I like and agree with u/ragingalcoholic73 's comment about fashion and keeping warm. You can look fashionable or be warm, pick one. Everyone here has been making great suggestions for what to wear to keep warm, so I won't beat a dead horse on that topic. What I haven't seen come up yet is foot traction. I walk to work every day in the winter (2km's each way) and one thing that has saved my hide a number of times is slip-on winter boot cleats. The link I posted is the exact model that I have, purchased from Costco, but anything along those lines should do the trick. These things live in my bag (that I carry every day with me) all winter and I can pop them on in no time at all. One thing people take for granted is the full-length stride when you're walking. In the winter time you HAVE to shorten your stride, or you'll end up slipping and falling on your ass. I've bruised my tailbone a number of times in falls and it's NOT fun. If it's slippery out, walk like a penguin. That is, take short little strides. If your foot slips out from underneath you, you're far less likely to fall if your feet are closer together. The downside is that walking any distance takes far longer, and the boot cleats will make your walk quicker, which keeps you warmer, and gets you where you're going faster so you're out of the cold sooner. Strongly recommend you (and anyone else reading) to get a product like I've linked above. When you get where you're going (work, the mall, etc) you can slip the cleats off so you don't sound like you're wearing tap-dancing shoes when you get inside.

Also, if you're a male and you're able to I strongly suggest you consider growing a beard for the winter. If it's thick enough, it can block SOME mild wind and prevent windburn and chapped lips. A beard is never a substitute for a scarf, but it's always nearby when you need it. Plus beards are awesome.
