within about 15 minutes. It's quite inexpensive, especially for what it is, and a little goes a long way.

  4. Guerlain Mouchoir de Monsieur: The "Gentleman's Handkerchief" is my absolute favorite perfume of all time (and, coincidentally, the one I wore to my law school graduation). It was created in 1905 as the brighter, dirtier cousin to Aimé Guerlain's masterpiece Jicky. It carries a lot of lemon and a considerable dose of civet, which turns to a beautiful velvety power on my skin. There's really no replacement for smelling it in person, but it's unfortunately very difficult to come by in US department stores or even perfume specialty shops, so I recommend ordering a sample of it (and Jicky, if you're interested in the perfume that made Guerlain famous).

    Hope that helps.

To get a really close "baby butt smooth" shave then you will usually have to finish with an against the grain pass when using a DE safety razor. Getting the Muhle R41 (which I do not own and have never used) won't really help you with getting the same smoothness from only a with the grain or across the grain pass. I think you'd just be more likely to get razor burn. Using a mild razor while you are still perfecting your technique will just help keep you from getting razor burn and make your shaves more enjoyable. If and when you do want to upgrade to a better razor and retire the old plastic WS then look at the Edwin Jagger DE89. It is on the mild side but reasonably priced and the usual recommendation around here for a first razor. The slightly different model numbers just denote differences in the handle, if it has crosshatching or not. Or if you really want to try an aggressive, get the Muhle. As we say here, your milage may vary so whatever works best for you, just do it.

You should definitely try a blade sampler pack. While most razor blades will do the job some brands will just be better (less tugging, less burn, smoother shave, etc) for you. For me, my favorites are Gillette Super Platinums in the blue packaging and Bolzano Superinox. I can only find one blade sampler pack on Amazon UK and it really sucks. Instead maybe get this one from Shaving.ie. I haven't ordered from them myself but they have a good reputation here and I've seen them recommended a lot. Maybe add a pack of Bolzano, Astra Platinum, and/or Shark blades.

I gotta say my absolute favourite summer fragrance is Clinique Happy for Men, but I'm UK so not sure what it could be for you guys. Here it can be anything from £25 for a small bottle, to between £38 and £45 for a bigger size. [Going through Amazon I see it is £37] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clinique-Happy-Toilette-Homme-Spray/dp/B000277N88/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394954926&sr=8-1&keywords=clinique+happy+for+men). ed- I checked on US Amazon just to not be lazy so [Here is the US price] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clinique-Happy-Toilette-Homme-Spray/dp/B000277N88/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394954926&sr=8-1&keywords=clinique+happy+for+men).
A more musky but clean fragrance I just picked up is called 'Arber' which is actually from The Body Shop, and I'm taken to understanding they are few in US maybe? But they do exist there and am certain they deliver. ed- I decided to do the same here too [There's also 40% off site-wide and only $5.99 shipping as standard apparently] (http://www.thebodyshop-usa.com/men-product/men-product-fragrance/arber-eau-de-toilette.aspx).

CK One has always been a good interchangeable smell, they have a summer variant but One is the classic.

Also used to wear CK Eternity and that has a nice fruity texture about it!

Hope any of that is useful

u/Teknodruid · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

Ok, so my old lady... a lot of her friends, and actually about a dozen complete strangers have all said they -love- this smell.

Old Spice - Matterhorn

Pair it with the same scent anti-perspirantdeoderant

Then as a side....

Curve Kick I think it smells like cotton candy personally... but I get a lot of attention from the smell... and never a negative response.

Soul Little easier on the budget, also very well liked by the ladies.

Burberry Brit and lastly a good masculine smell... be careful, this will make girls do what Axe claims... this is a good 'date' cologne.

So, just my humble opinions on what has worked for me - everyone is different... YMMV, good luck

u/comeclosertome · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm gaining a new appreciation for 'classics' within the body care realm. I just picked up a bottle of Brut, yes that Brut, and I really find it to be a top-tier scent. I feel like I should be bellowing from a mountaintop when I have it on. Like many, I received it as a Christmas gift frequently during my youth and failed to appreciate it, but if one can dissociate the image of old men from the fragrance it's really quite pristine, especially at the extraordinarily low price point.
I think this is one of the reasons I like going to the barbershop so much, all of those things you smell are so heavenly and I can instantly recall happy memories of other, older men from my life.

I've also picked up some Brylcreem which has actually tempered my insanely thick and curly hair quite well, and I now wear it as a preliminary layer before I put in my pomade. Helps me embrace my curls and control them better, rather than trying to force some unnatural part that never quite worked well for my non-thin, non-straight hair.

Does anyone have any more recommendations for classic/old-school products for skin/body/grooming?

Florida Water. Always Florida Water.

I am pretty sure it's been claimed to have the benefits of any and all, it's basically full of essential waters, and you can sometimes buy it at the dollar tree. Or amazon, whatever you prefer.

http://www.luckymojo.com/catalogue.html

Lucky Mojo is a great go-to for wooey stuff. The woman who runs it also collects / sells things in the same vein of old timey and curio like. Not necessarily woo.

I think you can use that as a starting point and find distributors from there :)

http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatpharmacy.html

The Chinese healing bit gets me all tingly even thinking of the smells.

u/commiecat · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I like Dominica and Royall brands. Dominica is much more affordable. I've never used Ogallala but have heard really good things about it as well.

There's a ridiculously long bay rum thread on Straight Razor Place. Comments on just about every bay rum out there if you have the time to read. Most of the brands are addressed in the first few posts.

If you've never smelled/used bay rum then go small to start or see if you can find somewhere local that carries the scent, just to see if you like it. Always hard to commit to buying something online not knowing if you'll like it or not.

u/enim · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

As a guy in that age range, who has gone cologne shopping with not one, but 2 girls at the same time, heres what I wear:

Spring/Summer - Lacoste

Cooler weather - Hugo Boss

Other Cooler weather - Gucci Pour Homme II

I will say that I wear the Lacoste a little heavier, and the Gucci very light - when I wear them. I'm favoring the HB right now a lot.

Realize, though, that not every cologne matches every guy. You need to find something you like, and I do recommend finding something a girl likes off your skin. There are pheromones at play here.

Please, stay away from cheap body sprays…

Instead, buy some 4711 by Muelhens. It's $30 for a big, 27 oz bottle. They have smaller sizes of course, but a big bottle is cheap and will last you a long time, even if you spray with reckless abandon. Plus it's a classy, classic that's super clean, crisp and fresh. Highly rated and well regarded for a "cheapie".

Or, you can get some Al Rehab Silver roll-on oil. It lasts a while and is cheap ($4 for a roll-on vial). Often compared to Creed Silver Mountain Water, of course it's not the same quality/scent, but a number of people like it.

"Sulu by Star Trek is a Aromatic fragrance for men. Top notes are lavender, petitgrain and lemon; middle notes are water lily, coriander and juniper berries; base notes are sandalwood, amber and white musk. "

Don't forget the Excelsior version... oh and the limited to only 300 exclusive San Diego Comic-Con edition :)

"SULU for men is the perfect cologne for the man who does everything, whether that's cataloging exotic plants, collecting antique firearms, or piloting ancient helicopters and advanced starships. It's more than just choosing to live your life with style; SULU dives straight to the soul and allows you to release your own intergalactic Man of Mystery. That jaunty, fearless swashbuckler of a man who, whether the's wielding a rapier in a swordfight or commanding the helm of a Constitution-class starship, is always ready for action. SULU Pour Homme. Oh my!"

u/WillieM96 · 1 pointr/marriedredpill

Excellent article- thank you!

What is your opinion of solid cologne? I didn’t even know they existed until this week. I picked up one of these Mr. Gladstone scents and I’ve been pleased. One thing that I never liked about most colognes were the top notes- they smelled too...sharp to me (if that makes any sense). This solid cologne seems to avoid that initial scent so the smell is consistent and pretty long lasting.

It’s also mild, which is important for me- I’m a doctor and can’t be overwhelming patients with intense odors. I can finally wear a cologne to work!

u/Gingor · 2 pointsr/AskMen

Taylor of old Bond Street Sandalwood Cologne. Smells good, the ladies love it.

>A classic fougere fragrance with top notes of geranium, lavender, rosemary and liquid amber supported by a heart of carnation, fern and orange blossom resting on a sumptuous base of patchouli, sandalwood, vetivert, powdery musk and rock rose. Contains Cedarwood oil, Geranium oil, Guaicwood oil, Lavandin Grosso, Patchouli oil, Rosemary oil and Vetiver oil.

u/gotthelowdown · 2 pointsr/AskMen

Well, you've sold me on Teakwood cologne. Not expensive, too. Added to Amazon wishlist.

Although I wish there were customer reviews and it was shipped and sold by Amazon, not a third-party merchant.

You should be a copywriter, lol.

Reminds me of the advertising executives in this movie:

Crazy People - Truth In Advertising

Their boss was less than impressed:

A Scene from the movie Crazy People

Quote:

> Teakwood from Bath & Body Works makes me want to fuck myself.

>Get the lotion too. I have the Teakwood body wash and Bourbon lotion and holy shit, I can't stop smelling myself.

>That's the one. The Bourbon is quite good too. They smell like sex. Not actual sex, but what sex should smell like.

>I think they're about $40 CAD in store. They also have body washes, body sprays, and really good lotions in those varieties.

Everyday wear I'm a fan of Gucci Guilty which is reasonably priced enough for everyday wear.

And for something different it might sound crazy but Victoria Secret sells a men fragrance line called Very Sexy that is very refreshing. Worth a smell for the uninitiated.

I rotate through all of these and am quite fond of them.

I've seen this as cheap as $6 on Amazon:

The packaging is cheap as hell, and it doesn't last super long, but it's a nice fresh clean lavender scent. Rumored to be the go-to aftershave of Frank Sinatra. It has a shower gel flanker that's also nice.

Hmmm, Alexandria makes a Layton clone called Royal Equistrian . https://alexandriafragrances.com/products/royal-equestrian
Other than that id throw d&g the one out there as well as jpg lemale or cuba a gold https://www.amazon.com/Cuba-Gold-3-30-Ounce/dp/B001ALPKXA slightly better clone of lemale.
Lastly id recommend Mugler pure tonka and bvlgari black

Physically clean with Florida Water. Psychically clean with Vesta Powder. Use the Vesta powder thus.

u/HurkyJerkyDancer · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

You piqued my interest. How long does this stuff last compared to conventional, liquid colognes? At $22.00, I'll just order it blind.

OP, if you're a cheap ass like myself, drugstore aftershaves are great for day-to-day scents, imo. I usually wear Pinaud-Clubman. Some say it's "old man smell" but I think it's classic. I also like Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood as a cheaper option.

Here you go, on Amazon for $13. (Ignore the "for women," it's the same stuff, just a quirk of the Amazon listing.)

I've used Victoria's Secret Very Sexy for Him for years. I can barely smell so I can't really comment on the fragance, but women always complement me on it.

u/hermeslyre · 3 pointsr/fragrance

Cuba gold, royal, and prestige are the 3 most popular online. I don't have prestige.

I bought red and black too, but they aren't very good next to gold and royal. I have a 50ml of 1 million and royal smells very close to that.

They go on sale for about $5-8 online regulary. I picked all 4 of mine up for about $5 each. Amazon has that price on gold now, but it's and add-on item.
