Best bang for your buck starter guns will be the G&G CM16 ($180 CAD with free shipping) and the G&G CM16 Raider ($200 CAD) if you think he'll want to put attachments on it in the future.

For eye protection you can get him the Pyramex I-force goggles ($25 CAD off of Amazon) or the Pyramex V2G-XP (also $25 CAD on Amazon), that'll come down to personal preference on which style he prefers. For face protection the OneTigris foldable face mesh ($23 off of Amazon) allows the user to look down the sights well while still offering proper protection.

What I've listed above is probably the simplest and most economical beginner setup for Airsoft up here in Canada. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

And don't forget to check out my list of Canadian Airsoft Retailers to compare prices and see what's close to you!

I'm not sure what you have right now, so I'm just gonna assume nothing.

Here's a few suggestions:

Get an AEG, not a sniper. They're just better. If, later, you want a sniper and you're willing to throw in some upgrades, get one then.

Don't get a pistol. You just don't need it with a decent AEG.

Let's say a $300 budget for the gun. That'll give you plenty of budget left over for a decent chest rig, eye proteciton, a battery and charger, whatever.

If you want an AK, CYMA CM040D or any of the other VFC clones (CM040s, CM045s, CM048s). I use it. It's nice. Would recommend. Nice metal build, tank-like internals. Nothing really special. Just a good and fairly cheap AK. My brother runs a battery similar to this in his. It's overpriced and not very strong, but it works. If you can find something on Hobbyking it'll be much cheaper and probably better, but they're sold out of a lot right now.
For a lipo charger, the IMAX B6AC is really nice. Does everything you need it to. The mags I like for it aren't available on TorontoAirsoft, but they are available on AirsoftDepot

If you want an M4, Classic Army EC1 or any of the other Skirmish Line (EC1/2, Delta 10/12, KM10/12, ISSC MK22). Light-weight but pretty strong polymer externals, nice internals, has some nice features like a mosfet and quick change spring. The US version comes with a 9.6v battery and ^shitty charger, but I'm not sure about the Canadian version. It doesn't mention it anywhere I can see.

For a chest rig or plate carrier, look into Condor gear. It's pretty solid for the price. Good for beginners.

For head protection, I'm going to take this over to Amazon.

Eye Protection: Pyramex I-force or V2G-XP. Both pass ANSI Z87.1 High Impact and MIL-PRF 32432 impact standards, so they're tough. They have thermal lenses so they resist fog, and they're comfy as hell. Cheap too. They're rebranded by Valken as Zulus and Sierras and can be found on Torontoairsoft for about $30 each.

Lower face protection: One Tigris mask. Protects the important bits, looks stylish doing it, and is super comfy. I use this with the I-force and love it.

For your head, just wear a hat or beanie.

Optional: Ear protection: Howard Leight Impact Sports. Protects your ears from loud sounds and bbs. I like them. I use them all the time.

Optional but highly suggested: Gloves: Mechanix M-pacts. Just the best for the price. Again, they're what I use.

Edit: Forgot a couple things:

M4 Mid caps: G&P High RPS mid caps. Solid mid caps, decent price, feed well in most guns. Hero Outdoors is the only place I can find them in Canada.

Speedloaders: cheap one. It works well. more expensive fancy thing. It works really well.

Super expensive and honestly, it looks god awful. I personally run a OneTigris PJ Fast Helmet (cost me 50€), OneTigris foldable mesh mask (cost me 15€) and goggles are MFH Thunder Deluxe (cost me 30€,can't find 'em on amazon.ca), I just removed the fake plastic vents on the goggles and it's not fogging up for me.
