Hectograph paper The difference between good hecograph paper and shitty is dramatic - like a lot of things in this medium. The kind linked above is an easy win.

Obviously handpoke is messier than machinated tattooing - partly because there is more 'stop and start'. So my trick is to, when wiping, be extremely dainty with your paper towel - rather than just wiping the entire piece, just wipe away ink with the very tip of your paper towel.

I'll also add that you should only go for a full-wipe with greensoap after each completed portion of the tattoo unless it's getting so messy that it impedes progress.

P.S those starter kits are... kind of a ripoff. A good starting place is to just buy things from Amazon, then upgrade with pro-quality stuff as you go and once you decide that tattooing is for you. I'm happy to provide a comprehensive shopping list if you like. You can build a sanitary setup for like, $115, that will last many, many tattoos before you need to re-up on supplies.

EDIT: oh yeah, vaseline - keep a big glob on your workstation, then when you're gloved up and ready to tattoo, put a small glob on the back of your non-dominant hand. Between each wipe, apply vaseline to the site - just a small amount is fine
