well, 2 things. First, I think you can just install a Linux distro like Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc on your current Macbook and it'll work just fine, afaik. Linux Mint has a walkthrough, though its for LM17, but I'm not sure the process is any different for 18 or 18.1. But even LM17.3 will be updated for another few years with security updates and such.

As far as laptops, there's a bunch out there and at $500, you should be able to get something very decent without a problem. I would suggest going over to /r/SuggestALaptop and reading their sticky and filling out the form and posting there. They'll give you no shortage of options. Battery life is another important thing to note.

Just to give an example of something with DVD drive that is new and has decent specs for the money: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-Touchscreen-Signature-Win10-MaxxAudio/dp/B01N0K3246/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1482213929&sr=1-1&keywords=laptop+15.6+8gb+RAM+hdd+1080p

If you want to budget a bit, I may suggest the Acer E15 for $350. It should work well for light / moderate needs with pretty decent specs, and it come with a long battery life. It has a kaby lake i3 processor, 4gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. It also has a 1080p TN display, a 12 hr advertised battery life, and weighs in at 5.3 lbs. If you think she may want a touchscreen and a bit more power, I would suggest the Dell Inspiron 15 for $467 - which has similar specs but with a skylake i5, 8gb of ram and a 1TB HDD.

My best suggestion though is a bit above your price range and is the ASUS F556UA for $530. It doesn't have as much storage, but it will have a much faster SSD which I think she would like a lot. It also comes with a new kaby lake i5 processor and 8gb of ram. It has a 1080p TN display (a pretty good one), a solid build quality, and a pretty good battery life.

I just want one that I can use on my travels, since I hardly play any games anymore, and would most likely prefer to do it back home on my computer anyway.

I was only looking at those with 8gb RAM, is that unnecessary? I feel like 4gb is too little these days.

Here are two that I am interested in:

  • HP
  • Dell

They are pretty evenly matched except for the core i3/i5, which gives almost 100USD difference in price!

What do you think about this laptop

Poor display (1600x900 resolution isn't very good for 17.3", much better to find 1920x1080 in 15.6"), 12GB RAM doesn't really make it good & you can DIY-upgrade most laptops with 8GB RAM to 12GB if you need to with only a $30 part as long as they have two memory slots, and while the CPU is fine for basic use don't let it being a quad-core draw you in, since it's actually less-good than Intel dual-cores.

I would consider a Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV for about this price. Much better display, 15.6" 1920x1080 IPS touch -- doesn't specify IPS in the specs but I confirmed @MicrosoftStore that it has good contrast and viewing angles (the display in the laptop you're looking at will not). Has to be the 4682SLV or one of the 1920x1080 models for it to be IPS, don't go for the 1366x768 models. Check that to make sure, before buying. I know these two are the 4682SLV with 1920x1080 IPS touch.

I would recommend this Dell Inspiron mainly because it comes with Intel RealSense 3D camera which is a better option than most laptops in the same price range and it come with the specs you would need for general usage, it comes with Intel Core i5-6200U which is more than enough for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Backlit keyboard which is a nice bonus, 15.6 in Full HD touchscreen, and it is way under your budget.

Personally, id just get a cheap windows laptop and put linux on that. I dont think most, if any, chromebooks can be upgraded. Aside from the SSD, i think most of the stuff is non-swappable, even the battery in most cases. Chromebooks are more made for portability and utility, rather that hardcore performance. Personally i think you would be better off with something like this its cheaper than you could upgrade a cheap laptop (even a Chromebook) for, and it has decent power for most things. The graphics card would be the only problem, but its hard to find a cheap laptop without integrated graphics.

sorry for the long reply, i really hope it helps!

Looking real quick, the 12-inch MacBook (cheapest one) is $1300.

I see this on Amazon for $475. Almost 1/3 the price.
