This is one of those laptops dressed up with eye-catching specs like a "Core i7" and 16GB RAM, but have major flaws:

  • 1366x768 low-quality-TN display. Poor contrast and viewing angles, limited screen realestate, very noticeable. Even 1920x1080 low-quality-TN displays hardly make sense for laptops costing this much I would say. You can easily get better displays (1920x1080 IPS) as well as improve upon other things that could help you as well.
  • The "i7" is a U-series. Confusing branding on Intel's part. Not substantially faster than "i5" U-series; HQ-series CPUs are the real improvement.
  • No dedicated GPU. Doesn't matter if not gaming, but that's the component to focus on if gaming.
  • 1TB HDD (5400RPM) high capacity but relatively slow for bootup and load times. I would say 256GB SSD (+ empty slot to add HDD as secondary storage) is better.
  • In general, RAM is usually easily upgradable. Better for a computer to prioritize important things and just have the potential for memory upgrades in the future.

If you're going to game, these are what I'd recommend for around this price:

  • Acer Aspire 5
  • Refurb Inspiron IPS display + 1050 Ti + SSD model

If not, you can get something like a Lenovo Yoga 710 for 2-in-1, higher color gamut IPS display, touchscreen, and SSD.

    Or a business-class refurb Dell Latitude 5480/5580

  • Use coupon e10sitewide if you buy today or tomorrow to take 10% off. Expires afterwards, not sure what deals will come after.
  • Search parameters exclude versions with the 1366x768 TN displays (1920x1080 displays in these are 45% NTSC IPS), exclude models with 4GB RAM (though you can undo that constraint if you upgrade the RAM yourself), and exclude models with HDDs rather than SSDs.

EDIT: If you took a liking to the looks of the model you're looking at, and you're still not gaming, there's a version here with a 256GB SSD and a 1920x1080 IPS display.

EDIT: Oh you found this for $500. This I would say is better for $500, at least. 1920x1080 IPS touchscreeen, rest of specs fine for normal computer use. If you want to game, though, that $600 Acer from Microcenter I think would be worth going for at least.

    Another non-gaming option:

  • Thinkpad E570 with discount
  • Leave the CPU option at i3 if you're using the computer for just 'normal' use.
  • Pick the 1920x1080 IPS display
  • Pick 8GB RAM (or plan to upgrade it yourself)
  • Pick the SSD since it's such a good price for that upgrade (after the discount applies to it).
  • Final price $555 before taxes.

Maybe look into something like the Acer E15 for $350 if you want good value. Although it doesn't have an i5, it has an i3 and mixes a decent display with okay specs and an okay build quality. It has a new kaby lake i3 processor, 4gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. It has a 1080p display, a backlit keyboard, and a very long battery life.

If you really want an i5, maybe look into the Dell Inspiron 15 for $420. It's slightly over budget, but it's probably the best option because it also has a decent display. It has a skylake i5 processor, 8gb of ram and a 1TB HDD, mixed with a 1080p display and an ok battery life.

They'll both work fine for light games like CS:Go, but not much more demanding since they only have integrated graphics. To get more gaming potential you'll need to up your budget to ~$500.
